TRANSGENDER ACTIVIST CATHERINE MCGREGOR
NAMED QLD AUSTRALIAN OF THE YEAR
R
By Toby Longhurst
AAF Group Captain
and
transgender
advocate
Catherine
McGregor has been named the
Queensland Australian of the
Year for 2016.
McGregor, who is the world’s
highest ranking trans military
official, was presented with her
award by Queensland Premier
Annastacia Palaszczuk after being
selected from a group of four
nominees including humanitarian
Lucy Strickland, journalist Peter
Greste, and human rights activist
Debbie Kilroy.
Gp Capt McGregor has served
three tours of duty and since
announcing that she would
transition to identify as female in
2012, has used her public profile
to help raise awareness and
understanding of trans issues in
the community.
“I hope I’m worthy of the trust
emplaced in me by my fellow
Queenslanders and by the
committee,” McGregor told the
audience at the Queensland State
Library when accepting her award.
“You’ve honoured me, but more
importantly, you’ve honoured the
ADF of whom I’m a member. Also
you’ve given great hope to a very,
very small minority of Australians,
those who are transgendered and
intersex - a widely misunderstood
group in our community. If I can
give them any visibility and hope
in the coming year, then that will
be an enormous gift to me, one
which I can’t repay.”
REMEMBER & CELEBRATE: CANDLELIGHT
VIGIL RETURNS FOR WORLD AIDS DAY
A

seen at last year’s
World AIDS Day candlelight
vigil in New Farm Park – the
first seen in Brisbane in seven
years – the Queensland AIDS
Council will again be holding
another vigil again this year to
remember friends and family
members lost to HIV/AIDS on
1 December.
The non-religious event will this
year be held in Reddacliff Place
in Brisbane’s CBD, a move that
organiser Gary Williams says
is a nod to the many vigils held
in King George Square at the
height of the epidemic, while also
acknowledging that HIV touches
all communities, not just our own.
“For many years now HIV has
also affected the heterosexual
community and is no longer a
Gay man’s illness,” Mr Williams
told QNews. “We need to embrace
the whole of community and
draw them into the nucleolus not
segregate them and pretend they
are not out there.”
Several speakers will share their
personal experiences with HIV/
AIDS with an Auslan interpreter
present. Candles will be supplied
for everyone wishing to partake in
the vigil, while those in attendance
will also have the opportunity to
write a message for lost loved ones.
Williams added that while HIV is
different now, we as a community
must never forget the devastating
effects that HIV/AIDS had on our
McGregor later told AAP that
the award signified the changing
attitudes of Australians.
“The Queensland I was born into
could not have accepted me as the
trans woman I am,” McGregor
said.
“An awful lot has changed since
then, and is still changing in an
amazing way. To win this award
would be an incredible milestone
and shows the change in attitude
to transgenderism.”
McGregor will now join the other

from each state in Canberra for

January 2016.
community, and the fact that HIV
is still with us.
“It is true that HIV is not the illness
that it used to be and people can
live a normal life, maintain jobs
and experience a lot less side
effects from medication,” Williams
said. “But we must never forget
those times when life was very
unkind, people were extremely ill
and a massive number of people
lost their lives from this mystery
illness.
F
Bishop who has long kept her
personal position on the issue to
herself made the announcement
on an episode of Channel 10’s The
Project, nonchalantly stating that
she had no qualms with a change
to the Marriage Act and that she is
happy that all Australians will get
to have their voices heard.
“I have absolutely no concerns
about it myself, but I know there
a lot of people who are deeply
concerned about the issue,” Ms
Bishop said when questioned
about her stance on the matter by
host Carrie Bickmore.
“That’s why I think a plebiscite,
where the Australian people get
to have a vote on it, on an issue
as fundamental as this, that
goes to the very composition of
our community, the way we feel
about each other, how we treat

“World AIDS Day is not only part of
the history of our community but
it was a time of great devastation,
tragedy and a period in the lives of

STONEWALL 50TH ANNIVERSARY
New York has been confirmed as the

police harassment and raids of gay bars.
The riots are often cited as the birthplace

