CROSS COUNTRY Macalester college Macalester Athletics 2010 CROSS CO men’s Men’s Coach Matt Haugen Matt Haugen has directed the MAC PACK cross country and track middle distance & distance programs since 2003. He has guided his Macalester cross country teams to four top-four MIAC, and four top-10 Central Region finishes, and was the MIAC Coach of the Year in his inaugural season. Macalester cross country runners have achieved All-MIAC, and AllRegion honors each season, and earned an NCAA berth in 2009. On the oval, Haugen has coached All-MIAC performers in the 800M, 1500M, mile, 5000M, 10,000M, and 4x800M and distance medley relays. His track runners have set six school records, and have posted over 60 all-time top 10 Macalester performances. MAC PACK student-athletes have also earned AllAmerican Academic Team honors since 2006. Prior to his arrival at Macalester, Haugen was the USA Triathlon National Teams coach and program director from 1997 through the 2000 Olympic Games. Haugen was the US Olympic Committee Triathlon Coach of the Year three times. Haugen served as a faculty member at St. Olaf College from 1985 to1997, where he coached All-Americans in cross country, Nordic skiing, and track. His first collegiate coaching position was at Macalester (1985), where he coached the MIAC women’s 100-meter dash champion. He received a BA in psychology from St. Olaf College, an MS in exercise science from Penn State, and was a doctoral candidate at the University of Minnesota, with an emphasis on sport psychology. Haugen was the MIAC cross country champion, and an All-American (5th place), in 1977 at St. Olaf. She was head women’s cross country and women’s track & field coach at Luther College for 17 years, 1989 to 2005, before pursuing other interests as an instructor in Tacoma, Wash. “I am very excited to be the women’s cross country and assistant track coach at Macalester,” said Emerson. “I consider it a great privilege and honor to be given this opportunity to work at such an outstanding college.” At Luther she led very successful programs, receiving Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) Coach of the Year honors six times in cross country and three times in track and field. Emerson led the Norse to a third place NCAA Division III finish in cross country in 2000 and a fourth place national finish in outdoor track and field in 1997. Emerson coached two NCAA Division III cross country individual champions and six All-Americans and won six IIAC titles and two Central Regional titles. Her Luther track and field athletes won 45 conference championships and 45 All-America certificates. Coach Emerson graduated cum laude from Mary College in Bismarck, N.D., in 1986 and earned master’s in education in 1988 from North Dakota State University.
