Capturing the
heart of a nation
Legacy of Glasgow 2014 will make the city a better place for years to come
I
t was a visit to the Manchester
Commonwealth Games in
2002 by senior figures from
the city that first sparked the
thought that maybe, just maybe,
Glasgow could do this too.
At the time, it was seen as
wildly ambitious and a bit risky
to take on this huge task – the
second-largest multi-sport event
in the world and the biggest event
Scotland could ever hope to host.
But from the kernel of an idea,
support grew, along with the
sense of ambition that Glasgow
can take on the world when
it puts its mind to it. The city
grabbed this idea as a way to
look to the future and bring
sport, culture, and the health and
wellbeing of its citizens into the
heart of regeneration plans for
the next 20 years.
As the city’s political leadership,
the Scottish Executive and
Commonwealth Games Scotland
embraced the idea, a team
was assembled to prepare a
formal bid to present to the
international Commonwealth
Games Federation (CGF).
Through this detailed technical
process, city leaders realised the
practicalities of delivering the
infrastructure for the Games were
not insurmountable. Since the
mid-1990s, Glasgow had invested
hundreds of millions of pounds
in sports venues for local people
and there were already plans for
a new National Indoor Arena.
Just bring that forward, add a
More than 8,000 people

Velodrome since it opened
in October 2012
Velodrome, upgrade Tollcross
Swimming pool and the Lawn
Bowls at Kelvingrove and build a
new National Hockey Centre and
everything would be in place.
As the technical work continued,
it was the passion with which the
bid was embraced by the public,
business and charities across
Scotland which really captured
the imagination. The campaign
showed voting delegates across
the world, who would decide
the fate of the bids, that Glasgow
could not only deliver on the
practicalities, but that its passion
for sport, and a party, would make
the 2014 Games special.
Alongside Glasgow, Halifax in
Canada and Abuja in Nigeria were
in the running. Halifax dropped out
LEGACY
before the final vote, leaving it a
two-horse race up to decision day in
Sri Lanka. With tension mounting,
the CGF’s General Assembly voted
on 9 November 2007. After both
cities made their presentation,
Glasgow emerged victorious with
47 votes to Abuja’s 24.
The city immediately set about
making plans to fulfil its number
one priority – that Glasgow would
work hard to produce a lasting
legacy for its citizens from the
hosting of the Games. This event
would not just be an 11-day
spectacular, but would benefit
the economic prospects, health
and wellbeing of the city for
many years to come. Seven years
later, this work has delivered a
host of lasting benefits for the city.
The council’s ambitious
Commonwealth Apprenticeship
Initiative has created Modern
Apprenticeship places for around
2,500 Glasgow school leavers. It
forms a key element of the
£50 million Glasgow Guarantee,
which aims to give every Glaswegian
aged between 16 and 24 access to
a job, training or an apprenticeship.
Contracts totalling £200 million
have been won by Glasgow
businesses and the Athlete’s
Village in Dalmarnock has led

Games branding. Share your images: #TheBigG
the transformation of the East
End, providing 700 sustainable
homes for a new generation of
Glaswegians.
Every venue built by the
council for the Games is now in
use by the public, a world first
for Glasgow. More than 8,000
people have used the Sir Chris
Hoy Velodrome since it opened
in October 2012; attendances at
adult active health programmes
have grown by 40 per cent in the
past three years; and the numbers
of junior clubs, volunteers and
members have also increased
significantly over that period.
The council has committed to
continuing to deliver on its legacy
to make Glasgow a better place to
live, work and play for many years.
YOU’RE HIRED…
GUARANTEED
G
lasgow’s Games journey was never
intended to be just about the sport.
It was always about what it would mean
for the people of the city. And for more
than 4,500 of them, it’s meant work, training
or apprenticeships.
Planning for the Games by Glasgow City Council
has included delivering a range of projects designed
to leave a lasting legacy for the city.
One of those legacy projects – the £50 million
Glasgow Guarantee – was designed to provide a job,
training or apprenticeship place for everyone in the
city between the ages of 16 and 24. It also assists
Glaswegians over this age in refreshing their skills so
they can access new job opportunities.
The Glasgow Guarantee comprises the
Commonwealth Apprenticeship Initiative, the
Commonwealth Graduate Fund, the Commonwealth
Jobs Fund and the Commonwealth Youth Fund and
the Glasgow Veteran’s Employment Programme.
Legacy projects are also helping to make the
city greener, more accessible and more active, with
a huge increase in sports participation figures over
the last couple of years.
Councillor Gordon Matheson, Leader of Glasgow
City Council, said: “We want to give Glaswegians the
skills and opportunities to find work and fulfil their
aspirations for a brighter future. The more skilled
people we have in the city, and the more we link
these skills to the needs of business,
the easier it is to attract future
investment and jobs. This is a
win-win situation for Glasgow
and everyone that lives here.
“We are ensuring that the
Commonwealth Games will
continue to help our citizens
flourish and the city’s economy
grow for years to come.”

