VISA BASICS:
THE I NF O YOU N E E D TO M AKE T RAVE L E AS IE R
Y
ou’ve bought a ticket, booked a hotel and dug
your passport out of the drawer. Think you’re all
set to head to the airport? Not so fast. Depending
on your international destination, you might need one
all-important document to get past immigration: a visa.
Nearly 90 countries require U.S. citizens to have a visa,
so if you’ve got the urge to go globetrotting, it’s important
to be familiar with visa. There are almost infinite details,
but you can get started with the basics.
The most important thing to remember about visas is that,
while they can be complicated – and honestly, a bit of a
headache – there’s no shortage of help available. If the
process is a bit too intimidating to take on alone, travel
agents provide assistance, and tour companies often
make the arrangements as part of the package you buy.

POST UPTOWN DALLAS / DECEMBER 2013
1. CHECK YOUR
PASSPORT EXPIRATION
Virtually every country that has visa
requirements will want you to have a
significant amount of remaining validity
on your passport. So, if you’re headed
to, say, Vietnam or India, it’s often a
requirement that your passport be valid
for six months beyond the date you
leave (not enter!) your destination of
choice. Without it, you could be denied
your visa, and therefore, entry into the
country. Renewing your passport when
it’s down to 9-12 months of remaining
validity is a good idea.
TRAVELER
“Nearly 90 countries require U.S. citizens to have a
visa, so if you’ve got the urge to go globetrotting,
it’s important to be familiar with it.”
When you need the details of how
to get a visa, you should first check
the embassy or consulate website of
the country you plan to visit (or go to
the office, if you’re near one) and go
through the listed requirements with
a fine-tooth comb. However, if the
information you find there is confusing
(and it sometimes is!), the U.S. State
Department’s travel website, www.
state.gov/travel can often provide some
clarity.
3. PRE-ARRANGED VISAS
2. WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE
BET WEEN AN EMBASSY AND
A CONSUL ATE?
Though the terms are often used
interchangeably, they aren’t quite
the same thing. An embassy is the
bigger, permanent diplomatic mission,
generally located in a country’s capital.
A consulate is essentially a satellite
office, located in other major cities.
For example, Brazil’s embassy in the
United States is located in Washington,
D.C., but there are Brazilian consulates
in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Hartford,
Houston, L.A., Miami, New York and San
Francisco.
Visa applications are as different as
snowflakes, so don’t expect that after
you’ve done one for one country, it’ll be
the same for another. Many countries
require that you apply for a visa in
advance; as a traveler, that means
you need to do some planning ahead
of time. In some cases, to get a visa
in advance, you need to show proof
of transportation into and out of the
country (such as airline ticket bookings)
and other bookings (hotels, etc.). There
is almost always a fee associated with
the application process, but it varies
by country and the nationality of the
applicant.
4. VISAS ON ARRIVAL
Visas on arrival (often abbreviated to
VOA) allow for a little more spontaneity;
generally, you fill out the forms and
are issued the visa at your point of
entry. Fees generally apply, and range
from nominal ($10 in the Dominican
Republic) to significant ($100 in Tanzania
and Bangladesh). Again, there can
be variation based on the applicant’s
nationality.
5. SINGLE-ENTRY, MULTIPLEENTRY AND TRANSIT VISAS –
WHICH ONE IS RIGHT?
It all depends on whether you want to
stay put, bop around a region or just
pass through. Say you’re going to China.
If your plan is 10 days in Beijing with
a side trip to Shanghai, you only need
a single entry. If you want to go to the
country’s southwestern provinces and
maybe take a jaunt to Hanoi, Vietnam,
before heading back into China, you’ll
need multiple entries because you’re
entering the country twice. And if you
have a long layover in Guangzhou (or
anywhere else in China), you can take
advantage of the 72-hour transit visa.
Of course, that’s just one country as an
example – requirements and details for
each type of visa vary widely, so read
that consular fine print.
6. LETTERS OF INVITATION
Though it’s relatively rare, some
countries require a letter of invitation
(LOI) in order to issue a visa. That
means that you, as the traveler, need
an official letter from a citizen of the
country inviting you to stay. Russia is
one example where an invitation (in
this particular case, called a tourist
voucher and confirmation) is necessary.
It’s generally a good idea to call in
some professional help in this case;
visa agencies and travel agents should
know the ropes and be able to provide
assistance.

POST UPTOWN DALLAS / DECEMBER 2013
The second in a trilogy of films adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit,
by J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug continues the adventure of the
title character Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) as he journeys with the Wizard Gandalf (Ian
McKellan) and thirteen Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) on an epic
quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor. © WB
AMERICAN HUSTLE
A fictional film set in the alluring world of
one of the most stunning scandals to rock
our nation, American Hustle tells the story of
brilliant con man Irving Rosenfeld (Christian
Bale), who along with his equally cunning
and seductive British partner Sydney Prosser
(Amy Adams) is forced to work for a wild
FBI agent Richie DiMaso (Bradley Cooper).
DiMaso pushes them into a world of Jersey
powerbrokers and mafia that’s as dangerous
as it is enchanting. Jeremy Renner is Carmine Polito, the passionate, volatile, New Jersey
political operator caught between the con-artists and feds. Irving’s unpredictable wife
Rosalyn (Jennifer Lawrence) could be the one to pull the thread that brings the entire world
crashing down. Like David O. Russell’s previous films, American Hustle defies genre, hinging
on raw emotion, and life and death stakes. © Sony
