hen digital radio (DAB) started a few years ago I got one straight
away because I needed a decent radio and my favourite station
wasn’t broadcast on FM. In the end I got a DAB receiver which was
also an internet radio - great sound quality and on special, as no one
seemed to want an IP radio. Well technically it worked but my network
was connected by 3G so was too slow to keep up, although the DAB part
worked fine. Recently ADSL has become available where I am, so it’s now
‘all systems go’ with the IP radio side of things and there are literally
thousands of stations. Now I can listen to broadcasts from all over the
world. I’m not sure how many people do this or have IP radios, but you
may well have one without knowing: most newish smartphones, tablets
and PCs will stream IP radio, in many cases without an App, just using
a web browser. “What’s this got to do with motorcycles!” I hear you
ask. Well for no particular reason I did a search for ‘Harley’ on a radio
search site and just one came up. It’s nothing official and not related to
Harley-Davidson but the site and music are aimed at motorcycle riders.
It’s called Harley Radio and is quite good. Being American it can go a bit
mid-west or soft-rock now and then, but is worth tuning in to if you’ll
excuse the anachronism. [Note: data usage is at least a meg a minute so
use free WiFi – 3G/4G may burn through your quota] Good as it is I tend
to end up listening mainly to Radio Caroline, and my absolute favourite is
Planet Rock: that’s got Alice Cooper as a DJ and also I love hearing about
the 10 mile tailbacks on the M25 North Circular Road, because it ain’t
going to affect me.
The other sovereign purchase I recently made was a Bluetooth speaker,
but I’m not recommending any particular one. I chose the one I did
because it’s cylindrical and exactly fits into two BrisHOG stubby holders.
All you need is that and a smartphone and you have a very compact but
fairly loud portable stereo you can stuff into your saddlebags – and you
would be taking a stubby holder anyway. I’ve now got my entire record
collection on my phone now so its ‘party time’ on road trips.
Cheers, Chris

April 2014
Director’s Report
f there is one thing that I can say about being a part of
Brisbane HOG it’s that things never get boring, and as we
move into April there will be a few firsts. We will have a
new dealership premises, something that I know many of us
have been looking forward to for a while, and it will be the
first time that any of us have been a part of such a massive
renovation. If the sneak peeks are anything to go by then the
new premises will be great. Hopefully, all things going well, it
should be done and dusted by the time this magazine is out.
We will be holding our monthly meeting at a new home:
Brothers Grange Community Sports Club, 41 Agincourt
Street, Grange. With Morningside RSL going into receivership
we were faced with the dilemma of
where to have our meetings. It is
times like this that you realise just
what a great bunch of people we
have in our club. Within a short
time of making the announcement
members were contacting the
committee with suggestions of
places they had found.
I can say that every suggestion
was followed through by the
committee, but in the end the
committee decided on the Brothers
Grange Community Sports Club.
Food is great, the atmosphere of
the venue is great and the staff are
certainly very friendly and helpful.
I think it will meet our needs as a
club because many of our members
make a night of the club meetings
and have dinner as well as a few drinks, and as an added
bonus we get access to the meeting room at no cost to us.
Another first.
We also have a new Ladies of Harley Officer after Di’s
resignation just before the last club meeting. I would like to
welcome Lea-Ann back to the committee, she has taken over
the LOH role and I know that she has a lot of great ideas that
I’m sure everyone will enjoy - she is very excited about her
new position. This is certainly something that can only mean
good things for Ladies of Harley. In the end it was an easy
decision with Lea-Ann being the only nomination but that in
no way takes away from her enthusiasm for the role.
To Di, thank you for your efforts since last August and I hope
your expanded role at work still allows you the time to ride
2
your Harley. We look forward to seeing you in the pack again
when your leg heals.
The Cairns rally is only a few weeks away, if you are coming
please take the time to complete the rally register on our
website, this has nothing to do with the organisation of the
rally itself but allows us to know who is coming. If you have a
smartphone make sure you have a copy of the Brisbane HOG
App on the phone. I will get a couple of lessons on how to use
it so we can let everyone know if there is something we plan
on doing as a chapter at the rally.
With the rally in mind I will not be at the next club meeting
and Rob will be looking after things
for me. It’s a bit of a shame I won’t
be there given that it will be our first
meeting at the new venue, but I know
Rob will do a great job.
Speaking of Rob, everybody in the
club should know Amy from Morgan &
Wacker: unfortunately she fell getting
off Rob’s bike at the lunch venue on
the last club ride and broke her wrist.
Our best wishes go out to Amy and
we wish her a speedy recovery. There
are a couple of stories floating round
as to the cause of Amy’s injury, Lola
suggested it was Amy’s eagerness to
get into lunch that caused her to trip
over and fall. My preference follows
the motto of ‘never let the truth get in
the way of a good story.’ A good story
needs a touch of truth just to make
it sound plausible, so when Rob told a number of our other
guests on the ride that day that they needed to be mindful
that causing their rider’s bike to use too much fuel may result
in them being tossed off the bike. This only served to cement
the story that this is in fact what happened to poor Amy, she
was causing Rob’s bike to use too much fuel so he tossed her
off his bike. Perhaps a new nickname is in order for Rob - not
only should he be known as Lenscap, but now perhaps ‘Tossa’
could be added. Perhaps we should have a vote, maybe it
could be raised in general business at the next club meeting.
Ride safe

