HEARTHSTONE PARK IMPROVEMENTS
As spring approached, the HOA and Spencer Road PUD had begun maintenance and
improvements to Hearthstone Park. We started with major tree pruning, replenishing
playground safety surfacing, replacement of worn swings and painting the perimeter
fence. Next will be upgrades to the Memory Garden and drainage improvements.
In March, we met with the Spencer Road PUD Board. This was the culmination of
discussions that have played out over the course of a few months. The result was
everyone agreeing to refurbish the track in our park. You will hear a great deal about
the project over the next few weeks but I thought this might be a good place to start.
For those of you who use the walking/jogging track, you’ve probably noticed the wear
and tear. The rubberized track surface should have lasted 8 to 10 years before needing
repair. But unfortunately, it did not. The work took place in June and the park will be
TOTALLY closed for a couple of weeks. The Constables will help enforce our closing.
It is very important that no one enters the park while the work is going on. Fencing will
be placed at each entrance and signs will be posted. Although you may not see workers
there at all times, the new coating on the track needs time to cure and there are several
steps that make up the entire process. As soon as we can safely open the park, we will
remove the barriers.
Please help us while the park is closed by not entering and if you see someone inside,
call the Constables.
When the park reopens there will be changes and re-emphasis on the rules for using the
track. Most important, the track is to be used for foot traffic only. No bikes, skateboards, roller
blades or anything that will cause damage to the new coating will be allowed. Lightweight
strollers will not damage it. Bike racks have been provided in the park for visitors.
When the park reopens, we will post new signs addressing the use of the track. The
signs will read something like “Track is for foot traffic only, no bikes, no skateboards, no
razor scooters.” The Constables will again help us remind those in the park to adhere
to the rules. We certainly hope each and every one of the residents will follow the rules
and share this with neighbors.
Before you ask, the contractor said young children being pushed in strollers won’t hurt!
(Nor will our more mature neighbors using walkers.) All other wheeled devices are
strictly forbidden.
It’s our money that maintains the park both through annual assessments and water
fees and we all need to protect our investment. We strongly believe the park helps to
improve our home values. Let’s work together to keep the park nice.

HEARTHSTONE YARD OF THE MONTH
The Hearthstone Garden Club Yard of the Month committee suspended
selection for the month of May due to the recent flooding. We appreciate the
support and our thoughts are with all affected.
HEARTHSTONE STREETLIGHTS
The Hearthstone HOA coordinates maintenance of all the streetlights
throughout the community. This includes the “cobra head” lights like you see
along many streets and highways, as well as the decorative light poles along
Huffmeister and in some of the neighborhoods.
Cobra head streetlights need to be reported to CenterPoint, using the pole
number, which is the “address” for the light. It is a six digit number facing the
street. You can report streetlights that are not working or staying on during
the day at http://cnp.centerpointenergy.com/outage (Google streetlight
outage) or give us the pole number and we will do it for you.
Outages or problems with decorative streetlights should be reported to PCMI
at 281-870-0585. Please note the exact intersection or closest address. The
association has a contractor doing a monthly nighttime inspection for lights
that are out, but if you see a problem, please report it, so we can achieve our
goal to keep all the lights on all the time.

LOST & FOUND PETS IN HEARTHSTONE
Folks in Hearthstone are very helpful in getting lost pets reunited with their
owners, but all dog owners should ensure that there is a tag on each dog with
their name, address and phone number. Local pet stores have machines that
make tags like this while you wait. At least that would help found dogs get
back home quicker and with less trauma.

SAFETY TIPS - AVOID BEING A VICTIM
1. Call the constable’s office anytime you see a suspicious person and do not
let race, age or gender influence you calling (a suspicious person is anyone
you do not recognize on your street).
2. Call the constable’s office when you see a suspicious vehicle (any vehicle
parked in front of your neighbor’s home or driving around your street that you
don’t recognize).
3. Always keep all your doors and windows locked even when you are at
home.
4. Always keep your overhead garage door in the down position.
5. Remember neighbors looking out for neighbors are how the police catch
the bad guys.
6. Make sure to do a vacation watch whenever you go out of town.
7. If someone comes to your door, always go to the door and acknowledge
that you are there and remember to never open the door for anyone that you
do not know. The bad guys in almost all cases do not want you to be home.
Then always call the constable’s office so that we can check them out. When
they leave your house, they are going to your neighbors.
8. If you have children that stay at home alone, no matter what their age,
they need to go to the door and have a preplanned story for whoever is there
(my dad is working on the computer, he says to come back later). Then have
them call the constable’s office.
9. Never do business with people you don not know and trust. Never open the
door for solicitors. If no one in the neighborhood buys anything from them,
the companies that they work for will quit sending them into your subdivision.
10. Always lock your vehicles and never leave anything of value in plain sight
(covering up an item with a jacket doesn’t count).
Our dispatch number is 281-463-6666 (please put this number in your cell
phone as 911 constable or A constable so that it is one of the first contacts).

