A ‘WORLD’ OF GOOD
Nearly 40 of you came to town last April and took Hill stage
by storm, and in doing so inspired the 110 of us “young”
guys of the current Club. I was struck by many things while
listening to the performance of the 1967 World Tour Reunion
Glee Club in Hill Auditorium this past April:
1. These guys are good.
It would have been absolutely appropriate for the group’s
performance to be merely respectable: How good can a
group sound after just a few rehearsals after potentially forty
years of not singing? We’d have forgiven the group if they
had chosen to focus on the symbolism and social aspects
of the reunion, and to let the music serve as a pleasant
afterthought. Instead we heard well-supported, in-tune, and
energetic renditions of Handel’s Hallelujah, Amen (no small
ditty, that), Duey’s arrangement of Ain’t Got Time to Die and
his magnificent Go Blue. I heard many unsolicited kudos to
the group from current Clubbers, and I echo them: This was
an excellent performance.
2. Once a student, always a student.
How differently the World Tour Clubbers and the graduatingsenior Clubbers must have viewed this single concert. The
Tour singers were enjoying a triumphant return, while the
graduating singers were experiencing an emotional farewell.
I hope this event served as a reminder to the current Club that
one’s final Hill concert may be seen as a “commencement”
of the realm of lifelong singing. We have been blessed twice
in the past two years with performances by groups of Club
alumni; shared rehearsals and concerts with the Ypsilantibased Measure for Measure, and the World Tour performance.
In both cases the younger men had the opportunity to witness
the power that singing still held for men more than twice
their age.
3. Choral music has gone global.
The 1980’s and 1990’s ushered in an explosion of published
music from non-Western cultures. This music has permeated
all types of choirs, from professional ensembles to elementary
school choirs. The World Tour Club provided us with a
wonderful occasion to celebrate this musical globalism, and
to showcase selections from Austria, Italy, England, Korea,
India, and the United States. I believe this leads to greater
appreciation of the cultural richness and diversity we enjoy
in this country.

Another beautiful fall day is upon us, let us hope the weather
inspires the football team to continue to correct its losing
ways and make all things right in old Ann Arbor Town. Hello
to all of you as I begin my 11th year as the Michigan Men’s
Glee Club advisor. This will be a busy year for the Club as
they ready themselves for an exciting concert tour of Spain
in May and potentially 2 additional concert possibilities
outside of Ann Arbor. I welcome five new members to the
Executive Committee and 25 new singers selected during
the fall audition process. As I look forward with anticipation
to the year ahead I look back at the winter semester filled
with song and MGC alumni commitment. The Spring
Concert was very special as we welcomed back to the stage
35 members of the 1967 World Tour group celebrating
the 40th anniversary and also premiered a new Michigan
song, Michigan Remember. Paul Rardin continued his
outstanding work with the Club while composing the music
to the winning lyrics in the Michigan song competition. The
Club is very fortunate to have Paul as their leader! I want
to say special thanks to Steve Ramsey, Jamie Turner, and
Brian Grant for their continuing efforts in moving the Club
along on the path toward the 150th Anniversary. Steve has
provided outstanding leadership and Jamie & Brian’s work
on the historical DVD project by conducting interviews
during the spring concert period jump started this important
project.
A big THANK YOU goes out to all of you for a wonderful
year of financial support to the Club!!!!! Buoyed by
special gifts from members of the 67 World Tour Group
and responses to special solicitation requests for the Philip
Duey and James Shortt scholarship endowments the Club
received the highest level of annual giving in its history. In
these economic times financial support of this kind by our
alumni and friends shows your confidence in the Club and
your commitment to maintaining the Tradition and Musical
Excellence the Club represents.
I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at the
fall concert November 17th. Please e-mail me at carls@
umich.edu or contact me by phone 734-764-1448 if you
have questions or concerns about the club. I remind you
that for up-to-date information please go to the Club’s web
site (www.ummgc.org). Have a wonderful fall and holiday
season. GO BLUE !!

