Vol. 14 • No. 3 The Newsletter For Holy Cross Alumni, Parents & Friends SUMMER 2007 Holy Cross Launches Two Premier Academic Programs Science Research World War II and the Holocaust D uring the fall of 2006 Holy Cross initiated two unique academic programs with the intention of providing students with the opportunity to do “in-depth” study in the humanities and sciences. The Science Research Program allows students to investigate an area of their choosing under the direction of specially selected scientist-mentors working in the field. The World War II and Holocaust Program, an interdisciplinary initiative, provides the opportunity for students to gain a deeper understanding of the motivations for intolerance, political domination, war, and genocide. Both programs are unique in that they offer young men the venue to ask their own questions, and actively problem-solve in seeking and arriving at solutions. Loreen McCarthy, Assistant Principal for Academics explains enthusiastically, “This is not an ordinary classroom experience. Students are guided by an entire cast of teachers, mentors, and guides dedicated to providing the environment that will allow them to internalize what they have learned.” Fledgling Research Scientists, Joseph Neggie, Stephen Janneetti, Nairod Woods, Diego Cardoso, Mrs. Cathy Kenny, and Saad Khamisa in the Holy Cross biology lab. Students visiting the Jewish Heritage Museum in New York City: (l-r) John Pagano, Seven Mare, Kevin Smith, Timothy Melville, Kyle Benados, William Rennie, Peter Levantis, Derek Lamacchia, Kenneth Thornhill, Joseph Depperman and Mrs. Lisa Petri. I N S I D E 6 Notes from the Holy Cross Family 10 New Website 11 Upcoming Reunions 18 2008 Hall of Fame PRESIDENT FROM THE Dear Friends of Holy Cross: This edition of Crossroads strives to provide a glimpse of the wonderful things that have occurred during 2006-2007. Unfortunately, space prevents us from reporting everything that made this year memorable: the Concert Band achieving a Silver Medal in the New York State Music Association Festival (as well as the fifteen students who performed solos for NYSSMA); the Florida alumni reunion held in Sarasota (thanks to Bill Burke’61); a successful Varsity Baseball season; student trips to France and Italy during Easter break; Bye, Bye, Birdie, the spring musical; and receiving word from the Vatican that the founder of the Congregation of Holy Cross, the Rev. Basil Moreau, CSC, will be beatified on September 15, 2007 in LeMans, France! All of the above, and more, would not be possible without the support of our donors and volunteers, who in a special way, partner with the administration, faculty and staff as they work to carry out the school’s mission of educating the minds and hearts of the young men entrusted to its care. As I have indicated in the past, tuition covers about 80% of the actual cost of educating a young man at Holy Cross – not including plant and other capital expenses. In order to make this opportunity affordable to our families, the school must acquire the remaining 20% from other sources--Annual Fund, events, major gifts, and foundation grants. It is for this reason that I am grateful to our many supporters. Scholarship Award Ceremony Honors Outstanding Incoming Freshman “Generous Scholarship Founders Make Personalized Presentations” O n Thursday evening, March 21, fifteen members of the Class of 2011 were awarded full and partial scholarships at the Annual Scholarship Award Ceremony. Funding for named scholarships comes from endowments founded by generous donors in honor or memory of a loved one, family member, or an individual that has been inspirational in their lives. Presentations at this unique evening were made by the founders of the scholarship or their family—and most usually include a descriptive biography of the alumni or friend that the scholarship was named after. As a school community, we are saddened by the deaths of four Holy Cross Brothers--Aubert Harrigan, Karl Diemand, Thomas Gallagher and John Chrysostom--who touched the hearts and minds of so many young men over the years. Holy Cross also mourns the death of its alumni and friends who were called to their eternal rest this year and expresses heartfelt condolences to their families. May God continue to bless our efforts as well as each and every one of you who assist in carrying out our mission. Sincerely in Holy Cross, Chris De Marco ‘80 (left) and his mother with Peter Forgione (St. Mel’s School) recipient of the Gino DeMarco ’78 Memorial Scholarship. M ove over Jonas Salk, Albert Einstein, and Stephen Hawking. A team of Knight-scientists are working hard to fill your shoes! Launched during the fall of 2006 after more than a year’s preparation, Holy Cross’ newly established Science Research Program offers the opportunity for a small group of students to each select a scientific sophomores are currently taking part in the program—Saad Khamisa, Joseph Neggie, Diego Cardoso, Stephen Jannetti, and Nairod Woods. (Additional “Knight scientists” will be joining the group for this 2007-2008 school year.) Areas under investigation include Environmental Effects on Autism, Substance Abuse in Adolescents, Focal Glomerular Sclerosis, and the use of Nanotechnology in curing disease as well as providing clean energy. During the spring of each year the school holds a special symposium where young scientists present the progress they have made, providing them with the experience necessary should they eventually wish to take part in Intel, Westinghouse, and other science competitions. Mrs. Kenny is enormously excited about her role in this new program, “One of the greatest benefits of the initiative is that students do a great deal of the research in labs outside Holy Cross.” Mrs. Kenny adds, “They can also accumulate as many as 12 college credits from SUNY Albany for their participation in the program.” Dr. Henry White, who has been honored to be part of it all, stresses the importance of this work. “The lack of interest in science and engineering in the U.S. limits its ability to compete globally. This us why it’s so important that Holy Cross is integrating material sciences into the curriculum at the Stephen Jannetti presents his work on adolescent addiction at the school’s first Science Symposium this May. area to explore over three years under the combined supervision of veteran science teacher, Cathy Kenny, and a renown scientist-mentor of their choosing. In addition, Dr. Henry White ‘83, from the Department of Environmental Engineering at SUNY Stonybrook has served for the past year as visiting mentor and lecturer for the