The overwhelming turnout of members
and guests at the recent OCC’s 3 rd edition
of May Fest 2016 at Vanda Terrace was
very encouraging. Certainly the promise of
“Your All-time Favourite Hawker Food” was
a great draw and true to promise, it was a
night of local food galore topped with nonstop fun activities and entertainment.

much sportsmanship pushing boundaries
and exceeding their personal expectations.
This run will be a good preparation for
those participating in the OCC 3Ten Run
this coming September.

energy efficiency and derive substantial
cost savings.
You will also be delighted to know that
we now have new floats, life buoys and
squat racks at the Recreation Club House.
Over at the Driving Range, you might have
noticed the new net targets and distance
markers to help golfers hone their swing
skill through better focus on the targets.
Let’s now turn our attention to upcoming
events. Starting with the treats for our
golfers, there is the National Day Golf in
conjunction with our nation’s 51 st year of
independence as well as the annual OCC
Club President’s Cup. Additionally, we
have introduced the Novelty Thursday
Night Special at the range – golfers simply
need to top up their range cards with $20
on Thursdays between 7 pm to 9 pm to be
eligible to take part in our Novelty Night
Games 2016.
On the social side, we are pleased to report
that tickets to the August Ball 2016 were
sold out within the first few weeks of ticket
sales - thank you for your overwhelming
support.
Also,
the
inaugural
OCC
Blueseventy Urban Aquathlon is for those
who love a combination of swimming and
running challenge – double the challenge,
double the excitement, so watch for details!
To celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival, we
will be having a series of programmes
together with the 17th series of Super Sprint
Series for your support and participation.
As Ramadan is around the corner, I would
like to wish all our Muslim members, friends
and colleagues Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri!
We look forward to your support in all the
upcoming events and see you in the Club!

The Labour Movement’s May Day
Founded in 1980 in Canada, Music
for Young Children (MYC) has been among
the world’s leading music-learning systems.
It is an educational program designed to
teach music to children aged 2 to 12 and
lead them directly to a minimum of ABRSM
Grade 2 practical & Grade 3 theory level
without further one to one piano lessons. It
is the only child-centered programme that
integrates keyboard, singing, ear training,
sight reading, creative movement, rhythm,
music theory and music composition. For
more information, visit their website at
www.mycsingapore.com.sg.
MYC will be located at Social Clubhouse,
Level 2.

Dinner at Orchid Country Club was attended
by some 1,600 guests comprising unionists,
senior government officials and management
partners on 29 April 2016.
The annual dinner saw over 90 outstanding
individuals and tripartite partners receiving
the prestigious May Day awards in recognition
of their significant contributions to the labour
Movement.
The awardees have demonstrated their support
in promoting harmonious labour-management
and tripartite relations, improving the lives of
workers through productivity boosts, skills
upgrading, employment opportunity for mature
workers and enrichment of workers’ welfare.
Delivering her opening address at the May Day
Dinner, NTUC President Mary Liew touched on
tripartism and its impending role. In alignment
to the May Day’s theme of “Care, Fair, Grow”,
she shared that this year’s Budget provides
a strong foundation for everyone to work
together to transform the economy through
enterprise and innovation, while ensuring that
the society is not left behind. The Labour
Movement Family will strive to enhance
workers’ employability, provide workers with
higher income growth and better welfare.

11th Asian Club Managers’ Conference
(Singapore) 2016
“Future Proof Your Club” was the overarching theme of this year’s conference. This
event aimed to provide a cohesive platform for general managers and senior club management
from around the region to network and address challenges for sustainable growth. Organised by
the Club Managers’ Association of Singapore (CMAS) in collaboration with the Asian Golf Industry
Federation (AGIF) and the China Chapter of the Club Managers Association of America (CMAA),
the event was held from 10 to 12 April 2016 at the Grand Ballroom of OCC. Over 160 delegates
participated in the discussions which focused on deploying feasible and innovative solutions to
attract and retain members of diverse needs.
Mr Peter Goh, General Manager of OCC and President of CMAS, said: “This year, we took a bold
step in charting new ground and placing the focus on preparing for the future. While the world is
dynamic and clubs face many challenges, the content of the conference was specially curated to
provide potential solutions for owners and managers alike.”
New Squat Racks
New Golf Nets
As mentioned in the previous issue, new
Squat Racks are now available in the gym to
help alter your training regime for free weight
exercises in a safe environment. We hope this
enhances your workout experience!
During the event, delegates also embarked on a facility tour to National University of Singapore
Society, SAFRA Yishun, Seletar Country Club, Sentosa Golf Club, Singapore Island Country Club
and Singapore Sports Hub to explore new insights and enhance the learning objectives of the
conference.
We are pleased to unveil the new golf
nets at the driving range for training purposes.
The golf nets are placed at distance of 40m &
75m, golfers can practise precision aiming, and
improve their short game.
Golf Tip: Remember that 60% of your golf
game is within 60m.

