Clubhouse notes
From the Manager
By Mark Stahlman
Many activities will be coming up during
the month of May, including Mother’s Day
Brunch on May 9th, and the pool and splash pad
opening on May 24th. All of the summer activities
begin: Tennis Leagues, Swim Team, Golf Events
and many other social activities. In the next
four months, members will utilize the Club more
than any other time of the year. Our goal is to
continually improve service to our members.
We always welcome your comments, ideas, and suggestions. With all
of the increased activities, I would like to encourage you to re-visit the
rules and regulations. If you need a new copy, please stop by the office.
On Thursday, May 5th, we will have a Cinco De Mayo Fiesta. There
will be margaritas, drink specials, and a themed buffet. The Cinco de
Mayo Fiesta will be in the dining room with select food stations set up
around the room. Art Bentley will perform as our live entertainment.
Save the date of November 5th for our Member Appreciation Party.
The wine lockers are almost gone! There are just a few wine
lockers that are still available for purchase or rental. Call me at
the Club in order to reserve one of the few remaining wine lockers.
The most effective way to gain new members is through you,
our members. It’s very important for the success of Highland Springs
Country Club that we continue to grow, and you will earn incentives for
every member you sponsor. Call Jessica, or myself, in the office with
your prospective member names, and we will follow up with them.
Thank you for your continued support of the Club!
Turf Talk
By Derek Wilkerson
Spring is upon us earlier this year than most.
Although most of the course is in the process of
“waking up,” not all of it is ready to be mowed
on a regular basis. Our nighttime temperatures
are still in the 30’s and that is keeping the ground
temperature in a range that does not encourage
sustained daily growth. We are mowing the areas that are in need of
attention, and assessing all others on a regular schedule. The greens
were aerified as scheduled, and are recovering as expected with
the weather that we are currently having.
The maintenance facility
is beginning to buzz with
anticipation as we add some
team members in preparation
for the season. Our full-time
team is relatively unchanged, and
our seasonal team will have a
few familiar faces returning too,
as we enter into the summer
months. Many of the high school
and college students that were
part of the team last year will
be returning when school is
out for the summer.
Another new team member you will see on the course is our new
Weather Station. The PGA Tour has graciously provided, at no cost to
us, a Weather Station for the Club to use at our discretion. I have set
up a lightning alert network for key personnel. I anticipate this
being an integral part of our ongoing success.
Plan ahead for this summer:

Golf Updates
By Brian Maloney
Hey, Hey… It’s May, May!
This is such a big month for we golfers here at Highland Springs.
On Tuesday, May 3rd, we will begin our famous “COUPLES NINE & DINE.”
Every other Tuesday evening, we pair two couples together for an enjoyable
nine holes of golf, followed by a delicious dinner. This is the one place where
a drink and a drive works! Tee time is 5:45pm and you are guaranteed to have a ball, (because the
worst you can do is win a sleeve of balls each time you play).
On the Tuesday evenings that we are not holding Couples Golf, I am happy to invite all of the
ladies to come out to our BLUE CHIPPERS lesson sessions. Starting on May 10th, at 5:45pm, we
will learn and practice our short games. The lessons are free and the people you will meet are
priceless! Whether you are just beginning, or hoping to be the next women’s Club champion,
this night is for you—come join us!
The Ladies Golf Association will hold its first Guest Day on May 11th, and the men will hold their
first Stag Day on the 12th. These fun events are designed to allow you the opportunity to entertain
a guest at a reduced price and play for some prizes.
On Friday, May 27th, we will be holding the Cobra Golf Demo Day from 3-7 pm, followed on
Saturday the 28th by the Cobra Golf 2-Member Net Tournament. This year Cobra will be giving
away nice prizes on all of the Par 3 holes for closest to the pin during the tournament.

As you can see, there is a lot going on in May. However, there are tons of times when you can
just come out and enjoy a relaxing round of golf with friends and family. The tee time program
is available online, with the exception that the last 24 hours must be made by contacting the Golf
Shop. We always love to talk to you, so feel free to call or stop in to spend some time with us.
We’ve missed you this winter, and it is time to see you enjoying our beautiful course once again.

Finally, On Memorial Day Monday, we will host the 18 Holes of Fun event. There is a contest
on every hole, and it’s just $10 to enter. This year we will offer a “Players Pool” option. For an
additional $10, the Players Pool will be divided equally between the “Players Pool” entrants for
the closest to the pin winners. There will be a separate “Players Pool” proximity marker on
each par three for those who want to up the ante.

I want to encourage all children and grandchildren to come join us. We will
work on the four competitive strokes and teach the children how to
participate in the meets. We have age groups from 6 and under to
15 – 18 year olds. Our swim meets are on Thursdays so there
won’t be practices on those days once the meets get started.

I am more excited than ever before to get the summer season
underway! The past six years as a lifeguard here at the Club have
been phenomenal as I’ve had the chance to meet and get to know
members and their families. I’m excited to start implementing
the knowledge I’ve gained, and I’m ready to take on this summer as
the Pool Manager. Transitioning from a lifeguard to a managerial
position might seem like a big step, but with my background in
employment services, my history here at Highland Springs, and
my pool knowledge and expertise, I will strive to continually
provide a level of quality that our members have
come to expect.

Coming into this season, we have mostly new guards.
I’ve made it my goal to hire the most personable people that I can—and
see to it that we can meet any need that a member may have.
The Club will continue to offer private swimming lessons
during operating hours, as well as lots of special events.
I look forward to opening day, May 24th, and
I can’t wait to have a great summer!
