VERO BEACH MUSEUM OF ART – WINTER 2016 HUMANITIES HUMANITIES SEMINARS AMERICAN MASTERWORKS Susan Rosoff PLEASE NOTE What Level Am I? Choosing a comfortable course level is important for your teacher and your fellow students. For studio courses, we try to encourage students to select the offerings that best fit your skills and experiences, or in certain cases might stretch your talents when you’re ready for growth. If you have any questions about what level course is best for you, please call Ellyn at (772) 231-0707 x116. Registration Deadlines: Because space is limited, students should register at the earliest opportunity in the event a popular course is filled quickly – waiting until the last moment to register may result in disappointment if a course is cancelled due to low enrollment. Consider Tuition Plus! As we attempt to serve the broadest possible public and keep class fees competitive, as with many other community art schools, tuition fees unfortunately do not cover the full expenses of the Museum Art School in offering courses and workshops. On average, the fees charged in tuition cover only 68-75% of the total expenses. Tuition Plus provides a way for students to support the Museum Art School by contributing toward these additional expenses. By making a fully tax-deductible gift in the amount of $100 for each registered course, you can help the Museum Art School continue its community mission of providing the finest studio art and humanities learning experiences for children and adults. Look for the Tuition Plus reminder on every other page. Like us on Facebook! Art School at the Vero Beach Museum of Art Like the Museum too! Vero Beach Museum of Art Follow the Museum on Twitter! See portraits of colonial Americans full of subtle symbolism, and journey with artist/explorers like Frederic Edwin Church and Martin Johnson Heade into great landscapes here and abroad. Understand the mindset of Winslow Homer, join renegade Grant Wood, and connect with Georgia O’Keeffe who responded to a quickly modernizing society. Don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy how these artists and others demonstrated their enormous talent, creating masterworks that still resonate with us today. Seminar meets Wednesday - Friday, January 13 - 15 10:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. (coffee break included) #WW01 $180 ($160 Museum members) Susan Rosoff is the founder and managing member of Susan Merrill Rosoff, Arts and Museum Consulting, LLC. She has received the Briarcliff College Alumnae Award as well as awards from United Arts of Central Florida, the Florida Alliance for Arts Education, and the Florida Art Education Association. THE WORLD OF WOLF HALL Judy M. Pittenger Hilary Mantel’s novels and the BBC series have given history fans the magnificent world of Wolf Hall, the turbulent times of Henry VIII, Anne Boleyn, Thomas More, and Thomas Cromwell. Mantel is intrigued by the fictive nature of received history—the problem of knowing the truth about the past. This seminar will consider the political and religious environment of 16th century England, providing context for Mantel’s novels and the works they have inspired. Seminar meets Monday, January 18 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. (coffee break included) #WW02 $80 ($60 Museum members) THE KING JAMES BIBLE - A CELEBRATION MORE THAN 400 YEARS IN THE MAKING Judy M. Pittenger Whatever our faith or belief, as speakers of English we have been influenced by the power of this translation of the Bible, authorized by King James in 1604. The very rhythm, cadence, and phraseology of modern English resonates with the beauty and majesty of this text. The ringing rhetoric of Lincoln and Churchill is firmly grounded in the sonority of the psalms, the wisdom of Ecclesiastes, the sublimity of the Gospel of John. Paradise Lost, Handel’s Messiah, even “Charlie Brown’s Christmas” are all grounded in this text. Through word and image, we will consider the 405-year history of this remarkable work. Seminar meets Wednesday, January 20 9:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. #WW03 $50 ($30 Museum members) With a B.A. and a M.A. in Modern European History from Stanford University, Judy Pittenger taught history and literature at Roland Park Country School for twenty-two years. In 1991 she was named by the National Endowment for the Humanities as the Teacher-Scholar of Maryland. She has lived, studied, and traveled extensively in England and has taught literature to adults in Oxford University’s Continuing Education Program. In Baltimore she has taught literature to adults for the past decade and also lectures frequently. Register Today: (772) 231-0707 x116 or www.verobeachmuseum.org 1 Join Today! Each presentation will focus on the central insights of one teacher, will be grounded in the work of particular authors, and will deepen awareness and appreciation, not offer an authoritative final answer or an opinion of who is the “greatest.” Each presentation will include an intermission midway for lunch and conversation with other participants in a spirit of companionship. Seminar meets Thursday - Saturday, March 17 - 19 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. (lunch included) #WW08 $230 (Museum members $210) 2 Or individual sessions: Buddha: Awakening from Illusions Seminar meets Thursday #WW09 $110 (Museum members $90) Socrates: The Quest of Wisdom Seminar meets Friday #WW10 $110 (Museum members $90) Jesus: The Word Made Flesh Seminar meets Saturday #WW11 $110 (Museum members $90) Michael Verde grew up in east Texas, where he read so much it alarmed his high school counselor. He graduated with honors from the University of Texas, earned a M.A. in literary studies from the University of Iowa, and a M.A. in theology from the University of Durham, England, where he graduated at the top of his international class. In the English classroom, Michael was named Teacher of the Year in only his third year of teaching, at Lamar University. He is currently finishing a Ph.D. at Indiana University in the area of empathetic communication. 