Platinum Sponsors Linebarger Goggan Blair & Sampson, IBI Group and
Satterfield & Pontikes Construction and Gold Sponsor KME Salas O’Brien
have generously supported the B. F. Adam Golf Classic helping the
Foundation raise more than $1.2 million over the past 10 years. To date the
tournament has raised in excess of $2.6 million, including $135,000 this year.
The B.F. Adam Classic is named for B.F. (Bernard Fred) Adam who was a lifelong
Cy-Fair resident and a devoted school board member, serving 24 years on the
board and namesake of B.F. Adam Elementary. The day’s events included lunch
sponsored by Caldwell Companies, welcoming remarks from Bob Adam CFEF
Trustee since 1971 and son of B. F. Adam, shotgun start, dinner catered by
Carl’s BBQ and Willies Grill & Icehouse, a raffle and live auction.
The B.F. Adam Golf Classic is one of the largest non-celebrity tournaments
in the Houston area. After the recent floods, it was a welcome relief for the
players as they enjoyed fair skies and very good playing conditions. The
tournament was a rousing success. This year’s winners included ACU of
Texas, Jakes’ Finer Foods and Prosperity Bank on the north course and
Purcell Construction, Inc, Alamo Red/The Backyard Grill and Cypress
Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital on the south course.

NEW STUDENT REGISTRATION
New Student Registration will begin August 9th-12th, 2016 from 8 AM to 3 PM
at all campuses. Visit your campus website or contact your school for further
information. To register, parents must provide the school with the following items:
• Certified copy of the child’s birth certificate from the Bureau of Vital Statistics
(see City of Houston Bureau of Vital Statistics to obtain a birth certificate if
born in the city of Houston)
• Current immunization record
• Proof of residency (a current electric, gas, or water bill or a lease agreement)
• Social security card for each child, if available
• Photo ID of parent or guardian
Since not every school has a prekindergarten program, parents may call the
neighborhood elementary school to help determine the school in which to
register their child.
To find out what school you are currently zoned for click on the following link:
www.transfinderi.com/tfitest/address.aspx?cid=CFI02966337550&rdr=1
or go to CFISD.net, Parents & Students, Registration, Which school do I
attend? Type in your street and zip code.
To be eligible for the Prekindergarten program, your child must be 4 years of
age by September 1, 2016 and meet an eligibility requirement as determined
by Texas law. No exceptions can be made.
Children entering Kindergarten for the first time must be five years old on or
before September 1, 2016. Due to Texas state law on age requirements, no
exceptions will be made. The district provides full-day kindergarten.
If your child is currently enrolled in Cypress-Fairbanks I.S.D. and over the
summer you moved from one school zone to another within the district, you
need to provide the registrar (at your child’s new home campus) with your
current proof of residence during new student registration. The registrar will
request your child’s records from his/her previous school.

GIRL SCOUTS OF SAN JACINTO COUNCIL
COPPER CREEK MEADOWS COMMUNITY
The community Bridging Ceremony held in May was our last “official “event
of the school year. Our bridging troops showed off their artistic talents with
the beautiful butterflies and flowers that decorated the stage! It is always a
pleasure to hear about the activities and projects these troops have worked
on and to see the smiling faces as the girls cross the bridge and don their
new vests and sashes. We would particularly like to thank troop 113035.
This bridging troop performed our flag ceremony and also helped to clean
up afterwards. You could see these Girl Scouts really work together as they
carried the dis-assembled bridge out to the parking lot! Many thanks to Julie
Mayer, who coordinated the event and to all those who participated.
• Troop 16162 reports that they were able to pack about 75 bags with cereal,
protein, vegetables, fruit, juice boxes, peanut butter, jelly and snacks. All
these bags were collected for Cy-Hope’s backpack program. This program
provides food for children during the summer and weekends when school
breakfast and lunch programs do not operate.

BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA COPPERHEAD DISTRICT
For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found in
the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant in
helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting helps
youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership skills,
outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives.
The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities that
allow them to:
• Try new things.
• Provide service to others.
• Build self-confidence.
• Reinforce ethical standards.
Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as individuals
while promoting activities that lead to personal responsibility and high selfesteem. As a result, when hard decisions have to be made, peer pressure
can be resisted and the right choices can be made.
Scouting provides a rewarding experience for boys ages 5 to 21. Scouting
through the local Packs and Troops teach outdoor and life skills which help
our youth Be Prepared. Your area is serviced by the BSA Sam Houston Area
Counsel - Copperhead District which includes 23 Cub Scout Packs (boys 5
to 10 years old), 13 Troops (boys from 11 to 18 years old) and 10 Venturing
units (boys and girls from 14 to 21). Our Units typically meet weekly.