I
’m led to believe it’s only a few weeks until M&W
move into their refurbished store, possibly a week
after Easter, and I’m really looking forward to seeing
how she scrubs up after the fit out. It will be nice to
have a bit of elbowroom at the
coffee percolator so Da-barista
can do his thing whilst surveying
what’s going on below. New
stock, new bikes, maybe even
the occasional opening special I
guess, it’s all happening.
I’m also looking forward to our
April HOG Night, our first at our
new meeting venue at Brothers
Grange Community Sports Club
(formally Crushers) 41 Agincourt
Street, Grange. All the times
remain the same, just a new
location. The food is great, staff
pretty friendly, and the venue
itself is very clean and tidy, hope
to see you there. We did enjoy
some great times at Morningside
but unfortunately the receivers moved in and we had to
move out.
Yes, Kim’s April Ride was one to be remembered for all
kinds of reasons, great ride and weather. I mentioned to
Gail Duncan as we were stopped at the lights going up
Mt. Mee, “Gee I get around here three time faster than
my first attempt all those years ago.” Gail said “me too!“
Thanks for the opportunity Kim.
Rob Whitmore Lenscap or Tossa. Lola and Woggie will
remember the day because they didn’t get home until
11:30 that night. By the time they got home, then went
back to the Nambour Hospital to bring Amy home, it had
become a very long day. God bless
Woggie and Lola, and get well soon
Amy, (you’re my greatest gossip
gatherer.)
It was just after the good-bye stop
when the heavens opened up. By
that time, Da-Springer was tucked
up under the cover in the garage as
we had left (Da-Springer and I) at
Peachester. Glenn had borrowed
a Fatboy Low for the day while his
Ultra was out of action, and he got
me to take home his back pack in
my saddle bags as the Fatboy had
nothing to carry stuff. His iPad was
on board with me, nice and dry,
how lucky! It takes quite a bit to dry
out those little suckers. And Glenn
will remember that day too.
RIDE AND HAVE FUN!
Regards…
Amy Lincoln will remember the ride because Lenscap
pushed her off his bike and broke her wrist. No he didn’t!
Amy’s got two left feet and tripped, but we’ll still call

Hogwash EPUB Version for Smartphones
If you have a smartphone or tablet you can download a version of Hogwash from the BrisHOG website that is about half the size of the
PC version and will display text better on small devices. To view the EPUB version you will need to install an EPUB viewer App. These are
available free from Google Play for Android devices with FBReader and Aldiko being two of the many options available. iPhone and iPad
users can search for EPUB readers at the Apple store. Please note that text and images may not line up as well as they do on a larger screen,
but at least the text will be readable. For this reason, if you have a larger screen tablet it is recommended to download the full PDF version of
Hogwash from the BrisHOG website. You will need a PDF viewer such as Acrobat or Polaris but many devices have them built in as standard.
As a guide, if its 5 inches or smaller go for the EPUB. If its 8 inches or bigger go for the PDF. If its in between then good luck - it really depends
on your eyesight.

