More than 30 years ago, Robert
Handwerger, MD, established a one-man
dermatology practice in Annapolis.
That practice, now known as Anne
Arundel Dermatology, P.A., has grown
to become one of the premier full-service
providers of dermatology services in
the area.
Anne Arundel Dermatology has
approximately 170 employees at 10
locations. These professionals deliver
a wide range of services to patients,
from aesthetic and cosmetic procedures
to treatment of skin cancers and other
diseases. “We have a strong set of values
and a culture we try to live up to every
day,” said Ed Ponatoski, CEO of Anne
Arundel Dermatology. “Every patient
we see could choose to go somewhere
else, and we’re very cognizant of that.
“We work hard for them every day,
and, overall, our results have been very
positive — but we don’t rest on past
successes. We recognize the impact
of each of our staff members in the
success of our practice, and we know
that all of our clinicians and staff
members have to provide the best care
possible for our patients. We know
that if we put their needs first, good
things will follow.”
As part of providing the best care
possible, Anne Arundel Dermatology
maintains
dedicated
pathology
facilities, where biopsy specimens are
sent for evaluation and diagnosis.
These facilities are located in St.
John Properties’ Quarterfield Center
in Glen Burnie. “We’ve been in that
location since 2009, and we process a

significant volume of specimens there,”
Ponatoski said. “We also have our
emergency generator and all of our IT
infrastructure at that site. It’s been a
very good location for us.”
As Anne Arundel Dermatology continues
its growth trend, Ponatoski counts his
company’s relationship with St. John
Properties as a valuable asset. “Our
experience with them has been extremely
positive,” he noted. “St. John Properties
is really easy for us to work with and
flexible in meeting our needs. St. John
Properties has played a significant role
in our success, and we anticipate the
good relationship we have with them to
continue as we move forward.”

LOCATION:
Dolfield Business Park
Owings Mills, MD
Phone: 800.231.1499; 410.594.9403
Website: www.izimed.com
Since 1991 IZI Medical Products, LLC has been helping
physicians diagnose and treat their patients faster and more
accurately by providing top-of-the-line medical devices and
technology for their practices.
Led by CEO Helen Shafer, IZI provides equipment that is crucial
to a number of different medical procedures, including:
• CT scans
• Image-guided surgeries
• Mammmography
• MRIs
• Nuclear medicine
• Radiation therapy
• Urology
• X-rays
“We’re focused on positioning, reference, tracking and comfort
devices,” Shafer explained. “Our mission is to improve patient
care by improving the accuracy of physicians’ procedures and
decreasing procedural time. Our products really help clinical staff
members and patients, which is a win/win.”
IZI has 26 employees and is actively hiring more, Shafer noted.
“We currently have six positions we’re looking to fill, which is
exciting,” she said.
The company has been in its current location — a
20,000-square-foot site in St. John Properties’ Dolfield Business
Park — since July 2010. “We worked with Jerry Wit originally
and found St. John Properties to be easy to work with and very
responsive,” Shafer recalled. “As we were growing out of our old
facility, St. John was the best choice for us. They worked with
us and found us a site that has more than two times the space of
our old location.”
She added that the buildout process for IZI’s new headquarters
was completed quickly and by the date that IZI needed.
Shafer said St. John Properties’ staff worked closely with IZI
to coordinate their needs and requirements for the new space,
resulting in a work environment everyone loves. “We were
stuffed like sardines in our previous location,” she explained.
“Now we have this beautiful new location. Everyone is very
pleased, and it’s a very inviting environment.
“I wouldn’t hesitate to tell others that we’ve had a great
experience with St. John Properties,” Shafer continued. “They’ve
been very receptive, responsive and easy to work with. It was an
easy decision for us to make.”

Community Physicians
LOCATION:

Bowie, MD
Phone: 240.556.1000
Website: www.hopkinsmedicine.org/jhcp
The Johns Hopkins Hospital is known worldwide for its
expertise in health care, with some of the best physicians
practicing within the Johns Hopkins system. But Bowie-area
patients no longer have to travel to Baltimore to benefit
from this expert care, thanks to Johns Hopkins Community
Physicians (JHCP).
JHCP’s Bowie practice, located in St. John Properties’ Melford
business park, is one of more than 30 JHCP practice sites
located throughout Maryland. The JHCP practice in Bowie
provides patients with primary care, family practice and
pediatrics, as well as sports medicine.
Debra Janikowski, regional
operations director for JHCP,
said the practice is unique
because of its quality of
care and its accessibility for
members of the communities
that JHCP serves. “What
also sets us apart is that we
provide care to those in the
Uniformed Services Family Health Plan, which provides medical
insurance to family members of active-duty military members,
military retirees and retirees’ family members,” she added. “We’ve
been providing care to these family members and retirees for more
than 20 years.”
Janikowski noted that JHCP’s motto is “Your Home for
Good Health.” To that end, the practice participates in the
patient-centered medical home (PCMH) model of care, which
emphasizes a team-based approach to health care in which
the patient plays an active role in the process and that care for
the patient’s medical needs is coordinated among health-care
providers. “Several of our sites — soon to be all of our sites —
are certified at the highest level for PCMH,” Janikowski added.
A caring atmosphere, a dedication to excellence, a vast array of
services and a team of some of the best-trained physicians on the
planet make JHCP a powerful ally for Bowie-area residents who
want the best for their families’ health care needs.