CLUB BULLETIN
Major Cyclical Asset Replacement
Works for Greater Efficiency
and Better Orchid Experience!
In the March & April Issue of Orchid Smile, we shared some enhancement projects carried
out in OCC in the first quarter of 2016. Here is an update on more upgrading work that has been
completed as we conclude the second quarter of the year.
We are glad to inform that the Club’s Chiller Plant Equipment System has been replaced at a total
cost of $2 million, contributing to an increase in energy efficiency for substantial energy savings.
The two cargo lifts at Social Club House and passenger lift at Orchid Lodge have also been
replaced with new lifts. The current upgrading work for the passenger lift at Social Club House is
targeted to complete in the third quarter of 2016 for improved energy and cost savings. OCC has
invested $425,000 in the replacement of four lifts as part of our ongoing commitment to being
more environmentally friendly.
The existing lights at the Buggy Bay, Driving Range, Recreation and Social Clubhouses have been
replaced with LED lights at a total cost of $104,100. The Club will continue to invest our resources
with more projects underway to bring quality experience to our members.
Dear Members,
As you know, the Club had invested and installed Strike Guard, an early lightning
warning system to enhance the safety of our members, guests, staff and course
maintenance crew from the impending dangers of being outdoors during lightning
storms. This is a part of the Club's safety audit and risk mitigation carried out for its
golfing, social and recreational facilities. The new monitoring system is certainly an
enhancement over the manual handheld system.
Strike Guard employs state-of-the-art technology to address the most demanding
lightning safety and equipment protection applications. The system monitors cloudto-cloud and cloud-to-ground lightning and provides contact-closure signaling at
user-set lightning activity thresholds. Its patented optical signal processing and
proprietary optical-coincidence technology prevent false alarms.
New Cooling Towers
New Passenger Lift at Orchid Lodge
The advantage of Strike Guard is that it automatically monitors and tracks lightning
activities from 32km. Once lightning activity is detected at a pre-set distance, it will
trigger a course closure warning early enough to allow golfers to be cleared from
our golf course including those who are walking, instead of using buggies.
After conducting various trials during the initial period, the Club has settled on
triggering automatic course closure when lightning is detected to be 5km away.
Thereafter, the system continues to track lightning activity while Golfing staff
supplement and closely monitor the system and reopen the course only when it is
safe to do so; and also after an inspection of the course has been made to ensure
that it is in playable condition.
The system is operational between 6:00am to 10:59pm daily.
New Chiller Plant Equipment System
New Cargo Lift at Social Club House
Meanwhile we wish to thank all members for your patience while the trials were
being conducted in the past weeks. We seek your kind understanding as the safety
of all members and guests at the Club is of prime concern.

SGA Centralised Handicapping System (CHS)
Golfing members are to register directly with SGA, and members who do not have an email
are encouraged to obtain one before registration. For members who do not wish to post
scores individually, please register with the golf counter. The club may impose a nominal fee for
assisting in the posting of scores.
On 4 August 2016, SGA will launch the Centralised Handicapping System (CHS)
for its Ordinary and Associate Members. The CHS will provide a modern and unified
platform for golf handicapping, changing the way golfers perform their handicapping
activities and introducing consistency in calculation of golfers’ Handicap Index.
Members of SGA Ordinary and Associate Members must register at the SGA CHS
website at chs.sga.org.sg before they can use CHS. Registration will open on 20 Jun 16 and close
on 25 Jul 2016.
During registration, golfers are required to fill in the data requested and indicate that they give
consent to their data being collected, used and/or disclosed. This may include their name, gender,
golf club(s) of which they are a member, membership number, Handicap Index, scoring records,
dates and places of play.
Golfers who have successfully registered and have had their membership details authenticated
by their home club will be sent an email on 4 Aug 16 to activate their account. They will also be
requested to set their password before they can start using CHS. In addition, golfers will be required
to give their consent again before activation is successful. Once this is done, golfers are free to post
their scores immediately anywhere and anytime.
Access Your Handicap Index and Post Scores Anytime, Anywhere
Golfers will now be able to perform all their handicapping activities via multiple channels, including
web, their iOS or Android devices and their club’s terminals. With such user friendly options to
choose from, posting scores and checking handicaps will be a breeze.

