Charitable Gifts Help Create
A Beautiful Place to Heal
For patients with cancer, their environment of care is as important as the treatment they receive. In addition to offering
the most advanced treatments, The Christ Hospital Cancer Center is providing a healing, comforting environment for
our patients and their families.
Charitable gifts totaling more than $750,000 have helped make
our Cancer Center a beautiful and inviting place supporting
patients’ return to good health.
Renovations are being completed in stages, and approximately 8,800
square feet has already been finished. The Center has a new outdoor
garden to bring the beauty of nature closer to patients and visitors,
a resource room conveniently located next to the waiting area with
information on cancer care and support for before, during, and after
treatment, and more.
Future renovations include the addition of a specialty boutique and
demonstration kitchen.

CANCER CARE
The Christ Hospital Foundation Guild Raises More than $18,000
to Support a Demonstration Kitchen for the Cancer Center
The Christ Hospital Foundation Guild
is all about having fun while making
a difference. In September, the
newly formed group of passionate
volunteers hosted “Let’s Get this
Kitchen Started,” an event to benefit
the Cancer Center’s demonstration
kitchen. Part of the Cancer Center
renovation, the demonstration
kitchen will provide programs on
cancer prevention, supplement ideas
and recipes, as well as foods to eat
during treatment and survivorship.
More than 120 friends and hospital
staff attended the fundraiser, which
was held at Stir in Montgomery,
Ohio. At the event, Chef Scott
Neidhard from Mission Fig Catering
demonstrated how to prepare a
seasonal gazpacho dish, mixologists
from Japps in Over-the-Rhine
divulged secrets to making signature
cocktails. Specialty coffee and hot
chocolate was provided by The Coffee
Exchange in Pleasant Ridge. Local
singer and songwriter Kelley Zenz
entertained the crowd with acoustic
guitar. The venue, food, drinks, and
music were all graciously donated to
support the event.
Amidst the mingling and fun, guests
made donations to support kitchen
equipment and participated in a
silent auction featuring aprons and
gift baskets made by Guild member,
Kris Neyer. Through event tickets,
donations, and auction sales, The
Foundation Guild raised more than
$18,000!
“Bringing people together to support
The Christ Hospital’s efforts to fight
cancer and improve lives has been
such an exciting and rewarding
experience,” said Kim Hartman,
Foundation Board Member and Guild
Chair. “We are so pleased with how
well this event went, and are looking
forward to future events!”

Proceeds will be used to equip the
new kitchen with appliances, serving
platters, cutlery, and other items, as
well as food for nutrition programs
and cooking demonstrations led by
guest chefs.

The Strub Family Gives Back
Robert Strub, M.D., Obstetrician &
Gynecologist, served on The Christ
Hospital Foundation Board and as
VP of Medical Affairs, and is currently
on the Carl & Edyth Lindner Research
Center Board and Continuing Medical
Education Committee. His wife, Jill,
was a nursing instructor for 29 years
in a variety of settings including The
Christ Hospital and the Christ Hospital
School of Nursing.
Several years ago, the couple
established an emergency assistance
fund for students at The Christ
College of Nursing and Health
Sciences, and this year, gave $25,000
to support continuing education for
the hospital’s nursing staff.
“Nurses often have to pay for their
own continuing education courses,
which can be costly,” says Jill. “We
want to make education more
accessible so they can continue
providing excellent care to patients
and families.”
“Education is especially important
for nurses today because technology
changes, and the acuity of care is
much higher,” says Dr. Strub. “We hope
our gift honors the nursing staff while
helping continue their success.”

a certification exam review course
through the American Association
of Critical Care Nurses. More than 70
nurses completed the course, and 30
have already taken and passed the
exam, including Gregory
Barlion, RN, BSN, CCRN,

in the Cardiovascular
Intensive Care Unit.

The Christ Hospital’s 125th Anniversary Gala was a huge success,
bringing together more than 1,200 physicians, employees,
volunteers, community leaders, and business partners to celebrate
the hospital’s legacy and future in the community.
Hosted by The Christ Hospital Foundation, the evening showcased
touching patient stories that demonstrated why our hospital
has been named the Most Preferred Hospital in the region for
19 consecutive years. In addition, long-serving members of
the Hospital’s Board of Directors Jim Bushman, Ted Emmerich,
Joe Head, and Roger Howe were honored for their talents,
commitment and support to the hospital.
Proceeds will benefit patient programs in primary care, heart,
joint and spine, cancer and women’s services, impacting the lives
of more than 500,000 patients we serve each year.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
The Christ Hospital Foundation works with donors to make
a meaningful impact on people’s lives. Philanthropic dollars
help purchase new technologies, provide enhanced training
and improve access to care—all of which make a difference
to patients and families who trust The Christ Hospital Health
Network with their wellbeing. Through their philanthropy in
FY14, donors invested $6.05 million in the health of Greater Cincinnati—nearly
double the amount donated the previous year.
Thanks to their generosity:
•The Joint and Spine Center is closer to completion. It will be one of only
a few facilities in the nation to offer comprehensive joint and spine care,
including sports medicine, rehabilitation, research studies and education, in
one convenient location.
•Cancer care is safer and more personalized. New monitors, able to detect
heart issues that may arise during treatment, are improving care and increasing
patient safety. Cancer Center renovations provide a healing environment for
personalized care that treats the whole person, not just the disease.
•The Breastfeeding Support Program is serving more women and infants,
ensuring at-risk infants the nutrition they need and working to decrease infant
mortality in Greater Cincinnati.
•Heart patients have new options that can help them lead healthier, longer
lives. New technologies, such as the Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD), are
extending and enhancing the lives of patients with heart disease.
•More geriatric patients are benefitting from the expertise of hospitalists
who help manage their unique and complex medical conditions. Our health
network offers patients and their families the region’s only outpatient center for
geriatrics and ongoing geriatric consultation.
These are but a few ways philanthropy impacts patient care throughout our
health network. Donors also give generously of their time and talents. In FY14,
dedicated volunteers undertook planning of the hospital’s much-anticipated
125th Anniversary Gala. The event raised vital support for patient assistance
programs in many of our clinical areas. Volunteers also helped establish The Christ
Hospital Foundation Guild to raise money and awareness through special events
and charitable giving.
On behalf of The Christ Hospital Foundation, I extend my heartfelt thanks to
all our donors who make a profound difference every day in the health and
wellbeing of our community.

