Be careful to whom you entrust it. For over 80 years Shure has been assisting the world’s finest communicators, entertainers, singers and musicians, just like you, to capture and communicate their sound to their audience. No other microphone company has the Shure depth of engineering horsepower and industry knowledge. This knowledge was instrumental in the development of the Shure SM57 and Shure SM58 microphones that have become both legends and industry standards. Both these microphones capture the spirit of the entire Shure line. Reliability, built to withstand the rigors of the gigging musician and entertainer, and natural sound engineered to capture your performance the way you want your audience to hear it. Research and development efforts continue daily at Shure in order to produce microphones that will faithfully capture the constantly changing and evolving direction of musical styles. Shure is recognised as the industry’s leading microphone manufacturer. No matter where in the world your music takes you, you will find Shure microphones being used on stage and in the studio. The microphone is the most personal part of your sound system. Choosing a microphone that suits your sound is a job for you alone. Put your trust in products from a company that understands the passion and commitment required to succeed in music. A company which believes the only sound that is truly important is your sound. Page 4 Things to consider when choosing a microphone 1 Do you need a rugged construction? If a microphone is going to be used in a live situation then its type of construction is an important consideration. How is it going to be treated? Does it need to be able to take a licking and keep on ticking? 2 Dynamic microphone Vs Condenser microphone? Dynamic microphones are the workhorse of the live music industry. They sound good and are particularly rugged. Condenser microphones, on the other hand, require phantom or battery power but have a wider frequency response. However, they are not as durable as their dynamic cousin. 3 What type of direction or pick-up will work best for your needs? Cardioid Pattern: The most popular pattern. Picks up most sound “in-front” of the mic, less from the sides and nearly nothing from behind the mic. Excellent for stage work. In studio applications it will pick up more of the source and less of the room, which makes it great for home and project studios. Supercardioid Pattern: Even tighter pattern than the cardioid. Terrific for separation of sounds on stage and capturing a more intimate source sound in the home or project studio. Omnidirectional Pattern: All round frequency response and sound pick-up. Great as a room mic for recording. If recording space is acoustically warm, it makes a terrific vocal microphone. 4 What type of frequency response does the microphone have? Flat: Wide, uniform response. Consistent sensitivity through frequency range. Tailored: Tuned to accentuate specific types of voices or instruments. Adjustable: User changeable frequency response. Page 5 Wired Microphones Performance Gear (PG) Series The gear that allows all musicians to get their hands on Shure’s engineering excellence. And all come with a mic cable included as standard. Page 17 In-Ear Monitoring PSM 200 Systems Why go In-Ear? • In-ear monitor systems allow you to control the sound levels of your own monitor mix. This will not only protect you from hearing damage but will also allow you to sing at the level that is most comfortable for you, helping protect your vocal chords as well. • With a floor wedge, the amplifier projects the same sound level toward everyone, which may be too loud for some performers and too soft for others. • With in-ear monitor systems you have the ability to move around a stage whilst getting a consistent monitor mix. • Since there is nothing between your ears and the sound, you can hear the subtle instruments, notes and voices better. • There are no stage monitors, decreasing the risk of feedback and giving you more space for the performance. In-Ear Monitor Systems for Working Musicians Affordable Monitoring. Get In-Ear from here. • PSM 200 is scaleable. You can start out with a hardwired system and go wireless at a later stage, simply by adding a Wireless TransMixer. • Hard-wired systems are suitable if performing on small stages and not needing to move around a lot. • Hard-wired systems are perfect for drummers. The experience gathered from this focused approach has allowed Soundcraft to lead the mixing desk field from live sound reinforcement to post production - and everywhere in between. You will find Soundcraft’s mixing desks on tour with internationally famous artists, in top class recording studios, radio stations, television stations and hard at work in clubs and pubs world wide. The key to Soundcraft’s success centres on using their vast industry experience to design and manufacture innovative and easy to use products while maintaining uncompromising sound quality. This dedication to preserving the quality of sound is the number one reason why you should be considering a Soundcraft console for your sound system or your studio. Musicians, entertainers and sound engineers in the eighty-eight geographical areas in which Soundcraft is distributed are very happy they considered Soundcraft. You will be too. Innovation In Live Sound Powered Vs Unpowered Consoles It can sound confusing but all it means is that a powered console has an in-built amplifier that provides power to the loudspeakers. The console plugs directly into the loudspeakers and there is no need for an external power amp in the system. Unpowered consoles send the signal to an external power amp first and the amp in turn powers the loudspeakers. Page 22 Mixing Consoles Gigrac Series Available in two models (GigRac 600 and the stereo GigRac 1000st), GigRac combines a fully-featured 8 channel mixer with studio-quality digital effects and potent power amplification in a portable package that sets up in minutes. Page 27 T Take a look in the effects rack at any live concert or in any recording studio and you will find at least one dbx product. Led by David Blackmore, a brilliant engineer, (he invented the Voltage Control Amplifier in the early 70’s) dbx has introduced innovation after innovation to our industry, making the company a household name in audio. With each passing year, the stunning dbx legacy continues to grow, fuelled by a staff comprising of musicians and engineers with a fanatical commitment to doing it for you. You, the lunch box working class musician, the weekend wedding band, the Grammy award winning engineer, the mega star, the guys who make music for the heck of it in the garage or the newly aspiring producer of the month. You endure the often uncharitable business of music and carve a life of unusual reward from this ever challenging industry. It is this heritage, spirit and character that inspires dbx and every product they make. Evolution… Revolution Page 28 Direct Boxes DB10 & DB12 At dbx, when they do something, they do it right. So when they decided to create their new direct injection boxes, they didn’t settle for the same old tired approach to direct box design. One look at the new dB10 Passive and dB12 Active direct