Welcome to Greensboro, North Carolina, where business, education, culture, and recreation thrive! We are
excited to present this annual business and relocation guide designed to highlight Greensboro’s assets. The
Guilford Merchants Association and the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce discovered many years ago that
we are more effective when we work together to create change.
From our strategic location at the intersection of several interstates and major highways, to our vibrant
downtown scene, to our well-deserved reputation as “Tournament Town,” Greensboro offers visitors and
residents alike plenty to do… and it’s easy to get here! Our city is a center for business where many worldrenowned companies have major operations.
In an increasingly knowledge-based, global economy, we are a model for higher education, offering seven
colleges and universities within city limits. In February 2011, leaders of our city’s academic and business
communities launched Opportunity Greensboro: A Business and Collegiate Partnership, to further the
connections between businesses and our colleges and universities. This collaboration focuses on opportunities
to transform our bank of academic learning into commercial success, implementing results-oriented programs
and activities to create a competitive advantage for business growth. Add to that a growing research park and
a vibrant entrepreneurial spirit, and you have a city that is poised for present and future success. Greensboro
offers a fantastic quality of life for all.
We look forward to meeting you, reconnecting with you, and acquainting you with this wonderful city we call
home.
Warmly,
Deborah Hooper

If it takes a village to raise a child, it takes strong partnerships rooted in trust and a firm belief in a single
mission to build a city. For more than 100 years, the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce and the Guilford
Merchants Association (GMA) have worked together to build a prosperous business community and vibrant
quality of life for Greensboro and Guilford County.
The Greensboro Chamber of Commerce was established in 1877 as one of the first groups of its kind in the
state to work for greater opportunities for the business community. Over its 135-year history, the Chamber has
worked as a champion for local businesses while cultivating a more vibrant quality of life. Many local
initiatives got their start with Chamber support, like The Nussbaum Center for Entrepreneurship, HealthServe
Community Health Clinic and the Guilford County Schools’ Teacher Supply Warehouse.
Today, the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce is a champion of free enterprise, helping businesses grow their
profitability in four main ways: by linking them to future customers, connecting them with local resources,
providing education and leadership development training, and advocating on their behalf to improve the local
business climate. The Chamber is a member of the Greensboro Partnership, united with Greensboro Economic
Development Alliance and Action Greensboro to help move our local economy forward.
GMA was established in 1906 as a downtown retail organization and credit reporting body, and has long been
recognized as one of the strongest merchants associations in the country. Over the years, the credit bureau
division of the organization split off into what is now FirstPoint, Inc. The retail association membership
expanded to represent a diverse group of regional industries, including hospitality, consumer services,
manufacturing, nonprofit and government. Mr. J. M. Hendrix, the first president of GMA, stated he was most
proud of his organization’s efforts in building a spirit of fellowship and friendship among the business people
of the city. Today, GMA member services include networking events, training and development programs,
business development and educational programs, business crime prevention programs and marketing support.
GMA and the Chamber discovered many years ago that by working together to create change, we can make a
significant impact. One of the most significant collaborative initiatives was to join with the Greensboro
Jaycees in the 1950s to establish the local Better Business Bureau. The two organizations have also partnered
throughout the decades on numerous projects to support local business, such as Buy Local, the recent One Job
for Greensboro initiative, downtown redevelopment, and legislative advocacy. Promoting a stellar quality of
life for citizens has always been a priority for both organizations. The two organizations frequently come
together to produce premier local business events such as Job Expos and Small Business awards programs. To
learn more about the membership programs offered by these organizations, visit www.greensborochamber.

With its ideal location in central North Carolina – situated at the crossroads of four interstates, major
highways, and the railroad – it’s no wonder that Greensboro, nicknamed “The Gate City”, has historically
been the manufacturing center of the state. Over the years, our economy has evolved to broaden the
employment base, making Greensboro a city where industries of all types are thriving.
In early 2011, Ziehl-Abegg – a global leader in industrial fans, drives, and control technology – announced
plans to establish manufacturing operations in Greensboro, where its North American headquarters were
already located. The company invested approximately $2.5 million to move from its former 50,000-squarefoot facility to a new 100,000-square-foot location on Regional Road and will add 52 new jobs over the next
five years with an average annual salary of $47,577.