The Netherlands have become the

Netherlands, with the policy now being
changed to allow donation provided the

or many, “coming out” to
family and friends is a
stressful experience.
And if doing once is hard enough,
spare a thought for Tina Healy
who has to come out to her mother
every couple of weeks.
Tina, 54, is a transgender woman
and feared that revealing herself
as female might be too stressful
for her mother, who suffers from
dementia.
But her mum’s “beautiful”
response of love and acceptance
soon put her mind at rest.
TAIWAN – TAIPEI CITY INVITES
SAME-SEX COUPLES TO MARRY
Since 1973 over 16,000 couples
have participated in mass wedding
ceremonies hosted by the Taipei City
Government, and now for the first time
same-sex couples have been permitted
to participate. This year year, out of
123 couples to step forward and say ‘I
do’ in front of a packed crowd, ten were
same sex couples. Despite no formal
recognition of the union by the state, the
couples were happy to join in. “Every love
deserves to be cherished,” said Taipei
City Mayor Ko Wen-je, who served as
the ceremony’s presiding witness.
“When I told her I was a woman,
she just looked at me and said,
‘Oh, what do you know? I’ve got a
beautiful new daughter!” Tina told
ABC News.
and whatnot, and it was just so
beautiful to me that making new
clothes for me was one of the first
things she thought of.”
Because her mother’s memory is
failing, Tina has to come out every
time she visits, but the response is
always the same.
When she came “dressed as Tina,
not Chris (her former self)”, the
first thing her mum did was “put
my hand to my face and say,
‘You’re beautiful!”
Tina said the two of them then had
tea together and her mother said,
“You’ve held this in for a long time,
haven’t you? Why didn’t you tell
me? I would never have minded.”
It was the happiest time of Tina’s
life, she said, adding that she had
known she was a woman since she
was 4 but waited nearly 50 years to

Tina, from Melbourne, has four
children with her former partner
Tess and two grandchildren.
“My message for any trans person
who wants to come out is to come
out when you feel ready and safe,”
she said. “Everything will change,
for sure, but it’s not always for
the worse, like we might assume.
Sometimes, things change for the
better.”
“I started to cry, and she pulled
me to her shoulder and said ‘Cry it
out, dear. Cry it out.’ My partner at
the time cried as well.”
Tina added that after crying,
her mother, who used to be a
“beautiful seamstress”, then said,
‘Well, now you’re going to need
some new clothes! What do you
need?”
Tina explained she “had always

FEATURE
HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT
OF GAY DATING APPS
Ben Walters is a psychologist at the Centre for Human Potential www.cfhp.
com.au.
H
By Ben Walters
ook-up apps often come as standard issue with the
average gay man. And it’s not hard to see why - they
give us access to a seemingly endless supply of (often
ridiculously attractive) available people in our area, they’re fun
to use, and they let us to connect with people who we’d otherwise
never have a chance to meet.
But, despite these perks, people who use these apps often walk away from
their experiences feeling more lonely and insecure than when they started.
It is impossible to interact with so many people without experiencing some
kind of rejection – whether it’s that hot guy ignoring your message, chats
fizzling out, or conversation ending abruptly after meeting up.
So, what can you do to make your app experience more enjoyable?
One way to start is by questioning your assumptions about what everyone
else online is doing. Once you get online, it’s easy to assume that everyone
else is getting exactly the kind of responses they want, from a lot of different
guys, a lot of the time. But, this is just not true. Nobody is appealing to
all the people they are interested in (even that guy with the ripped torso).
Rejection is never going to be pleasant, but it’s easier to cope with when you
realise that being rejected is not the same as failing.
Supplementing apps with other ways of meeting people can also help. While
apps are great for instantly finding new people, there’s still an important
place for making an effort to meet friends of friends, joining community
groups and striking up conversations with new people at bars and clubs.
If you’re finding that your use of apps is interfering in your life or
strongly affecting your mood, it can also be a good idea to check in with a
psychologist or counsellor.

IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Mark Newton-Troon
1976 - 2015
We recently lost our much loved friend after a long
battle with Depression. In spite of his own struggles,
Mark always put others first. He always had an ear to
listen and a shoulder to cry on if you needed it.
Through his company Illusion Entertainment Mark
managed many of Brisbane’s leading drag entertainers
and did all he could to foster and support new talent.
As a trained hairdresser, Mark personally styled
hair for noteables such as Australian legend Rhonda
Burchmore (who knew she wore wigs???), as well as
many other performers.
Away from what we call the ‘scene’, Mark loved and
enjoyed his friends, family, new adventures and

Mark was laid to rest on Monday 2nd November in

WHEN IS THE FEMALE
CONDOM NOT A FEMALE
CONDOM?
W
By Tammy Rudduck
hen it is an internal
condom, of course!
Is the term “female condom”
outdated? While it can be difficult
to advocate for changes at the
higher level, we can do our bit and
adopt the term “internal” over
“female”. We can also advocate
the use of internal condoms for
all receptive partners, not just
those identifying as female or with
vaginas. This is the messaging
from FC2 manufacturers who are
now endorsing the FC2 condom
for anal use.
The FC2 is made from nitrile,
which is stronger against breakage
than regular condoms and can
be used with water or oil based
lubricants, and by people with
latex allergies. Other benefits of
the FC2 include extra protection
against skin to skin STI’s and it
does not require an erect penis for
insertion. Not only this, but it has
also been identified as providing
increased pleasure to both parties
due to the material used and
looser fit.
For some time now there has been
talk about town that men were
using the internal condom for anal
sex. This was never an approved
use for the female/internal
condom, but now it is!
You can also fill out the form at
www.chep.hiv/freecondoms
if
you would like them to send you
some internal condoms to try,
for free!
The FC2 is currently the only
approved internal condom in
Australia and it is a highly effective
prevention against HIV and
other STI’s when used correctly.
The FC2 is a 16cm condom (like
a super-sized regular condom)
that the receptive partner inserts,
either with his finger or on his
partner’s penis. It has an outer
ring and inner ring to help keep
the condom in place, but the inner
ring can be taken out for anal
use. There are many websites and
YouTube clips demonstrating how
to use the internal condom for anal
use (there are also clips for vaginal
use also).

OSCAR WILDE’S GREATEST QUOTES
H
as there ever been a
wittier writer than
Oscar Wilde? From
his brilliant plays such as
‘The Importance of being
Earnest’ to his classic novel
The Picture of Dorian Gray’,
Wilde’s words were always
as ingenious as they were
entertaining.
Flamboyant
and colourful throughout
the drab conservatism of
Victorian England, Wilde was
the world’s first gay icon and
his work still shines just as
brightly today. Here are a few
of our favourite Oscar Wilde
quotes.
“To me the life of a businessman
who eats his breakfast early in the
morning, catches a train for the city,
stays there in the dingy, dusty world
of the commercial world, and goes back
to his house every evening, and after
supper to sleep, is worse than the life
of a galley slave- his chains are golden
instead of iron.”
“The public is wonderfully tolerant.
It forgives everything except genius.”
“Education is an admirable thing.
But it is well to remember from time
to time that nothing that is worth
knowing can be taught.”
“There is only one thing in the world
worse than being talked about, and
that is not being talked about.”
“The world is a stage, but the play is
badly cast.”
“To define is to limit.
“We are all in the gutter, but some of
us are looking at the stars.”
“The truth is rarely pure and never
simple.”
“You will always be fond of me.
I represent to you all the sins you
never had the courage to commit.”
“Every saint has a past, and every
sinner has a future.”
“I am so clever that sometimes I don’t
understand a single word of what I am
saying.”
“Some cause happiness wherever they
go; others whenever they go.”
“Anyone who lives within their means
suffers from a lack of imagination.”
“Always borrow money form a
pessimist. He won’t expect it back.”
“Fashion is a form of ugliness so
intolerable that we have to alter it
every six months.”
“My own business always bores me to
death; I prefer other people’s.”
“I like men who have a future and
women who have a past.”
“Life is much too important a thing
ever to talk seriously about it.”
“Keep love in your heart. A life
without it is like a sunless garden
when the flowers are dead.”
“The only form of fiction in which real
characters do not seem out of place is
history.”
“Only dull people are brilliant at
breakfast.”
“Always forgive your enemies;
nothing annoys them so much.”
“Nothing is worth doing except what
the world says in impossible.”
“I have always been of the opinion
that consistency is the last refuge of
the unimaginative.”
ARTS
“By giving us the opinions of the
uneducated, journalism keeps us
in touch with the ignorance of the
community.”

