The Topic for this month concerns single children “Parenting of Single Child’’ There are many of us who have been blessed with a child- whether boy or girl- it hasn’t mattered to us and we as parents have been happy with one and opted out of an addition to our family. There are of course advantages and disadvantages. The advantages -- we can focus on our “one”, spend well for better education, other activities and give him/her a luxurious life and also shower all our love and affection, warmth and attention. It is also considered that a single child is a lonely child, selfish and can never share with others, nor is comfortable playing or interacting with others. It is true, however, that the parenting of a single child is different from that of multiple children. The only child does develop a close relationship with parents, builds self-esteem, attains high grasping power, is more expressive; probably better in education, and receives more support and encouragement from his/her parents. We see our child developing a kind of loneliness and unable to share thoughts and feelings—this is probably why single kids are closer to their parents. The single child also doesn’t go through sibling rivalry and may possibly not learn the skills of tackling problems in life or that of handling inattention. And there is an absence of sibling support later in life. There are however, some ways in which we, as parents of our single child, can support and encourage our child to overcome these difficulties and turn negatives into positives. Encourage friendships- As an only child it is possible that your child may keep away from interacting with others and may “cling” to you. As a parent, encourage your child to interact with others and develop friendship with others. This will help your child to get along better with others. 15 In fact, when your child is interacting/ playing with others, do observe and if he/she doesn’t share toys, you can help him/her realize the being selfish can only result in loneliness and no friendships and so no joy. Teach social skills- It is up to us as parents, to teach our child to share, interact or mingle and get along with others, as also compromising and being considerate towards others in order for our child not to miss out on the lack of siblings in the family. Planning get-togethers among friends as also extended family often does help as well. Set Boundaries- You can guide and teach your child to know when to demand attention and when to be him/ herself. It would be to the advantage of both you and your child not to have him/her dictate terms and/ or have the focus only on him/herself. Your child can be helped to realize that parents too have their own responsibilities and duties and need time for themselves. Do encourage or appreciate it when your child follows this. Develop Self-determination—Unknowingly, your child can become totally dependent on you for moral support in any or all activities. Encourage your child to be self reliant, to engage him/ her and have fun. You need not be your child’s entertainer all the time. But, the fact remains- single child families are here to stay.