In May of 2011, the Volvo Group broke ground on a 40,000-square-foot expansion of its technical center,
representing an investment of $8 million. The expansion will provide additional space for testing equipment,
eight new truck bays, and a metal studio.
In 2010, LabCorp and Ameritox, Ltd. both celebrated grand openings of their new facilities in Greensboro.
LabCorp opened its new billing operations office and will invest $4 million, creating 373 jobs over the next
several years. Ameritox opened a state-of-the-art laboratory facility, investing $26 million and hiring 228
people. “Greensboro was just the ideal location for our second U.S. laboratory facility,” commented Dr. Sue
Brown, Laboratory Director at Ameritox. “The well-trained workforce here, combined with Greensboro’s
central location on the East Coast, fit our needs for our new operations.”
Grocery giant Harris Teeter and Machine Specialties, Inc., a contract machining and metal finishing specialist,
both announced significant expansions in Greensboro and Guilford County in 2010. In addition, Dynamic
Worldwide Logistics, a third-party logistics company based in Kearny, NJ, leased a facility near Piedmont
Triad International Airport to distribute goods for several retailers and manufacturers.
TIMCO Aviation Services Inc., a major aircraft maintenance company headquartered at Piedmont Triad
International Airport, launched a new maintenance support contract with Northrop Grumman in 2010. Under
this agreement, TIMCO made an investment of nearly $2 million for facility upgrades, tooling and equipment,
workforce training, and security enhancements to provide depot support for the U.S. Air Force KC-10
airborne refueling tanker fleet. The contract supports about 200 jobs for a term of 10 years.
Imagine the possibilities of living and working in an area where cutting-edge innovation thrives and a wealth
of new discoveries surrounds you, from university-based research parks to exciting start-up companies.
Boasting a creative, knowledge-based climate and low cost of doing business, the Greensboro area is a top
location for entrepreneurial initiatives.
The Greensboro Partnership Entrepreneurship Initiative (www.greensboroentrepreneur.com) cultivates a
fertile environment for companies in the greater Greensboro area by linking entrepreneurs with the critical
resources they need to be successful and grow. In 2008, the Greensboro Partnership, along with strategic
community partners, began to ramp up the energy and effort behind entrepreneurship as a vital economic
development tool. “The goal of the Initiative is to connect entrepreneurs with the wealth of business resources
in our area,” commented Kathy Elliott, Vice President of Small Business and Entrepreneurship at the
Greensboro Chamber of Commerce. “We represent the individual needs of entrepreneurs and help create
innovative programs, partnerships and possibilities that will transform Greensboro’s economy.”The
Greensboro Partnership Entrepreneurship Initiative sponsors and facilitates several programs throughout the
year in order to help entrepreneurism flourish locally. One of these is Capital Connects, an invitation-only
event held each fall to match accredited investors, angel groups, venture funds and private equity firms with
early stage and growth companies in the Southeast seeking investment capital.
In conjunction with the North Carolina Biotechnology Center, the Greensboro Partnership hosts quarterly Life
Sciences Roundtables to convene life sciences executives around issues impacting this fast-paced industry.
Keynote speakers have included Peter Ginsberg, Vice President of Business & Technology Development at
the North Carolina Biotechnology Center, and Dr. Mostafa Analoui, head of Healthcare and Life Sciences at
the Livingston Group, LLC.Campus collaboration is another strong focus of the Greensboro Partnership
Entrepreneurship Initiative. The GPEI partnered with the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering at
Gateway University Research Park and the North Carolina Department of Commerce to host the 2010
Nanotechnology Commercialization Conference in Greensboro.
In addition, the Greensboro Partnership offers Triad InternNet, a program that connects businesses and
organizations with students through internships. By creating and expanding local entrepreneurial internship
opportunities, Triad InternNet helps area companies build their workforce locally and encourages students to
establish their careers here.
Home to three high research-activity universities, the cutting-edge Gateway University Research Park and
Piedmont Triad Research Park, and many additional colleges, universities, and professional schools within a
30-mile radius, the Piedmont Triad region is a center of advanced education and research. This richness
nurtures new technology development and entrepreneurial spin-outs. With more than 100,000 students in our
region, our workforce is young, well-educated and prepared to work in an ever-changing economy.

