The City of La Verne is pleased to welcome a new major pharmaceutical company, Gilead Sciences, Inc.
to our community. Gilead is a worldwide, research-based biopharmaceutical company that discovers,
develops, and commercializes new medicines for different medical sectors. Gilead has received the
necessary entitlements to construct a new campus for their company on Wheeler Avenue, south of
Arrow Highway. The development of the 23-acre property will also result in the completion of Wheeler
Avenue to Puddingstone Drive. Gilead, a Fortune 500 company, will bring approximately 500 jobs to their
state-of-the-art facility expected to be under construction in early 2015 with anticipated completion by
2018. The Gilead campus is expected to be a positive addition to the La Verne Business Park, and will be
La Verne’s largest building at the expected ultimate build-out of 400,000 square feet.

WATER
RESTRICTIONS
CURRENTLY IN PLACE
At its August 4th meeting, the La Verne City Council enacted Phase
V Water Use Restrictions of the City’s Water Conservation Ordinance.
Residential customers receive a baseline allowance of 28,000 gallons
for two months; all other water customers are required to reduce their
demands by 20% from the corresponding period during calendar
year 2013. The Council’s action ensures the City’s compliance with
the emergency regulations adopted by the State Water Resources
Control Board.
FAQ’s
What do I do when I see water being wasted or a regulation being
violated?
Please contact the City of La Verne Water Waster Hotline at (909) 5968787 and leave a detailed message regarding the date, time, location
and wasteful activity.
Do you offer any rebates or programs to help cover the cost
of appliances, irrigation equipment, or anything else to help
homeowners reduce water consumption?
Yes, the city currently offers several rebates for equipment such as
low flush toilets, low flow shower heads and faucets, high water
efficiency clothes washers, turf removal, smart controllers, sprinkler
nozzles and rain barrels. Please visit www.bewaterwise.com for more
information.
How often should I water my grass/landscaping?
The current mandatory water restrictions allow 5 minutes per station
for a total of 20 minutes per station, per week. Because people have
different types of soil and plants in their yard, we recommend visiting
the water calculator at www.bewaterwise.com/calculator.html.
What is “runoff” and why is it prohibited?
Runoff is water that flows off of landscape, often due to overwatering.
Runoff is prohibited because water is being wasted running down
the sidewalks, driveways, streets and into the gutter. In addition to
wasting water, this practice is prohibited because it could cause a
tripping hazard and the runoff picks up additional materials that
could pollute the stormdrain system.
How many gallons of water are used on average in a single-family
home in La Verne per month?
18,000
What is the allocated consumption for each single family home/
residential user and how is it calculated?
The allocated consumption for each single family home is 28,000
gallons per two months. The allotment is based on a per capita
calculation.
I have a large yard and a large house so why don’t I get a higher
allotment than 28,000 gallons per two months for water use?
The standard allotment is for indoor use and therefore does not
take into consideration your size of home or size of yard. The priority
during the drought is for residents to be able to have water available
for personal sanitation, drinking, eating, cooking, washing and
cleaning. Therefore, irrigation and square footage of a home is not
factored into the baseline allotment.
Does the City of La Verne offer any classes for help me to convert
my traditional lawn into a drought tolerant landscape?
Yes, the City has partnered with Three Valleys Municipal Water
District and Metropolitan Water District to conduct regular California
Friendly Landscape Classes. Please visit www.ci.la-verne.ca.us for
more information.
Does the city offer financial assistance to fund repairs of broken
pipes, toilets, sprinklers or anything else that might waste water?
The City does not have any funds available for the repair of
deteriorating pipes, toilets or sprinklers at this time. However, there
are free instructional booklets available at City Hall for plumbing
repairs, tools for sprinkler repair and rebates for water efficient
irrigation equipment as well as many other household appliances.
Please visit www.bewaterwise.com for more information.
I have installed low flush toilets, low flow shower heads and
faucets, what are additional ways to conserve water?
Indoors- When warming up the water before taking a shower, place
a bucket to catch the water and use to water plants, rinse fruits and
vegetables or fill the pet drinking bowl. When taking a shower, turn
off the water while soaping up. When washing your hands, turn off
the water while allowing soap to work. When washing clothes and
dishes, wait until the appliance is full before running a load.
Outdoors- When watering your lawn, focus on dry spots instead
of watering everywhere and adjust when you notice runoff. Before
watering your landscaping, periodically aerate the grass or soil
to allow more water to be soaked in and avoid compaction. Take
advantage of large rebates for the removal of turf and installation of
drought tolerant landscaping. Please visit www.ci.la-verne.ca.us for
more information.
USED OIL RECYCLING
If you are one of many households who include a “DIY” (Do it yourself ) oil changer, then we have good news for you! At various
community events, the City of La Verne offers FREE supplies (drain pans, rags and funnels) to help you change and dispose of
your used oil. Periodically we host oil filter exchange events where bringing a used oil filter will earn you a FREE brand new one.
Within the City of La Verne we have three certified used oil collection centers, Auto Zone, Quickie’s Oil Change and
Sunland Tire of La Verne. After you change your oil next time, please make sure to bring your used oil into one
of these centers for FREE! If bringing the oil to a certified collection center isn’t an option for you, please call