For those that went on the Poker Run you will remember the spread put on at Morning tea. It was a
cracker, just not enough people there to do it justice. So let’s do it again! Given that you are not likely to
need lunch we will end the ride here.
This is only a short ride, but there is a lot crammed into it. This school narrowly missed closure last year
with funding cuts, so our help will again assist the P&C in a big way. Last time we took a couple of the kids
for a ride and it would be nice to do that again this time, so bring a spare helmet for a ride around the
block. The ride as I said is short, one tank of fuel, so a cheap day out, a nice bit of scenery, open throttle,
plenty of twisty bits, and some roads that we haven’t seen for a while.
A ride not to be missed.

April Ride
mishap for Libby who ended somewhat stranded as her
phone and wallet were with husband John, we had an
uneventful ride to morning tea.
Margie and her team at Peachester School did a good
job of feeding us all. The ladies there were very surprised
at how quickly we all arrived. They confirmed numbers
of around 150. (Nola, I thought that was 127?). It must
have been the great weather that brought everyone out
on the ride.
We headed for lunch via Kenilworth, up the Obi Obi for
a bit of fun, through Mapleton, and on to Yandina. What
a great run and did I mention how fantastic the weather
was?
Not a Ginger Ride
I
awoke early to a wonderful bright sunny warm day, not
a cloud in sight, and warm enough to not bother with a
jacket. The weather forecast read that there was a 90%
chance of rain, well there certainly wasn’t any sign of it
this morning. We got to Wackers early and there were
already quite a few there. The usual social banter was in
full swing as more people arrived for what was going to
be a great day. Nola gave me the official numbers of 127
registered riders and pillions which I quickly passed on by
phone to the morning tea and lunch venues before the
briefing. Speaking of which, where was Director Glenn?
Apparently his borrowed bike had a flat tyre and he was
organising another. The briefing was done including the
introduction of my crew consisting of; Wife Deb (can’t
forget her), TECs: Mark Shaw and Andrew Bowcock, and
green group leader: Brett Ward.
Lunch was at the Buderim Ginger Factory at Yandina. We
arrived at the car park on time and I got off my bike with
bikes pulling up all around me. Rob Whitmore pulled
up behind with Amy on the back. Now Amy decided to
dismount in a sightly unorthodox way and consequently
caught her right foot on the bike and fell forward off the
bike hitting the ground, face (helmet) first with arms and
legs following quickly onto the tarmac. I stepped forward
to help her up into a sitting position at which point she
started pointing with vigour at her hurt left wrist. She
was promptly bundled off to hospital by ambulance
where they discovered that she had a very badly broken
wrist. There were some questions about whether Rob
pushed her, but being a witness I can assure you that he
didn’t, (but the yelling just before hand!!!)
So we set off with a few advanced corner markers;
Smurf, Squirt and Frogy, via Samford, Dayboro, Mt. Mee
to Peachester School in perfect weather. Apart from an
early green group divergence and an unfortunate small

I had the opportunity to arrange a guest speaker, Stuart
Hooper, of world’s fastest Velocette motor cycle fame,
who recently (4 weeks ago) reset his own record of 176
mph to 183 mph which is just under 300 kph. Having a
guest speaker for lunch is not something that we normally
do, but I thought the opportunity to have Stuart talk to us
was too good to miss. It was really great to get an insight
into the world of very high speed record challenges.
The details such as the varying conditions of the salt
lake surface and the experimental nature of significant
modifications to engines and the risks of tyre failure at
such speeds are all things that generally we do not think
about. It was great to see his Velocette motorcycle on
display at the Ginger Factory.
We left Yandina in perfect weather with still no sign of
any possible rain, and headed across to Coolum Beach
with a quick run up a hill, just to take the ride past my
parents place so they could see and hear it (along with
their neighbours). Then out to the beach front to see the
ocean which was sparkling in this wonderful weather. I
think I’ve already mentioned how good the weather was.
We re-joined the highway at Sippy Downs and headed
into the Shell at Wild Horse Mountain for the goodbye
stop.