Leaders of Greensboro’s academic and business communities have formed Opportunity Greensboro, a
concerted effort to further collaboration between businesses and our colleges and universities. This national
model focuses on opportunities to transform our wealth of academic learning into commercial success,
creating a competitive advantage for business growth in Greensboro. The collaboration will:
•Identify and implement results-oriented programs and activities
•Enable the business community to access the research available in local colleges and universities
•Establish opportunities for academic theories to be evaluated for business applications
One of the first projects the Opportunity Greensboro team has undertaken is to evaluate the potential for a
Downtown University District that will allow local colleges and universities to have a larger presence in the
center city. Elon University School of Law is already located downtown, and four other institutions of higher
education – North Carolina A&T State University, The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Bennett
College, and Greensboro College – are located within one mile of downtown Greensboro. For additional
information, visit www.opportunitygreensboro.com
The Greensboro area is home to an active and exciting local arts and culture scene. Residents and visitors
alike embrace this vibrant community, which is characterized by numerous theatrical troupes, musical and
dance organizations, art galleries and historic sites and museums, as well as an impressive year-round calendar

The Natural Science Center of Greensboro (NSC) is one of the most distinctive family destinations in the city,
offering three great attractions in one place: a hands-on Science Museum, an Animal Discovery Zoological
Park, and a state-of-the-art OmniSphere Full-Dome Theater.
Inside the museum visitors can roam through Dinosaur Gallery and come face to face with a roaring 36-foot TRex model, discover Earth's treasures in the Gem and Mineral Gallery, visit live snakes in the Herpetarium,
and enjoy hands-on learning in Kids Alley. In Animal Discovery Zoological Park, visitors become immersed
in a world of up-close creature encounters featuring tigers, meerkats, lemurs, monkeys, crocodiles, farm
animals and many more! The OmniSphere Theater offers visitors young and old an awe-inspiring full dome,
digital laser and 3D projection theater experience - the state's first.
2010 began with a bang, as the Natural Science Center welcomed a record 292,000 visitors from across the
state and region, and the numbers continue to climb.
Summer of 2011 brought even more excitement to the NSC. HealthQuest, a brand-new exhibit unlike any
human health and biology experience in the nation, opened in June. The exhibit takes visitors on a journey
into personal health that showcases how choices in life impact their major body systems. On July 30, the NSC
opened the blockbuster traveling exhibit Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition, focused on the legendary Titanic's
compelling human stories told through authentic artifacts and room re-creations. In September, the center
broke ground on a new SciQuarium that will feature sharks, penguins, fishing cats, stingrays and fish. This
new attraction, scheduled to open in winter 2012, is part of the NSC's Master Plan Expansion, which also
includes complete renovation of the museum and major additions to the zoo.
Once the plan is complete, the NSC will be home to a modernized science museum, an expanded zoo, a high-
tech planetarium and theater, and a state-of-the-art aquarium. The center is well on its way to becoming a
signature national tourist attraction that will help make Greensboro an even more vibrant place to live, raise a
family, and build a business.
ARTS & CULTURE
On February 1, 2010, Greensboro made national headlines with the grand opening of its International Civil
Rights Center and Museum (ICRCM) in the historic Woolworth building downtown. Fifty years ago to the
day, four North Carolina A&T State University students staged a sit-in at the segregated Woolworth lunch
counter, helping to reignite the nation's civil rights movement. Greensboro's ICRCM is one of only two civil
rights museums in the United States that is located on the site of an actual historic event. For additional
information, please visit the ICRCM online at www.sitinmovement.org.
The Greensboro Historical Museum highlights the city's most indelible moments and shares stories of people
who have made their mark in Greensboro, from centuries ago right through to the present day. Treat yourself,
your family, and friends and discover the dramatic role that Greensboro plays in the story of America. There
are stories of community, of courage and conflict, of hard work and creativity, and celebration, in imaginative
and interactive exhibitions. Located downtown at 130 Summit Avenue, the museum is open daily except
Monday, with free admission. Also stop at the Museum Shop for a unique gift that features history in every
purchase. For more information, visit www.GreensboroHistory.org or call (336) 373-2043.
