Winter 2015
From a Volunteer’s Perspective by Barry Storer
W
hat do you do when you find yourself around
these parts with some unfilled time and a
love of outdoor exercise, preferably with like-minded
companions?
Well, you could round up some friends and spend
a few hours hiking or biking the many miles of
trails that the Chelan-Douglas Land Trust (CDLT)
manages, just minutes from any part of town…
OR…you could join a CDLT volunteer work party
and help build and maintain those same trails,
getting good outdoor exercise with a group of likeminded companions!
My first volunteer work party was at Saddle Rock in
the Fall of 2013. Hanne Beener, CDLT trails and
stewardship coordinator, handed out tools and work
gloves and explained the task for the day: breaking
up the hard-packed dirt on some of the undesirable
“social trails” that were candidates for restoration,
so that they could be reseeded with native grasses
later in the fall when the ground was moister. This
was hard work – some of the dirt was almost as hard
as concrete! But with perseverance and patience,

each person doing their part, the pick-mattocks and
Macleod tools did their jobs. Possibly, some of us
were a little sore the next day…
Undeterred, I have joined a dozen or more work
parties since then, building and maintaining trails
throughout the CDLT trail network, including Castle
Rock, Sage Hills, and Horse Lake. For me, building
new trail by hand is perhaps the most enjoyable.
This takes a lot of teamwork – each person or group
of people adding a little more to the process. The
first few in the work crew break up the ground and
remove brush if necessary, the next few establish the
basic tread profile, and the final group smoothes the
trail surface and spreads the excavated soil.
. . . If you are working at the head of
the line, the most amazing thing at
the end of the day is to walk back to
the starting point – where a new trail
has appeared as if by magic!

Our
bond
with
nature
Bob Bugert
Executive Director
“What I see
in Nature is
a magnificent
structure that we can
comprehend only
very imperfectly,
and that must fill a
thinking person with
a feeling of humility.
This is a genuinely
religious feeling that
has nothing to do
with mysticism.”
–Albert Einstein
O
n one of these long winter nights, I pulled myself
from the comfort of my home woodstove to
climb a ridgeline which I just knew was above the valley
fog. I was awestruck on that clear moonless night to see
the Milky Way strewn with stars as thick as sand on a
beach. I reveled in the beauty of Nature and the night
sky, and wondered at their mystery and power.
My relationship with the natural world is my own, but
it could be very much like yours. That I do not know.
…what I do know is that
there are immeasurable ways
we see this overwhelming
power of Nature.
Under the leadership of Board Member Steve Milner, we have
been exploring the diversity of our membership’s perception
of this land we call home, and our intrinsic and extrinsic
connection with our natural world. Our Cosmos. Our Gaia.
Those of you who attended our Annual Dinner last fall
participated in a facilitated discussion about our bond with
Nature, using notable quotes from prominent conservationists,
from Aldo Leopold to Gifford Pinchot. As to be expected,
Land Trust members are diverse and relate to our natural world
in many ways.
Many find a spiritual side to Nature, an emotional elicitation
that is part of what it means to be human. Some feel wonder
and reverence when beholding a sunset or grasping a glimpse of
an owl; others find joy when working the land and sensing that
satisfaction of stewardship. Some enjoy Nature best alone; others
love to share their natural world with friends. It is all good, all
correct, all part of the natural world of which we are part.
We are witnessing a change in our region. Conservation
has become one of the keystones of our community. The
commitment to conservation is embraced by a broad spectrum
of people. As in Nature, our diversity strengthens us.
Thank you for your generosity and commitment to our work
to enhance our livable community in this beautiful corner
of the world.

Leaving a Legacy at
Tall Timber Ranch
T
hirty-five years ago, a young couple fell in love
with Tall Timber Ranch, a Christian camp
nestled at the confluence of the Napeequa and
White Rivers and surrounded by lush meadows,
massive cedars and towering peaks. Becky and Stan
Fishburn retired this month as directors of the camp
– but not before they and the board made sure that
the land along the rivers would always be preserved
in their pristine form for generations to come.
Tall Timber and the Chelan-Douglas Land Trust
recently completed the second phase of a project
that protects over two miles of riverfront and crucial
salmon habitat from future development.
Becky Fishburn says that protecting the future
of the camp gives her comfort and a sense of
accomplishment and she is thankful that the camp
will continue to be able to inspire people to love and
steward the land. “It provides Tall Timber Ranch
a financial settlement that will help us accomplish
our goals, while allowing us to keep the land in our
ownership … it is a legacy of security for the camp
as a camp, for the future.”
Ray Birks, a Wenatchee School District employee,
says that holding Foothills Middle School’s 6th
Grade Camp at Tall Timber for the last 15 years has
been a special experience for many students because
it’s their first time out in the woods and away from
the city. “Having the rivers nearby is a major benefit
for students as it gives them the opportunity to study
the salmon habitat and learn why protecting natural
places is important.”
The Chelan-Douglas Land Trust has enjoyed
working with Tall Timber Ranch throughout this
process, and is grateful to be a part of preserving this
beautiful place forever.
Tall Timber has been introducing people –
especially kids – to nature since the 1960s.

