in need of a complete escape from city life.
December 2013 will see the opening of
Maalifushi by COMO, the first luxury resort
on the Thaa Atoll in the Maldives. This secluded
eight acre island retreat with a uniquely private
location tempts guests with pristine white
sands, swaying palm trees and bright turquoise
lagoons dotted with uninhabited islands, one
of which can be booked for castaway picnics
and romantic private dining. The resort’s
enchanting overwater accommodation, which
includes a number of deluxe suites and villas

Koichiro Ikebuchi, feature COMO’s signature

THREE NEW COMO RETREATS
So while our three selected destinations
here are all very much steeped in COMO
thinking, each one is most definitely distinct,
putting their own inventive twist on service,
accommodation and presentation. They are
all new too, giving guests the opportunity
to be the first to experience each of the
properties whilst they are eager to establish
an unassailable reputation as the leading
resorts in their own part of the world.
Point Yamu by COMO, on the northeast
coast of Phuket, is the tenth member of
COMO’s family of unique destinations; the
resort will open its doors to aficionados of
luxury travel in November this year. Located
on the very tip of Yamu peninsula, Point
Yamu offers 106 rooms, including 27 private
villas with panoramic views of the cape and
Andaman Sea. Guests can use the resort as
a base to explore the dramatic limestone
islands and calm turquoise waters of Phang

come to be known as James Bond Island
due to its starring role in the movie The Man
with the Golden Gun. Just 20 minutes from

ONE DEFINITIVE STANDARD
There are so many commendable things to
say about COMO Hotels and Resorts that
perhaps the most appropriate place to begin
is with the hotel group’s philosophy, which
encapsulates the experience that guests can
expect whether they choose a remote tropical
island destination or a beach resort beside
a buzzing metropolis. In a nutshell, COMO
seeks to transform people’s perception of
what travel can be, and they do it by treating
every person as an individual, with grace,
attention and respect. That way, they say, they
can ensure that guests always have a unique
experience enjoying the stylish environments
whilst gaining insights into the destinations at
the same time.
WHY SETTLE FOR
ONE WHEN YOU
CAN HAVE TWO...
PAOLA NAVONE, POINT YAMU DESIGNER:
“You can’t come to
Point Yamu and not
be influenced by the
view and the resort’s
contact with the
Andaman Sea. Because
you’re at the end of a
peninsula, you have
this beautiful empty
space and water all
around. I’m used to the
Greek Mediterranean
where one is so often
looking down into the
deep blue, but from
Point Yamu you have
a vision that spreads
out from where you’re
standing to the far
horizon. You feel the
presence of the sea
at every moment,
and the reflection of
the sky. You feel like
you want to go out
in a boat, to explore
all those islands that
look like bubbles, like
cakes in the ocean.”

IN THE KNOW...

1. 2014 marks the 50th

British Virgin Islands
2. The cliff-top suites of
Oil Nut Bay provide great
vantage points for the
annual BVI Spring Regatta.
Sit back and watch the
spectacle of the race in
luxurious comfort.
WHERE TO GO
The British Virgin Islands are an escapists
dream. Exquisite islands float in an emerald sea,
their beauty more than just skin deep, a distinct
character emanating from each.
3. The national cocktail,
‘The Painkiller’ was
invented at The Soggy
Dollar Bar on Jost Van Dyke
Island. Moor your boat in
the bay and swim to shore
to sample the infamous
beverage.
Anegada, the only coral island in the volcanic
chain, is surrounded by striking reefs including
one of the Caribbean’s largest, Horseshoe Reef.
Renowned for the best lobster in the Caribbean,
this is where foodies flock for the most succulent
catch of the sea – celebrated this year at the
inaugural Lobster Festival in November, which
culminates in a Mardi Gras-style beach party;
another superb opportunity to experience the
genuine warmth of West Indian hospitality.
Virgin Gorda feels exclusive, peppered with
yacht clubs, quiet coves and the ubiquitous coral
sand beaches. As dusk falls, people jump into their
boats and head into the North Sound, an influx of
catamarans racing towards Saba Rock vying for
the best happy hour seats. The atmosphere here
is fabulous, fuelled by the infamous rum punch.
Shoals of fish and a huge barracuda teem in the
waters at feeding time, a real highlight.
WHERE TO STAY
Peter Island – Peter Island is my personal
favourite and a truly world class setting for a
laid-back-luxe holiday. A melange of tropical
vegetation, magnificent beaches and secluded
bays, at 1800 acres, it is the largest private island
in the BVIs. Explore the island; walking sticks are
provided in all rooms and hiking trails are marked
out with stop off points complete with watercoolers. Spend sun-soaked days on Deadman’s
Bay beach – one of the most picture-perfect
beaches in the Caribbean, or indulge in Ayurvedic
treatments in The Spa.
The main restaurant is the place to be on Saturday
nights. Colin, the Guest Relations Manager,
entertains with his charismatic charm and superb
voice; this old-style crooner is certainly a firm
favourite with guests. At breakfast, try attendant
Jean Kelly’s famous coconut-crusted French toast,