Singleton Fellowship Charity Golf 2016
By Dennis Yong
Singleton Fellowship Charity Golf 2016 returned for another round of celebration on
Sunday, 17 April 2016, making it the third time at OCC. In partnership with Singapore Association
of the Visually Handicap (SAVH), the sole beneficiary of the event for three years. The Singleton
Group and their guests attended the event themed “Fun & Funds”, which brought together likeminded individuals for a day of enjoyment of golf, building bonds of friendship, engaging in planned
activities and fundraising programmes.
Besides the Hole-in-One and Nearest-the-Pin segments, the Singleton Group raised an additional
$2,400 through playing the golf game from Novelty Hole on Dendro #8, Pitch and Putt. Mr Gerald
Yap, Singleton Fellowship member and the prize sponsor for Novelty Hole, was present with his
family to garner support for the fundraiser.
A Special Corner was set up at the Aranda Halfway House for whisky appreciation, sponsored by
Singapore Beverages. All 68 golfers were treated to three different types of Singleton whiskies and
they gave compliments to the drinks. The night included photo taking sessions and representatives
from SAVH presented mementos to the participants.
The event concluded with a prize presentation held at the Emerald Suite with a buffet dinner
along with an auction session of art pieces by members of the SAVH. The art pieces ranged from
paintings by a young local artist; Ms Melisa Yap, to pottery pieces specially made by Singleton
Fellowship member; Ms Cynthia Phua.
All in all, more than $35,000 was raised during the fundraising campaign and the Organising
Committee would like to convey their heartfelt thanks to all participants and sponsors of the event.

May Fest Golf Challenge 2016
Hosted by Orchid Country Club,
the annual May Fest Golf Challenge was
held on 07 May 2016 on the pristine and enviably verdant greens of Dendro and Vanda
golf courses. The golf challenge saw about 122 golfers during tee-off and the game was
declared open at the sound of the siren. Other than a brief suspension, which did not
dampen the spirits of players, in fact, the golfers challenged themselves to complete a full
round of 18 distinct holes with zest and to exceed expectations. After the game, the golfers
then convened to mingle and shared their experiences with other golfers over savoury
treats at Vanda Terrace. We would like to extend our appreciation to all golfers for their
participation and continuous support. See you at the next golf challenge in 2017!

daily operation. This event was a collaboration between OCC and NTUC Club nEbO. The briefing
was conducted at Aranda Lounge where students were introduced to OCC, interest group activities
and events that the Club has to offer. Following the introduction, our OCC colleagues conducted
a guided tour around OCC facilities including the Driving Range, banquet kitchen, Aranda Lounge,
Gymnasium and Olympic pool. Guests understood better of the daily functions and processes
involved within the Club. Through this learning journey, students will gain valuable insights as well
as understanding the significance of the various job scopes within the business units, in order to run
the Country Club smoothly. This visit is especially important for those who are considering a career
in this path; to find out how each individual’s skill set and interest would fit within the organisation.

the first time WSSA Singapore has organised
an international competition, inviting young
participants from seven countries who were
raring to showcase their cup stacking skills.
Sport Stacking, also known as Speed Stacking
or Cup Stacking, aims to test the skills and
speed of participants to stack and unstack cups
in various formations. The WSSA competition
saw participants from Malaysia, Thailand,
Philippines, Taiwan, Indonesia and Australia who
joined our fellow Singaporeans as they strived
in this two-day challenge.
Chan Keng Ian (in blue) from Malaysia and
Molly Hallam (in green/yellow) from Australia
emerged as top winners of the male and female
divisions respectively. Keng Ian created uproar
during the last round as he potentially broke
the world record for his age category, pending
review and official recognition from WSSA (US).

On 07 May, our annual MayFest
event took off once again with great
cheer. As the event was running in
conjunction with Mother’s Day, OCC
seized the opportunity to surprise all
mothers at the festival by presenting
them with a stalk of carnation flower to
personally convey well-wishes. No doubt
that May Fest 2016 ended on a highnote, it was not completed without a
cake-cutting session. Towards evening,
members and guests were enthralled
by the three legendary figures: Bob
Castello, Alfred George and Peter
Dias as they took centre-stage by
serenading the audience with a 3-piece
band performance with evergreen
song selections throughout the dinner.
Alfred George performed his famous
impersonations of iconic figures while
the crowd looked on with excitement
and anticipation. Members and guests
feasted happily to the local food galore
with an endless supply of beers. The
night concluded with a lucky draw where
the top three lucky winners walked away
with a 3D2N stay at Cocotinos Resort
Manado (Indonesia), a 25-inch travel
suitcase and a bottle of Jacob Creek’s
red wine. It was indeed a memorable
night of great respite and enjoyment.
16th Super Sprint Series – Run Challenge
Following the last edition of the Super Sprint Series, the run challenge returned for
the 16th time with a bang and the event was running in conjunction with OCC’s May Fest 2016!
On 07 May, some 74 runners arrived at the golf courses raring to kick-start the Super Sprint
Series event. It all started with a warm up session conducted by Zim from Onyx MMA before
the group adjourned to the starting point for the race routes of 1km, 2.5km and 5km. This event
also served to build up stamina and agility for the upcoming OCC 3TEN Run, which will take
place on 03 September. During the Super Sprint Series, Finishers of each race category were
given a medal, a running tee shirt and food voucher. We would like to say a big thank you to all
participants and we hope to see you in our next big run in September!