QUEEN’S BATON RELAY
Queen’s Baton celebrations will fire up city for Opening Ceremony
Start of our
relay big
adventure
T
he Queen’s Baton Relay
will visit every part of
Glasgow as it travels
through the Host City
in the three days immediately
before the Opening Ceremony
of the XX Commonwealth
Games on 23 July. The route will
take in world-famous landmarks
as well as being celebrated in
every community across the city.
Between 20 and 22 July, the
soundscape of our city will be
amplified with live bands and
choirs. Roads and paths will be
animated with dancers and
street performers. Community
spaces will be awash with
banners and bunting.
It is an exciting opportunity
for everyone to be involved,
from cheering along the route
as it snakes across the city, to
attending special events to
support your community heroes
carrying the baton. You are all
invited to demonstrate pride in
your city and show the world
how Glasgow celebrates.
At the end of each day’s relay,
thousands of people will be
able to enjoy Finish Line events
in Springburn Park (20 July),
Victoria Park (21 July) and the
Queen’s Park Recreation Ground
(22 July). Up to 8,000 people will
be invited to join the party at
each of the events. Free tickets
will be issued through a ballot
for the Finish Line events.
On 20 July, the baton will pass
landmarks, including the Gallery
of Modern Art, George Square,
Glasgow Cathedral and Mitchell

Library, as well as communities
across the north and east of the
city. The following day, the baton
will visit the West End, taking
in Kelvingrove Art Gallery and
Museum, the Botanic Gardens
and the Finnieston Crane.
On the final day of the relay,
the baton will travel to the
south side, visiting landmarks
such as the Burrell Collection,
Tramway and Citizens’ Theatre.
Councillor Gordon Matheson,
Leader of Glasgow City Council,
said: “The arrival of the Queen’s
Baton will really signal the start
of the celebrations.
“We know how to put on a
party and from Castlemilk to
Easterhouse, Drumchapel to
Auchenshuggle, and everywhere
in between, people will have a
chance to welcome the baton
and really be a part of the Games.
“I’ve no doubt the batonbearers will receive amazing
support as they run along the
city streets as Glasgow gears up
to host the biggest sporting
and cultural celebration the
country has ever seen. To mark
that, we will host three Finish
Line events in
the north, west
and south of the
city – bringing
the Games to life
right across Glasgow. It
is a chance to showcase
our great city on a global
stage and I’ve no doubt
the people of Glasgow will
be the stars of the show.”
David Grevemberg,
Chief Executive, Glasgow
2014, said: “The Queen’s
Baton Relay is a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity
for people across Scotland
to celebrate what’s
extraordinary and unique
about their communities, and
honour those locals who
make a difference to others.
“The baton will visit hundreds
of villages, towns and cities,
with thousands taking part
in the relay, and many more
attending the vast programme
of events along the route.
“The momentum is building
for the biggest festival of sport
and culture this nation has
ever hosted.”
The Games are a chance to
showcase our great city on a
global stage and I’ve no doubt
the people of Glasgow will be
the stars of the show
QUEEN’S BATON RELAY
AROUND THE WORLD IN 288 DAYS
On 9 October 2013, the Glasgow 2014
Queen’s Baton Relay set off on its journey
around the nations and territories of the
Commonwealth. The International Sector
of the journey lasts 248 days, covers more
than 190,000 kilometres and crosses
continents, terrains and time zones.
On Saturday 14 June 2014, the baton
enters the final straight. With up to 4,000
batonbearers joining the relay in more than
400 communities, this is Scotland’s biggestever relay. The Queen’s Baton is visiting all
32 local authorities, with up to 100 people
carrying Her Majesty’s message daily.
Selected batonbearers have been nominated
in recognition of their contributions to local
sport, community and youth.
The relay offers people across Scotland
the opportunity to join in on great days
out. There are countless sports and cultural
events taking place daily along the route,
including an evening celebration, so that
even bigger crowds can enjoy the festivities.
Delivered in partnership with
Commonwealth Games Scotland, the final
leg of the relay brings the host nation
one step closer to the thrill of the Games,
building anticipation and an enormous
sense of pride.
The relay will reflect the important
role that sport plays in local communities
by visiting schools, sporting
venues and leisure &
recreation centres, with
events and activities
supported by the
sportscotland Active Schools Network. The
288-day relay concludes on 23 July 2014 at
the Opening Ceremony, when the baton is
delivered back to Her Majesty The Queen.
After reading Her message of welcome to
the athletes of the Commonwealth, the
Games will officially begin.
The final leg of the Glasgow 2014 Queen’s
Baton Relay will take place on Sunday 20
July, when the baton returns to Glasgow for
a three-day relay around the host city. Three
evening celebrations will be held as part
of the baton’s time in the city; on Sunday
20 July, the evening celebration will be at
Springburn Park; on Monday 21 July, it will
take place at Victoria Park and on Tuesday
22 July, the evening celebration will be held
at Queen’s Park Recreation Ground.