Every day, the world’s leading pharmaceutical and biotechnology
companies are working to develop new treatments and therapies
for such disorders of the nervous system as Parkinson’s disease,
Alzheimer’s disease and many others. This work requires the
support of specialists in the field of neuropathology — the study
of diseases of nervous-system tissue. Fortunately, the professionals
at Tox Path Specialists, LLC (TPS) are there to help.
many new therapies, some already in clinical trials, which have
the potential to improve and, in some cases, save human lives.”
When TPS was considering locations in the Frederick area for
its headquarters, it determined St. John Properties’ Riverside
Technology Park to be the best option, due in part to its proximity
to biotechnology research companies and to the U.S. Army Medical
Command’s installation at Fort Detrick. Also, Susan Butt noted, “It
is geographically close to our home and the homes of the majority
of our employees who reside in the Frederick area, it offers the
municipal utilities we require, and the space offered flexibility that
enabled us to build out to our exact specifications at a price we felt
was competitive in the current commercial market.”
TPS was founded in 2007 by Mark T. Butt, DVM, diplomate,
ACVP, who serves as the company’s president, and his wife, Susan
Butt, the company’s director of operations. TPS provides research
firms with the technical expertise to determine if potential new
therapies are safe before they proceed with clinical trials.
Susan Butt said St. John Properties’ staff has always been
committed to meeting TPS’s needs on an aggressive timeline,
building the space out to the company’s exact specifications while
exceeding expectations for service and quality in the process.
“TPS accomplishes this by providing a collection of services and
specialized techniques not available anywhere else in the world
in a single Good Laboratory Practice environment,” Mark Butt
explained. “To date, TPS has assisted with the development of

Veran Medical Technologies, Inc.
LOCATION:
MIE Corporate Center
Golden, CO
Phone: 314.659.8500
Website: www.veranmedical.com
In the rapidly changing medical field, keeping abreast of the latest
diagnostic and treatment advances has become the new standard
for progressive patient care. Founded in 2005, Veran Medical
Technologies, Inc., provides products that allow physicians
to perform minimally invasive procedures to detect and treat
cancer, with a particular emphasis on lung diseases.
“Our whole company is founded on the premise of expanding
traditional image-guided navigation into soft-tissue applications.”
Troy Holsing, CTO/vice president of product development,
explained. “Our premier product is a complete system for
endobronchial navigation.”
Veran Medical Technologies prides itself on its signature
product, the SPiN Drive® EM navigation system with Always-On
Tip Tracked™ Instruments. Featuring tips affixed with
electromagnetic sensors, this line of disposable brushes, needles
and forceps allows physicians to retrieve pulmonary samples
safely and accurately by combining direct visualization with the
company’s patented Always-On navigation.
“Veran’s mission is to extend life through earlier diagnosis and the
delivery of minimally invasive therapies for interventional oncology
procedures with unique navigation technologies,” Holsing said.
The SPiN Drive electromagnetic navigation platform works in
concert with the Always-On Tip Tracked technology to enable
physicians to biopsy single nodules in the lung, allowing speedy
diagnosis. “Our products are very new to the market, and we’re
all about becoming the standard of care in these areas,” Holsing
added. “We’re really trying to help people.”
In 2008, the company relocated its headquarters from Nashville,
Tennessee, to St. Louis, Missouri. In 2011, they opened a satellite
office in MIE Corporate Center in Golden, Colorado. The
office’s location is ideal for the fledgling business. “We’re at the
intersection of C-470 and I-70, so it provides us with a central
location on the western side of Denver,” Holsing said.
He added that St. John Properties has been an excellent landlord.
“The service when we first moved in was really, really good, and
I also thought their interior-design services were great.”

White Marsh Family Dentistry
LOCATION:
Baltimore Crossroads @95
Baltimore, MD
Phone: 410.931.7133
Website: www.whitemarshdental.com
Whether you’re in a job interview, a
client meeting, or simply enjoying the
company of friends and family members,
having a healthy smile is important.
Numerous patients throughout the
Baltimore area entrust their smiles to
the dentists and staff members of White
Marsh Family Dentistry.
White Marsh Family Dentistry was
founded in the mid-1980s and has been
under its current ownership since 1989,
when John Farrugia, DDS, and Steven
Litwin, DDS, assumed responsibility for
the practice. The two doctors and 11
staff members provide a wide range
of dental care, including veneers,
whitening, orthodontics, implants,
cleanings and checkups, as well as
treatments for temporomandibular joint
(TMJ) disorders and migraines.
White Marsh Family Dentistry has
benefited from a philosophy of embracing
the latest technology, Farrugia noted.
“The office has been paperless for many
years, and we were one of the first to go
digital,” he said.
“We use digital radiograph
technology throughout the office.
This means immediately available
images for us and our patients, up to
90 percent less radiation exposure to
our patients, and no chemicals that
have to be scrubbed before being
returned to the environment.”
In 2008, Farrugia and Litwin began
the process of selecting a new location
for White Marsh Family Dentistry.
Farrugia said St. John Properties’
Baltimore Crossroads @95 location
was the best choice for their practice.
“It offered visibility, ease of access,
proximity to major roads and is
one of the best-maintained and
TENANT DIGEST
landscaped properties we have ever
seen,” he stated.
After signing the lease in September 2009,
White Marsh Family Dentistry saw its
first patients in its new location on April
6, 2010 — a notable accomplishment for
a dental suite, and one Farrugia said was
only possible because of the attention St.
John Properties has given to the practice.
“Our experience with St. John Properties
has been favorable from the beginning,”
he noted. “Although my questions for
the St. John management team have
been few and far between, each time I
have been received as if I were their only
tenant. It is great to be heard.”