500 YEARS OF WESTERN CULTURE: FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN’T THOUGHT ABOUT IT LATELY Nicholas D. Thomas We all know a bit about the past. We remember the names Cromwell, Locke, Napoleon and Freud. But it’s a bit fuzzy. In a judgment-free, often irreverent atmosphere, Nick will teach you his innovative method to make some sense of what, after all, are just five tiny centuries. By planting a mere five flags in the ground, at 1605, 1700, 1789, 1890 and 1918, you’ll start seeing cultural history in a whole new light – not an endless parade of unattached facts, but a human story that’s easy to remember and will light your way forward. Classes meet January 12 – February 9 Register by Jan 5 Tuesdays, 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. #WW12 $105 (Museum members $85) Classes meets February 16 – March 15 Register by Feb 9 Tuesdays, 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. #WW13 $105 (Museum members $85) Consider Tuition Plus – a tax-deductible way to contribute to the Museum Art School FILM STUDIES KEEPING ON: FILMS ABOUT ART IN THE LONG RUN Warren Obluck In this course we’ll look at some long- term contributors to the arts, both unapologetically elitist and unabashedly popular. Among others, we’ll meet a brilliant concert pianist, a legendary trumpet player, some of the hottest dancers of the 1930s, and a photographer whose work has been helping people understand the world around them since the Sixties. They share a common trait: not only were they once great, they remain great. They’re unforgettable, and so are these films. Classes meet January 5 - February 2 Tuesdays, 1:30 p.m. #WW14 $70 (Museum members $50) Classes meet January 5 - February 2 Tuesdays, 7:00 p.m. #WW15 $70 (Museum members $50) COULD’VE WONS: FILMS THAT ALMOST SNAGGED AN OSCAR Warren Obluck Last spring, a record number of exceptional international movies competed for the Academy Award as Best Foreign Film. Unfortunately, only one could walk away with top honors. That was Ida, from Poland. Of the others, some were shown briefly in theaters, usually without much publicity, and some were entirely overlooked. This course will feature some of the best from last year’s Oscar competition that neither won nor got wide distribution, despite their unquestionable worth. Classes meet February 9 - March 8 Tuesdays, 1:30 p.m. #WW16 $70 (Museum members $50) Classes meet February 9 - March 8 Tuesdays, 7:00 p.m. #WW17 $70 (Museum members $50) TRENDS IN INTERNATIONAL CINEMA: PARTNERS Warren Obluck These films are not precisely about friends. Nor are they about buddies in the traditional Hollywood sense of the term, although some of them do go on the road. So we’ll call them “partners,” individuals sometimes teamed up by chance, individuals working together often despite a certain tension in the air. The stories in these remarkable films occur in places as wildly distinct as Finland, Uruguay, and America. Their humor ranges from slapstick to lighthearted to black, their heroes from rough-hewn to city-slick. Classes meet March 15 - April 12 Tuesdays, 1:30 p.m. #WW18 $70 (Museum members $50) Classes meet March 15 - April 12 Tuesdays, 7:00 p.m. #WW19 $70 (Museum members $50) HUMANITIES HUMANITIES JANUARY – MARCH 2016 OPERA STUDIES KINGS AND EMPERORS Wayne Kleinstiver Kings, Emperors, and Queens are the subjects of many operas throughout opera history. This course will feature operas with kings and emperors in leading roles from the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic operatic periods by Monteverdi, Mozart, Verdi and more. The course will include a brief overview of singing covering ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, Rome, Middle Ages, and the Renaissance; then a short history of opera from its beginnings in Florence, Italy at the turn of the 16th-17th centuries to post-World War I. Classes meet January 21; February 4, 11, 25; March 3 Thursdays 12:30 p.m. #WW20 $70 (Museum members $50) Register Today: (772) 231-0707 x116 or www.verobeachmuseum.org 3 ART FOR HEALTH’S SAKE What is Art For Health’s Sake? A growing body of research demonstrates that a variety of creative engagements can positively impact emotions, attitudes and beliefs, contributing to greater health and wellness for the individual. The arts have long been recognized for their power to bridge differences – connecting individuals of different backgrounds through the shared experience of art, music, literature and movement, thus healing communities as well as individuals. Why Art For Health’s Sake at the Museum? Courses and programs that provide these experiences are centered on the process instead of the product, because it is through a guided process of creative and personal realization that profound changes can be achieved. The Museum embraces all art forms as beneficial in promoting these processes, including visual arts, music, creative writing, movement, and the contemplative arts. YOGA AT THE MUSEUM Himalaya Parker All levels Be creative, aware and renewed. This course emphasizes combining the flow of your breath with movement as we bring health to our whole body, and will include some specific therapeutic movements for each of the joints as well. A guided relaxation completes each session. Students will enjoy the experiences of art and form through paintings and sculpture; as we become more aware of how we both move and rest in the space around us, we become a living art form. The class is open to everyone and will be fun to connect and explore both within our selves and with each other. Pre-register to reserve a space or “drop-in” for single sessions (Drop-in $15 per class). Classes meet January 18 – February 15 Register by Jan 11 Mondays, 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. #WW21 $65 (Museum members $45) Classes meet February 22 – March 21 Register by Feb 14 Mondays, 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. #WW22 $65 (Museum members $45) 4 ART THROUGH THE 5 SENSES: A YOGA JOURNEY Elise Mahovlich All levels Experiencing art usually means reacting to what we see, then moving on. To have a greater appreciation for what an artist is trying to convey requires a deeper relationship with our five senses. Using the ancient system of yoga to tune into what out bodies perceive will reveal how the world around us resonates deeply within us. Each week will focus on one of the five sense organs applying yoga postures to not only enhance our experience of the artwork but illuminate vibrant health to the nervous system (sight), immune system (hearing), respiratory system (smell), digestive system (taste) and the muscular/skeletal system (touch). Students will be guided into posture with clear, precise and easy to follow instructions. No yoga experience in necessary. Students must be able to move from floor to standing poses.
