CD-RW (Rewritable)
Rewriteable means that you can use the discs more than once and that the contents of the discs can be
erased and rewritten. CD-RW discs are used just like CD-R discs. To rewrite to a CD-RW disc, an end-user
must erase the entire disc from previous recording and then rewrite and finalize (you can not just add
additional files as needed). CD-RW media is available in the following rewritable speeds: 2X-4X (standard
speed- backward compatible with all CD-RW drives), High Speed 4X-12X, Ultra Speed 16X-24X and Ultra
Speed+ 32X.

All DVD media formats share common parameters for use in a wide
range of personal and professional applications
applications. DVD+/
DVD+/- R formats
are very similar in capacity and speed. The main difference is the
hardware or drive that supports each format. Each DVD hardware
manufacturer has developed their hardware to record using
DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW or DVD-RAM media. With older models,
the media format is specific to the drive type. If you do not use the
appropriate media that the drive/recorder is developed for, the
hardware will not be able to record data or video files and eject
the media. However, with recent models, most manufacturers
have developed DVD drives labeled Dual Format drives which are
compatible with both DVD+R/RW and DVD-R/RW media. Perfect for
DVD content distribution and archiving, Verbatim 16X DVD+R and
DVD-R are the fastest write-once DVD media available.
One of Verbatim’s unique options in DVD media is
the DigitalMovie™ DVD. Offering the nostalgia and
charm of the movie reels that symbolize cinemas
today, Verbatim’s unique DigitalMovie DVD media
puts the fun in recording, viewing and sharing home
movies. DigitalMovie DVDs are premium quality discs
with unsurpassed performance and reliability. Utilizing
Verbatim’s proprietary Metal AZO recording dye,
DigitalMovie DVDs are perfect for backing up DVD
video titles and transferring video tapes to optical
media that won’t degrade over time.
DVD RW
Verbatim DVD RW offers 4.7GB or 120 Minutes of rewritable storage
capacity, superior recording quality, and compatibility for DVD+RW
and DVD-RW writers. Preferred by DVD drive manufacturers,
Verbatim DVD RW utilizes Super Eutectic Recording Layer (SERL),
which minimizes noise during write/rewrite cycles and provides
superior archival stability. Verbatim DVD RW media is compatible
with most DVD-ROM drives. Users can write to the disc in multiple
sessions as long as the disc has not been finalized.
DVD+RW technology is used by consumers for both audio/video
and data storage applications. With multi-session writing
technology, users who have not finalized the disc can quickly add
documents, data and video segments without having to open and
close write sessions. By incorporating the +RW specification for
defect management, manufacturers ensure that data is accurately
written to and read from the disc.
DVD
DVD-RAM (DVD Random Access Memory)
This rewritable format provides 100,000 write/rewrite cycles. DVD-RAM
DVD RAM features random write/read
support, so data, video and audio can be stored and accessed like a hard drive using standard
drag-and-drop techniques. No finalization is required, so users do not have to open and close write
sessions. However, the format specifications that allow these hard drive-like features also render
DVD-RAM media incompatible with most DVD-ROM drives and set-top video players. Single-sided
(4.7GB) and double-sided (9.4GB) media are available in 2X and 3X recording speeds. Most DVD-RAM
media are bare discs enclosed in a cartridge.
DVD+R DL (Double Layer)
DVD+R DL discs offer 8.5GBs of Storage Capacity on a Single-Sided
Disc – No need to flip the disc! The industry’s first Dual Layer (called
Double Layer by the +RW Alliance) media. These write-once discs
have two recording layers, almost doubling the storage capacity on
DVD discs from 4.7GB to 8.5GB on a single side while maintaining
compatibility with most DVD video players and DVD-ROM drives.
This is a recordable DVD9 format – the same as most Hollywood
movie DVDs. A double layer compatible drive is required to burn DL
media. Most current generation DVD burners available today are able
to write to DVD+R DL media.
With outstanding quality and consistent reliability of both recording
layers, Verbatim DVD+R DL 2.4X media has been approved for high
speed burning of up to 6X speeds by almost all high speed Double
Layer drive manufactures. Store up to 8.5GBs of video in as short
as 16 minutes while maintaining compatibility with most DVD video
players or DVD-ROM drives.

