PIONEERING TAIMEN FISHING
In 1995, at the suggestion of friends leading the Mongolian
Biodiversity Project, Jeff Vermillion organized a fall
expedition to explore the rivers of Mongolia for trophy
Taimen. The results far surpassed his expectations. During
the 1995 exploratory, Jeff and our Mongolian outfitter,
Hovsgol Travel Company, fished several rivers in Mongolia
which held large Taimen populations. Unlike the Taimen
Rivers in Siberia and other parts of Mongolia, these rivers
produced Taimen in the 50 - inch -- plus range on a dry fly.
Since that time, we have built two lodges in the Eg Ur
watershed and have spearheaded the first international
Taimen conservation project. With the help of the World
Bank, we have succeeded in protecting the Taimen in this
critical watershed. In fact, in 2010, we landed the biggest
Taimen we have ever landed, a new world record. In 2011
we did not break the world record again, but we ended
up landing very good numbers of big fish during the entire
season.
In addition to conserving the fishery, we have also re-built
the Dayan Derkh monastery on the banks of Ur River.
The monastery was destroyed by the Soviets in the 1930’s,
and, as part of our conservation project, we rebuilt the
monastery to serve as the spiritual center for the families
living within the watershed. The monastery has succeeded
in renewing the conservation ethic in the local community
and serves as the foundation for our conservation efforts
within the valley.
We are very proud of our track record in Mongolia, and
we look forward to sharing this wonderful part of the
world with you. The information which follows has been
based on our past seasons of experience. We’re sure this
will answer a number of your questions and assist you in
preparing for your trip. There have been many refinements
planned for this year which will enhance comfort and
logistics, but you will still experience a real sense of
adventure in the remote, outer reaches of Mongolia as well
as outstanding Taimen fishing. Please feel free to call us
with any questions about the trip. We love to talk about
Mongolia.
Mongolia: An enchanting land
Mongolia is a mysterious country to foreigners. To most, it
3
MONGOLIAN TAIMEN C AMP
is simply recognized as the fabled homeland of the fierce
nomad warrior Genghis Khan. After your fishing journey,
we hope you’ll remember Mongolia for its wild unbroken
countryside, its kind and generous people, and, by central
Asian standards, abundant wildlife.
Mongolia is located in northern Asia. It is bordered
by Russia to the north and China to the south. This
precarious political position and its natural isolation--the
Altai Mountains to the west and the Gobi Desert to the
south--have kept Mongolia out of the Western spotlight for
the last 70 years. It was only in 1990 that the first Western
tourists began to trickle in.
Since that time, Mongolia’s capital city has seen exceptional
growth while Mongolia’s countryside still retains that magic
spirit which makes Mongolia one of the most pristine
cultural and fishing destinations in the world.
Political overview
In 1990, Mongolia declared its independence from Russia.
This sudden liberation caused an immediate economic
collapse. Like other satellite states, Mongolia had been
completely dependent on the Soviet Union’s welfare
system. Unemployment soared, as did the price of essential
consumer goods. For the first time, Russians began
demanding hard currency for their goods. The Mongolians
were left without the means to keep their cities running. It
soon became apparent that, on its own, Mongolia did not
have the infrastructure to survive.
However, the Mongolians are hardy people and were
well prepared for food, gas, and other shortages. They
were dedicated to change. Since their independence, the
country’s economy has slowly improved, and today is quite
vibrant. In fact, it is one of the world’s fastest growing
economies in the world.
If restaurants, bars, hotels, and foreign goods are
considered signs of flourishing economy, then Ulaanbaatar,
the capital, is booming. Unfortunately for most Mongolians,
stocked shelves don’t mean much. During the communist
era the shelves were empty. Now in more democratic
times they are filled with products beyond their
imaginations or salaries. Still, Mongolians are dedicated
W WW.MONGOLIATAIMENFISHING.COM
PIONEERING TAIMEN FISHING
to making their country work, seemingly unfazed by the
hardships of their daily lives.
Mongolia is presently undergoing an economic boom
fueled by mining projects in the Gobi desert to the south.
This activity has created good paying jobs and, in most
cases, is being done in a manner that will create long lasting
benefits to Mongolia without the environmental damages
that are so prevalent in the developing world. Coupled
with vast foreign aid, Mongolia seems to be approaching a
promising new era.