GLASGOW MAGAZINE QUEEN’S BATON RELAY
HUNTER REID, OBE – Project Co-ordinator for Maryhill Burgh Halls,
who led the team that delivered the £10 million urban regeneration,
tells of his honour at being a batonbearer in the Queen’s Baton Relay.
Are you looking forward to
carrying the baton in July?
I am delighted to have been
chosen and am looking forward
with great excitement and
anticipation to the day that the
baton comes to Maryhill. For the
last 10 years I have worked on
the restoration of Maryhill Burgh
Halls. It has been the most
enjoyable, challenging project
of my career and to carry the
baton here will be very special.
What does it mean to you to
have been nominated?
It’s a great honour. I was thrilled
when I heard and I am delighted
that my daughter Alice and
granddaughters Lois and Naomi,
who live in Malaysia, and
my daughter Lucy and my
granddaughter Heather, who
live in Dublin, will be there to
witness the event on the day.
Do you know who
nominated you and why?
I was nominated by the Board of
Maryhill Burgh Halls Trust (and my
two daughters, I believe) for the
work I have done there with many
other dedicated colleagues and
volunteers. I have led the team
responsible for raising the
£10 million necessary for funding
and carrying out the restoration
of Maryhill Burgh Halls and
adjoining Police Station over the
past 10 years. I received an OBE
for Services to Architecture and
to Community Engagement from
Prince William last year. He told
me how much he was looking
forward to the Commonwealth
Games in Glasgow in 2014. Never
for a minute did I think I would
carry the Queen’s Baton this July.

SAFETY & SECURITY
May the force
be with you
Police Scotland is
all set for a safe and
secure summer
W
hether you are
coming to see a
sporting event
or live and work
in Glasgow, the summer of 2014
is going to be an extremely busy
period as the city bursts with
activity, transforming the
streets, parks and beyond.
Committed to safety and
security, Police Scotland has
been planning the Glasgow 2014
Commonwealth Games policing
operation for quite some time.
We want everyone – residents,
businesses and visitors to the
city – to have the best possible
Games-time experience.
Police Scotland has a wealth
of experience to draw upon
from other big events and,
along with thorough planning,
professional testing and
exercises, we are confident
that this sporting spectacle
and celebration will be policed
appropriately to complement
the ‘friendly games’.
Considerable planning has
gone into providing a sufficient
workforce to police the Games,
as well as ensuring communities
continue to receive the level of
service they have come to
expect from Police Scotland.