FREEHELD IS THE NEW
QUEER FILM THAT IS SURE
TO TOUCH YOUR HEART
1
Review by Peter Gray
0 years ago New Jersey cop Laurel Hester had to fight tooth
and nail – predominantly from her deathbed – for her livein girlfriend to receive the benefits she deserved as gay
civil unions weren’t recognised at the time. It’s the kind of
story that will hit close to home for many a viewer, and will
potentially anger some as well, but the strength of ‘Freeheld’
lies in its overall inspirational temperament.
FILM
finest moments. Steve Carell, who has oddly been absent from a lot of
the promotional material, livens the film up considerably as a flamboyant
lawyer who takes on Laurel’s case, and his insistence on pushing Shannon’s
buttons with his quips allows the film a little room to breathe.
‘Freeheld’ has been made specifically to support the LGBT community as
well as open the eyes of those who may not be completely open-minded
about gay marriage, and present to them the message that equality is what
we are really striving for. Simple but inspirational, and an unashamed
A decade isn’t really that long ago for views on same-sex partnerships
to be so skewed, and though the US has broken the barrier by legalising
gay marriage, Australian audiences will no doubt be heavily affected
by aspects of the story that the LGBT communities are still fighting for
today. That aside, ‘Freeheld’ is a particularly conventional tale with Laurel
(Julianne Moore) surviving her day-to-day existence in a closeted manner,
knowing her sexuality could potentially disable any chances of advancing
in her department. Her walls slowly start to come down when she meets
Stacie (Ellen Page), a confident young mechanic who instigates the change
in Laurel accepting her sexuality.
Though the film spends a great deal on the eventual fight for Stacie’s rights
as Laurel succumbs to terminal lung cancer, ‘Freeheld’ thankfully takes its
time to invest in the relationship between the two women so that we care
even moreso when tragedy strikes. Moore, fresh off her Oscar win for ‘Still
Alice’, and Page, in one of her first film roles since coming out as a lesbian,
make for a believable pairing, despite their age difference, and it’s their
chemistry that drives the film above its clichéd simplicities. Elsewhere
there’s Michael Shannon, one of the great character actors of his generation,
finally getting to play the good guy as Laurel’s working partner, and in
his unwavering support for their relationship, as well as his rejection of
the rampant homophobia in his office, he brings about some of the film’s

BUSH CHANGE? MORE THAN A REMOTE POSSIBILITY
L
et’s not beat around the
bush – this job is not for
just anyone.
But if you’re into the simple
things in life – this is a great
opportunity.
Forget
about
iPads, laptops or even TV –
ABC radio will have to suffice.
Forget about bars or any
semblance of night life – other
than gazing at the stars. This is
outback Queensland – and John
needs help.
After a fall on his veranda “a simple accident” - in 2009,
the 82-year-old Aussie battler
suffered a broken hip which
has degenerated into cartilage
damage under his kneecap.
As a result, John can only get
around on a 4-wheeler walker
– not ideal as he strives to run
a 8321 hectare (20,560 acre)
property.
Photos by GlacierDave on Flickr - He creates the most amazing Australian Outback Photos
“I’m not as mobile as I used to
be,” John says.
“I have no family, no sons. I
need a good mate, a right-hand
man to help me out.”
John has lived on the family
station for 55 years but can no
longer look after the 300 sheep,
40 head of cattle and 100 station,
quarter and Arab horses.
While most of us take our home
comforts for granted, John
wouldn’t swap his life on the
land for anything.
It can be very rewarding.
The position would suit a
single person as it is shared
accommodation.
It’s remote, it’s an iconic Aussie
way of life.
If it sounds like you, give John a
call on 0428 877901.
N.B: Don’t send a text message
… at age 83 his technology
skills are limited!
“It’s very isolated – 8km to my
nearest neighbour and 60km
into town,” John said.
“There’s been bugger all rain
for three years – 3ml or 5ml
now and then. It just gets worse
and worse.”
The upside is, there is solar
power and more than adequate
mobile phone coverage.
