It is a beautiful work of skill and love for the Lord and His Eucharistic presence. This new tabernacle will enable us to follow the norms that when no one is present in the chapel for adoration the Blessed Sacrament be safeguarded by a closed tabernacle. Those with regularly assigned times for adoration will be notified of the procedure for doing this. Having Christ present in the Adoration Chapel 24/7 is such a great blessing to our parish. All are encouraged to take time to be with the Lord in prayer and adoration. ASCENSION’S CARING FOR OUR COMMON HOME COMMITTEE In response to Pope Francis’ call and the responsibility we have to care for our environment we are forming a parish initiative focusing on Caring for Our Common Home. The purpose of this group will be to advise and recommend practices related to our parish being good stewards of God’s gifts of the earth and its resources including our buildings, our grounds, our educational programs, our outreach and service to our community. Goals are to help all of us to make the link between our Christian faith and concerns for the environment, to promote actions that will reduce the parish ecological footprint and to encourage parishioners to implement practices that positively impact the environment. If you are interested in helping with this initiative, please contact Fr. Tom at: [email protected] or 913-681-3348 x 137. THANK YOU FROM THE LITTLE SISTERS OF THE POOR Dear Parishioners of Church of the Ascension, The Little Sisters of the Poor want to express our deepest gratitude for the wonderful welcome and hospitality we received during our visit to Church of the Ascension the weekend of March 13-14. The witness of your faith and devotion continues to be an inspiration to us. Saint Jeanne Jugan, our foundress and first Little Sister, would always say… “If God is with us, it will be accomplished.” God truly manifested His goodness to us through your generous gifts. We have already turned to our Merciful Father in a prayer of gratitude, asking Him to bless you for your sacrificial giving, enabling us to continue our much needed mission to the elderly poor. Please keep up your faithful prayer for vocations. God Bless You! NATHAN HAVERLAND Happy Easter! Hopefully you enjoyed your 40 day journey with the book Rediscover Jesus by Matthew Kelly. Now what? Step one: Pass the book along to someone else. Don’t bring it back to the Church. Don’t drop off at your local library. Don’t bring it to the Ascension Garage Sale. Pass it on to someone who really might benefit from it. This is a simple and effective way to evangelize to the world. Step two: The next step is for YOU to actually encounter Jesus. Jesus is truly present and living all around us, but how do we encounter Him? How do we meet Him and spend time with Him? To some the following may sound a little cliché, but maybe it is also time to rediscover Jesus truly living and present among us! Eucharist. At the Last Supper, Jesus made it pretty clear that He would not abandon the Church. Instead of abandoning the Church, Jesus gave Himself to the Church in a completely new and unfathomable way. Jesus could not have been clearer that the blessed bread and wine truly do become His body (Mt 26:26) and blood (Mt 26:28), and so one of the easiest ways to truly encounter Jesus is by frequently attending Mass and spending time in adoration. I have never met a person whose life was not radically changed by spending more time with the Eucharist. Confession. Immediately after the Resurrection, Jesus eagerly gave to the Apostles the power to forgive sins saying, “the sins you forgive are forgiven” (Jn 20:23). He did not have to do this, but He wanted to do this! He wanted all of humanity to encounter His mercy. The power to forgive sins has been handed on from the Apostles to the priests of our present age in the sacrament of Reconciliation. If we want to encounter Jesus, why not encounter that gift He was so eager to give on Easter and to do so frequently? Scripture. The Scriptures are a priceless treasure of the Church. They are a collection of writings that span many centuries but reach a culmination in the life and teachings of Jesus. They are the sacred vessel in which we learn of God’s love for humanity. An excellent way to encounter Jesus is to prayerfully read through the things He did and said. If you’ve never read an entire Gospel before, why not try? The Forgotten. If you want to know someone, it is wise to spend time with the things they love. If we search through the Scriptures, we see Jesus had a tremendous love for the sick and outcasts of society, often to the dismay of others. Jesus even said that if we serve them, we serve Him (Mt 25:45). There is no doubt that Jesus is truly present in the suffering and so if you want to encounter Jesus, spend some time with the forgotten. His Mother. As Jesus died on the Cross, we only know of a few things that were going through His mind. We know He was thinking of our Father in heaven (Lk 233:34), of the Psalms (Mt 27:46), of the criminals crucified with Him (Lk 23:43), and especially of His mother (Jn 19:26). God showed a tremendous amount of trust in Mary in asking her, of all the women of the world, to be the mother of His Son. If you want to encounter Jesus, turn to His mother! These are of course not the only ways to encounter Jesus, but if you truly want to grow in your relationship with Jesus, give these a try. No, I challenge you to try them! I do not doubt that if you do any of the above with regularity that you will rediscover Jesus truly living among us. 8 Church of the Ascension Easter Sunday March 27, 2016 WEEKLY PRAYER NOTE: Please be sure to let us know when your loved one is better. New Parishioners The Gospel for Easter this year reminds me of little children. Mary of Magdala runs from the tomb when she sees it has been opened. Then Peter and the other disciple race each other to the tomb. The other one wins the race but Peter goes in first (John 20:1-5). I can picture the disciple stopping suddenly and Peter running into him, tripping and ending up in the tomb. But putting slapstick aside, there is another way they are like children. Remember the Gospel about St. Thomas, who would not believe Jesus' resurrection until he could see him? Compare that to the disciple in today's reading, who "saw [the empty tomb] and believed" (John 20:9). That is real faith. For all he knew, someone could have taken Jesus' body and left the cloths behind. But he must have remembered Jesus saying that he would rise again. That is the kind of faith we find in a little child. Children will believe in things they cannot see, especially if there is a good reason. We "bribe" them into believing in Santa Claus or the tooth fairy by giving them Christmas presents or money under the pillow. They will also believe in Someone real who they cannot see. If we teach them that God made them and loves them, if we love them ourselves and teach them to love others, they will have good reasons to believe in God. As they get older, we can teach them how to pray, save money for the poor, visit the sick, or volunteer to help the homeless. We can reinforce what they learn in religion class and encourage them as they prepare for First Communion or confirmation. Jesus didn't say that only children could enter the Kingdom. He said we must become like children if we want to enter the kingdom of heaven (Matthew 18:3). What he means is that not only can we help teach children how to have faith, we can also learn from them about faith. Becoming like children does not mean being selfish or stubborn, throwing tantrums when we don't get our way. Those are childish behaviors that we put aside. Instead, we can keep a child-like faith and trust in God. Teaching them about God is a great way to help our own faith to grow. By giving them real examples of God's love for them, they will continue to believe long after they have given up the fairy tales of childhood. CHARLES MCGLINN BOOK SIGNING Trinity House, Overland Park, KS. April 2, 12:00PM Of all of God’s gifts, Easter shows us our fate. Forgiven we will rise and pass through Heaven’s gate. This Easter remember the sacrifice of a Son and through His resurrections eternal life we have won. This Easter we pray that the love of God is resurrected, reborn, and renewed inside your heart. God Bless You! Msgr. Charles McGlinn, a priest in our archdiocese, has published a book of prayers entitled Poem Prayers. This book is available in print and in i-book at Amazon and Barnes and Noble. It is also available in print at Trinity House, Overland Park; Soul Supply, Leavenworth; and I. Donnelly, Kansas City. There will be a book signing at Trinity House on April 2, from 12:00pm-3:00pm. All royalties go to Nuestros Pequenos Hermanos Orphanage in Mexico. From Ascension Catholic School, Happy Easter to all of you.