Here are some handy tips to
help ensure you have a great
day out at the Games.
Remember, Glasgow

with more than one million
additional visitors expected
in the city this summer.
l Plan your journey now.
Make sure you know how
to reach the venue and allow
plenty of time for queuing
systems at transport hubs
and security checks.
l Walk, cycle or take public
transport – do not drive
to the venue. With the
exception of limited prebookable facilities for Blue
Badge holders, there will
be no parking or set-down/
pick-up points for private
cars near venues. On the day
of your event, your ticket for
the sport entitles you to use
local public transport. There
are also a limited number of

spaces for some venues.

communities and groups that
may have previously encountered
barriers to becoming involved
in volunteering. The volunteers,
who will all live, work or study in
the city, will receive training and

Councillor Archie Graham,
Depute Leader of Glasgow City
Council and the Chair of Glasgow
Life, said: “These volunteers will

represent the real heart and soul
of the city, offering a welcome
that’s bursting with warmth,
passion and pride.
“I’ve absolutely no doubt that
the people of Glasgow will be
the magic ingredient that makes
for the best ever Commonwealth

through the Host City Volunteer
programme, we can support
individuals and communities
to be part of that.
“We’re absolutely committed
to ensuring that those who have
faced barriers to volunteering,
such as disabled people or those
with caring responsibilities, will
now be able to be part of the
biggest celebration Scotland
has ever seen.
“I’m also delighted that the

achieve a real, lasting legacy
for everyone who takes part.”
Maureen McGinn, Big Lottery

“The Host City Volunteering
programme offers a once-in-alifetime opportunity to be part
of the Glasgow’s Commonwealth
Games experience.
“Our funding of more than
£1.7 million means people who
live, work or study in Glasgow
can access the necessary support
to enable them to volunteer.
Volunteering is massively
rewarding and those who sign up

the city. She is a mother of
two and has just become
a grandmother.
Fiona says the Host City
Volunteer programme suited
her preference to meet people
and tell them all about
the city she loves – and
she can’t wait to meet
new visitors from
across the world.
Fiona thinks it
will be a fantastic
opportunity for
the people of
Glasgow to show
how welcoming Glaswegians
are and, by offering her local
expertise, she will ensure all of
the visitors to the city make
the most of their time here.
Fiona admits she is not
overly athletic but the Host
City Volunteer co-ordinators
were very friendly and
encouraging and assured her
this would not be a barrier
when volunteering.
Fiona says training to be
a Host City Volunteer has
given her the spark she
needed to encourage her
to help out more around
the city and she hopes to
continue volunteering
after the Glasgow
2014 Commonwealth
Games have been
and gone.
But first she will
be concentrating
on being the face
of Glasgow when
we welcome the
world during July and August.
Fiona is really passionate
about Glasgow and would
be more than happy to speak
to anyone who wants to find
out more about volunteering
to be a host during the
Commonwealth Games.

ROAD EVENTS
Gear up to line the streets of Glasgow and beyond for the Commonwealth Games road events
Fast, furious and free
T
hree Commonwealth Games road
events will see elite athletes race
through the heart of the city
and beyond.
The excitement will spread to towns and
villages around Glasgow as riders battle
against the clock in the Cycling Time Trial
event on Thursday 31 July, while Glasgow
itself becomes the race track on Sunday 3
August, with the fastest riders racing through
the city’s streets for the action-packed
Cycling Road Race.
In the Time Trial, top Commonwealth
cyclists will take on a challenging route (40km
for men, 30km for women) that starts and
finishes at Glasgow Green, taking in the areas
of East Dunbartonshire and North Lanarkshire
as well as the city’s East End.
The Road Race, also starting in Glasgow
Green, features a 14km circuit taking riders
along Argyle Street, Buchanan Street and
St Vincent Street, before carrying on to the
city’s West End, where they will pass through
Kelvingrove Park and circuit the West End
before heading back towards the city centre.
For the men’s race, competitors will complete