Oil Nut Bay
Through the archway of the arrival jetty you can
see the resort in a shimmering haze on the beach
– you know you have landed somewhere very
special. Three suites and two villas make up this
exceptional new addition to the British Virgin
Islands; and the jewel in the crown has to be the
Fendi Casa-designed Penthouse Suite.
I have seen some fabulous hotels but confess
I was left in awe by this haven of luxury and
tranquillity. Suites are perched on a cliff on the
Atlantic side of the resort and much is made of
the magnificent views – two full-length sliding
glass walls cocoon the exquisite lounge area and
perfectly frame these scintillating vistas.
All of the suites are white and minimalistic
with the latest technology and gadgets –
an iPad to control the room and a mobile to
contact reception should you need anything;
huge marble terraces have their own infinity
pool. There is a real sense of seclusion and
privacy here, and sitting on the oversized
daybed, listening to the waves break against
the rocks below, absorbing that amazing view,
you feel that you never want to leave.
The main area of the resort is home to the
exclusive beach club. It costs a cool million
dollars to become a member here and it is
spectacular. Three pools are split over three
levels leading right down to the beach where
sumptuous loungers and daybeds are plentiful.
Guests have complimentary access.
Rosewood Little Dix Bay – Lying behind
a colourful coral reef on Virgin Gorda, this
acclaimed Rosewood resort celebrates its 50th
anniversary in 2014. A superb hotel for families,
the marvellous arc of white sand beach is the
centre-point for countless aquatic activities.
Sunfish sailing, kayaking and paddle-boarding
are all available or, for a more private beachside
experience, hop aboard one of the complimentary
resort boats and they will take you to deserted
coves accessible only from the water.
Quite unlike other resorts in the BVIs, Little
Dix Bay is also a great base from which to get
out and about. Virgin Gorda has much to offer.
Visit the famous Baths of Virgin Gorda or jump
in a taxi and take the short ride to Spanish Town,
where restaurants and waterfront bars offer an
atmospheric alternative to the resort.
NEW TO THE BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS
There is magnificent snorkelling to be found
close by, too. As the resort is located very close
to Necker Island, it is possible to take one of the
hotel boats and snorkel in the pristine waters
around the island – a definite must-do.
Biras Creek – A relaxed resort in the beautiful
setting of the North Sound. The bars and
restaurants located on atolls throughout this inlet
are all accessible by water taxi from this hotel, a
real plus for those who want to explore. Try Bitter
End Bar and Restaurant and the Costa Smeralda
Yacht Club.
Four members of the Carrier team, including
our MD, Steve Kimber, were invited to stay at
Oil Nut Bay earlier this year. Should you be
considering the Caribbean’s hottest hotel for
your next holiday, our team have the first-hand
experience you need and are ready to help.

FREGATE ISLAND PRIVATE,
SEYCHELLES
Privacy and exclusivity are intertwined with true ecological credentials
on the Robinson Crusoe-style Fregate Island Private. Every effort
has been made to regain and maintain the original biological balance
of this beautiful island in the Seychelles. Protecting and nurturing
the indigenous species of flora, fauna and wildlife on this verdant isle
is truly woven into everyday life. Take a nature walk with one of the
resident ecologists through lush vegetation up to the summit of Mount
Signal, the highest point on the island and learn about the restored
rare woodland and almost extinct species of native flora that are now
beginning to flourish.
A pioneer of conservation in the Seychelles, the private island is home
to the Seychelles Magpie Robin. Thirty years ago, it was the second
rarest bird in the world, now thanks to the efforts of the on-island team,
the ground-nesting species has been saved from extinction.

The white sandy beaches of Fregate Island also provide a vital nesting
habitat for the endangered Hawksbill and Green Turtles. Every nesting
season, staff safeguard several hundred nests – you may have the chance
to witness first-hand one of nature’s true miracles; the sight of a female
turtle laying her eggs on the shore.
This genuine commitment to preservation is part of the fabric of
Fregate and offers guests an exceptional eco experience. The island
strives to be a self-sufficient resort; fruit and vegetables served are
grown in organic gardens and sea water is distilled and distributed
in glass bottles. And the spa has its own apothecary, where organic
products infuse the treatments with a real focus on holistic well-being.
A new spa concept also sees Fregate as the only resort in the Seychelles
to specialise in Ayurvedic treatments.

Madikwe Game Reserve. Ingeniously set
amongst boulders and age-old Tamboti trees,
the luxurious suites provide a truly romantic
setting. The honeymoon suite comes complete
with an outdoor bath; romance abounds as you
bathe by candlelight looking out across the
plains watching elephants grazing.
The celebrated, and very exclusive, Leopard
Hills Reserve has recently undergone a full
refurbishment. Each of the eight glass-fronted
suites now boast new contemporary bathrooms
complete with indoor and outdoor showers,
and striking new decks featuring plunge
pools. What better setting to view the superb
panoramas of the bushveld than in your
elevated sanctuary above the plains.
Game drives are conducted in state-of-theart Land Rovers; your chariot for off-road

this reserve is renowned. Setting off in search

Italy and culture:
HOTEL DE RUSSIE, ROME
AND HOTEL SAVOY, FLORENCE
A country famed for its quintessential glamour, art-filled cities steeped
in history and La Dolce Vita; there is no better destination for a holiday
embracing culture.
Florence is renowned as the birthplace of the Renaissance; the iconic red
dome of the magnificently imposing Duomo forming the focal point of
this beautiful city. Hotel Savoy (pictured right), on the lively and animated
Piazza della Repubblica, is an elegantly contemporary hotel and provides
the perfect base to explore all that is on offer at this enticing destination.
The best way to discover Florence is on foot – where you can live and
breathe the beauty of this city. Meander in the serene grandeur of the
Boboli Gardens, the swaying hush of the Cypress trees juxtaposed against
the hum and stir of the cobbled streets of the city below. Learn about the
history of the iconic canvas in the Gucci museum; partake of a taste of la
dolce from one of the countless gelaterias; and, as the sun sets over the
River Arno, meander over the Ponte Vecchio to watch talented artists and
street performers in the atmospheric romance of the Firenze dusk.
All roads lead to Rome, a bustling metropolis with an immensely rich
historical heritage and a cosmopolitan atmosphere. Centrally located in
the beating heart of this wonderfully chaotic city, Rocco Forte’s Hotel de
Russie is your stylish base. Next to the Piazza del Popolo and just a short
stroll from the Spanish Steps, the wonders of the ‘Eternal City’ are on
your doorstep waiting to be discovered.
Marvel at the dramatic magnificence of the Colosseum, the unforgettable
sight of St Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican and the enduring beauty of the
Trevi Fountain, before returning to Hotel de Russie’s beguiling terraced
gardens to sip on a chilled glass of Prossecco beneath ancient trees and
fragrant rose bushes.
Epicurean school in Venice:
GRITTI PALACE, A LUXURY COLLECTION HOTEL
Occupying a prestigious setting on the Grand Canal just a leisurely stroll from
Piazza San Marco, the imposing 16th Century Gritti Palace makes the perfect
place in which to learn the secrets of authentic Italian cooking. Executive
Chef Daniele Turco takes his participants on an exceptional culinary journey
through the world of Venetian recipes, discovering seasonal products from the
lagoon and showing how the cuisine reflects the diverse cultural influences
of centuries past. Although Chef Turco’s gastronomy is rooted in Venetian
heritage, extensive travel and working abroad in locations as diverse as Malta,
Sicily, Turkey and Morocco have led to him incorporating new gastronomic
stimuli into his culinary repertoire. In the half-day private classes, held for a
maximum of eight people, you will learn how to cook an exquisite three course
dinner using local ingredients. Classes begin with a tour of the atmospheric
Rialto Market, one of the oldest in Italy, learning about local products and
how to select them. A typical Venetian aperitivo with cicchetti is taken at a
traditional bacaro wine bar, before returning to the Epicurean School for the
cooking lesson. There is also a three day programme – with a minimum of
four participants – for those who want to journey deeper into the gastronomic
delights of Venice and its surrounds.

