STUDENT COUNCIL NEWS
The Student Council has recently welcomed six new Year 10 Student
Councillors. Staff and students were asked to vote and students were ranked in
each group. These rankings were then added together to find the top six
students.
Mr Phil Chadwick, Head of The Arts/REO Program Coordinator
Congratulations to Hilmi Abdul Hanif, Kateryna Bunyeva, William Cook,
Mackenzie Edmonds, Jasmyn Hesford and Jaide Redwood.
During the last week of term we will hold our annual Johnno's Got Talent, Talent
Quest. Last year the competition was strong and we expect it to be the same
again this year with 14 acts entering. John Forrest will showcase instrumental,
dance, drama and vocal acts. The lure of the $200 winning prize money
has certainly been an incentive.
Our final activity this term will be a slave auction event which will take
place on Thursday and Friday of the last week. In order to raise money to
run activities and contribute to the College environment, we will be
auctioning a selection of staff and students to the highest bidders. ‘Slaves’,
or as we like to call them, Johnno's Little Helpers", will be available to their
buyers during Friday lunchtime to carry out such tasks as finishing
homework and if the winners are lucky enough to be bought by the Phys
Ed Department, cleaning out their store rooms!
We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the students and staff
for supporting our ventures during this year.

EXAMS
Weeks 5, 6 and 7 of this term were extremely busy with all year groups sitting
for Semester 1 Examinations. In recent years we have introduced examinations
across all year groups with the aim of students becoming accustomed to the
process of preparing and sitting for examinations before having to experience
the pressure of Senior School examinations.

OLNA (Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessment) is a new series of
assessments introduced in 2014 for Year 10 students. From 2016, students will
be required to have met a minimum standard of literacy and numeracy in order
to be awarded WACE (graduation) at the end of Year 12. This standard can be
met by achieving Band 8 or better in Year 9 NAPLAN testing.
For students who do not meet the standard in Year 9, opportunities will be
available via the online testing that will be held twice per year during Years 10,
11 and 12. The first instalment of these OLNA tests was held during March with
many of our Year 10 students meeting the standard. Those who have not yet
met this standard will have another opportunity to sit OLNA tests in September.

MUSIC NEWS
Term 2 began for the senior music students with the Music Camp at Ern Halliday
at the end of Week 1. It was three days of intensive rehearsals for this year’s
performances and was broken up with lots of food and evening activities. Our
instrumental teachers, Elizabeth Lyon and Geoff Connor, joined Mayuka Juber
and Stephanie Parr in conducting rehearsals with our students. Phil Glossop
was again our bus driver, general helper and quiz master extraordinaire. The
students amazed us with their progress over the time and their commitment in
giving up their weekend to work hard spending up to eight hours each day rehearsing.
Camp concluded with a concert for the parents,
which showed just how much work the students
had done over the weekend. There were
performances from the Senior and Swing Bands,
Percussion Ensemble and Chamber Choir.

Patron Assembly
On Tuesday 24 June we had a special assembly to induct clarinetist Ashley Smith
as our new Music Program Patron. Ashley attended John Forrest Secondary
College from 1997 to 2001 and has gone on to enjoy an international career as a
performer and composer. Ashley is Artist in Residence at the University of
Western Australia where he was also recently
appointed an Assistant Professor position as the
Head of Winds and Contemporary Performance.
We are honoured that Ashley has agreed to
become our patron. He has already been
involved in the College, having performed for
our 50th Anniversary Concert in 2012 and
conducted some master classes with our senior
school students.

overall. The competition was held at the end of
Term1. You can hear the boys’ latest tracks on
the Triple J Unearthed website.
During the assembly Ashley spoke about what
he would tell his high school age self about what
was important about school and life. He
performed one of his own compositions, which
was spellbinding, and really showed why he has
earned such an international reputation. Les

DANCE NEWS
On Friday 20 June, students studying Dance 2A/B had the pleasure of watching the internationally acclaimed
Sydney Dance Company‘s production “2 One Another” performed at His Majesty’s Theatre.
Featuring some of the best dancers in the country, 2 One Another was an exuberant celebration of the power
of movement from a choreographer and a company at the height of their powers.
The students enjoyed watching this performance and enjoyed the experience of being able to see a
professional contemporary dance company and gain a greater understanding of the skills and techniques.