program. Holy Cross is proud to note that five exemplary Holy Cross 4 Dan Bartolomeo ’73, Chair of the Board of Directors with Jim Harden ’69, founder of the Br. Holy Cross is unique because most high schools don’t do this until junior or senior year.” Because of its huge potential, the program has caught the eye of one of Holy Cross’s most distinguished alumni, James Harden ’69, President and CEO of Catholic Health Services of Long Island, who has established the Br. Aubert Harrigan, csc, Endowed Science Research Chair to help support the financial requirements of the program. As part of this endeavor, Mr. Harden has garnered both the financial support and participation of St. Francis Hospital in Roslyn. “St. Francis can gain meaningful experience working with high school students interested in scientific research,” Mr. Harden explains. “This will assist Catholic Heath Services in the evaluation and possible creation of such programs between our other hospitals and high schools within the Diocese of Rockville Centre.” Of course, this is only the beginning! Br. Stephen LaMendola, csc, Holy Cross President, expresses enthusiastically, “It’s exciting and inspirational to see these young men working so diligently. They are truly ‘reaching for the stars’ in a quest for knowledge that could lead them to great discoveries—now and in the future!” Nairod Woods making a presentation on Glomerular Sclerosis— a urological disease. 5 Check Out… community.holycrosshs.org For more information on fellow classmates. In each and every case where violence, hatred, and misery has prevailed, some person, group, or culture has believed with all its heart that they were “right” about something—and that others were wrong. Wherever and whenever this thinking has prevailed, almost any action could be rationalized, and, up to the present, mankind has remained powerless in the face of its own destructive impulses. It is this seemingly insurmountable problem that has inspired one of Holy Cross’s newest academic programs—World War II and the Holocaust--in which ten Holy Cross sophomores have the opportunity to explore answers to the world’s most compelling questions: What leads humans to acts of incredible cruelty, intolerance, and violence? How has the world suffered as a result of man’s inhumanity to man? What can be done now and in the future to eliminate human suffering? Taught by an ensemble of teachers from the school’s various disciplines—history, English, art, science, math, theology, language—this unique program meets several times a week and is designed to for- World War II veterans, Howard and Walter Schwartz (bottom center) display acknowledgement certificates after a classroom “question and answer” session. ever change the way its participants—both students and teachers--view the world and humankind. Topics of study include a historical perspective as well as the underlying psychological and political forces that lead to World War II and the rise of Nazism. Classroom sessions cover a myriad of topics presented by different teachers--War in the Pacific, Crisis in the United States, the Nuremberg Trials, concentration camps, the misuse of science, codes used in espionage, and the role of the Church in the resistance. Ron Vallar, veteran Holy Cross history teacher, explains the uniqueness and value of the program, “This is an opportunity for students to gain an in-depth understanding of the blindness and lack of remorse of people who chose to be followers in acts of evil.” Encompassed in the program are field trips, “hands-on” activities, and guest lecturers which include sessions with Holocaust survivors and WWII veterans. Visits to the Jewish Heritage Center at Battery Park in New York City, the Holocaust Museum in Washington DC, the Temple Gates of Heaven Synagogue in Flushing, and the Clearview Senior Center, allow students to learn and experience firsthand the topics Peter Levantis examines a World War II medal during a classroom study group on insignias, medals, and photographs. Wally Schwartz, talks to the students about his experiences in WWII. 16 taught in the classroom. Mike Genovese, Director of Service Learning, expresses his enthusiasm, “The program provides dynamic interactive classroom experiences such as the ‘Triangle of Hate’ which exemplifies how prejudiced attitudes can ultimately lead to war and genocide.” Books and multi-media are also an important part of the program’s curriculum. Students view the film “The Scarlet and the Black” about a Vatican official who hid escaped prisoners of war and Italian resistance families. Students read and discuss “The Sunflower” by Simon Wiesenthal, “Night” by Elie Wiesel, and “We are Witnesses—Five Diaries of Teenagers Who Died in the Holocaust” by Jacob Boas. Art and service projects such as making photo frames for Jewish senior citizens, doing service for the Jewish elderly in the community, and creating a special display about genocide on the second floor of the school are all learning experiences. “All of this work is only the beginning,” explains Mike Genovese. “Students need to internalize what they learn and transform it into action!” A visit to the Clearview Senior Center for an Intergenerational “Rap Session” with Jewish senior citizens. It was the Knight’s 8069 victory over Christ the King that enabled Holy Cross to win the title with Blaise Ffrench ’08 turning in his finest basketball game of the season. It was just one year before that Christ the King prevailed over the Knights in the same tournament. The Varsity also made it to the CHSAA City Semi-Finals and to the Catholic State Semi-Finals with this year marking the first appearance by a Holy Cross Team in the elite AA Basketball Division. With the team starting five juniors this year, the 2008 season looks more than promising. Sylven Landesberg ’08 (Named New York Post City Catholic Player of the Year) scored 668 total points for the season—the most ever in Holy Cross history for a single season—and was named CHSAA Player of the Year. His average Varsity Basketball Team: Standing: Tim Beinert ‘08, Sylven Landesburg ‘08, Justin Giryluk ‘08, Ernest Freeman ‘08, Sharjf Mair ‘09, Kayvon Roberts ‘08. Sitting: Blaise French ‘08, Brian Myers ‘07, Shameel Carty ‘07, Jeff Delgado ‘07, Lespaul Newton ‘08. (Felix Llanos ‘08 was not available for the picture.) 25.7 points per game led the entire CHSAA League in scoring, and runs only second in school history to Derrick Chievous ’84 who averaged 27.1 per game. Sylven already stands third in Knight’s history for all-time points (1,232) surpassed only by Derrick (1,361) and Willie Dersch ’96 (1,399).