Many families regard ABAMA Golf & Spa Resort as a hidden gem. Club
Abami provides cooking workshops, sculpture classes, treasure hunts and

The superlatives flow easily when the location is as spectacular as the
Conrad Maldives Rangali Island; spanning across two idyllic islets,
exquisite accommodations are scattered amidst paradisiacal settings.

enchanting Retreat Water Villas. Set on stilts above the cobalt waters in a
private part of the lagoon, they are designed for pure relaxation of mind,

With startling white sands and a sea that
cascades down the blue spectrum, through
sapphire, cobalt and azure to diamond clear
water, the beaches of this Caribbean island are
one of its most enviable features. Its world-class
dining scene is another, and is a large part of
Anguilla’s appeal. Discerning foodies appreciate
the creativity and fusion of different cuisines
served in the numerous first-class restaurants,
combined with a level of service characteristic
to the island – elegantly welcoming and

Anguillan way of life – head to Scilly Cay on a

both locals and celebrities kick back and relax
between its conch shelled walls and thatched

of a beach bar. The ‘cuisine capital of the

And it’s not simply about what goes on below

sumptuous service. Removing footwear as
you step aboard – an asset for the lush carpet
underfoot in the rooms and lounge, you are
welcomed with a coconut cocktail and the relief
of cooling flannels. Cabins are given over to a
capacious double bed and there’s even room
for a desk and a small sofa – not that you’d need
it, the lounge is too inviting – and dining on
offer that wouldn’t be out of place in a high-end
hotel, yet created in a galley kitchen. Between
dives, we feasted on four-course dinners and
buffet lunches of local specialities and, speaking
of local, fish so fresh it’s as if they caught it over
the side an hour earlier. However, it was waking
to their take on Eggs Benedict, enjoyed on the

ISLAND HOPPING IN THE MALDIVES
BY TOBY WHITE, MANAGING EDITOR OF THE ARBUTURIAN
The Maldives. So synonymous is this with
the image of an island paradise that it doesn’t
even need the word ‘islands’ after its name.
Being comparatively small, perfectly formed,
blessed with palm trees and white coral sand,
each island makes for that aforementioned
picture paradise. And, given their size, it’s
little surprise that there’s a principle of ‘one
island, one resort’, which makes the appeal of
marooning oneself on a desert island all the
more alluring. But, as an adventure-seeking
travel writer, what had always concerned me
about visiting a small island paradise was just
that – being marooned. How would I relieve
the onset of boredom? How wrong could I
have been…
Firstly, there’s the choice of destination.
And while there are over 100 resort islands
throughout the country – which numbers
over 1000 islands – few have really mastered
how best to create the singular, superlative
destination and just one stands above those,
the Four Seasons.
Well, two, technically. Four Seasons are
fortunate enough to have two island resorts,
from which you’d be hard pressed to decide
between. The first, on the North Malé Atoll,
is Kuda Huraa, meaning ‘Little Island’, and
little it is. One of the smallest islands in
the Maldives, the resort has been, suitably,
created in the spirit of a Maldivian village.
Beautifully-finished villas, flush with
sumptuous design and amenities, are created
in an aesthetic trimmed with hardwood
and high A-frame ceilings finished with
palm weave. Each is nestled into foliage for
privacy, the beach a mere step or two from
the plunge pool on the veranda. The feeling
is one of intimacy, comfort and relaxation. I
had just two nights and I could have settled
there forever. Well, there, or The Island Spa a
short hop away with glass panels in the floor

allowing you to watch the marine life drift by

Not a chance.
The mood is similar in the second, Landaa
Giraavaru. A thrilling and swift seaplane flight
north to the Baa Atoll, a UNESCO World
Biosphere Reserve, but it’s bigger, grander,
seemingly more modern in design but then
just as raw and rustic, as witnessed weaving
through the green verdant interior on bicycles
personalised with ones initials. Here, though,
the amenities on offer and dining experiences
seem more jet set, more sophisticated and
typified by Blu, the beachside restaurant that
sits on the fringes of that classic Maldives
image – the brilliant white sandbar lapped by
crystal clear blue water.
There is one thing the Four Seasons have
which no other resort can offer – the
definitive Maldives experience...
our own, with the rich, deep blue surrounding
us that defined it for me. It’s an image that will
live long in the memory. Oh, and did I mention
they have a massage facility on the sun deck?
If there’s one limitation about being marooned
on a paradise island, it’s just that: you’re
marooned. The Four Seasons Explorer allows
you to see the islands in a way not seen by
most visitors, from the sea. And, after all, the
Maldives is a country that’s 90% water.