The Greensboro Children's Museum (GCM) is a hands-on, interactive museum for children, their families, and
teachers. The Museum is designed to inspire learning through play in a fun, energetic, and safe environment
for children up to 10 years of age. The 37,000 square foot facility in downtown Greensboro includes over 20
permanent hands-on exhibits in "Our Town" and a new outdoor Edible Schoolyard that are designed to
stimulate children's imaginations and provide educational play experiences. For additional information, please
visit the Greensboro Children's Museum online at www.gcmuseum.com.
From children to seniors, athletes to outdoorsmen, there is something for everyone when it comes to sports
and recreation in Greensboro, Guilford County, and the Piedmont Triad.
The City of Greensboro Parks & Recreation Department provides unmatched leisure opportunities for
residents and guests by offering preserved open space, well-maintained parks, recreation centers, and a yearround list of programs for people of all ages and abilities. The department operates 3,500-plus acres of land,
which includes:
• More than 170 park sites (neighborhood parks, large regional parks and three beautiful watershed parks
featuring playground equipment, picnic shelters, athletic fields, lakes, golf courses, open spaces and more)
• Four distinct public gardens in partnership with Greensboro Beautiful Inc.
• More than 90 miles of winding trails and greenways in both urban and natural settings
• Six pools (four outdoor and two indoor)
• Ten amenity-filled recreation centers, plus a teen center and senior center
• Four tennis centers and hundreds of courts throughout the city
• Three top-notch sports facilities in the Greensboro Sportsplex, the Simkins Indoor Sports Pavilion and the
Carolyn S. Allen Community Park & Athletic Complex
Guilford County oversees seven regional park sites and 11 miles of public trails in the region as well.
Greensboro is home to the 250-acre Bur-Mil Park (eight picnic shelters, an aquatic center, a wildlife education
center, a golf course, tennis courts and trails) and the 513-acre Southwest Park (hiking trails, a dog park,
picnic shelters, playgrounds, wildlife viewing, open spaces and water activities on Randleman Regional
Reservoir).
Golfers enjoy the challenges at 27 golf clubs and courses throughout the region. The City of Greensboro owns
two public courses – Gillespie Golf Course and Bryan Park Golf Course. Other notable sites include Stoney
Creek Golf Course, Grandover Resort & Conference Center, Starmount Forest Country Club and Greensboro
Country Club.
The area also hosts a medley of fitness centers, athletic associations, organizations such as the YMCA and a
number of exciting sports and recreation events for both spectators and participants. Local, regional and
national golf tournaments are held at scenic local courses, while the Greensboro Coliseum Complex presents a
great sports line-up featuring collegiate basketball regular season games and tournaments. The Greensboro
Grasshoppers baseball team topped off an exciting 2011 season by winning the South Atlantic League
Championships.
For those who want to be a part of the action, local events not to be missed include the City of Greensboro’s
National Trails Day (featuring activities such as hikes, kayak demonstrations, bike clinics and more), various
run/walk events and the holiday favorite WFMY News 2 Piedmont Winterfest. Held from November to
January at Price Bryan Performance Place in Festival Park, Piedmont Winterfest features a 40’x85’ outdoor
ice rink used for public skating, hockey, exhibition figure skating and private parties.

The Greensboro Coliseum Complex is a major asset for Greensboro and the surrounding Piedmont Triad
region. Not only is it the main center of community activity, it is also a leading economic engine in
Greensboro, adding millions of dollars to the local economy annually.
The multi-building complex is located on a sprawling 75-acre site just outside of downtown Greensboro.
Since its opening in 1959, the Coliseum Complex has seen more than 60 million people walk through its
doors, attending 850-plus events each year. These numbers are sure to grow with the addition of four new
facilities on the complex’s grounds.
2011 was a busy year at the Greensboro Coliseum Complex, as it opened the ACC Hall of Champions and
The Terrace in March, and the Greensboro Aquatic Center and White Oak Amphitheatre in the summertime.
These new venues now allow the complex to host an even more diversified array of events throughout the
year, maintaining its position among the top entertainment and sports venues in the U.S.
The opportunities for educational excellence extend well beyond the traditional curriculum at Guilford County
Schools (GCS), the third-largest school district in North Carolina with an enrollment of nearly 72,000 students
in 121 schools.