LESS IS MORE!
Have you ever wondered what happens to all of the things we don’t
need anymore? Trash goes into the landfill and recyclables get
processed and mostly reused; but what about the contaminated
materials- the things that don’t break down or hazardous and
electronic waste? They all end up in different places, but precious
resources are used in collecting, transporting, sorting, cleaning,
storing, reusing and disposing of them.
TRASH: Our trash is collected and then put on a train or truck and
sent to a landfill approximately fifty miles away.
RECYCLABLES: The City of La Verne residents fill approximately 35
trucks full of recyclables every Monday that are brought to a sorting
facility. Energy is then used to sort the recyclables, clean them and
store them until they are bailed together and sent to companies who
manufacture new products out of our old materials.
CONTAMINATED RECYCLABLES: Materials with food, grease and
other contaminating products that cannot be rinsed off become
trash and end up in landfills.
ELECTRONIC WASTE: When it is brought to an official electronic
waste collection, the materials are put through a high tech separation
device to extract valuable metals, which are sent to a smelter. The
plastics are removed, then the metals and plastics are remade into
different products.
HAZARDOUS WASTE: When hazardous waste is brought to an
official hazardous waste collection event, the materials are separated
and processed differently. Some liquids are neutralized, some are
reclaimed, sent to smelters and remade into other products, and
some are placed in hazardous waste landfills, while others are
blended or re-refined and used as fuel.
REPURPOSING IS REWARDING!