Honoring the Lives of Babies
The pain and grief that a mother
and family feel when the baby they
wished for dies shortly before or
after birth is profound. It takes time,
compassion, and support to heal,
and for many families, honoring the
life and memory of their child assists
them in their journey through this
heartbreaking experience.
Supported by donor contributions,
The Christ Hospital’s Women in Need
of Grief Support (WINGS) Program
provides cremation, burial, and
remembrance ceremonies that bring
comfort and support to mothers
and families. WINGS helps families
make decisions about how to best
honor their babies and assist them
in beginning their grief journey.
Upon parental requests, baptisms
and/or blessings are performed,
and memory boxes are started with
pictures, locks of hair, footprints and
other means by which to remember
the baby’s life.
Remembrance ceremonies,
held annually at Walnut
Hills and Oak Hill
Cemeteries, bring
families from all over the
region together to reflect

In September, the WINGS Program
held its sixth annual remembrance
ceremony, which brought families
from as far as Findlay, Ohio, Louisville,
Kentucky and Providence, Rhode
Island together to honor their
children and grandchildren.

Behind-the-Scenes of The Christ Hospital
Joint and Spine Center
Friends and donors of The Christ Hospital
Foundation were given a sneak-peak of the
future of orthopaedic and spine care this past
September at a private, behind-the-scenes
tour of the new Joint and Spine Center.
The group saw eight key areas of the Center,
including spectacular views of the city, and
learned about specific design elements that
will make the patient experience among
the very best in the country. The tour was
led by Rick Perkinson, Director of Facilities
and Construction, Herb Caillouet, Executive
Director of the Musculoskeletal Service Line,
and Bob Inkrot, Senior Project Executive of
Messer Construction.

Cyber Monday, but have you heard
about Giving Tuesday? In 2012, two
non-profits in New York City created
#GivingTuesday™ in response to
the commercialization of the days
immediately following Thanksgiving.
Giving Tuesday was created as a
national day of giving, and refers to
the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, which
is December 2 this year.
A completely social media campaign,
#GivingTuesday™ spreads its message
through Facebook, Twitter, and
Instagram with links to non-profit

an international social media
phenomenon and was responsible for
donations of $19 million to non-profit
organizations all over the world.
This year, The Christ College of
Nursing and Health Sciences is joining
the global celebration of giving. Its
Student Congress has embraced
#GivingTuesday™ as a platform to
raise awareness and encourage giving
to the College in support of student
scholarships. Throughout November
and up to December 2, students
will be posting and tweeting on
social media about their experience,

gratitude to donors who have made
their scholarships possible, and the
importance of charitable giving for
scholarships. Throughout the Fall
Alumni Annual Fund Campaign,
alumni will be encouraged to not only
make their annual gift but to join in
the national day of giving and spread
the word about the importance of
supporting the College.

and Health Sciences receive financial assistance.
The gap between tuition assistance available
and the need per student is $2,000 -$5,000

Foundation Board Spotlight
Kathryn Ann Weichert, M.D.
Kathryn Ann Weichert, M.D. retired from The Christ Hospital
in 2011 after working for more than 20 years as a Radiation
Oncologist. Today, Ann continues to give her time, talents,
and philanthropic support to the hospital and its oncology
program. She is a Board Member of The Christ Hospital
Foundation and committee member of the 125th Anniversary Gala, and
remains committed to improving the patient experience as a volunteer.
With a keen talent in gardening, Ann has taken personal interest in
revitalizing two garden areas of the Cancer Center as well as one on the first
floor of the hospital with the help of Bill Knox from Natorp’s Garden Center.
The gardens bring the healing elements of nature closer to patients, visitors,
and employees. Ann also spearheaded the fundraising for telemetry units on
the inpatient oncology floor so that clinical staff can monitor patients’ vital
signs more easily and detect emergent medical issues while continuing to
provide exceptional care.