Jordan discovered
When you think of Jordan, you think of its most iconic site: the Nabataen
rose-red city of Petra, however the country has so many more secrets, as
Senior Product Manager, Vanessa Dean, discovered on her recent visit.
I started my journey in Madaba; here the 6th
Century mosaics are the breathtaking main
attraction. Venturing on to Mount Nebo, where
Moses is buried and the place where he first
viewed the ‘Promised Land’, a true sense of
history abounds. The panorama, overlooking the
Promised Land, takes in Jericho, Jerusalem and
The Dead Sea. I spent time here appreciating the
view and feeling the history of this sacred place
wash over me.
At The Movenpick Petra, I absolutely fell in
love with the hotel’s roof top terrace – the view
of the sunsets across the pink hued rocks is
not to be missed. After breakfast, I started my
journey to the Siq. Even before arriving at the
entrance, you can see carvings in the rocks
and tombs. The beauty of the Siq is striking – a
narrow gorge just over one kilometre long, with
some parts being no more than three metres
wide and up to 80 metres in height.
The journey down this dramatic gorge ends
with Petra’s most beautiful edifice – The
Treasury, or ‘Al-Khazneh’. I had already seen
countless images of this view, but nothing could
have prepared me for my first sighting. It is
resplendent in its beauty. It becomes clear why
it is referred to as the Rose Red City. Further on,
the Street of the Facades, lined with the Theatre
and The Royal Tombs, wait to be explored.
From Petra I took an excursion to Wadi Rum.
I had seen many images of this part of Jordan
as well as watching Lawrence of Arabia;
however nothing can prepare you for the
sheer beauty and remoteness of this place.
T.E Lawrence described Wadi Rum as ‘vast,
echoing and God-Like’ and I agree. Monolithic
rocks rise up from the desert floor giving the
landscape a hauntingly beautiful appearance,
however it is the colours of the desert that take
your breath away.

world-renowned luxury resort. Revel in the
heart-stopping canyons, colossal rock formations
and majestic saguaro cacti in the authentic Wild

Vanessa on her enthralling
Jordan adventure.
Next I headed to the Dead Sea – the lowest
place on earth at over 400 metres below sea
level. Ever since I can remember I had heard
stories about being able to float weightlessly on
the Dead Sea due to its very high salt content;
on entering the sea it was the oddest sensation,
you can’t help but chuckle to yourself as you
try to swim.
My last stop in this beautiful desert kingdom,
I travelled inland into the dramatic ochre
mountains to the lush oasis that is the Evason
Ma’In Hot Springs & Six Senses Spa. Relaxing
by the pool with the gentle sounds of water
splashing down from the waterfalls off the
mountain rocks behind, I vowed that I would
one day return to this country so full of
mysticism and history.

Carrier’s guide on where to go for cultural festivals and events
November
03 - 07 Nov ~ Stay at The Taj Mahal Palace, India for the
FESTIVAL OF LIGHT IN MUMBAI
The beginning of the month sees the start of the most important event in the Hindu calendar as the five
day long festival of Diwali takes place. Also known as the ‘Festival of Light’ when houses are illuminated
with oil lamps and adorned with garlands of marigolds; nowhere in India celebrates Diwali quite like
Mumbai. Here the buildings of the historic centre are decked with lights, the streets are lined with
colourful processions and the water front is ablaze with spectacular firework displays.
Set on the harbour front overlooking one of the city’s most iconic landmarks, the Gateway to India, The
Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai plays an important role in the heritage of the city. Favourite of the Maharajahs,
the city’s first ‘grand hotel’ has welcomed an eclectic mix of celebrities and dignitaries since it first opened
its doors in 1903. Today its rooms effortlessly blend period touches with modern luxuries and offer up
some spectacular city panoramas. Suites are truly opulent, some recalling the splendour of Rajasthani
palaces, and their guests are invited to an indulgent high tea in the exclusive Palace Lounge. There is also
a choice of ten restaurants offering everything from Eastern Mediterranean classics to Japanese fusion,
together with a fitness centre, spa, outdoor pool and a concierge service for sightseeing options in the city.
22 - 25 Nov ~ Stay at Colony Club, Barbados for the
FOOD, WINE & RUM FESTIVAL
This is the time for gourmet indulgence on Barbados as the celebrated Caribbean
island hosts its fourth Food, Wine and Rum Festival. This year’s programme
promises to serve up a generous slice of island culture including street food from
the legendary Oistins Fish Fry, cooking demonstrations from five internationally
renowned chefs and rum plantation tours. Mixology lessons, wine seminars, a
gastronomic island cruise and a Bajan Fiesta all add to the island’s festival flavour.
Set on the Platinum Coast, Colony Club is the perfect base for the festival
long weekend. A former Colonial Club, it combines old world elegance with
contemporary luxury. In addition to an incomparable beachfront setting,
also on offer are four pools, spa treatments, a fitness centre, yoga classes and
complimentary watersports. The recently renovated, and now central part of
the ‘Colony Experience’, Laguna restaurant celebrates an eclectic range of local
produce within its daily menu from hibiscus sorbets to aubergine fritters. At the
centre, the new Laguna Bar boasts views over the pool and deck area. Guests are
invited to join the executive chef, Wayne Maynard, on fishing trips and herb garden
tours as he plans his next dish. The hotel is also developing an organic fruit and
vegetable garden and tilapia fish farm. Island influences can also be seen in the
décor of the refurbished luxury oceanview and poolside rooms which include Bajan
style coral stone walls, custom made warm-wooden furniture, french doors and a
bespoke lemongrass aromatherapy scent.

The Manor At Ngorongoro - Tanzania
Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort Saint Lucia
Anyone familiar with Tanzania’s Ngorongoro region
will understand immediately why it features highly as
a natural and cultural site on the World Heritage List.
Human evolution here can be traced back almost four
million years, with the fossilised footprints at Laetoli,
associated with the development of the human ability
to walk upright. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area
also contains the spectacular Ngorongoro Crater and
the Olduvai Gorge where anthropologists Louis and
Mary Leakey made many of their greatest discoveries.
The Crater is the world’s largest unflooded volcanic
caldera and is home to the Big Five as well as other
resident wildlife. Adjacent to the conservation area
stands The Manor at Ngorongoro, elegantly designed
in Cape-Dutch farmhouse style, sitting within the
Arabica coffee plantations that roll down the slopes
of the crater. The Manor is perfectly placed for game
drives to the Crater and Lake Manyara National
Park, coffee estate tours, horse-back riding and
renowned for its gourmet food presentations.
Between the dramatic volcanic Pitons of Saint
Lucia, stands Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort.
Decked out in colonial style architecture the
property features pure white rooms, dark wood
floors and private plunge pools, each also serviced
by a dedicated butler. It is easy to see why the
resort acts as a magnet for the world’s glitterati –
Matt Damon having renewed his vows here to wife
Luciana Barroso earlier this year. The tropical
climate is tempered by cooling trade winds,
perfect when having breakfast or taking afternoon
tea on the Palm Court Terrace, or enjoying a little
something at Bayside on the beach. The laid-back
Cane Bar with a resident rummelier would be at
home in downtown Manhattan, while the Great
Room is an impressive setting for Caribbeanthemed evenings. As for refreshment of the
spiritual kind, the Rainforest Spa has become
known for its signature Sulphur Seduction which
harnesses the benefits of the nearby Sulphur
Springs and volcano.