Terrain
Mongolia is roughly the size of Alaska or two and a half the
size of Texas. It has an extremely diverse terrain: vast semidesert and desert plains, extensive grasslands, unbroken
larch and pine forests, and high mountains.
At our camps, anglers will feast on vistas of wide fertile
valleys, thick forests, and surrounding mountains. These
surrounding mountains and forests are inhabited by elk, as
well as wolves, roe deer, moose, and bear.
Climate
Mongolia, again like Montana, is a dry place with great
daily and seasonal temperature ranges. During August,
September and early October, the weather in the region to
be fished is typically quite good. Sunny days and cold nights
are the norm; however, fishermen should come prepared
for potential fall weather. In the spring, you can expect
similar weather with cool nights and warm days.
hub. It, like the Mongolian weather, is a study of contrasts; it
is home to new hotels, old Soviet-style apartment buildings,
vast public squares and cows, goats and horses which
wander through its parks in search of some undiscovered
grass. On the outskirts of U.B., there are heavily forested
mountains and on the outskirts of the city there are
Mongolian gers scattered in every direction.
Religion
The pre-dominant religion in Mongolia is Tibetan
Buddhist Lamaism. Unfortunately, most of the Mongolian
monasteries were destroyed during the communist rule.
Near our camps there are a number of shrines at the sites
where temples were pillaged and destroyed during the
Communist era but have been re-built through our Taimen
Conservation project. Interested clients can enjoy visits
to the Gaandan Hiid Monastery in Ulaanbaatar as well as
the recently re- built Dayan Derkh monastery. Religion has
made a complete revival since Mongolia’s independence.
Currency
The national currency of Mongolia is the Tugrik. While
the currency has stabilized to a certain degree, we urge
clients to change only what is immediately necessary. Keep
in mind that tourist shops in Ulaanbaatar eagerly accept
U.S. dollars as well as credit cards. Some clients have
encountered difficulty cashing traveller’s checks in U.B.,
and we do not recommend relying upon them for your
monetary needs during your trip.
Language
The official language of Mongolia is Khalkh Mongol.
Secondary languages include Russian and English. Language,
however, will not be a concern during your stay. When
you are in Ulaanbaatar, you will be escorted by an Englishspeaking guide. All of our fishing guides speak English, and
we have translators in each camp for trips to visit the local
villages and herders.
Ulaanbaatar
Ulaanbaatar is the capital of Mongolia and home to nearly
a third of its population. U.B., as it is referred to by the
expatriates and tourists, is Mongolia’s business and tourism

Flight information
Traveling to Mongolia is not nearly as difficult as it would
seem. Ulaanbaatar is just a two-hour flight from Beijing
or a three hour flight from Seoul by commercial airline. If
you are flying from Europe, there are regular flights from
Moscow and Berlin.
Note about flights: Please be advised that flight schedules
do change; plane connections can be missed resulting in a
missed charter to the camp. Please keep in mind that these
things are beyond our control. Neither Sweetwater Travel
Company, Hovsgol Travel, nor any of its affiliated agents will
be responsible for any additional costs incurred. We highly
recommend some type of travel insurance for situations
out of our control.

THE CAMP
About the camp
The camps are located on nice stretches of river in
the remote outback of Mongolia. They are strategically
positioned to enable fishermen to access over 90
combined miles of river by jet boats. These are isolated
wilderness facilities with very limited access to the outside
world, which enhances the fishery and the adventure
experience. Our fishermen have provided glowing reports
about the standard of service and level of comfort at
the camp. Each camp is equipped with a dining lodge,
bathhouse and shower facility.
Mongolian gers
Fishermen will stay in traditional Mongolian gers which
are felt tents wrapped around a collapsible wooden frame.
They are 9 feet high and 18 feet in diameter, much larger
than standard wall tents, and are equipped with framed
full-length single beds, ample room for storing gear, and
an area to sit down and relax by a wood stove. Each ger
accommodates two fishermen.
Problems during the week
Our Mongolian camps operate as smoothly as any camp
out there, but occasionally there are issues. When they
come up, the only way we can fix them is if you let us
know. Please don’t hesitate to pull a representative aside
at any time. They are true pros and will do everything they
can to address the issue.