boxes will tell you that these are clearly different. With their bullet-proof construction, and extraordinary audio performance to rival their looks, finally there’s a direct box worthy of the dbx name. Utilising custom dbx mu-metal-shielded audio transformers, high-quality Neutrik® connectors, and low-noise circuitry preserves the sonic integrity and true characteristics of the signal source. Both boxes include a pad switch that accomodates instrument, line and even speaker level signals. Take even more control of your sound by utilising the polarity invert switch to set the phase relationship between the direct and mic'd sound. This reputation is built on a platform of technical innovation that delivers reliability and quality of sound. In 1955 Leo Fender incorporated JBL D130 loudspeakers into his guitar amplifiers, a very important element in the development of the famous Fender sound. In 1969 Woodstock was powered by JBL and as the concert sound industry grew with the popularity of contemporary music, JBL became the product of choice for musicians, touring sound companies, stadiums and clubs worldwide. JBL strives to blend ground breaking acoustic technologies, new components, and the needs of performers to create the most advanced products available today. From the light and extremely portable EON Series through to the thundering power of the VerTec Series, JBL is the sound of the music industry. No Compromise Performance with engineering Brilliance Page 42 Passive Crossovers Vs Active Crossovers A loudspeaker cabinet with a Passive Crossover means it has an inbuilt Crossover. It receives the signal from the amplifier channel, then separates the frequencies and sends the relevant frequency to the appropriate loudspeaker (e.g. tweeters and woofers). When a loudspeaker doesn’t have an inbuilt crossover, an Active Crossover is required at the signal processing stage. Having a loudspeaker with a Passive Crossover means you don’t need a Crossover at the signal processor stage and you can run your system off the one amplifier. Therefore it is cheaper. The down side is that as the Crossover is happening in the loudspeaker cabinet, there is loss of power in the signal by the time it has been converted into sound, as some energy was used up separating the frequencies. This loss will not have a noticeable affect on the type of systems used for small pubs, clubs and halls. Powered Vs Unpowered Speakers In our Mixing Console section, we discussed the benefits of powered vs. unpowered mixing consoles. The same principals apply with powered and unpowered loudspeakers. Powered loudspeakers have internal amplifiers. Therefore you don’t need an amplifier in your system. They also have Crossovers, but as it is a powered loudspeaker it is called an internal Active Crossover. So another component in your system can be contained internally in the loudspeakers. Powered loudspeakers make your system very portable. Portable systems are perfect for pubs, beergardens, clubs, halls, etc. They are ideal for solo artists, duets and DJs. The StanTouch® interface can be used for scratching, scrubbing, and navigating through digital audio. The tactile buttons, triggers, and virtual faders can also control samples, pitch, effects, cue and loop points, and other mappable functions. Multiple finger touches can even prompt quick kills on EQ’s or transform effects on volume. The wide, touch-sensitive crossfader not only allows for seamless slow blends between decks, but is also able to detect (like the rest of the sliders) multiple finger presses, allowing for quick transform effects all in one control. The multicolor buttons can easily perform transport controls for starting and stopping playback, setting loops, doing EQ kills, or engaging effects without requiring a separate trigger controller. In this day and age, when it is so easy to purchase online from overseas websites, it is no wonder we get blinded by seemingly cheap products out of the USA and Asia. But, is it always worth it…? DON’T BE FOOLED! Did you know, if you are NOT buying your product from an Authorised Australian Dealer, then you are very likely buying a product that is not compliant with local safety legislation and therefore is illegal to use in this country?! We all want to spend as little as possible, and get as much as we can out of the transaction, but what we sometimes forget to do is factor in the intangible stuff. So, what extra value do you get from buying from an Authorised Australian Dealer? You Are Buying A Legal And Safe Product When you buy from an Authorised Australian Dealer you know the product is C-Tick approved, you know the external power supply is safe, you know the voltage is correct for Australia, you know the appropriate taxes and duties have been paid so you won’t get chased for them later, and you know if the product is wireless that you are operating in the allowed radio spectrum for your area. It’s safe. It’s legal. That’s the magic of buying from those who do it all for you and something you cannot put a price on. You Are Not Buying A Counterfeit Product Imagine the disappointment when you receive a poorly performing counterfeit that although physically looks the same, is absolutely not. Now imagine the damage and cost when your powered loudspeaker shorts out your PA system or worse blows up your garage! These products are potentially dangerous due to absolutely no safety standards being applied, and they are most definitely illegal to use, buy or import into Australia. Warranty And After Sales Service ALL new product bought from an Authorised Australian Dealer will have a local comprehensive warranty included. There is likely to be a Service Agent in your area, but if not, the store you bought it from will be able to send it back for you. Not under warranty? That’s OK; there are still a full range of spare parts and internationally trained Service Technicians who can assist in helping you get your gear back up and running. Not sure how to use something, or a software feature troubling you? No problems, between your local store where you bought the goods, or the highly technical specialists at the Authorised Australian Distributors office, your queries can be answered and their expertise can be your on-tap knowledge base. It’s All Paid For & Included – No Hidden Costs To Bite You Later Freight, Duty, GST, Return Freight Costs if Dead on Arrival or later if faulty… who needs all that??? No-one! Especially not if you get into the situation where the product you bought is now just a really expensive paper weight because the guy on eBay you bought it from suddenly disappears, or the company in Singapore won’t answer your emails. Even worse, imagine seeing yourself on the next episode of Border Security because the Customs Department came calling and requesting proof that you are the authorised importer of that product! There’s a reason product sold in Australia is more expensive than product sold over the Internet by overseas companies. There’s also a reason why some items on-line just look ‘too good to be true’. Support your local economy and rest assured that when you buy from an Authorised Australian Dealer, the products you purchase are compliant and are cleared for use in Australia.
