A Great Loss
e were all shocked and saddened by the
passing of George Sexton on July 29, 2008.
George and Rosann Sexton have been members of RRCUS for over 30 years. Many of the dogs they
bred under their Rifrug kennel name have contributed to
the lines we see today. George and Rosann have both been
tireless supporters of RRCUS throughout their membership serving in many capacities. George has served as our
AKC delegate for the past 17 years. In that role, he championed the issues that were important to our breed and the
Ridgeback community. He was strongly committed to the
role and his contributions have been acknowledged by the
AKC Delegate community. Just recently he was chairing
the committee, along with Denise Flaim, addressing the
controversial issue of AKC group realignment.
I had the pleasure of serving on the Board with
George and he has been a great support and advisor to the
magazine. Our heartfelt condolences go to Rosann and the
family as they go through this difficult time.
The RRCUS BOD and National Show Committee
have dedicated the 2008 Gettysburg event to George’s
memory. So here at “The Ridgeback” we think it appropriate to follow suit and will be memorializing George in
the National issue. If you have any memories, stories or
photos you would like to share for this memorial, please
send to me or deliver to me in Gettysburg. Photos will be
promptly returned.
MBIS MBISS Ch. Spring Valley’s Great Gatsby
ROM is not just the Number One Rhodesian Ridgeback sire for
2007. With a total of 19 champions finished last year, and 56
total, Gatsby was the top sire among all Hound breeds. Gatsby
(the only Ridgeback in history to have won Best of Breed at a
RRCUS National Specialty Show, Westminster KC, and
the AKC/Eukanubashow) is also one of the top Ridgeback sires
of all time.
To date, Gatsby has sired 56 AKC conformation
champions, including two Dual Champions. In addition, he is the
sire of at least 25 Ridgebacks which have achieved coursing
titles (including one Field Champion), one with an Agility title,
and one with a Tracking title. He also has more than 20 foreign
champions to his credit, in Australia, South America
and Europe.
Three Gatsby sons – Ch. ReddHill Leyland Cypress, Ch.
PupukeaRidge Ikaikao Spring Valley, and Ch. Of Afrikka
Spring Valley Dorian Gray, JC – have won both all-breed Bests
in Show and Regional Specialty Bests. Ikaika was the
Number One Rhodesian Ridgeback (all systems) for 2007; he is

AKC Group Realignment
As mentioned, one of the key issues facing our breed at
the moment is the AKC’s proposal to realign some of the
groups in conformation competition. George Sexton and
co-chair Denise Flaim, used an online survey tool to ask
the membership for its opinion on essentially two important questions.
First, is the Ridgeback a hound? The second was the
question of sighthound or scenthound. Even though the
question about the RR as a hound was asked, the realignment committee had been assured that moving the breed
to a “non-hound” group was not being considered.
On August 11, 2008, Denise shared the results of the
poll. Over 40% of the membership voted (358 members).
The overwhelming majority agreed that the RR is a hound
(99.2%) and a sighthound (90.7%). The committee then

Grey is Number Two in all-breed points through July 2008, and
is the Number 11 Hound. Another Gatsby son, Ch.
Paumanok’s Helios of Spring Valley, is also ranked among the
Top Twenty Ridgebacks.

litters with Gatsby: Ch. Deer Ridge Dream Weaver, ROM, and
Ch. Rolling’s Reminiscence ROM; each produced six champions
when bred to him.
At ten years of age, Gatsby is still going strong. He retired
from the ring at Westminster 2004 after taking a Group 2,
and since then has spent his time as our devoted (and devilish)
pet. He is standing at stud to approved bitches, and we
have frozen semen available.

Bucky is in good company. The winners
the two previous years, Pee-Dee and

Mom Tempest is proud of Bucky’s accomplishments, all before he is even 2 years old.

The Rhodesian Ridgeback World
Congress recently convened in
Ireland. A nice contigent of RRCUS
members were present and we are
happy to be able to provide some
of their thoughts and memories
of this quadrennial event. Look
for the stories, travelogues and
overviews of the presentations and
