The 21st annual IDM industrywide public awareness campaign continues to attract more percussion retailers and create new percussion consumers than ever before. More than 100 promotionallyminded percussion retailers through the U.S. registered to be an official IDM dealer, inviting drummers and wannabe-drummers to enter the Roadie-For-A-Day contest, featuring international drummer extraordinaire, Rich Redmond, drummer with Jason Aldean. Over 400 individuals submitted entries while visiting IDM participating retailers or signing up online at PlayDrums.com. At Press time, the PMC Executive Committee was reviewing each of the contest entries and will randomly select a winner, who were hoping to win the coveted opportunity to be Rich Redmond's roadie and experience a full-day of backstage activity and evening concert of a Jason Aldean concert. As a recipient of a NAMM Foundation Grant, the PMC administers specific funding for core programs and activities, meeting the criteria established by the Foundation. This year’s grant award will support the grant application titled, “GET DRUMMING! A Lifestyle Learning Experience Creating Music-Makers for Generations.” The four specific programs covered under this grant-funding umbrella include: The continued success of the P.I.T.S. program reaches students of all ages, background and economics, creating a positive in-school learning experience in playing drums and a percussion instrument by an authorized PMC professional Program Facilitator. During the school year 2015-2016 over twenty-five in-school percussion presentations were conducted during the school day, impacting over twelve-thousand students, teachers and administrations. A recent School Evaluation Report following a Bob Bloom presentation in Connecticut indicated the impact and learning that takes place: “The kids felt so good about themselves after Thursday’s Bob Bloom in-school performance. He is so talented and inspires people because he makes Music fun! It has been a blessing working with Bob this past school year.” — R.H. Enrichment Coordinator, Windham Middle School, Willimantic, CT. •DRUM SET IN THE CLASSROOM (New 2016 program) •PERCUSSION IN THE SCHOOLS •DRUMS ACROSS AMERICA •INTERNATIONAL DRUM MONTH, May 2017 Plans are already in place for allocating funds and implementation of the programs that create new players, grow the market and build public awareness and appreciation for all percussion instruments through positive educational experiences and in-school appearances. NAMM’s Chairman and President Joe Lamond commented, “We value and appreciate the passion and energy of the PMC leadership. We stand ready to assist in your efforts and to help get the word out on your exciting work.” Bob Bloom's interactive in-school presentations bring first-time drumming experiences to children of all ages. Fun and Excitement build interest in playing a percussion instrument. The tour begins this year with the PMC’s three brand new tents and huge updated current membership logo banners. Educationally-minded local area percussion retailers who have active teaching studio capabilities, serve as PMC lesson Lab Tent Hosts and Facilitators, providing each wanna-play visitor a free five minute drum lesson. For many, this is the very first time they have sat behind an acoustic or electronic drum kit. Each PMC hosting percussion retailer provides both electronic and acoustic drum kits, professional teachers and the encouragement to play drums and start private lessons through their store studio. The PMC will capture each free-lesson name and contact info to share with the complete membership. Typically each lesson lab venue provides about 60-80 lessons during the full-day music festival. We thank our retailers who believe in community outreach and support this "get out on the front line" campaign. 2016 participating hosting retailers include: June 30: Town Center Music, Suwanne, GA July 1: Seminole Music & Sound, Seminole, FL July 3: Drummers Only Drumshop, Point St. Lucie, FL July 9: Long Island Drum Center, Hicksville NY July 13: 247 DRUMS, Winchester, MA. July 22: JC's Drum & Music Academy, Rochester, MI July 26: Cascio Music Super Store, New Berlin, WI Promotional drumstick key chains and novelties are provided by PMC members, Vater, Vic Firth, Promark, Zildjian and Paiste for presentation to each first-freedrum-lesson recipient, as a teacher’s “thank you” for visiting the PMC Lesson Lab tent. www.playdrums.com 3 DRUM SET IN THE CLASSROOM becomes an instant success Resulting from the constructive input received from PMC Members, a specific Drum Set curriculum was incorporated in to all Roots of Rhythm classroom teacher workshops during the fall of 2015. This expanded in 2016 and is now a full scale PMC program facilitated by Dr. Craig Woodson. Dr. Woodson states, “Teachers and students wanted to get involved in playing drums as they see in popular music. The acoustic and electronic drum set was a natural evolution for the Roots of Rhythm program. This has been so successful; events now include teacher workshops, all-school assemblies and public events that feature basic learning techniques for the drum set. The curriculum experience includes the various rhythmical playing styles, including simple fills and rhythmic techniques found in jazz, rock and Latin music. Drum Set in the Classroom sessions will show how the drum set can easily be used in combination with hand drums and in drum circles with specific applications for use by teachers, parents and the public. A primary feature of this program is showing and having demonstrator small size sets available so that very young students feel comfortable playing the set for the very first time”. The new curriculum called upon various PMC members to assist with the need for medium and smaller sized drums which included Pacific Drums by Drum Workshop, Yamaha, and Jamm Jr. Kits by Universal Percussion, beginner cymbals packs were provided by Zildjian, Sabian, Dream and Wuhan-Universal Percussion, and a supply of drumheads from Remo, Inc.. Workshops have been conducted in Memphis, TN, Portland, OR and Los Angeles, CA. A full scale workshop itinerary is planned for the fall of 2016 and on into 2017. Details will be posted to the www.playdrums.com website. www.playdrums.com 4 PMC honors founding member Remo Belli Drums Across America gets Program Coordinator To honor the passing of the legendary Remo Belli, a PMC ad saluting and acknowledging Remo’s inspirational career and contributions to the percussion industry was circulated to all media publications and outlets. Mr. Belli was a continuous loyal supporter of the PMC, a founding member of the PMC in 1995 and was most recently featured as a guest panelist at the 2015 PMC All-Members Breakfast Meeting and Panel Presentation. His legacy as an industry leader and visionary will guide and direct all of us for generations. The first half of 2016 brought increased PMC attention and effort in developing this nationwide program, making this accessible to all percussion retailers. Two successful events were conducted in the first five months of this year with more being scheduled throughout the summer and fall. In addition, Katie Bursey (Sabian Marketing Manager) has assumed Program Coordinator responsibilities for this program, ready to explain the program opportunities and benefits in using the PMC Lesson Lab Tents for a regional first-free-drum-lesson event.