plumed Saint Lucia Parrot, Peewee and Oriole.
Saint Lucia’s environmental philosophy also
extends beyond its shoreline to the protection of
its beautiful coral reefs, the government having
created four preservation areas encompassing all
of the island’s teeming reefs. It is worth noting that
non-motorised watersports such as snorkelling

FOUNDER/CO-OWNER, THE GEEJAM COLLECTION
From pop-culture impresario to late-blooming
hospitality mogul, Jon Baker’s contact list reads as
a who’s who in celebrity circles and he is applying
his debonair-brand of magic to a little-visited
corner of Jamaica. Port Antonio is his ‘paradise
on earth’ where pristine beaches are lapped by
crystalline waters and framed by lush rainforest,
and is the sublime location for The Geejam
Collection hotels – Trident Hotel and Geejam.
Discover the dramatic beauty of the High Atlas Mountains in a uniquely
traditional way with one of the hotel’s resident mules – Peppermint
or Paprika. Pass through eucalyptus and olive groves and traditional
Berber villages before climbing to the peak of the mountain to discover
spectacular panoramas. Trek back to the village and visit a traditional
Berber house for tea – a true cultural experience. If two wheels are more
appealing, enjoy guided mountain biking trails. The dramatic scenery a
memorable backdrop to your adventure; steep cliff faces and imposing
peaks give way to green terraces and tiny villages stuck to the arid
mountain sides.

IF YOU WERE TO HOST A DINNER PARTY AT TRIDENT, WHO
WOULD YOUR IDEAL GUESTS (DEAD OR ALIVE) BE AND WHY?
Vivienne Westwood, Malcolm McLaren, Robert

Chris Blackwell, Lee “Scratch” Perry, Kate Moss
and Naomi Campbell – Eclectic potpourri of icons
today and in recent years’ pop culture, who have
all had a connection to Port Antonio at some point.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE ELEMENT OF THE RESORT AT
TRIDENT/GEEJAM/PORT ANTONIO?
Trident because of the classic, modern and elegant
feel to it and the jazz at Mike’s Supper Club.
Geejam is extremely private, set in the rainforests,
yet is undoubtedly linked to everything music with
the recording studio housed on the same property.
Port Antonio – this is the original Jamaica;

TELL US ABOUT YOUR DESIGN INSPIRATIONS FOR TRIDENT AND
WHAT YOU DID TO ACHIEVE YOUR VISION
I identified very talented young Jamaican
architects from the local university. I then travelled
with them to some of my favourite hotels in Miami,
New York and London to give them an idea of
the lifestyle vision I had for the Trident. We then
jointly created an elegant, contemporary Caribbean
design that has influences of mid-century roots of
the region, as well as creating modern elegance in
a natural setting.
TELL US A SECRET ABOUT YOU OR TRIDENT/GEEJAM
Prior to Geejam becoming a private hotel, the
Sanwood villa hosted Audrey Hepburn and her
son for many summer holidays.
WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU WERE GROWING UP?
I wanted to be a Photographer or Fashion
Designer. My inspirations were Vivienne
Westwood, Malcolm McLaren and Andy Warhol,
to name but a few.
MOST EXTRAVAGANT REQUEST?
A group of guests wanted to create a story and
engage in an island-wide treasure hunt.
WHERE IN THE WORLD DO YOU FEEL HAPPIEST AND WHY?
New York. I know the city really well and apart
from Port Antonio, it has been my main base since
my early twenties.
WHO WAS LAST IN THE RECORDING STUDIO AT GEEJAM?
Florence + the Machine, Alicia Keys and
Sean Kingston.

Shangri-La’s Rasa Ria

Borneo. The mention of this jungle island evokes images of
a steamy mesh of tropical foliage with adorable primates dangling
nonchalantly from swaying branches. Exploring the untouched
rainforests and the mangrove-edged rivers of this remote destination is
a must, and Shangri-La’s Rasa Ria Resort is perfectly positioned to be
your luxury base for outdoor adventures.
Nestled between forested hills and the expansive Pantai Dalit beach, Rasa
Ria allows easy access to the island’s incredibly rich natural environment.
Accompany one of the rangers to observe orang-utans in the resort’s own
nature reserve; further afield, visit the Sepilok Orang-Utan Rehabilitation
Centre to see orphans being nursed back to health and taught how to
forage for their own food. Take the opportunity to adopt one of these
astonishingly gentle creatures and help with their rehabilitation.
Trek through the tropical lowland dipterocarp forest; macaques, red and
silver leaf monkeys and dozens of beautiful birds reside amongst giant
trees that are over 30 million years old. Climb mighty Mount Kinabalu,
where the wilds are alive with the sound of squawking parrots; go on
a dawn drive to watch turtles hatching on a secluded beach; or join a
nocturnal animal watch, with the chance of encountering indigenous
species like the sambar deer, civet cat and slow loris.
Maxine Roberts, Head of Marketing regales, “Photographing the nature
reserve from the viewing platform was mesmerising: cheeky Proboscis
monkeys edged along tree limbs to try and steal the orang-utans’ food;
TenTen, the youngest, nearly toppled and clung onto the ranger, with
whom she clearly had a strong bond. A very endearing – and rather
comical – moment!”.