Electricity
The camps run on diesel generators supplying 110 volt
electricity and run from 6 a.m. each morning to 11:00 p.m.
each night. It is fine to charge your electronic devices.
Communications
The camp has a satellite phone. The cost is $3.00 per
minute. Renting your own satellite phone might be the best
option if you need to be in touch frequently.
Medical evacuation insurance
All fishermen are required to purchase medical evacuation
insurance prior to departure. It only takes about 10
minutes by phone or online.
Please visit Global Rescue to purchase medical evacuation
insurance prior to departure.
Alcohol
Beer, wine, and soft drinks are provided at the camp and
are included in the land package cost. Fishermen should
8
MONGOLIAN TAIMEN C AMP
bring a supply of their drink of choice; none will be
available at camp. Bringing liquor into China and Mongolia
is not a problem. Purchasing liquor at the multitude of
duty-free stores in the Seoul or Beijing airports should
provide you with everything you need. You can also
purchase most liquor in Ulaanbaatar.
Cuisine
Food is prepared by an experienced Mongolian kitchen
staff, and generally clients have been quite pleased with the
food. Daily meals include a wide range of traditional
Mongolian and American dishes. After a soup course,
grilled sheep, beef, chicken and fish prepared in a variety of
fashions may accompany side dishes of steamed carrots,
beets, cabbage, potatoes and other vegetables. Mixed
salads are served nightly. All food is prepared with
properly filtered water, so there is no need to pack
bottled water.
Around the camp
Our camps are surrounded by exceptionally beautiful
mountains, hills, and valleys. From our lodge, you can hike
or horseback to see the Mongolian outback. Mongolia is
one of the few Asian countries that still enjoys robust
wildlife populations, and you will encounter elk, deer, and
wolves while you are exploring the area around camp.
We encourage all of our guests to visit the local villages
and families during their week. Each camp is staffed with a
translator who can accompany you to experience a day in
the lives of a Mongolian family. Additionally, near both
camps, there are significant Buddhist landmarks with a
monastery upstream of the upper camp and an incredible
shrine near the lower camp.
Mongolia is a great place for both the fisherman and the
non-fisherman. We offer a special non-fisherman rate
during most weeks.
Insects
Mongolia is a dry country with remarkably few bugs, but
mosquitoes and white socks are present in some of the
wetter areas.

FISHING
The fishery
The rivers in the region to be fished are a fly fisherman’s
dream. They are clear and easy to wade. The banks are easy
walking and range in size from 40 to 120 feet wide. It is
hard to imagine that a fish as large as the taimen can live
in these waters. In fact our largest taimen yet, a 60 inch
fish, was taken on a mouse pattern in a particularly narrow
stretch of river.
Water conditions in Mongolia are generally quite stable;
however, if the headwaters of our rivers do receive a
heavy rain, off-color water conditions are possible. In
the past, we have found that fishing is still possible in
off - color conditions and that the rivers generally clear
quickly. Fishing weeks will not be canceled; refunds will
not be offered if muddy water conditions occur during the
course of the season. Sweetwater Travel Company cannot
be responsible for the water conditions during the fishing
season. In the event of high water that causes a week to be
re-scheduled, rain-checks will be offered for the following
season. For the record, in our 15 years of operation in
Mongolia, we have only had to do this twice.
Fishing tips
Taimen fishing in Mongolia is a lot like fly fishing for
oversized Atlantic salmon or steelhead on a dry fly. It is
similar because you are fishing for taimen in the current
and, consequently, need to keep your fly riding high in the
water. By riffle hitching a mouse, large muddler or streamer,
fishermen can keep their fly twitching through the surface
film. Taimen have a true weakness for flies presented in this
fashion.
For fly fishermen, though, getting your fly to ride properly
is the least of your problems. Keep in mind that some of
these fish are 4 – 5 feet long. Now imagine a fish that large
visibly chasing down your fly. In some cases taimen will
come completely out of the water and hit your fly on their
way back into the water. Other times taimen will simply
follow it slowly with their tail out of the water some
four feet behind the fly and attempt to gulp it in slowly
like a Montana cutthroat. Whatever the case, more often
than not it is a spectacle that will bewilder even the most
experienced, and the result is that the fisherman will pull
9
MONGOLIAN TAIMEN C AMP
the fly away from the fish before an actual take.