off straight away rather than get a coffee at Maccas as
some members had shown me the storm cells on the
weather radar. So off we went at great haste to try and
get through without getting wet. Yeah, nice thought but
really wishful thinking. It was a good thing the official
HOG ride was over as there were bikes everywhere on the
highway rushing towards what looked like Armageddon,
with incredibly dark purple menacing clouds that were
somewhat alarming to look at. So it was inevitable that
we were going to get wet, and I don’t mean a little! Did
I mention how good the weather had been? Well now
the 90% rain prediction was absolutely true. We made
a hasty stop under an over-pass along with 15 other
bikes to put on wet weather gear (those that had it) and
amongst the very heavy rain and strong winds, a few
where heard to comment on how good the weather had
been…up till now!
So despite the very wet and wild end, it was a great day. I
am very thankful to all who came along and made it such
a success. Also thanks to my crew; Deb, Mark, Andrew,
and Brett.

this as happening, but it appears
that this is not uncommon in
Dyna’s, so keep an eye (or and
ear) on yours!
So what is the go with the increase
in junk mail coming through our
letterbox of late? I know Easter
is upon us, but surely there
cannot be that many different
flavours and combinations of
eggs to command so many trees
to be cut down and distributed
as catalogues as you would
normally see at Christmas time?
Woo hoo, fingers crossed that
that’s my three done and dusted!
I am on information overload
with all these brochure deliveries
including the three free local
newspapers we receive weekly.
Usually I would be a tosser and
donate them very generously, still folded neatly into
the recycling collection, but I have been information
starved recently, and I was using these to satisfy my
appetite for local knowledge.
My computer had a meltdown recently while installing
antivirus software, and took technicians a good while
to sort out their own creation! You do not appreciate
the part a computer plays in your life…until you don’t
have it anymore. I guess it’s a bit like having a nice
Harley in your garage, and knowing that when the
whim takes you, it can be fired up and you can ride off
into the sunset. Until something goes wrong with that
too! Thankfully that is a rare occurrence.
They say things come in threes, first the ABS in my
new car went AWOL a couple of weeks ago, then my
computer, and on the ride this month, my bike was
making some noises which concerned me greatly.
Bring on the service team at Morgan and Wacker!
Speaking of tossers as mentioned
briefly above, our very best
wishes go out to one of our
freshest associate members for
a quick recovery on her wrist, on
the occasion of being “tossed”
off the bike at lunch time on
the April ride. Amy, we are all
thinking of you, and rest assured
your sponsoring member Assistant Director Rob
Whitmore will be constantly reminded of this eventful
lunch stop.
I have been a bit tardy in getting our Committee
minutes to the webmaster to publish on the website
as promised, but these will hopefully be up by the time
you are reading this Hogwash edition.
For everyone attending the Rally at Cairns, may you all
travel safe and have a great time, and hope to see you
there or somewhere along the journey.
Cheers all,
Vicki

he cost of our monthly Club
Ride is $2 for full members,
$5 for provisional members (and
guest riders) and free for pillions.
These are the costs for attending
a Club Ride. We’re not talking
big dollars here but some people
seem to think they can register for
the ride and do the ride without
paying their ride fees. It does not
matter if you are doing the full ride
to the goodbye stop or a shorter
ride to the lunch venue or morning
tea. The fact is if you do the ride,
ride fees are due, no matter how
short your ride is. To those who
refuse to pay or sneak through
without paying, we know who you
are, and you know who you are.
Brisbane HOG is an association
of Harley riders, many of whom you probably refer to as
friends. So, when you’re not paying your ride fees, you’re
not only ripping off your club, you’re ripping off your
mates.
Being a Committee member is an honour. I consider it
a privilege to be able to contribute to the running of
BrisHOG (as would all of our Committee Members) but this
comes at a considerable personal cost. It is not unusual to
spend 1 or 2 days a week attending to club business and
at times of high demand (membership renewals, special
events, etc) it can be even more.
Without having experience at other
committee roles, I can only imagine
that other committee members
have similar demands placed on
them and have similar pressure
placed on them. I am aware of
what is required of me and I accept
that, but what I do not and will not
accept is hassle from people or
smart-arse comments because I’m
not available 7 days a week for club
business, or cannot respond to your
demands immediately. These are
voluntary positions that we attend
to in our spare time for the benefit
of all members.
I have said several times that the
Treasurer’s role has been tidied
up and procedures put into place to enable the role to
be performed by anyone with basic computer skills and
bookkeeping knowledge. Therefore I invite any of you out
there to nominate for the next committee. I am happy to
spend the time with anyone who wishes to nominate for
the role of Treasurer and be mentored.
Thanks,
Norm (Sticky)