Located on South Africa’s spectacular Garden Route, Conrad
Pezula is set amidst the ancient indigenous forests, mountains, lakes and
pristine beaches of the prestigious Pezula Private Estate, the ideal base
for outdoor adventure.
Mauritius is at the pinnacle of tropical island bliss; an azure
lagoon brims with colourful marine life and magnificent coral reefs,
icing sugar sands are shaded by casuarina trees – the perfect setting
for beachside relaxation. However, for the more active, Four Seasons
Resort Mauritius at Anahita has an array of both land and water-based
activities – with the Ernie Els Signature golf course a definite highlight.
No visit to Four Seasons Golf Club Mauritus at Anahita would be
complete without stopping to say hello to the giant Aldabra tortoises
next to the green on the 9th hole. Over 100 years in age, Gromomo is the
large male tortoise, who lives here with Ticolo, his female companion.
Join a guided hike through the midst of Pezula’s forests or take to the
water in a canoe and paddle up the estuary. Alternatively, enjoy the
dramatic scenery by horseback, the best way to carry you to the summit
of the surrounding hills to view the natural splendour of the bay. After
a day of outdoor exploits, return for a soak in the heated outdoor pool
overlooking the magnificent Knysna lagoon and the commanding

In addition to golfing pursuits, bicycles are available to explore the 64

Amankora, Bhutan
With its spectacular location in the Himalayas between Tibet
and India, Bhutan is one of the most intriguing kingdoms of the modern
world. Yet, whilst the Kingdom of the Thunder Dragon sits atop many
travellers’ wish-lists, it is notoriously tricky to visit; only those booking
through tour operators like Carrier are allowed visas meaning
independent travellers cannot get in. This arguably adds to the allure of
this spiritual country and reinforces the value placed on the ancient
traditions and culture by its people.
An Amankora journey through Bhutan will let you experience first-hand
the legendary hospitality and open-hearted warmth of its people, who
famously measure Gross National Happiness. Aman’s five secluded and
inspiring lodges have been conceived as stylish places from which to
fully explore one of the last mountain cultures on earth.
All are found in the most magical and spiritual of settings. After exploring
the capital Thimphu, a dramatic drive over Dochu La Mountain Pass
drops you into the beautiful Phobjika Valley, where Amankora Gangtey
nestles. Amankora Bumthang lies on the edge of Bumthang town opposite
an old palace; a small suspension bridge floating above a gently flowing
river takes you to the colourfully decorated Punakha lodge – the nearby
monastery is a must-see. Then to the largest of the five lodges, Amankora
Paro, from which Tiger’s Nest Monastery can be explored and views
across to the snow-capped Mount Jhomolhari and beyond literally take
the breath away.

There are no roads to this pristine

The Estate features one of the top three beaches in South Africa,
secluded Noetzie Beach, where dusky river waters meet the azure Indian

of the lagoon, the rugged ochre rocks and the thundering breakers that
roll-in row upon row. The area is also renowned for bird watching and
home to over 130 different species. Whale-watching is a highlight; if
you are here between July and November, you could be lucky enough to
witness the majestic Southern Right whale basking in the coastal waters
of Walker Bay.
A one-time sugar plantation on the island’s east coast, the rugged
Bambou Mountain provides a spectacular backdrop for the 18-hole,

holes – the glossy greens contrasting wonderfully with the sapphire
hues of the sea – and is loved for its playability. This versatility is a feat

TRENDING: PHUKET
Natural beaches and jungles, spectacular
scenery and azure blue sea awaits you at
Asia’s most popular beach destination.
From backpacks to barefoot luxury
We take a look at Phuket’s leading resorts as the island commands attention once again.
Initially on the map for its tin-mining, Phuket
has developed into beach holiday nirvana
for families and couples alike. In the first
six months of the year, Thailand’s busiest
and largest island has seen a 27% increase
in international tourist visitors compared to
the same period in 2012. And it is the luxury
end of the market that is thriving. Over the
last 25 years, the island has evolved from a
backpacker’s haven into a high-end paradisiacal
playground for the jet set. Now home to many
luxury offerings, one of the most difficult
decisions is choosing where to stay.
Aman’s flagship property, Amanpuri, was
responsible for the arrival of high style when
it opened in 1988 and still warrants its leading
status within the pantheon of luxury Asian
retreats. With a name meaning ‘peaceful place’
and a location amidst a beautiful coconut
plantation on Pansea Beach, this property
excels in relaxation and discreet luxury away
from the madding crowd. Each pavilion and
villa blends seamlessly into the landscape;
personal service, fine cuisine and recreational
facilities are exceptional.
Anthony Lark, the gentleman responsible
for making the Amanpuri name synonymous
with ultra-luxury retreats, refined and honed
his experience to create Trisara, almost a
decade later. Set over a private bay along the
less developed north-west coast, this resort
raised the benchmark for super secluded
sophistication. The accommodation is the
highlight here. A beautiful collection of one to
five bedroom Pool Villas, Suites and Residences
boast some of the most breathtaking views and
come complete with generously sized infinity
pools that seemingly pour onto treetops. You
might not want to leave your villa, but then you
don’t need to; indulge in the resort’s speciality
of in-villa barbecue dining or opt for a spa
treatment upon the deck.
Another contender for finest resort is
Banyan Tree Phuket, within the integrated
resort of Laguna Phuket. In the mid-nineties,
the founders of Banyan Tree created the first
‘all pool villa resort’ in the world and were
also the pioneers of Asia’s tropical garden spa
concept. It is, therefore, little surprise that this
property undoubtedly has the best range of pool
villas in Thailand. Guests have the best of both
worlds; revel in privacy or take advantage of all
the leisure options available, such as the scenic
18-hole golf course.
Those looking for private living at its most
opulent will have their every wish fulfilled at
Double Pool Villas by Banyan Tree Phuket.
Separate to the main resort, this is boutique
villa living par excellence. Often described as
the pearl of the Andaman, this idyllic enclave
rests by the sun-kissed sands of Bang Tao
Beach. The villas themselves are spacious and
utterly state of the art. Boasting the ubiquitous
‘double pools’, your bedroom feels like it is
floating on its own private island surrounded by
a wading pool; the second is a 15 metre infinity
pool with built in Jacuzzi. To top it all off, your
personal villa host tends to your every need
from arranging a private in-villa dinner to a spa
treatment by the world renowned Banyan Tree
Spa therapists.
This November will see a new competitor
amongst Phuket’s leading resorts: super-luxe
Point Yamu by COMO. Set above Phang Nga
Bay, this is the iconic location where James
Bond film The Man with the Golden Gun was
filmed. See page 08 to discover more.
GETTING THERE:

feature of the design. The structures are
commanding and in proportion with the
scale of the natural environment, yet provide
an intimate setting from which to view and
appreciate the landscape. Each of the 34
suites offer a collapsing wall that opens up
to these immensely impressive vistas.