168km and lap the course 12 times. Female
riders will complete seven laps and 98km. The
route for this event was trialled last summer
when Glasgow hosted the British Cycling
National Road Race Championships.
On Sunday 27 July, athletes in the 42.195km
(26.2miles) Marathon route will also cross the
River Clyde four times as they push themselves
towards the finish line, Gold and glory.
Spectators won’t need a ticket for the
Cycling or Marathon routes as all three
events are free, giving everyone a chance to
experience the thrill of live sport. Make sure
you plan your journey before setting off as
travel conditions will be different from normal
across the city on these days, and in the days
immediately before as the courses are built.

during the Games.
JOHN, 50 FROM ANNIESLAND
John works in Glasgow city
centre. His normal hours are
9-to-5 and he takes the train from
Anniesland to Glasgow Central.
John had a look on the Get
Ready Glasgow website and he
REMODE: Use
the opportunity

noticed that, throughout the
Games, the train line he uses to
get to work will be carrying up to
35,000 extra people per day back
and forth to the SECC.
John considered his options,
he could:
l re-time - leave for work a bit
later than normal
l reduce – work from one of his
organisation’s offices closer to his
home on the busiest days
l re-route – take the Glasgow
Queen Street train instead
l remode – cycle to work for
the 11 days of the Games.
John worked out that if he
cycled to work he could make it

ELIZABETH, 35 FROM NEWLANDS
Elizabeth meets her friends in
Glasgow every Sunday for coffee.
They’re planning to meet on
27 July on Buchanan Street.
She usually drives into the city
centre and parks but she had a
look at the Get Ready Glasgow
website and she realised that the
Marathon is on that day and that
there will be some road closures in
the city centre and southside.
Elizabeth considered her
options, she could:
l remode – take the train into
town instead of taking the car
l re-time – move the coffee to
the evening and make it a meal
l re-route – take the car and
do some shopping in the West
End and then jump on a bus into
the city centre for the coffee
l reduce – move the coffee
to the Friday afternoon and on
the Sunday go for a walk along
to Pollok park to cheer on the
Marathon runners.
Elizabeth and her friends
wanted to soak up the fantastic
atmosphere and get involved in
the Games so they moved their
coffee to the Friday and decided
to get behind the Games and
go along to the Marathon on
the Sunday.
DAVID, 28 FROM CALTON
David works in a bar in the West
End of Glasgow. His shifts change
weekly. He tends to take the
number 263 bus from the end of
his street and then jump on the
Subway along to work.
Having had a look on the Get
Ready Glasgow website, David
noticed that the 263 will be
diverted during the Games, which
will make his journey slightly
longer. He considered his options
and could:
l remode – cycle into the
West End, which would take
about 25mins
l re-route – walk into town and
then jump on the Subway to work,
which would take about 29 mins
l reduce – speak with his boss
about it and see if he can do more
hours over fewer days
l re-time – leave for work a
bit earlier than usual and take the
same route.
David was really happy with
the shifts he had been allocated
during Games time as it gave him
the chance to go to some of the
Festival 2014 events taking place
across the city. He decided that
the best thing to do would be to
use his usual mode of travel but
to leave for work a bit earlier than
usual to make sure he arrived in
plenty of time.
The atmosphere will be great
and it’s a chance to see some
of the world’s best athletes.
You can see a number
of events:
l Thu 24 and Sat 26 July Triathlon
l Sun 27 July – Marathon
l Thu 31 July – Cycling

l Sun 3 Aug – Cycling

these events are already online
so check out where they are
and work out where the best
place for you to view the race is.

If you are planning on
coming along please keep
these top tips in mind:
l There will be large
numbers of people coming to
view these events so make sure
you leave plenty of time for
your journey and remember
viewing capacity at popular
places will be limited
l Check journey times
before and arrive early
l Be prepared to wait for
several hours and think carefully
about bringing small children.
Pack water and sunscreen as
well as waterproof clothing –
be prepared for the weather
l On road event days the
road race routes will be closed
from early in the morning until
late afternoon and there is no
parking near the route. This
could affect traffic so plan to
leave the car at home and use
alternatives instead
l There will be pedestrian
crossing points around the
route, use the online maps to
find out where they are.
