First I want to wish everyone a very Happy
Thanksgiving. It’s a wonderful Holiday to be shared with
family and friends. Please remember to check on your elderly neighbors and shut-in’s during this season of giving.
The Halloween Party on Saturday the 24th was a great
success. Many thanks to the ladies who made it happen.

check each newsletter and calendar. Our annual Christmas Party is being planned for Sunday December 13, 2015.
Details will be in the December Newsletter.
I want to remind all of our members to let us know if
you have a change in address, phone or e-mail. Communicating with you is important. Also, please let us know if a
member is ill or hospitalized. Our Sunshine ladies like to
send cards and make calls.
The Richmond animal control officer, Ann Fisher, needs
old, used or new towels. Animal health is very important.

DO NOT OPEN THE ATTACHMENT
Easy Crockpot Turkey Breast.
1 turkey breast (bone in) about 6 pounds or (larger if you have a big crock pot)
1 packet of dry onion soup mix and 3T. butter
Directions:
No water needed- turkey makes its own juice while cooking.
1-Coat inside of crockpot with non-stick spray.
2- Coat turkey breast all over with dry onion soup mix. Put turkey breast thick side up in crockpot.
3-Cut butter into 3 sections and place on top of turkey.
4- Cook on low in crockpot 6 or 7 hours, or until meat registers 175 degrees.
5- Choose your own side vegetables for your turkey dinner.
Impossible Coconut Custard Pie
1/2 C Bisquick
3/4c. sugar
4 eggs
2 C milk
1 (3 1/2 oz.) flaked coconut
1 tsp vanilla
1T. butter, softened.
Combine all ingredients and pour into a buttered pie pan Bake @400 for 25-30 min until custard sets.
Like magic it layers into a crust, custard and coconut on top. cool before serving
It was the kindergarten teacher’s birthday and the students decided that they would each buy their teacher a
gift.
The first student, whose parents own a florist shop,
gave her a present.
She held it and said, "I guess that it is flowers".
"How did you guess?" asked the little boy. She laughed
and thanked him.
The second student, whose parents own a candy store,
gave her a present.
She held it and said, "I guess that is some candy."
"How did you guess?" asked the little boy. She again
laughed and thanked him also.
The third student, whose parents own a bottle shop,
gave her a box which was leaking. The teacher touched
the liquid with her finger and tasted it. "Mmm... is it
wine?" she asked.
"No," said the little girl.
So she tasted it again. "Is it champagne?" she asked.
"Noooo," replied the little girl, "It's a puppy."
Vinny and Sal are out in the woods hunting
when suddenly Sal grabs his chest and falls
to the ground. He doesn’t seem to be
breathing; his eyes are rolled back in his
head.
Vinny whips out his cell phone and calls
911. He tells the operator, "I think my friend
Sal is dead! What should I do?
The operator, in a calm soothing voice
says, "Just take it easy and follow my instructions. First, let's make sure he's dead."
There is a silence. And then a gunshot is
heard.
Vinny's voice comes back on the line, "
Okay... Now what? "
You know that tingly little feeling you get
when you really like someone you've just
met? That's common sense leaving your
body.
Break No Bones by Kathy Reichs (2006) published by Scribner Books
In this 9th novel featuring forensic anthropologist Dr. Temperance “Tempe” Brennan, the operative word is “bones”. In fact, that
is the operative word in the entire series of eighteen novels featuring Dr. Brennan. And, if there is one area in which author Dr.
Kathy Reichs is an expert, it is bones. She is a board certified forensic anthropologist (only one of 50 in the world) who practices
both in North Carolina and Montreal, Canada. She consults on cases worldwide and is a recognized expert witness in matters
of forensic anthropology. In short, Reichs knows her stuff!
But, if you have ever watched an episode of the TV program Bones, be warned that the Temperance Brennan in Reich’s novels
in no way resembles the one-dimensional and ludicrous character portrayed by Emily Deschanel in that series. And, there is no
parallel in the novels for Seeley Booth, the television Tempe’s love interest portrayed by actor David Boreanz, whom I find to be
both buffoonish and just plain creepy.
Although it is more satisfying to read Reichs’ novels in order of their publication, it isn’t necessary. She deftly provides enough
background in each novel to bring a new reader up to speed on Tempe Brennan’s complex character and her fascinating practice of forensic anthropology. Even Tempe’s rather complicated love life figures into most plots. She is still legally married to
her first husband, attorney Janis “Pete “ Peterson , but they have been estranged for many years due to Pete’s philandering.
Somehow, though, Pete keeps weaving his way back into her life and her work. His character is so well developed and attractive, it becomes easy to see why Tempe just can’t seem to let him go for good. Her newest love interest is Andrew Ryan, a
charming Montreal police detective who seems to carry more than his share of personal baggage.
The plot of Break No Bones is fast paced and exciting. Tempe has been summoned to assist an ailing medical examiner in
Charlestown, South Carolina, just as she and some local graduate students are winding up a summer anthropological dig. During the dig for ancient human remains, the students uncover the body of a much more recent burial, an apparent murder victim.
A few more bodies pile up and, as they say, “the plot thickens”. The cast of characters grows to include an annoying and unethical news journalist, a skeptical police chief, an impatient land developer and a shady televangelist with a missing daughter.
Regardless of the plot, which is good, and skillful character development, the real star of this and all the Tempe Brennan novels
is the science of forensic anthropology. Some passages read like a textbook. Reichs has been criticized for devoting too much
print to the sometimes grisly details, but her expertise in the field and the richness of her personal experiences lend an authenticity to her novels that is unique in the American thriller genre. She never includes gory descriptions gratuitously or for shock
value; they are an integral part of the plot development. And, in spite of her personal problems and challenges, Tempe’s dedication to uncovering the truth and seeking justice for the dead is unwavering and genuine.
My only criticism of Reichs’ writing style is her sometimes silly and incongruous metaphors. In that respect, the novels could do
with some stronger editing.
VERDICT: All things considered, Break No Bones, like all the entries in the Tempe Brennan series, is a good read.
PS. I found this book in hardcover for $2.00 at the Remnant Shop at 1081 Main Street in Hope Valley. The second floor
features furniture, collectibles and a large collection of second-hand books at reasonable prices. The area is well organized by
genre and easy to browse. Check it out next time you are in Hope Valley.

I received a note from Joan St. Clair Thanking all of
our members for their thoughts and prayers during
her recent illness. She’s making a full recovery
I was driving with my three young