butlers on board to tend to your every whim, gourmet cuisine and fine Cape wines, you can
experience the magic and mystery of Africa in quintessential elegance. Voyage from the Mother City
of Cape Town, cradled by the imposing bulk of Table Mountain and Devils Peak, to the ‘Jacaranda
City’ of Pretoria; the one night train journey a perfect addition to any South Africa itinerary. The
vistas from the picture windows offer panoramas of the exotic South African wilderness; glide past
vineyards and charming colonial towns, observe grasslands of the gold-rich Highveld to the haunting
barrenness of the Great Karoo. Enjoy a complimentary night in a luxury hotel in Cape Town or
Pretoria to begin or end your rail safari in style. The iconic Blue Train provides a vision of timeless
Africa where you can savour the extraordinary landscape.
DRAMATIC CANADIAN SCENERY
The Rocky Mountaineer
Breathtaking scenery of glacier-fed lakes,
majestic mountains and wild rivers; the
routes of the Rocky Mountaineer through
the dramatic backdrop of Western Canada
loom large among great train journeys of the
world. A selection of routes are on offer, and
whichever one you choose you can be sure of
the same reaction: Wow. Sales Consultant,
Zoe Dodd travelled in the GoldLeaf Service on
the ‘Journey Through the Clouds’ route which
travels between the modern and vibrant city of
Vancouver and the craggy wilderness of Jasper.
“A true sense of ceremony pervades the
atmosphere at the Rocky Mountaineer Rail
Station. A musician sets the convivial tone as
he plays a grand piano nestled in the corner
and coffee is served as check-in takes place.
Ready to embark on our rail expedition, a kilted
bagpipe player accompanies us onto the waiting
train and, as we pull out of the station, Rocky
Mountaineer staff wave us on our passage.
A gourmet breakfast is served as we journey out
of the city, the buildings of Vancouver giving
way to glossy green fields with the promise of
snow-capped mountain peaks in the distance.
Venturing up to the glass-domed upper level
of the GoldLeaf coach, I was overwhelmed by
the vastness of nature; the ruggedly beautiful
scenery stretching into the distance.
Travelling at a relaxed pace, every opportunity
is taken by the knowledgeable Rocky
Mountaineer Hosts to point out must-see
views. The Canadian wildlife doesn’t disappoint
– sliding past towering evergreens, a bald eagle
perches on a branch, master of all he surveys;
launching into the seemingly infinite blue sky,
he glides majestically down to an azure glacial
lake. There is no better place to witness Black
bears prowling in their natural habitat, elk and
moose grazing by a crystal clear river or goats
traversing mountain passes.
ARCHETYPAL ROMANCE
Venice Simplon-Orient-Express
Train, London to Venice
Step aboard the blue and gold carriages of the Continental Wagon-lits
and step back in time to a world of romance and luxurious adventure.
Emblematic of the golden age of rail travel, each carriage has been lovingly
restored to the glory of their 1920s heyday. Settle back and relax in your
opulent cabin whilst a dedicated steward attends to your every need.
Renowned for its culinary standards, Chef Christian Bodiguel and his
skilled team create exceptional cuisine in the kitchens. Fresh ingredients
are sourced en route – lobsters from Brittany, saltmarsh lamb from Mont
St Michel and juicy tomatoes from Provence. Watch the Chef select the
finest produce at stops along the way. Savour delicacies in the unique
ambience of one of the three beautiful restaurant cars; the Lalique glass
panels of the Cote d’Azur, Etoile du Nord with its beautiful marquetry or
L’Oriental, decorated in distinctive black lacquer. Retire to your private
cabin and be lulled to sleep as the train glides through the night.
Such visual excitement works up an appetite so
we retire back downstairs to the dining room for
an impressive three course lunch. Cuisine on
the à la carte menu is prepared with the freshest
ingredients, many of which are locally sourced
– like the signature wild British Columbia
sockeye salmon and the Alberta beef short ribs.
Awaken to the dramatic scenery of the Swiss Alps and enjoy a private
breakfast. A leisurely morning taking in the ever-evolving landscape
culminates in further sartorial pleasure as you enjoy a three course lunch
whilst passing through the magnificent Italian Dolomites before arriving
in the floating city of Venice.
Such attention to detail in the presentation of
these delicacies leaves me wondering how they
achieve such outstanding levels of presentation
in a moving galley kitchen on the train.
Postprandial viewing is a delight. My ultimate
tip for this trip is to never let your camera leave
your hand as Mother Nature puts on an
awe-inspiring show, each snapshot more
breathtaking than the last.”

HOLDERS SEASON IN BARBADOS
by Mark Palmer, Travel Editor, Daily Mail
WINTER EXPLORATIONS
Last winter was pretty special with above average levels of snow in many parts of Europe and the
excellent snow conditions allowing for an extended season. With snow already falling in Vail, there
are signs of another good season to come for 2013/14.