The State of the Glee Club
by Michael Cromwell
President
Alumni and friends of the Men’s Glee Cllub, I am honored to serve as President
of the greates college chorus in the world for its 148th year. This year I am
excited to represent not only its 100+ current clubbers, but also its name, history,
and the University on behalf of the many fans who will see us perform this year.
What a spectacular and exhilarating responsibility.
This year will take the club across the campus, the country, and the Atlantic.
Local concerts in Ann Arbor and beyond will accompany trips to Los Angeles
and Washington DC topped off with an international tour to Spain. For our new
guys, it’s a great year to have joined Glee Club, and for seniors like me, this will
be a great year to complete a Glee Club tenure.
With a deceptively short two years until the 150th Anniversary, the 150th planning
team, captained by Steve Ramsey, is setting the stage for a fantastic reunion year.
The executive committee, in addition to running the club and helping to plan
the 150th, has targeted three areas for potential improvement within the Club:
diversity, service, and social outreach. For diversity, we have considered not
only the make-up of the group, but also the musical and cultural diversity of the
Club experience. Sample ideas for improvement include a shared rehearsal with
the Michigan Gospel Chorale and increased interaction with The University of
Michigan Women’s Glee Club.
The executive committee also hopes to make the Glee Club a leading group at
the University by augmenting the Club’s outreach efforts on campus, throughout
the Ann Arbor area, and beyond. Our service outreach may take the form
of performances at hospitals and nursing homes, or maybe in a few years a
mentorship program with a local underprivileged high school. Socially we are
looking to form more connections with other campus groups such as choirs or
charities to increase and improve our on-campus presence.

The Birth of “One Voice”…The Concert
Approximately four years ago, I received a phone call from
the local Michigan Alumni Association informing me that the
Michigan Men’s Glee Club was coming to Los Angeles and
if I would please provide a place for several of the members
to sleep for two nights. My answer was an enthusiastic
“yes”. Then, the following day, another important phone call
came, this time asking if I could host the entire Glee Club for
lunch. I was delighted to have them all come to my home in
Pacific Palisades. Of course this presented the opportunity
to ask the men if they would sing a few songs for us and they
happily obliged. My wife, son and I will never forget being
surrounded by the Club members who sang, just for us, some
of our favorite Michigan songs: “Laudes Atque Carmina”,
“Varsity”, and “Hail to the Victors”. Any live performance
by this world-class ensemble puts electronic reproduction to
shame. It was truly, a wonderous experience that we will
always cherish.
About three years later, the identical scenario played out
again, only this time it was the Michigan Women’s Glee Club
coming to LA. My U.M. alumna daughter, Kerry, heard this
luncheon performance with us and had her Michigan spirit
rekindled, prompting a trip back to Ann Arbor for a father/
daughter weekend including attendance at a game in the Big
House.
Last year, while reflecting on these two magical musical
experiences, I realized what a thrill it would be to bring
Michigan music to a facility that is purported to have the
most amazing acoustics available in the world, the Disney
Concert Hall here in Los Angeles. As I had been a member
of the world champion Masters of Harmony men’s chorus,
why not champion a joint concert with the UMMGC coupled
with the perfect setting for the performance? Two phone
calls later, the event we now call “One Voice” was born and
has grown quickly, practically by itself.
How often does something converge in this way like the
proverbial ‘perfect storm’? Here we have two superb
choruses, with 10 international championships between
them, together in concert at one of the finest acoustical
venues on earth. We trust that One Voice will be a
‘once-in-a-lifetime’ experience.
Andrew Wollner practicing the recently revived art of
statue mimic.
The power of this upcoming concert became clear when,
some months ago, I received a CD containing what will
be the musical finale of this superb event. My wife and I
sat together and played the CD and I realized, as I saw the
emotions on her face, what an incredible experience the
audience will have in Los Angeles on June 7, 2008, at the
Walt Disney Concert Hall!