Iron BUtt
T
he Iron Butt Ride has taken us in a number of different directions since its inception in 2007, this year we headed for
the Central NSW Town of Coonabarabran. Waking to absolutely clear skies and a crisp Autumn morning, the scene was
set for a great weekend of riding. On arrival at the start point I reckon two thirds of the riders were there waiting, with the
usual chatter and banter that these rides bring.
Passports were issued and the various groups left the servo headed for the cooler climes of the Toowoomba range via
Crows Nest, for the first ‘get-in’ question of the day. After that it was South and West via Oakey, Pittsworth, Karara, Texas,
Warialda, Bingara and Narrabri. It was crossing the Killarney range that I, and a couple of other people experienced that
butt clenching moment on loose gravel, but after negotiating the spoon drain and checking out the rock wall I was able
to carry on. Harley’s handle pretty well off road! And so we reached Coona with plenty of time for a swim, a cleansing ale
and more bravado before we headed to the Bowlo for dinner. The crew at the bowling club did a great job with a great
selection of meal choices and deserts. The Iron Butt Virgins were anointed, Ronnie and Ches joined us with Ronnie having
his trusty note book handy tuning in to all the gossip. Doug presented Glenn with the new Chapter flag and the lucky draw
took forever. Coffee and tea were consumed and it was pretty much lights out by 10.00pm.
Sunday morning again had crystal clear skies and was a cool 14 degrees. After a great breakfast, again at the bowling
club we headed off with the sun directly in front of us, sorry about that folks. With eyes straining for the slightest sign of
wildlife the posse headed to Gunnedah, Manilla, Barraba, Bingara, Inverell via Copeton Dam, Ashford and Tenterfield. It
was approaching Tenterfield that our luck ran out and the heavens opened, lightning, thunder and bucket loads of rain
kept everyone focussed on the last 200ks. Then it was down the range and through Drake and Tabulam to Jimboomba
where we finished. The very helpful Vicky V was there to check everyone in and send them home, although some of the
foolhardy just wanted to do the ride again.
The average ks were 1651 plus ks to and from the start, this gave us collectively about 100,000 kilometres. No major
incidents but plenty of happy faces. Thanks to all involved, those that participated, those that did the recces and Woggie
and Lola for their chuffing along in the support vehicle.
So regardless of who is in the AD’s chair next year, make sure you get the dates locked in early.