Remember, like Atlantic salmon and steelhead fishing, it
is crucial that you let the fish take down the fly before
striking. If you get that far, once the fish is hooked up try
to keep calm because the fish won’t! Don’t run down the
shoreline trying to get below the fish. It is far more crucial
to keep control on a fish this large. By running, you will
probably just stumble and break a rod. Once the fish has
made its initial run, walk down trying to get even with the
fish keeping good tension.
Keep in mind that all taimen are released, so
please treat them with great care! Do not pull
them onto the shore under any circumstances.
The guide staff
Our guide staff at the camps consist of highly experienced
guides, who are professionals and well respected in the
fly fishing world. They are very personable and will do
everything possible to make your fishing vacation in
Mongolia a memorable one.
Fishing boats & Equipment
Fishermen will fish from 18 ft. aluminum “semi - v” Lowe
boats powered by 55 hp Mariner jet units with two
fishermen to a boat. Atlantic salmon-style drops are
possible for fishermen that enjoy a break from wading.
Each boat is equipped with tools, an emergency kit, and a
cooler for food and drinks during the day.
The fish
Taimen, lenok, Arctic grayling, and amur pike are all present
in the region to be fished. At the camp, we require that
all fishermen fish with barbless hooks. Fishing is fly fishing
catch and release only.
Taimen (Hucho taimen) are an especially ferocious fish that
can attain weights of well over 100 pounds. In Russia, there
are reports of taimen up to 200 pounds. On the rivers
to be fished in Mongolia, the average taimen is around
32 inches and roughly 10 pounds. However, almost every
week, fishermen will have chances on fish over 50 inches.
W WW.MONGOLIATAIMENFISHING.COM
FISHING
Catch and release is required on all taimen. Taimen are an
aggressive fish that will eat anything they can fit in their
mouth. During the 1996 exploratory, one of the guides
demonstrated how Mongolians fish for taimen with prairie
dogs. After shooting a prairie dog and rigging the bait, the
guide cast out his prairie dog and reeled it back as fast as
possible. The result was incredible. A 45 inch taimen came
out of the water and slammed the bait. Fortunately for fly
fishermen, a simple mouse pattern will suffice in bringing
these huge fish to the surface. Streamer patterns on
either a sink tip or floating line also work well. In the past,
fishermen have resorted to wets after refusals on mice,
poppers, etc.
in most situations. As for lenok and Grayling, we suggest
either the Rio Gold or S.A. GPX in 5 or 6 weight.

Mongolia is a fascinating country. We have included the

Lenok (Brachymstax lenok) are the Mongolian equivalent
and J Bat-Irriedu
of a trout. In appearance they look like a rainbow trout
with the mouth of a tarpon. These fish rely on the
prolific caddis and mayfly hatches, and terrestrials such as
grasshoppers and crickets. Lenok average 18-20 inches long
and are very entertaining on lighter fly rods. Larger lenok
will dine on mice patterns and streamers. As one fisherman,
later dubbed as “Lord lenok,” put it: “Why on earth would
you cast gerbil flies for a fish like taimen that are so huge
and difficult to bring in when you can sight cast normal
dries to 20 – 28 inch lenok?”
Arctic Grayling (Thymallus arcticus) are, to put it simply,
scared. The rivers are full of grayling of all sizes. During
hatches, two things become apparent; one, the rivers of
Mongolia are full of 12 – 18 inch grayling; two, taimen
consider grayling an arctic delicacy. Still, like the lenok, they
provide good sport and action on dries.
Amur pike are present in Mongolian rivers and lakes. In
fact they are reported to reach well into the 30 pound
range. From our experience, though, we have not had great
success on this species.
Line choice
Over the years we have found several fly lines that work
best for taimen and are suited to casting the larger fly
patterns we use to catch them. For single handed rods,
our favorite line is Rio’s Clouser (coldwater). It has a fatter
head than most lines allowing the angler to turn over
large flies easily. For two handed rods, the Rio Skagit Flight
head with 30 pound running lines seems to work the best