Students interested in earning college credits while still in high school enroll in the district’s nationallyrecognized Early and Middle College programs. Through partnerships with local colleges and universities
including Greensboro College, NC A&T, Bennett College for Women, Guilford College, The University of
North Carolina at Greensboro, and Guilford Technical Community College, GCS high school students are
able to participate in constructive dual enrollment programs.
The district provides special education for exceptional students at Gateway Education Center, McIver
Education Center, and the new Haynes-Iman Education Center, while alternative learning environments are
offered through the SCALE program in both Greensboro and High Point. In addition, GCS offers the AfterSchool Care Enrichment Services (ACES) program for working parents, specialized programming for overaged middle school students at the High School Ahead Academy, and a number of magnet and choice schools
at all levels as well as traditional programs. These public schools offer specialized instruction and themes
designed to meet the needs of the district’s diverse student population.
A selection of notable private and parochial educational institutions is also available in Greensboro for parents
and students who prefer an alternative to the area’s public schools.

The quality of life discovered in Greensboro and Guilford County is second to none. The area is overflowing
with opportunities for everyone from outdoor recreation, culture, and highly anticipated sporting events to
quality education at all levels and advanced healthcare resources. The gently rolling hills, sparkling lakes,
pleasant climate, and the friendly and positive people who call the Greensboro area home only add to the
appeal.
“Our city truly cares about providing a quality of life to its residents,” noted Eddie Yost, Chairman of
Prudential Yost and Little Realty. “There is no finer place to live than in Greensboro.”
The housing market is diversified in Greensboro and its surrounding communities, offering an excellent array
of choices sure to suit any lifestyle. Young professionals, growing families, and retirees all find a place to call
home. The area features a fantastic mix of home options: modern downtown apartments and condos are ideal
for those wanting to be a part of the area’s lively central district, while well-preserved historic neighborhoods
and newer subdivisions are great for quiet living in close proximity to city conveniences. The community also
offers quality townhome developments and lots of all sizes available for custom home construction.
The affordable real estate market and appealing cost of living are additional benefits of living in Greensboro.
The area does offer sprawling multi-million-dollar estates, but the majority of the market is comprised of
spacious single-family homes at affordable sales prices (median sales price in Greensboro falls in the mid$140,000s, according to the Greensboro Partnership 2011 State of the City Report). In addition, the cost of
living in Greensboro is consistently lower than the national average of 100 (according to the latest ACCRA
Cost of Living Index, Greensboro’s average cost of living is 92.4).
Contact the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce at 336-387-8300 or visit its website, www.
greensborochamber.com, to order a relocation package or to access a list of referred housing and financial
resources.
Adding to Greensboro’s abundance of outdoor recreational opportunities is its Downtown Greenway, a fourmile paved path for walking and cycling being constructed around downtown Greensboro. The first phase of
the Greenway opened in March 2010 and construction of Phase 1a began in April 2011.
“Greensboro stands alone as the only North Carolina city that will have an urban trail that encircles
downtown,” commented Chuck Flink, President of Greenways Inc., a multidisciplinary firm that provides
planning and design for open space, parks, and trails. “The Downtown Greenway will become a signature
landscape within Greensboro in the years to come.”
The Greenway is intended to encourage economic development, promote healthy lifestyles, connect
neighborhoods, and serve as a method of alternative transportation around Greensboro. In 2010, the
Downtown Greenway was selected from more than 200 applicants to receive a National Endowment for the
Arts grant as part of the NEA Mayors’ Institute on City Design 25th Anniversary Initiative. The $100,000
grant will fund a major public art project that restores an abandoned railroad underpass through which the trail
passes.

When it comes to accessing high-quality medical care, Greensboro and Guilford County offer state-of-the-art
facilities and a large and varied selection of physicians and practices. Locally, Cone Health, High Point
Regional Health System, and Novant Health provide a growing list of advanced services and modern
facilities. Together, these outstanding healthcare institutions continue to enhance the health and well-being of
residents in Greensboro and the surrounding Piedmont Triad region.