AFL FOOTBALL AT JOHN FORREST
Senior School Girls
The senior school girls AFL team made a good start to their season winning
60 to 2 against Ballajura Community College. Some strong passages of play
throughout our midfield provided endless opportunities for our forward line to
score. Hard hitting tackles from Shannan Rene` and new comer Katelyn Andrus
were highlights of the game as was the continuous running game and
partnership of Moesha Cooper and Kyeisha Strange. Unfortunately we lost the
next two games and were unable to progress through to the finals play offs.
However a lot of fun was had by all students. The girls even had a surprise visit
from some West Coast Eagles players! Hayley McKee, Physical Education Teacher

The Year 8/9 Boys’ AFL Team competed for the Jakovich Cup in Term 2. They

On Friday 2 May John Forrest Secondary College
held their annual Cross Country Event.
Placing first or second in the Year 10 carnival provides the opportunity to
compete in the SSWA Lightning Carnivals State Championships on Tuesday 5
August at the State Basketball Centre. John Forrest Secondary College teams
compete well at this event, always finishing in the top four State schools. This
year we are confident they will do the same against tough opposition in Darling
Range Sports College and Melville Senior High School.

lacking in Year 9s and it was a credit to the team considering the number of
Year 8s who were often outsized by the competition. The team should show a
massive improvement for next year. Best players were Tyler Lehner,
Liam Walton, Adam Viska and Taj Jones.
Senior School Boys
The senior school boys began their season really well with most students
believing that they could go through to the next phase of the competition.
However their hopes diminished when, after leading most of the third game,
they lost in a tight encounter with Cunderdin who physically got the better of
our boys. Unfortunately this loss was enough to ensure that the team did not
progress to the next phase of the competition. This year’s team included only
three Year 12s and, like the lower school boys, they were often outsized. This
team should also show an improvement for next year. Best players were
Jarrah and Lyric Duckett, Giles Irakoze, Tark Wantee and Tyler Bolton.
Reece Phoenix, Physical Education Teacher
Cara Edmonds and Janice Steven competed in a field of 232. Cara and Isabella
finished in the top 25% and Jessica, Monique and Jessica in the top 50% of their
group which were good performances given the number of competitors in each
race.
The Year 8 boys – Liam Love, Steven Quach, Cameron Todd and
Gabriel Riquelme, competed in a race of 169. Gabriel gave former state
representative athletes a scare when he proceeded to challenge them
throughout the race and finished an outstanding fourth place. Gabriel has been
invited to compete in up and coming events as part of a State training squad.
Well done Gabriel.
Approximately 100 students entered and were
required to run 3kms around the perimeter of the
college. The conditions were perfect for the event

On Friday 16 May a team of 17 dedicated John
Forrest middle distance runners competed in the
SSWA Inter-School State Championships at
McGillivray Oval near the State Athletics Centre. They were blessed with clear
sunny conditions, great weather for running which made for an enjoyable day.
Our squad of Year 8 girls – Isabella Aristizabal, Jessica Davidson, Monique Fenu,
Year 10s, Mackenzie Edmonds and Vidit Poojary, ran a steady pace together and
made up ground after a pushy start to finish in the top 60% of their group.
Abdi Khalif and Giles Irakoze ran in an experienced and very fast group of 99
sixteen year old boys. They finished just inside the top 50% of their age group.
This event is certainly a character building experience when you have to line up
at the start line with a 100 plus of your peers. A great experience was had by all
John Forrest Secondary College athletes.

TENNIS NEWS
Doubles at Mount Lawley Tennis Club
In keeping with the John Forrest Secondary College community link with Mount
Lawley Tennis Club our students and staff had the opportunity to play with club
members on Wednesday 28 May. This event was organised by
Michael Sutherland, the Local Member of Parliament for Mount Lawley and
Speaker of the Legislative Assembly.
Teachers, students and members experienced a very enjoyable afternoon
playing a round robin of doubles matches.
Well done to the John Forrest Specialist Tennis Program students for being great
ambassadors for the college.
Tennis Match Day Excursion
On Thursday 8 May the Year 8, 9
and 10 Tennis students participated
in a doubles match day tournament
at Mount Lawley Tennis Club.
Students played four rounds in a
round robin format. Each round
lasted 20 minutes and teams tallied
up the number of games won
within the scheduled playing time.
More rounds could have been
played, but unfortunately scattered
showers rained down throughout
the day providing an opportunity
for the players to learn a lesson in
how to squeegee the tennis courts!
At the end of the day two finals
were played to determine the
men’s and women’s doubles
winners. Two Year 8s, Nik Dotlic and Bojan Novakov, played and won against
two Year 10s, Richard Zhang and Phi Dang, in the men’s final. The women’s final
was an all Year 10 showdown with Ke Wen Lim and Jasmyn Hesford playing and

CRICKET NEWS
Cricket Academy Sri Lanka Trip 2014
A very excited group of eleven Year 11 and 12 cricket boys gathered at Perth International
Airport on Saturday 5 April. Our team of eight, together with three boys from Narrogin Senior
High School, set off on the trip of a lifetime.
On arrival at Colombo at 1.00am in the morning we were greeted by our guide Sudesh, bus
driver Eddie, and baggage man Garma, who were to look after us for the next fourteen days.
The trip included cricket games, sightseeing, cultural experiences and, of course, shopping.
The trip had many highlights: the hotels, swimming pools for recovery, free WiFi, meeting
English cricket teams, having our guide, Sudesh, sing Sri Lankan songs to us and excellent food
to name just a few. We even caught the Dockers game live, just for Mr Davis.
The students played six matches, winning one. They learnt how to play in hot humid
conditions against excellent batters and bowlers (they even played against a boy who played
in the U19 World Cup). Their greatest learning curve was playing spin bowling. The best
performers were:

Chris Harris ..................... 20, 64, 35
Euan Melling .................. 19
Callum Merton .............. 4/19
Jeff Willey ........................ Bowled well.
Sightseeing took us to the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage where we walked amongst the
elephants as they came down to the river. Callum Wiggers and Kalem Hayes washed an
elephant while others posed for photos and rode the elephants. We even learnt how to make
paper out of elephant poo!
In Kandy we saw a typical Sri Lankan Cultural show of drumming, dancing and fire walking.
We visited the most sacred place of the Buddhist world, the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relics
of Lord Buddha and also visited Nuwara Eliya where we took in breath taking views of valleys,
mountains and tea plantations (known as Little England). At a tea plantation we learnt how the
tea is picked and sorted and processed to the cup and we all enjoyed a nice cup of tea before
the students spent up on various teas for their parents. The highlight for the students was
shopping at the markets and the tuk-tuk ride down the hill; our drivers were well paid for the
trip.
At the Wild Safari at Minneriya National Park we had a great time riding on the back of the
safari jeeps amongst the wild elephants, monkeys (not students) and water buffalos. We
visited Galle Fort, a world heritage site, and also went to see the Galle Cricket Ground. It was
great to see this famous cricket ground after the tsunami destroyed it. A visit to the Turtle
hatchery at Bentota was followed by a river cruise to the fish farm where there were lots of
giggles when the fish nibbled our feet which proved to be a hit!
Shopping was extremely popular amongst the boys. They visited many gem, clothing and gift
shops and proved that boys know how to spend money! The students were eventually
persuaded to dress in traditional Sri Lankan dress by their tour guide. The boys looked
fantastic as did Mrs Verco in her sari. Many Sri Lankan shirts were worn following this
experience.
On their arrival home the boys could not wait to tell everyone of their wonderful Sri Lankan
experience. They left Perth unsure of what was ahead of them but arrived home with a wealth
of stories, cultural experiences and a far greater knowledge of cricket.
Mrs Verco and Mr Davis would like to thank the parents for helping their sons prepare for this
once in a life time trip. The boys were fantastic ambassadors for the John Forrest Secondary
Cricket Academy and Narrogin Senior High School.
Cricket Academy Students meet their Cricket Idol
John Forrest Secondary College students met their cricket idol Brad Hogg on
28 May 2014 before grilling him on the ABC Drive Program’s Student Press Gallery.
The Student Press Gallery is a regular segment on the ABC’s Drive Program with
John McGlue. Each week students from different schools have the chance to meet
and interview high profile guests.

Liam, Jeff and Jack were invited on to the program as representatives of the John

WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING IN CERTIFICATE II RETAIL SERVICES
Term 2 has been particularly busy for the Year 11s. Students have been learning lots of skills in stock
replenishment, counting money, using scanning equipment and customer service during rosters in the
John Forrest Secondary College Canteen and Library. Both Linda, the Canteen Manager, and
Bernadette Nye, the Librarian, have been pleased with the progress made and assistance given by the
students.
The class and Ms Sinclair have discovered the talents of Sean Hill in training his fellow students to use the
commercial coffee machine. Students have already received wonderful feedback about the quality of the
coffees they are producing. Several students have been impressive whilst practising their customer
service skills around the College when delivering coffee orders.
We have been examining how to minimise loss in a retail environment and students participated in a
rather amusing role play where they were required to manage shop lifters using store procedures.
Zen Watkins particularly embraced each role he was assigned and showed strong skills in this area.
Another activity students have undertaken is developing an eye catching display about careers in retail.
These will be displayed in the library over the coming weeks. Come and have a look and fill out a
feedback form to let the students know how they went.
Retail work placements are underway for most of the class in places like Target, Masters, Price Attack,
Rebel, Jim Kidd and Novo. Two students have already secured casual work as a result of the impressive
skills shown in their placement. All the students are really enjoying their placements and can see the
value of all the retail skills they are developing.
Term 3 will see a special project being developed with the canteen which is very exciting … watch this
space!

Join in the fun and support the College
Monday 4 to Wednesday 13 August (9 nights)
John Forrest Secondary College, in conjunction with Shoji Australia, will be
hosting a group of Japanese students from Shohei Junior and Senior High

are calling on the John Forrest Secondary College Community to assist with the
billeting of the visiting students.
Exchange visits are a wonderful way to increase cultural awareness and develop
cross-cultural communication skills for all participants. It is rewarding and fun
for families to experience another culture, share their guest’s experiences
learning about Australia and form international friendships.