“I’m In PAIN”
Can Chiropractic Help ME ?
We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor
of chiropractic can help my problem?”
We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and
examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete
consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary,
(procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00.
We will make this special program available through July. The only exception
to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents)
in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

FOSTER CHILDREN: PREPARATION
FOR ADULT LIVING (PAL)
When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent.
That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities
arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to figure out
how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole month.
Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program to help prepare
for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long course
culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the National Council for Jewish

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
FOR DREAM DACHSHUND RESCUE
DREAM Dachshund Rescue, Education & Adoption Mission is a Houstonbased 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to rescuing abandoned
Dachshunds and finding new homes for Dachshunds whose owners can no
longer care for them. Our committed volunteers, working closely with local
veterinarians, provide our Dachshunds with quality medical care and loving
foster homes until they are adopted into carefully screened, forever homes.
DREAM is currently looking for caring volunteers to provide temporary foster
care for our many rescued Dachshunds-in-need, currently awaiting adoption.
Prior to their adoption, DREAM continues to pay for all medical care and
monthly heart worm prevention. There is no long-term commitment required.
Food, water, shelter and a soft place to rest is all you need to provide. The
“love” just comes naturally.

LITERACY ADVANCE OF HOUSTON
IS LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS
Your way to transform a life in need… Teach someone to read! Just a few
hours a week can make all the difference for someone in your community!
Literacy Advance is Houston’s largest and oldest 100% volunteer-supported
literacy organization - and we need your help! We’re calling all passionate
volunteers to help adults learn to read, write and speak English. All classes
are free because they are taught by caring people just like you willing to
volunteer a few hours a week. We’d love to match you with a person in
need. Ola read her first book at age 49, thanks to a tutor just like you. Prior
teaching experience is welcome but not necessary. Training and ongoing
support is provided and we have locations across the city. Other volunteer
opportunities are available as well, to find out more please contact Maxine
Stefano, Volunteer Manager, at [email protected] or at 713-2668777 ext.16.
START THE NEW YEAR WITH A NEW
BEST FRIEND AND FAMILY MEMBER!
Loving Arms Pet Placement has an assortment of wonderful dogs and cats
hoping for their forever homes. We have all different types of small to large
dogs, mixed breeds and many wonderful cats to choose from.
We are a foster-based rescue for dogs and cats. If you are not ready to
commit to adopting a dog or cat permanently, the animals also need foster
families. Besides providing food, water and a safe place to sleep, foster
families socialize the animals so they are people friendly. Include the animal
in your daily home life inside your home. Get to know them as individuals so
you can share personality traits, likes/dislikes, anecdotes. Treat the animal
like your own and train him/her, if possible.

Celebrate your event with
Hearthstone Country Club!
If you have a little room in your heart and in your home (and your family
pets are up-to-date on their vaccines and monthly heart worm preventative),
then you are who we are looking for! There is no feeling in the world like
the unconditional love you’ll receive from a rescued Dachshund, plus the
friendships you’ll make when you join the DREAM Team! The more foster
homes we have, the more Dachshunds we can save. Please help save a life
and consider fostering today!

Provides Free Counseling to Troops and Families
Since September 11, 2001, 1.8 million troops have been deployed in
Afghanistan, Iraq and the Persian Gulf, with 17 percent of returning
troops suffering traumatic brain injuries or post-traumatic stress
disorder. Given the military culture’s emphasis on confidence,
strength and bravery, many service members are reluctant to expose
personal vulnerabilities to professional counselors. Give an Hour™
provides services that are separate from the military establishment,
offering options to service members who might otherwise fail to seek
or receive appropriate care.
Give an Hour™ is a nonpartisan, nonprofit national network of
mental health professionals providing free counseling services to
returning troops and their families. Give an Hour™ offers services
to veterans of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and their family
members. Family members are loosely defined to include married
or unmarried partners, parents, siblings, aunts/uncles—anyone
connected to the veteran who is suffering a psychological effect
related to the veteran’s service.
Banyan Counseling Network has an office located near the North
Cypress Medical Center and is trained to provide individual
and family counseling. Family support groups are also currently
forming. People interested in receiving services through Give an
Hour™ are encouraged to call 281-855-1982 or log on to www.
banyancounseling.com, (click Military Families link) or www.
giveanhour.org to determine availability or to locate another provider