N
ow here’s a tip for you - Zip Lock plastic bags! Just the item you
need when you’re out and about on a HOG Ride, just like Kim’s
April Ride just gone (or any other ride for that matter.) Just the
ticket when the heavens open up and you cop a floggin’ as did just
about everyone this month, and I bet most of you out there were
concerned about just how many litres of rain water my mobile can
take on board before it stopped working. Zip Lock bags take up no
room at all and can be a real lifesaver! So I’m going to ask you all at
our May meeting to produce your Zip Lock bags from your pockets
or suffer the consequences! Now I’ll see who reads my articles.
And on the subject of riding in the rain, you would have to say those
five young ladies (Mal Gotham’s daughter and friends) that came
along on Kim’s ride, and everyone knows who I’m talking about;
must have had second thoughts by days end. But then again Lycra
pants, tank tops and singlets, (and there wasn’t much of them,)
would have probably dried out way before our leathers would. Come
again anytime ladies! I do believe Pete and Rob were getting offered
big money for some of their happy snaps of the day. Wonder why?
I didn’t hand out any fines at our last meeting, but I did make a few observations, such as:
• On the Iron Butt Ride at Coonabarabran where we had three ladies: Noela, Lola and Paola, they could form a
singing sister group (the La Sisters) with a name like that!
• There are quite a few comments going around on how cool Carl looks with hair, so different to seeing it shaved.
But Rob Whitmore says, “that’s nothing, you should see how hairy his back is!” I’m a bit concerned as to how Rob
knows this.
• Woggie approached Aaron and asked why his jeans were rolled up? The legs are too long he exclaimed! “If they
come in black I’ll get a pair,” said Woggie. Aaron was talking about the legs of his jeans. Woggie was talking about
legs.
• Our editor said in his editorial, “Stand next to Ronnie and that would get your photo into the Hogwash. We
can always Photoshop him out later.” Well, that’s the last time I’m combing my hair for a photo! (Sponge more
like! Ed.)
• It would appear Ultras need some extra tender love and attention; recently Rob (Lenscap / Tossa) Whitmore lost
the exhaust system off his Ultra, Darren Binion on his Knuckle Head (or is he the knuckle head) tipped his Ultra
over and broke some ribs in the process. Glad to hear DB is well on the road to recovery, and I don’t mean the
road from Geelong to Brisbane. John Tojnar copped a Springer front wheel to the back of his Ultra, thank heavens
for gaffer tape until he gets back from the Cairns Rally and the new parts go on. And last of all, Glenn’s Ultra died
on the way back from the Iron Butt Ride. A bent exhaust valve I believe, luckily Glenn had the luxury of Lea-Ann’s
Springer to bring him home. Ah, those Springers, don’t ya just love em!

LOH Report
H
ow lovely it is to be ‘back in the saddle’ of the BrisHOG
committee. And I am especially happy to be involved in
this way – as Ladies of Harley Officer. This role was never more
important to me than when I did the Iron Butt ride for the first
time just recently. I was determined this year that I was going to
do that 1600km ride, but I also know
that in the weeks leading up to the
Iron Butt I started to get worried as
to how I would cope – not my butt of
course, plenty of padding there, but
would I get tired? Would I get up the
Sunday morning dreading that I had to
do it all again? I didn’t of course. I had
a fantastic time and enjoyed every bit
of the distance, but I did wonder how
many of our lady riders in particular,
are wary of rides like the Iron Butt for
all the reasons I was.
riders, we might meet earlier at Wackers and do a little ride
over. Leather and chocolate is always a good look!
• 18 May: Speaking of the MDQ, if you haven’t already
booked your seat on the bus this year get onto Marg
Krantz and make sure you do.
Theme for this year is 1980’s.
Don’t
underestimate
the
importance of the ladies bus
either. Yes we provide and help
out at the morning tea, but the
additional entertainment and
photo opportunities we provide
to the paying pillions is priceless.
Similarly I wonder how many of our
lady riders are wary of organizing
and leading a monthly ride, perhaps
terrified of leading a pack of riders
of that size. What if I have to do a
u-turn? What if I’m too slow? And
to the lady pillions, how many of you
have been unsure whether Ladies of
Harley are even for you – you don’t ride after all? But what if
you did come? What might happen if you decided you wanted
to ride?
Well ladies, enough with the ‘What if’s?’. Ladies of Harley
is about getting out there and doing everything you’ve ever
wanted, be it pillion, ride socially, or ride long distances, and I
hope that my role as Ladies of Harley will provide you with the
different experiences to try, in an environment of other ladies
that feel the same way. So what have I got in store for you.
More information will be provided to you as these events get
closer of course, but I thought to kick us off, I’d give you a few
dates for your diary :
•
10 May: May is a busy one for the club generally with the
Cairns rally and all the planning around the MDQ, but I think
it’s important that we ladies get together over cocktails and
dessert and talk tactics. Dessert is booked for the Freestyle
Tout Dessert bar in Fortitude Valley for 6.00pm. For those
30
•
•
14-15 June: Di has planned a
combined chapter overnighter. I
don’t have all the details on this
one yet, but when I do, emails will
go out.
•
For those who can’t make the
overnighter or for those after
more, I have also organised the
Paddington Retro Mile Walk for
the 21st June. Get your shopping
passport and spend the morning
visiting the historic buildings and
retro shops of the Latrobe Terrace
shopping district before meeting
at Sassafras for breakfast, brunch
or lunch – the menu choices are
endless! We should all then be
home early enough for the nights
swap meet.
And for the 20 July: Join the Ladies of Harley ride through
Esk and Ravensbourne to the Highfields Chocolate Cottage
for lunch.
As I said ladies, lots more thoughts and ideas but yours are
always welcome and wanted. If you want to help out with ideas
or organise an event, just grab me and let me know.
“When life throws you curves ladies, learn how to use them” –
that applies to riding too!

