spring/summer 2015 sulivan sweetland NILS MŐNKEMEYER viola VADYM KHOLODENKO piano We are thrilled to announce our signing of Nils Mönkemeyer (UK, Scandinavia ex Fin, Australia). Winner of the International Yuri Bashmet Competition in Moscow (2006) and the Parkhouse Award in London, he is renowned for his artistic brilliance and innovative programming and is energetically engaged with expanding the repertoire; commissioning new works, championing contemporary pieces and unearthing neglected gems. We warmly welcome 2013 Cliburn winner Vadym Kholodenko for worldwide management. DORIC STRING QUARTET Haydn disc is Gramophone Editor’s Choice Adding to a host of recording accolades, the Doric String Quartet’s exquisite double-CD of Haydn Op 20 Quartets has been greeted with enthusiasm in the press: “Thoughtfulness is uppermost. Allied to precision in articulation is a flexibility in the scansion and shaping of phrases, of notes timed through a George Garnier remarkable understanding of rubato, of a range of expressive resilience that gives even the smallest of episodes in a long line their own character without distorting structure or disturbing flow… Hold your breath for the rest” Editor’s Choice Gramophone. The Quartet is featured in two concerts at the Aldeburgh Festival along with performances at the Ryedale, Carinthischer Sommer, Hitzacher, Delft and Zoom! Festivals. Recently returned from their annual North American tour, the Quartet travels to Israel and the Musica Viva Festival in Australia. His recent US recital tour included performances in Chicago and Washington, drawing high praise from the Washington Post: “Jackiw threw himself into the music as if nothing else mattered and turned in the kind of playing you always hope for at a concert but rarely hear. It was an absolutely spectacular performance, run through with urgent and often unsettling beauty.” AVI AVITAL Artist-in-Residence at Zurich Opera, de la Salle’s latest instalment of her Rachmaninov Piano Concerto cycle saw her perform Concerto No 4 under Fabio Luisi, and she completes the series with Concerto No 3 in July. BBC Music Marco Borggreve Magazine recently favoured Brautigam’s interpretations on fortepiano in a comparison of Beethoven cycles: “There’s no point making a list of highlights as there are no weak performances here, just choose a favourite Beethoven Sonata and hear it refreshed, revitalised and illuminated…these performances are far too good to be pigeonholed as ‘for specialists only’”. London audiences have a chance to hear Ronald Brautigam on fortepiano at LSO St Lukes on Thursday 22 March when he performs a programme of Haydn and Beethoven sonatas in the BBC’s “Haydn Plus” series. Adam Walker performs with the Baltimore Symphony Following performances with the Seattle Symphony in January, virtuoso flautist Kaupo Kikkas Adam Walker returns to the US for concerts with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra under Marin Alsop. ROBERT SPANO conducts Danish National Symphony Passionate in his exploration of contemporary music, Robert Spano returns to Europe to conduct the Danish National Symphony in the world premiere of Søren Nils Eichberg Symphony No 3 together with Beethoven Piano Concerto No 1 (Stephen Hough). As Music Director of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Spano is tireless in his quest to broaden audiences and has created Angela Morriss imaginative settings in which to present music, such as the “Theater of a Concert” format involving lighting and stage direction. This setting will be used for the world premiere of Christopher Theofanidis’ ambitious new piece, Creation Oratorio in April. Atlanta season soloists include Midori, Lynn Harrell, Jessica Rivera, Jean-Yves Thibaudet and Bronfman. Spano has devised the 2015 Aspen Music Festival where he is Music Director around “Dreams of Travel”, celebrating musical works enriched by other cultures. His own programmes include contemporary operas by Stephen Stucky and Christopher Theofanidis along with a semi-staged performance of Aida, whilst orchestral repertoire features Mahler Symphony No 6 and Rimsky-Korsakov Scheherazade. MIGUEL HARTHBEDOYA conducts Higdon world premiere at Santa Fe Opera Following his memorable performances at Santa Fe Opera of Golijov’s Ainadamar, Miguel HarthBedoya returns to the house this summer to conduct the world premiere of Jennifer Higdon’s Cold Mountain based on Charles Frazier’s awardwinning novel set during the American Civil War (1, 5, 14, 17, 22 Aug). Bell Soto In his second season as Chief Conductor of the Norwegian Radio Orchestra Harth-Bedoya conducts a Brahms cycle and continues to record more South American repertoire (Naxos). He returns to the Helsinki Philharmonic where he is a regular guest and to the RTVE Orchestra in Madrid closing the season in an all-Beethoven programme with Vadym Kholodenko as soloist. Harth-Bedoya has maintained a unique relationship with the Los Angeles Philharmonic since his first visit in 1998. This was clearly recognised by the LA Times in his recent concert of Prokofiev Cinderella Suite and Chopin Piano Concerto with Emmanual Ax, remarking on their “special chemistry”.
