List of Museums FeMurod 1n Anatomical Theatre
Alabama Muaeum of the Hullh Sclencea : Birmingham, Alabama
The earliest recorded donation to what became the Alabama Museum of the Heal th
Sciences was an ou·of·date apothecary scale given in 1946 to t he University of Alabama
and Its Medical Center In Birmingham. Three-dimensional object s were given throughout the
decades and the Museum was offlclally established in 198 1.
Today t he Museum has over 4,000 objects Including hundreds of wet specimens preserved
under the direction of pathologi st Or. William Boyd, who wintered in Birmingham during the
mld·ZOth century. Other t reasured collection pieces are nineteen wax pathological
specimens by London sculptor Joseph Towne and purchased by Or. Josiah Nott In 1860 for
the first medical college of Alabama. From the donated collections of Or. Lawrence
Reynolds, after whom the Reynolds Historical Ubrary is named, are eleven rare anatomical
manikJilS of the 1Sth to 17th centuries.
Dedicated to colectJng medical-f'elated artifacts used primarily in the southeastern Uno ted
States, the Alabama fo.luseum of the Health Sciences cares for many significant pieces
developed and/ or used by health care professionals as tead!ing tools or for patient care on
the state and speaficaly the I.Jnvefscty of Alabama at BGlingham.

The Anatomical Venus is a compelline and unsettlin~ look at the eroticised female waxworks used
around lhe world lo demonslrale analomy in medical schools in lhe 191h cenlury. II lraces the
evolution of these eniQmatic and sensual sculptures from the death masks, wax effiQies and votive
offerin~s of the Renaissance to the anatomically instructive Venus wax fiQures of Ihe Enli~htenment.