Safety Officer’s Report
i Everyone,
those who do not know. To help the public understand
we must set an example of what a good rider is.
It is Sunday night after the April Club Ride and another great
one it was. Kim and his crew did a
great job taking us up into the hills
and far away. I was one of the lucky
ones to just make it home before
the heavens opened, some were
not so lucky I am sure! It is times
like these I am grateful for living on
the north side of town.
The safety side of April’s ride
required me to chat to you all at
morning tea. It is not pleasant and
disappoints me to think that the
ride rules we set out as a club, for
one ride a month, are not taken
seriously. We are not trying to
be military-like about this but for
yours and other riders’ safety we
would like you to adhere to them.
A few points to consider when out on a club ride are:
1. Think of your fellow riders. If you are holding them
up, let them past. If you are overtaking dangerously,
endangering yourself and other riders around you and
don’t feel you can stop this practice, then maybe club
riding is not for you.
2. Think of what the cars around you must be thinking
about ridiculous, radical and irrational behaviour.
3. A big ride puts us on show and with the current laws in
Queensland we as riders are portrayed as undesirable to
My perfect ride will be when no-one
has a complaint that I feel needs my
attention. This will mean that safety
is being taken seriously and there
will be a reduced risk of incidences.
Call for Monthly Ride Captains
– Over the next couple of months I
would like everyone to think about
putting a team together to do a
monthly ride for next year. As Carl
is busy having to organise the MDQ
I am asking you on his behalf. This
year a lot of committee members
have been ride captains but it would
really be nice to have others taking
this on. If you are interested, either
email myself or Carl, or see us at
the meetings. You will be given the
rundown on how to structure a ride
etc.
Changes to Road Rules:
Fines and enforcement: A police fine for illegally stopping
in a disabled parking bay will now cost you $220.00.
(Taken from Department of Transport and Main Roads Web
Site – Changes to Road Rules 4.10.2013)
Ride Safe,
Mick
A passenger in a taxi heading for a railway station leaned over to ask the driver a question and gently
tapped him on the shoulder to get his attention. The driver screamed, lost control of the cab, nearly hit a
bus, drove up over the curb and stopped just inches from a large plate glass window. For a few moments
everything was silent in the cab. Then the shaking driver said “Are you OK? I’m so sorry, but you scared
the daylights out of me.” The badly shaken passenger apologized to the driver and said, “I didn’t realize
that a mere tap on the shoulder would startle someone so badly.” The driver replied, “No, no, I’m the
one who is sorry, it’s entirely my fault. Today is my very first day driving a cab. I’ve been driving a hearse
for 25 years.”

‘Sir’ Carlos
We are still looking for riders for the
MDQ ride, come on folks, this is our
Chaplain
which is only good if you don’t have a pin code to limit access.
A good alternative is the ICE card you were given when you
first joined Brisbane HOG but of course this is only a good
option if you fill it out and carry the card with you. Also you
need to regularly check and update the details should they
change. Another alternative is to let your riding mates know
who to contact if something goes wrong. How well do you
know who you ride with?
I was reminded of this on the last ride when ‘Tosser’ I mean
‘Lenscap’ err Rob decided to toss Amy off his bike and we
needed to contact someone. If Amy had of been unconscious
or not lucid enough to give us details of who to call, it would
have been much harder for those helping.
You need to remember it is not always just about you but also
those who care about you. So for everyone’s peace of mind
make sure you and your mates have their ICE contacts up to
date and readily available in an emergency.
M
ost of you would have heard about ICE! No not the
drug you’ll get arrested for, or the cold stuff you find
in the freezer. I’m talking about when something goes wrong
you need an ‘In Case of Emergency’ (ICE) contact. In fact you
actually need more then one ICE contact. You may not think
this is relevant to you but it is to those around you, or those
that care when something goes wrong.
Most people have put an ICE contact or two into their phone,
32
Yes, riding a motorcycle is a lot of fun but it also has a degree
of risk. So you should do anything you can to limit the risk and
keep your loved-ones’ minds at ease. Something as simple
and easy as accessible ICE contacts will help with that peace of
mind. Stay safe and keep the shiny bits up.
Also remember to let me know of those who are sick, injured
or need some help.