Alumni Relations
by Nils Klykken
Alumni Relations Manager
Greetings alumni, donors, and patrons: I am very excited to
begin my third term as the Alumni Relations Manager for
the Club after what proved to be a very exciting first year
in the position. Last year we received the largest amount of
donations by the largest group of donors we have ever seen.
Our total number of gifts was $83,539.19. This money
can be attributed to Phone-A-Thon (our highest grossing
year), the 1967 World Tour Group donation and our Duey
Endowment Scholarship donations. These numbers and the
general financial backing of Club are only possible because
of all of you.
Another September and another school year are upon us.
Celebrating our 148th year we look to the many exciting
promises ahead. The 150th committee will be meeting and
solidifying plans on the course of our upcoming celebrations,
and opportunities will begin to crop up for Clubbers and
Alumni alike. I look forward to working with our 150th
coordinators, Scott Roffman and Phil Schettenhelm, Steve
Ramsey, and all the other Clubbers and Alumni who can ring
in this milestone event with the pomp and circumstance it is
due.
Finally, I would like to make a Public Service Announcement
regarding UMMGC eNews Updates. For those alumni,
donors, and patrons who are not on our monthly electronic
news as a supplement to Laudes and would like to be added
to it, please compose an email to [email protected]
with the subject line “Add to eNews” and you will be added
to our monthly list. In this way, I hope to contact a greater
number of you more frequently with updates concerning
Club. As I have stated in past issues of Laudes, I am honored
5
to be your contact and connection to the Club: I look forward
strengthening that connection in our 148th year.

2007 Midwest
Tour Summary
by Chris Lee
Laudes Editor
This past summer the Glee Club embarked on a sweeping tour
of the Midwest covering venues in Marquette, MI; Marathon,
WI; Northfield, MN; Chicago, IL; Iowa City, IA; Memphis,
TN and Louisville, KY. If nothing else, this tour taught us
two things: 1: the Midwest is very BIG and 2: the Midwest
is full of well-kept secrets. I think those who were expecting
incredibly boring landscapes and cultureless cities were pleasantly surprised by the beautiful, natural surroundings of the
Upper Peninsula of Michigan, the cultural offerings of Chicago, Iowa City, Northfield, and Memphis, and varied, if not
occasionally unusual attractions in Marathon City, and Louisville. And certainly those that didn’t go out and find things
to do in those cities, fashioned their own good times and built
camaraderie.
Tour began in the Upper Peninsula city of Marquette where
Clubbers discovered natural tranquility and an enthusiastic
community reception unparalleled at any other location. Nature trails, waterfalls and high rocky hills provided a perfect

th
Anniversary
Update
by Jamie Turner,
Glee Club ‘75-’78
Initial work on a 150th anniversary DVD documentary
on the Glee Club has been very successful, with video
interviews with more than a dozen current and former
clubbers, former conductors Willis Patterson and Leonard
Johnson and current director Paul Rardin already in “the can.”
But there’s a lot more to be done before the project is
completed and ready for distribution in early 2010: research,
interviews, more research, more interviews… you get the idea.
We also desperately need the help of Club alumni who have
old home movies, photographs or simply great memories to
share. Any contribution can only help make this project a
great addition to (and reflection of) the Club’s rich history.
This past month, Brian Grant located two of the oldest
Clubbers --- Ken Parker (‘33) and Ken Heininger (‘37-
backdrop for our first concert on tour.
In Marathon City, Wisconsin, clubbers took their antics to
bowling alleys, indoor water parks and of course, the local
high school. In contrast, our subsequent stop in Northfield,
Minnesota was met with the sophistication of a small yet vibrant college town and home to one of the finest Collegiate
chorus programs in the world. A day trip into Minneapolis
gave us the chance to tour downtown, shop at the Mall of
America, and attend a Minnesota Twins Game.
Midwesterners will understand that Chicago is our cultural
soul-center. Clubbers were free to take advantage of the high
number of quality activities that the city has to offer. What
Midwesterners may not be aware of, however, is the cultural
vitality of Iowa City. Clubbers discovered first hand that Ann
Arbor does not in fact hold a monopoly on night life; indeed
we’re given quite a run for our money by this densely populated college town.
Memphis gave us a taste of Southern cooking and hospitality
as we were treated to pulled pork, ribs and blues on Beale St.
and home cooking, comfortable homes and city tours by our
incredibly gracious hosts.
See Tour, Page 8
’40), well before the arrival of Dr. Philip Duey. Also,
we were able to get a face-to-face chat with former
director Johnson at his office at the University of Texas.
Both interviews provided some valuable recollections.
But what do YOU have that can help? If you want to contribute
an idea, photograph, home movie or memory, just email me
([email protected]) or Brian ([email protected]).
We all know how important the Glee Club was and is to the
University community and to those of us lucky enough to sing
The Yellow and Blue at the end of every concert. With your
help, we can produce something that makes that pride clear
from coast to coast.