Iceland - A Personal View
LIZ GOODWIN, PRODUCT CO-ORDINATOR
Swaying palm trees, swinging
hips and swish hotels in
bountiful Barbados
“You won’t be sitting down for long”, said the
teenager checking our tickets. He was right.
Within minutes of Kanda Bongo Man (pictured
right) and his eight-piece band taking to the
stage, we were swinging our hips, shaking our
heads and making wild gestures with our hands.
It can’t have been a pretty sight, and then
Kanda Bongo Man’s two slinky dancers in
teeny-weeny bikinis wiggled into the spotlight
and the whole place went crazy. I was so overexcited that on draining my rum punch in one
go I dared ask my wife to fetch me two more.
She wasn’t budging and I couldn’t blame her.
It was the first night of the Holders Season
and the last night of our glorious week’s stay in
Barbados. The Holders music festival is such
a joy that we felt short-changed to have got
there only once. But it happens every year (next
year 22nd March – 5th April) and is as good a
reason as any for jetting off to this unbeatable
Caribbean island.
Another is that you get two for the price of
one. That’s two unique experiences within
20 minutes of each other. On the stretch near
the airport and all along the west coast, the
Caribbean sea is warm and calm, the shoreline
a little cluttered, the mood variously lively
and sophisticated; on the eastern side, the
Atlantic Ocean is rumbustious, uninviting for
swimmers, with sleepy villages and working
farms. And wherever you go there are adorable
chattel houses, shabby roadside bars and
confident, warm people who still seem to love
the British, however unworthy we might be of
their affections.

Iceland is new to Carrier’s
programme this year. Reached
by a short flight from the UK, it
is easy to get to this enthralling
destination perched on the
edge of the Arctic – even if you
just have a long weekend to spare.
WHERE TO STAY:
Treasure Beach
Tucked away on a pristine stretch of white
sands on Barbados’ celebrated Platinum Coast,
Treasure Beach (pictured below left) has a
long standing reputation as the island’s leading
boutique hotel. A horseshoe of 35 suites nestle
in sub-tropical gardens around an inviting
pool, just steps from the shoreline. Recently
renovated, their décor strikes the perfect
balance between island charm and understated
luxury. Think coral stone walls, ceramic tiles
and exposed wooden beams together with
the latest high tech amenities. Each suite also
benefits from its own living room, generous
sized bathroom and private furnished patio.
There are also three individually decorated
deluxe suites with private plunge pools.
The hotel’s spa suite offers another touch
of luxury. Unlike a conventional spa, guests
enjoy exclusive use of the facility during their
treatment. Another big plus of a stay here is
the hotel’s location, just a 10 minute drive from
the legendary Sandy Lane golf course; the
concierge will be happy to arrange tee times.
A wide range of watersports are available
direct from the beach and guests enjoy
complimentary use of snorkelling equipment.
Naturally being a boutique hotel you’ll also
get to experience some of the finest Bajan
hospitality. Richard’s Bar is reputed to serve
the best rum punch on the island and Kathy’s
restaurant offers a daily changing menu
celebrating the best seasonal produce.
I stayed in the colourful city of Reykjavik with its
bustling working harbour, an attractive mix of small
painted houses, Icelandic designer boutiques and a
futuristic glass opera house. Whale watching trips
also depart during the summer months.
Driving out of Reykjavik, it feels as if you are in the
depths of the Icelandic wilderness. This makes the
city a great base for exploring the incredible sights of
South West Iceland. Some of my highlights were...
> Beautiful waterfalls at every turn – my favourite
being Gullfoss, which is comparable to Niagara Falls.
> Thingvellir National Park – you can walk alongside
the immense North American tectonic plate before
crossing the rift to the Eurasian plate on the other side.
> Driving up into the mountains to catch a fleeting
glimpse of the Northern lights (pictured below).
> A delicious meal of lobster tails in the Rauda Husid
(Red House), a wonderful restaurant in the sleepy
fishing village of Eyrarbakki.
> Snowmobiling on the Langjökull glacier, speeding
through the ice and snow is spectacular and hairraising in equal measure.
> Views of volcanoes on one side and the sea on the
other, as you tear up the sand banks by Super Jeep,
through streams and across snow drifts passing a
derelict plane and old whale skeleton hidden in the
contours of the lonely black sands.
WHAT’S NEW:
December will see the unveiling of three
eagerly awaited openings. W Hotels
first alpine escape, W Verbier, promises
daring design and stylish rooms, with a
thrilling social scene mirroring action
packed days on some of Europe’s most
exciting slopes. GHM will also debut its
first ski resort, The Chedi Andermatt
nestles in the Urseren Valley. Finally,
L’Apogée Courchevel enjoys an
outstanding location with private ski-in
ski-out access to the slopes.

SHACKLETON CENTENARY:
2014 marks the 100th anniversary of
Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Trans-Antarctic
Expedition. Although ultimately a
failed journey, it is recognised as an
epic feat of endurance and has inspired
generations of adventurers. Discover
this remote and remarkable destination
on a 12 night cruise aboard Silversea’s
Silver Explorer. Embark at Buenos
Aires before navigating through the
spectacular ice formations of the
Antarctic Peninsula.

PRIVATE HOT AIR BALLOON RIDE
OVER TUSCANY
During a honeymoon tour of Italy, this couple
wanted a romantic experience to remember.
I organised a private tour where they were
welcomed with a Prossecco toast before rising in
their private hot air balloon to watch the sunrise
over the magnificent Chianti region – an area
with lots of green hills, little villages and plenty
of Tuscan charm. A really unique occasion.
A FEAST OF FAMILY ACTIVITIES
IN BALI
I was asked to create an itinerary to entertain all
members of a family of four. I arranged for them
to take part in a cookery class incorporating a
trip to the local market. This was followed by an
afternoon bike ride through the rice paddies that
Bali is so renowned for. The next day, a morning
was spent white water rafting on The Ayung River
before heading off on an afternoon Elephant
Safari to witness the largest herd of rescued
Sumatran elephants in the world.
TANDEM SKYDIVE IN NEVADA
Our clients wanted to experience all that Nevada
had to offer in the skies above the glitz of Las
Vegas. I arranged for them to do a tandem skydive
in Nevada’s largest skydiving aircraft. Two miles
above the earth is the best vantage point to take in
the views of Mount Charleston, Red Rock Canyon
before launching yourself into the skies for a
memorable breathtaking experience.