not open to the public.
T
hanks to the vision and
generosity of a local family, over
one square mile of open space and
wildlife habitat above Sunnyslope is
now permanently protected for mule
deer and other wildlife.
We appreciate the spectacular views of the open foothills
and mountains surrounding Wenatchee but as the
population of the valley continues to grow, more of
these wild lands are being converted to other uses. A few
exceptional landowners however have a different vision
for their land and take extraordinary actions to protect
our natural areas.
Without the permanent land
protection agreement, development
could occur on the property
making it and the adjoining
public land much less valuable for
wildlife. While some animals become habituated to people
and use our backyards, parks, and pastures (think urban
deer), most animals including migratory mule deer stay
away from people, pets, and traffic. On Burch Mountain
the effect of this displacement could push deer and other
wildlife back another half mile and effectively reduce the
habitat value on hundreds of additional acres.
In December the Nelson family donated a conservation
easement to the Land Trust on 750 acres of wildlife
habitat on the lower slopes of Burch Mountain. This
remarkable gift permanently protects this private land
Now, as you drive north out of Wenatchee and look
toward the grass and sage covered hills, remember that a
big chunk of this stunning view is protected forever by this
remarkable donation from a conservation-minded family.
From a Volunteer’s
Perspective
the less strenuous work might involve putting up signs,
removing noxious plants, trail maintenance, taking
photos, or making lunches for the party. Whatever
the work, you will meet some great people, and can
take satisfaction in contributing to the mission of the
CDLT, whether you are a member or not. The CDLT
is an incredible organization, and I am pleased to play
even a small role in all that it has accomplished and
will continue to accomplish for our community. I plan
to be back on the trail this year.
(continued from p. 1)
I should note that the oxymoron “work party” is
right on target. There’s a lot of work, but there’s also
a lot of camaraderie and conversation among the
group – usually a combination of some “regulars” and
newcomers. The pace is unhurried, and there are breaks
whenever needed for water, snacks, or even lunches on
some of the longer outings (all supplied by the CDLT).
You also get to stop to admire the view, identify
flowers or birds or bugs, and tell stories: “…we were
building the new trail at Castle Rock and I uncovered a
rattlesnake in its burrow” (that’s a true story of mine I
enjoy sharing). Did I mention there are snacks?

T
he Land Trust is pleased to announce the Upper
Wenatchee Community Lands Plan (UWCLP),
a major visioning project for the Upper Wenatchee
River community. Over the next 16 months we will
work with The Trust for Public Land and Chelan
County to gather input from citizens, community
leaders and landowners to develop a shared vision and
priorities to guide future ownership and management
decisions, primarily of large-scale forested land but also
other conservation and recreation lands. This effort is
modeled after two similar highly successful initiatives to
gather community values and develop a landscape level
plan – the Wenatchee Foothills Community Strategy
and the Stemilt-Squilchuck Community Vision. A shared
vision for
38,000 acres
...a major visioning project for
the Upper Wenatchee River
community.
The catalyst for this effort is the potential
transition of about 38,000 acres of
forested land recently sold by Longview
Fibre to Weyerhaeuser. Much of the
Weyerhaeuser land is adjacent to U.S.
Forest Service lands and may be for sale
in the not too distant future. The way that this forested
checkerboard is managed will affect many public
priorities, including an economy supported by local
jobs and businesses, vibrant recreation opportunities,
thriving populations of fish and wildlife, and reduced
threat of catastrophic wildfire. We want to take a
proactive approach to collecting the community’s
values for these lands and creating a vision that will
guide future land uses within the watershed.

These lands are clustered in three areas: Peshastin
Creek/Blewett Pass, the Chumstick Valley, and Nason/
Coulter Creek. There will be a major public meeting in
each of these areas, a survey for community members
to provide input in writing or online, and outreach to
existing community groups in each area. Values such as
wildlife, recreation, water resources, working lands, fire
hazard, and development potential will be mapped for
each area. Members of a diverse Steering Committee
will provide input at several points in the process. In
the end, we will have a vision and an implementation
plan to make it happen. We will keep you updated,
and you can watch for dates and documents on the