Ronnie always wanted a pair of authentic Harley Motorcycle Boots, so, seeing some on sale, he bought
them and wore them home. Walking proudly, he sauntered into the kitchen and said to his wife, “Notice
anything different about me?” Cheryl looked him over, “Nope.”
Frustrated, Ronnie stormed off into the bathroom, undressed and walked back into the kitchen completely
naked except for the boots. Again he asked Cheryl, a little louder this time, “Notice anything different
NOW?” Cheryl looked up and exclaimed, “Ronnie, what’s different? It’s hanging down today, it was
hanging down yesterday, it’ll be hanging down again tomorrow!”
Furious, Ronnie yelled, “AND DO YOU KNOW WHY IT’S HANGING DOWN, CHERYL?” “Nope” she replied.
“IT’S HANGING DOWN, BECAUSE IT’S LOOKING AT MY NEW BOOTS!!!”
Without changing her expression, Cheryl replied, “Shoulda’ bought a new helmet then Ronnie!”

I will be collecting all contributions on Saturday 17th May where possible, the

to read them:

Your bike must be in a road worthy condition.
Make sure you arrive with a full tank of fuel.
Don’t be late; we leave at the scheduled departure time.
Please pay attention to the Safety/Ride brief.
Never pass the ‘Ride Captain’, Red bandanna on right arm.
Ride in the same lane as ‘Ride Captain’ on multi lane highways.
Ride in staggered formation, never ride side by side.
Fill gaps in stagger by moving forward, never fill gaps by moving directly left or
right.
Once in staggered formation, stay in either left or right wheel track.
On winding or narrow roads, ride in single file, use your normal cornering technique & give plenty of space to
bike in front.
If you break down, stay with your bike in clear view of Tail End Charlie’s (TEC’s) & back up vehicle. Make a clear
signal to them if you require assistance.
If you are a solo rider, stop for break down to offer a lift if needed.
First Aid kits are carried with the Safety Officer & in the back up vehicle.
Our rides are prepared by ‘Ride Captains’ as their way of sharing a favourite destination with fellow HOGS, IT IS
NOT A RACE! Take your time, enjoy the day with your HOG family.
Remember, the TEC’s & backup vehicle will always be behind you!
Failure to follow ride rules and to ride in an unsafe or irresponsible manner could see
the offending rider/s asked to leave the ride.
Corner Marker Guidelines
The reason for corner markers is to ensure the group stays on the ride route, and has plenty of warning of any devia-
tion or clarification of the road being ridden.
If we all follow these basic guidelines, our system will not fail and all riders will arrive at the same destination in the
best possible time.
• The corner marker will be the rider immediately behind the ‘Ride Captain’. Leave a double space to give time to
react to the Ride Captains signal.
• The rider will be alert for the ‘Ride Captain’s’ signal & to stop where indicated.
• Once the corner marker is safely positioned he will indicate the direction of the ride by pointing and using the
appropriate turn signal.
• The rider or pillion will not remove helmet or any riding gear. They must be ready to move on immediately, when
signalled by TEC (ORANGE VEST).
• The TEC’s will not stop for you! You must be ready to go once signalled.
• In the case of a major delay, the back up TEC will ride ahead and advise of delay.
These guidelines are provided for information to enhance overall safety and ride enjoyment. Ultimately you are responsible for exercising your own judgment and making your own decisions whilst riding your Harley.
Remember our motto, “Ride & Have Fun”. We are members of BRISBANE HOG for the enjoyment of riding our
Harleys & sharing the fun!
