It all started in 1957 when the Germains became the owners of a convenience store with a lunch counter. Soon after, Victor and Huguette acquired another establishment, this time a restaurant located in a small shopping centre. And a few years later they opened yet another restaurant, Le Fiacre, which became renowned in Québec City. Victor acquired a residential building in the mid-1970s and it was then that he created his property management business, called “Casot.” Victor Germain set the tone for the business with his financially successful operations, including Le Fiacre restaurant and many residential and commercial buildings. Guided by the same commitment to excellence, Christiane and Jean-Yves, Victor and Huguette Germain’s two eldest children, developed original restaurant concepts like Cousin Germain and the Café Saint‑Honoré. W W W. G R O U P EG ER M AI N . C O M 3 th e h is to r y of g r ou p g er m a in h ot el s While in their early twenties, Christiane and Jean-Yves Germain already showed great leadership in the management of establishments that were making an impression on the Québec City scene. In the 1980s, while on a trip to New York City, Christiane and Jean-Yves fell in love with Morgans Hotel. The legendary institution with its innovative boutiquehotel concept captivated their interest. Then and there they decided to open their first hotel property. In 1988, Christiane and Jean-Yves inaugurated their very first hotel, which they named Hôtel Germain-des-Prés. It was the very first boutique-hotel in 4 g BU S IN E S S B Y G R O U P G E R MA I N H O T E L S Canada. It included Le Bistango restaurant, successor to the famous Le Fiacre restaurant. At the time, with its bold and avant-garde concept, Hôtel Germain-des-Prés quickly became a resounding success! Its comfort, quality and service garnered praise and the enthusiasm of a dynamic business clientele in touch with the latest trends. The success continued. Other hotels followed in Québec City, Montréal, Toronto and Calgary. In 2007, Group Germain Hotels began a brand new adventure by launching Alt Hotels, a pared-down, reasonably priced luxury concept featuring modern designs. Today the Germain family owns many hotels across Canada and is increasingly recognized for its business acumen, innovation and concern for offering the highest quality products and services. Every year, guests spend 325,000 overnight stays in Group Germain Hotels properties, bringing the total number of stays to nearly 4 million since the opening of the first hotel in 1988. The company is even ranked as one of Canada’s 50 Best Managed Companies and now employs close to 800 people. And the family has grown: Huguette and Victor Germain’s grandchildren, Hugo and Marie Pier and Clarah, are now working for the company! Since its start over 50 years ago, Group Germain Hotels has witnessed remarkable growth, which will continue in leaps and bounds as it pursues its national expansion. ou r te a m OUR TEAM CHRISTIANE GERMAIN CO-PRESIDENT Co-president of Group Germain Hotels, Christiane is the soul behind the experiential concept at Germain establishments. C O M 19 le g er m a in hote ls LE GERMAIN HOTELS Le Germain Hotels were founded on elegance and authenticity. Whether in Calgary, Toronto, Montréal, Québec City or Charlevoix, staff at Le Germain properties have a single goal: to make every person feel like a treasured guest in an environment where comfort and design go hand in hand, and where personalized yet discreet service is of the utmost importance. 22 g B U S IN E S S B Y G R O U P G E R MA I N H O T E LS l e g er m a in hote ls LE GERMAIN HOTELS PIONEERED THE BOUTIQUE-HOTEL CONCEPT IN CANADA BOUTIQUE-HOTELS ARE DESIGNED TO SATISFY CUSTOMERS PASSIONATE ABOUT DESIGN, QUALITY AND COMFORT. Contrary to what the name implies, a boutique-hotel is not a hotel where one can find boutiques. We often speak of the feeling when we want to describe boutique-hotels, but the concept is defined mainly by: Personalized service – a key difference – every need is anticipated and clients are treated as guests. The average size of the establishment – generally less than 150 rooms. Architecture and design – unique architecture, luxurious, stylish and simple design with an attention to detail and decor that offers an intimate atmosphere. An urban location – hotels located in major cities and in vibrant and trendy neighbourhoods. “We provide personalized services and quality. Authenticity is reflected in what we are and what we offer.” — Christiane Germain 24 g B U S IN E S S B Y G R O U P G E R MA I N H O T E LS BOUTIQUE-HOTEL CONCEPT Emerging during the 1980s in New York City, the boutique-hotel niche market experienced a boom in the 1990s. This type of hotel fills the gap in the market left by the standardization typical of large hotel chains. In contrast to these, each boutique establishment develops a unique style based on a concept and a personality of its own. Each Le Germain Hotel bears a distinctive signature, that is to say, each has a different lobby in terms of the look and the architecture. It’s the same for the rooms and public areas in the hotels.