OCC Presents the World of Martial Arts
OCC unveiled the World of Martial Arts event at OCC Grand Ballroom on 04 June 2016 was a
resounding success. A total of 30 professional combatants from various countries showcased their
incredible fighting skills and displayed utmost sportsmanship. Prior to the day of the event, a weighin conference was held at OCC Jade Room where the fighters of the Pro Bout came to complete
their weigh-in for the respective categories they were participating in. There were three segments
on the event day, namely, Muay Boran, Amateur Bout and Pro Bout. Among the highlights was a
fierce match between Ncedo Gomba from South Africa and Petch Sitmonchai from Thailand. The
atmosphere was kept at a “high” throughout the Pro Bout segment as a good show was put up for

Eating Healthy
Begins With U
Brown or unpolished rice is often said to be better than
white rice. All rice before the refining process looks exactly
like brown rice. The refining process essentially strips rice
of iron, vitamins, zinc, magnesium and other nutrients.
Brown rice, on the other hand, retains all the wholesome
goodness that our body needs. If you are suffering from
diabetes, trying to lose weight or managing your blood
pressure and cholesterol, brown rice is a good alternative!
Unlike other varieties of rice, Trust Leaf Organic Unpolished
Rice is small and slender with low amylose and is aromatic
and soft when cooked.

Dear Peter
11th ASIAN CLUB MANAGERS' CONFERENCE - 10th to 12th April
2016
On behalf of the Club Managers' Association, Singapore and the Conference
Organising
Committee,
I must thank you and your team at Orchid Country Club for a most pleasant
experience
in hosting the ACMC'16.
As with the previous Conference in 2012, we decided to host it again this year
at
your Club due to the wonderful facilities in the Orchid Lodge for the accommo
dation of
our speakers and delegates, the Banqueting arrangements, the ancilliary areas
for our
Sponsors' display and the array of Sports and Recreation facilities which our
delegates
(both local and overseas) enjoyed.
All these would not have been possible if not for the excellent support from your
staff,
specifically Ms Sheena Ooi, Senior Sales Manager - Resort, Catering
and
Conferences, of whom I had the delightful opportunity to work with and liaise
again, for
this year's Conference. Her cheerful disposition, coupled with her expertise in
the layout
of the Ballroom and venues for our three break-out sessions, her vast menu knowledge
- especially in catering to the special dietary requirements of our delegates, and
the
assistance to, and liaison with, our sponsors and Conference Manager, Ms Chloe
Cai
from Singapore Exhibition Services, has been invaluable to us in having them
onboard
for our next Conference. She has made all the difference in making our Conferenc
ea
success!
I must also mention the following staff who, through their hard work and quality
of
service, have made our Conference, Cocktail and Gala Dinner all the more memorable
:
Mr ArnandanDoraisamy - F&B Operations Manager
Mr Khairul Azman - Asst Banquet Operations Manager
Ms Laurel Lau - Banquet Operations Captain
Mr Mohd Rusydi - Banquet Captain
Mr PremParagawen - Banquet Captain
Ms SalhaBteAdli - Beverage Manager
Mr David Lim - Senior AV Technician
Mr Tyrone Glass - AV Technician
Mr Jouseph Johnson - AV Technician
Mr Jimmy Ang - AV Technician
Once again, my sincere thanks and compliments.
Best regards

Honorary Secretary
I am writing this letter of Appreciation on a personal note for the heartfelt and
dedicated service that Sheena and rest of the team involved in making our event,
GLT Workshop 30 March – 02 Apr 2016, so pleasant and successful.
As I am new to this Organization, Sheena has showed me the ropes of planning
the event and all the logistics needed during these 3.5 days.
She is always so patient in teaching me and even gave up participating in the
golf tournament so she can give full assistance to me!
For the past 3.5 days when I was station at Vanda Terrace on standby, I was
very well taken care of by Mr David Pik, Mr Paul and team.
Paul takes good care of my meals, noticed that I do not eat prawns and
customize my meal for me. Even brought out a small table as my additional work
desk. Rest aunties at Vanda Terrace, will switch on the fan for me and kept
refilling my ice water as the weather was extremely warm.
I feel the warmth of being treated like a family! This has certainly bring a lot of
joy to me while working.
The Banquet team, Azman Banquet Manager is very helpful and prompt to
accord to our last minute requests always. Mimi, Banquet captain,
She is so dedicated to her work and always putting on a sincere smile and
detailed touch to all the meeting set up. As she is on duty on alternate days,
She will advise and remind me for certain details for the next day even though
she is not working that day.
Thank you once again to your team for treating me like part of the family and
rendering such dedicated and warm service to our events always!