Cone Health
Cone Health is more than a hospital. With more than 100 locations, including five hospitals, two MedCenters,
three urgent care centers, and 55 doctors’ offices and rehabilitation clinics across five counties in the
Piedmont, Cone Health is an exceptional healthcare network, sharing one overriding and unifying goal to
become a national leader in quality, service and cost in the delivery of healthcare for its patients and the
community.
As the overarching brand for a network of exceptional healthcare services, Cone Health consists of The Moses
H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Wesley Long Hospital, the Women’s Hospital, Annie Penn Hospital, Cone
Health Behavioral Health Hospital, LeBauer HealthCare, MedCenter High Point, MedCenter Kernersville and
various outpatient clinics and programs.
The flagship of the network is The Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital – home to Cone Health Heart and
Vascular Center, the Surgical Orthopedic Program and the Cone Health Neuroscience Center.
According to the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, Cone Health Heart and Vascular Center ranks in the top 10%
nationally in overall heart surgery quality. The Surgical Orthopedic Program is one of the busiest in the state
with more than 1,800 hip and knee replacement surgeries yearly, and the Cone Health Neuroscience Center
offers access to 12 neurosurgeons that annually treat more than 2,000 patients. To house the expanding needs
and programs, the hospital will expand its campus with the new North Tower – a sustainable, LEED-certified
$200 million addition currently under construction.
Across town, a $15 million expansion nears completion at Cone Health Regional Cancer Center. By the end of
2011, a dedicated breast cancer center and a patient education center will anchor the expansion of the campus
of Wesley Long Hospital.
The Regional Cancer Center offers patients access to the latest technology and treatments thanks to its worldclass medical staff and a host of ongoing clinical trials. The Center is home to North Carolina’s first
TomoTherapy unit offering highly targeted and effective treatment of cancer-impacting, complex sites
including prostate, head and neck and some lung cancers where minimizing damage to surrounding tissue is
critical. Later this year, the Center will become one of the first in the country to offer access to the latest in
stereotactic radio surgery technology, another highly targeted and precise radiation delivery system, as part of
opening a new comprehensive Brain and Spine Tumor Program.
When it comes to being a leader in service, the Women’s Hospital tops the list. The hospital consistently earns
top marks in patient satisfaction. It also mixes compassion with advanced care through a level II and level III
neonatal intensive care unit and a high-risk pregnancy clinic.
Cone Health’s fourth hospital in Greensboro is the Cone Health Behavioral Health Hospital, which provides
mental health and substance abuse services to adolescents and adults. Treatment programs are individualized
for those needing an intense course of treatment only offered at a hospital, as well as to those best served by
outpatient programs.
Recognizing that advances in healthcare technology and treatment make it possible to offer high quality
healthcare in more conveniently located satellite offices and outpatient settings, Cone Health is supported by a
network of MedCenters and walk-in clinics that offer a variety of general and specialty practices for the
patient and family. Its MedCenter facilities offer on-site lab and imaging services all under one roof. And
because life is unpredictable, MedCenters also offer walk-in urgent care in Kernersville and a freestanding
emergency room in High Point to handle the patients’ after-hours and emergency care needs.
Cone Health is an integrated healthcare network that embraces patients, encompasses many services and cares
for the communities it serves. Over the past decade, Cone Health has committed more than $500 million into
facilities, equipment and infrastructure, and the network has contributed more than $800 million in
uncompensated patient care since 2001. In Greensboro alone, Cone Health is the largest private employer,
contributing $146 million in charitable medical care in 2010 and an additional $16 million in donations,
training, outreach services and volunteer work.

Greensboro’s strategic location and excellent transportation infrastructure creates efficient local and regional
travel for residents, visitors and businesses. The area, which sits midway between Raleigh and Charlotte, has
established itself as a significant transportation center along the East Coast with its attractive highway access,
public transit, active regional airport, and FedEx Ground, Express, and UPS hubs.
A Network of Highways
The area is well-served by a number of major arterial highways. Greensboro itself is positioned at the
intersection of I-40, I-85, I-73 and I-74 with ready access to U.S. Routes 29, 70, 220 and 421. The NC
Department of Transportation (NCDOT) continues with construction on the Greensboro Urban Loop (I-785/I840), a 44-mile loop around the city that, upon its completion, will handle the area’s traffic flow for years to
come. Approximately 15 miles of the loop remain to be completed. Project details are available at www.ncdot.