The Goal of Every Clubber...
by Gregory Fear
Historian
The goal of every man in the Glee Club is to go on tour. The
level of dedication seen over the course of a year where the
Glee Club is preparing for a tour overseas is even greater.
This is going to be one of those years. Massive turnouts at
our Record Sings before the football games, more people
than operations knows what to do with “volunteering”
their time at auditions, and clubbers scrambling to help out
Exec members and Junior Managers any way they can. It
is, of course, somewhat a matter of luck to even have the
opportunity to partake in a tour oversees. Many men in club
never have travelled out of the country with the Glee Club,
but those who have over the course of the last fifty years will
attest to what an incredible experience it is. It has been four
years since the Glee Club’s trip to The United Kingdom, and
52 since the Club left these shores for the first time to travel
Western Europe, beginning a tradition of musical excellence
on an international level. We are extremely excited to be
part of this history and looking forward this year to making
some of our own.
The first oversees tour was undertaken by the Glee Club in
1955 under the direction of Dr. Philip Duey, a man who left
his mark on the organization in countless ways. Through
this tradition the Glee Club has performed for royalty,
dignitaries and countless brothers in song from all over the
world. We take great pride in our musical excellence, as it
is one of the three pillars of the Club, but what is musical
excellence if it cannot be shared with others? To see our
accomplishments reflected through the eyes and ears of our
peers on a global scale is of great significance, and we take
pride in the opportunity. The evidence of the lasting imprint
made through experiencing an overseas tour was evident
in the success of the reunion that was held this last spring
commemorating the 1967 World Tour. Getting the chance
to see such a large number of men return to Ann Arbor and
reminisce about their part in the Glee Club’s history instilled
in many of us a strong desire to be a bigger part of that
history ourselves.
In just a couple of years the Glee Club will celebrate an
important milestone. One hundred and fifty years since
its inception, in 1859, the Glee Club has continuously
maintained a level of excellence, always stepping up to the
next challenge and achieving its many goals. In looking at
the significance of this upcoming event and also our tour to
Spain next spring, it has become evident to the Glee Club
Historians that a higher level of knowledge and appreciation
of the Club’s long and illustrious history is necessary on the
part of the current members of the organization. In order
to make the history accessible and interesting and also to
provide the necessary incentive, an optional activity has been
developed that will provide clubbers with an opportunity
to learn UMMGC history, and receive those all-important
points. Formatted as a take-home quiz, the activity includes
questions such as, “What was the year and where was the
destination of the Glee Club’s first overseas tour?” (1955
to Western Europe) and, “What is the ‘legend’ behind our
tradition of snapping as opposed to clapping?” (You can’t
clap and hold a beer!) The activity will be both optional and
mainly directed at the newer members, but will be open to all
who wish to take the time to participate.
The history of this organization is what gives it the level of
praise it has come to expect. We are what continue to make
that history great. Every year comes with new possibilities
for achievement, and there hardly a chance that we are going
to stop achieving now. There is no reason to doubt that this
year will be a great success, culminating in the experience of
singing in some of Spain’s great cathedrals for an audience
made up of many who will only hear us sing once. True to
our history though, it is doubtful that they will ever forget
hearing The University of Michigan Men’s Glee Club lift
our voices in song.
Tour continued...
Our last stop in Louisville after a brief lunch in Nashville
was the perfect culmination of a tour full of surprises. Activities included tours of Mammoth Cave National Park, The
Jim Beam Bourbon Distillery and the Louisville Slugger
museum, an alumni picnic and a delicious final banquet in
downtown Louisville.
I know I can’t speak on behalf of everyone in club, but based
on my readings of initial expectations, I’d have to say that
this tour exceeded everyone’s to the extent that we will, from
now on have a greater appreciation for the part of the country that we call home while we’re here at the University.