of camcorder footage. Samsung and Sony offer a few camcorder
models that support Mini DVD+R DL media. These newer media
formats can capture nearly an hour’s worth of video camcorder
footage. No need to flip the disc during recording, which is required
when using double-sided Mini DVD media.
Like the full size 12cm DVDR DL discs, these discs are fully compatible
with the DVD+R DL and DVD-R DL standards and should be compatible with almost any DVD drive which
can play full size DVDR DL discs, including many standalone DVD players. While existing +R and -R DL
compatible DVD writers can write to this media, at this time no hardware upgrades are available to convert
current camcorders to support this new format (mini DVD+/-R DL media).

eTM Gold Archival Grade CDR and DVD-R discs are
ideal for preserving family photos and important records as well as
critical corporate data. Each disc is manufactured using proprietary
unique dual reflective layer technology (DRL) to maximize both
compatibility and longevity.
Verbatim’s proprietary dual reflective technology is comprised of a
silver layer for broad compatibility and a gold layer for long archival
life. The highly reflective silver layer allows the UltraLife disc to look
like a standard silver disc to CD/DVD burners. This feature provides a
low initial error rate, important for long archival life, and the same drive
read/write compatibility as standard silver-only discs.
The gold reflective layer is naturally resistant to corrosion. The gold
layer overlaps the silver layer and prevents oxygen from coming
through the lacquer layer or edge of the disc and corroding the silver.
Silver oxidation can be a primary factor which limits the lifetime of
CD/DVD media.

LightScribe technology offers consumers and businesses a simple, no-hassle
way to burn professional
professional, silkscreen-quality labels on their CDs and DVDs
DVDs. Using
the same laser that burns data in their disc drives, customers burn their data
as always, flip the disc over, re-insert it into the drive and burn a precise and
permanent iridescent label.
LightScribe Direct Disc Labeling technology requires
three elements:
1. LightScribe-enabled optical disc drive (ODD) – The drive can be either built
into your desktop or notebook PC or an external disc drive.
2. LightScribe-compatible media – Lightscribe CD/DVDs utilize a special
coating applied to the disc surface that interacts with the laser of the
LightScribe-enable disc drive. Consumers can readily identify LightScribecompatible media through the LightScribe logo, found on media packaging
and in the lower hub of each disc.
3. LightScribe-supported software applications – In addition to a label-making
software, you will need LightScribe System Software (This software may be
included with your hardware, or it may need to be installed separately). With
this software, you can create one-of-a-kind designs for your CDs and DVDs
using your own photos, text, and artwork.

Blue Laser – Blu-ray and HD DVD
Mitsubishi Kagaku Media, Verbatim’s parent company is a member of the Blu-ray
Discs Association and the HD DVD development technology group, which means
that Verbatim has first hand access to the latest in Blu-ray and HD DVD technology.
Blu-ray
Blu-ray is the next-generation optical disc format, developed to enable recording,
rewriting and playback of high-definition video (HD), as well as storing large
amounts of data. The recording layer of Blu-ray media is placed very close to
the disc surface. These design features allow the capacity of a Blu-ray disc to be
increased to 25GB (single layer) or 2 hours of HDTV. Because the data lies so close
to the disc surface, Verbatim’s proprietary super hard coating is applied on top of
the recording layer to protect important data from rough handling.
HD DVD
HD DVD (High-Density DVD) is a high capacity storage solution promoted by
Toshiba. A user can record up to 15GB or 75 minutes of high-definition video
on a single side. Each disc contains a recording AZO dye specifically designed
for HD DVD which is highly sensitive to blue laser light, delivering three key
advantages: superior compatibility, read stability, and long life.
BD and HD DVD products can be used for data, audio, photo and video
storage. Consumers will also benefit from other improvements over current DVD
technology including enhanced menu navigation, increased capacity for bonus
features and new interactive capabilities.