YFAC WORD
The City of La Verne Youth and Family Action Committee is a formal
committee of the City, comprised of representatives from private
agencies, non-profit organizations, La Verne Police Department,
Bonita Unified School District, the City, and many interested citizens.
With the committee’s focal point on trying to address challenges
that confront our youth, before they grow into greater concerns,
we are constantly made aware of new trends. On the premise that
knowledge is power the committee has created the “YFAC Word” as a
way to pass that information on to parents so they too can be aware
of these potential issues.
In a report released by the Office of National Drug Control
Policy (ONDCP) several conclusions were noted regarding
teen’s perceptions of prescription drugs and use of them.
• A majority of teens (62%) say prescription pain relievers are
easy to obtain from medicine cabinets of family or relatives.
As responsible as recycling and hazardous/e waste collections are,
there are other options for repurposing goods. Just because you’re
done with a t-shirt, phone, book, couch or television doesn’t mean
someone else wouldn’t look at it as brand new and look forward to
months or years of enjoyment with the same product. After all, one
person’s trash is another person’s treasure!
• Teens 12-17 and young adults 18-25 represent the number 1 &
2 age groups in terms of abuse of prescription drugs.
To repurpose goods, please explore these options:
1)Donate your products to a nearby second hand store or charity.
This will help conserve our resources, provide someone with
low cost necessities and may also earn you a tax rebate!
• Teens are also abusing some over-the-counter (OTC) cough and
cold remedies to get high, which is especially troubling given
teens’ easy access to these products.
2)Consider getting to know your neighbors better and bring your
items to the Community Yard Sale on Saturday, April 25th, 2015.
3)Ask your friends and neighbors or place an ad to see if anyone
else needs the very product you’re looking to dispose of.
4)Bring your items to a local shelter, church or community
organization to see if their visitors could use these items.
WINTER/SPRING 2015
• Teens describe the use of prescription drugs as “responsible,”
“controlled,” “safe” when compared to street drugs.
• More teens abuse prescription drugs than any illicit drug except
marijuana.
Most bothersome about these results is teens say parents are not
discussing these dangers with them, even though research shows
parental disapproval is a powerful way to keep teens from using drugs.
Also, parents have the ability to significantly reduce these figures
by restricting access to these medications. Considering this, YFAC
wants to encourage parents with teens or preteens to take action.
The main purpose of ONCDP is to establish policies, priorities,
and objectives for the Nation’s drug control program. The goals
of the program are to reduce illicit drug use, manufacturing, and
trafficking, drug-related crime and violence, and drug-related health
consequences.

SENIOR CITIZENS’ ADVISORY COMMITTEE
The La Verne City Council established a Senior Advisory Committee in October 1989. This
committee has been responsible for all of the senior activities, lunch program, Dinner
Dances, etc. If you would like to share your thoughts, ideas, or concerns, please plan to
attend these public meetings held on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 10:00 a.m. at
the La Verne Community Center. Your input is welcomed.
SENIOR CITIZENS TAX ASSISTANCE
Do you have questions about your taxes? Would you like assistance in completing your
income tax form this year? AARP’s tax aide program has trained volunteers who are
willing to help you. Volunteers provide free assistance to low or moderate income to
seniors by filling out simple tax returns and answering tax questions. They are trained
in corporation taxes as well as state and local taxes. When you meet with a tax aide
volunteer, you should bring: a copy of last year’s tax forms, any forms showing income
you earned or pensions or Social Security paid to you, 199 forms showing interest or
dividends that your investments have earned, receipts or cancelled checks for income
or property taxes you have paid, or any contributions you have made to charities.
Starting January 12, please call the Community Center at (909) 596-8776 to schedule
an appointment for any Tuesday or Wednesday between February 5 and April 14 from
9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

City of
La Verne
This program is designed to help senior and disabled residents of Claremont, La
Verne, Pomona and San Dimas who can’t easily use existing transportation. Program
participants recruit their own volunteer drivers from among their friends and
neighbors. Passengers then have the means to reimburse them for mileage costs. The
program is allowed to cross city and county lines, but most importantly it provides an
opportunity for volunteers to share companionship and friendships. And that’s the
whole idea behind Community Senior Services, which is acting as the umbrella agency.
Community Connections staff will do extensive phone interviews with applicants. For
more information or to apply, call 909-621-9900 Monday through Friday from 11:00 a.m.
to 3:00 p.m.

Youth Gymnastics
The La Verne Gymnastics program’s philosophy is to develop a
child’s self-esteem, by providing successful experiences in a noncompetitive environment. Our “personal best” non-competitive
approach helps every child experience success and produces high
self-esteem and social bonds. Head coach Brenda Dalton, with
38 years of coaching gymnastics experience, runs a progressive
curriculum. Gymnasts enjoy our Air Trak, bars, beams, minitrampoline, incline mats, tumblers and back handspring machines.
Coach to student ratios are: 1;5, 1;6 or 1;8 depending on the age and
level of the class.

LA VERNE VETERANS MEMORIAL
The La Verne Veterans Memorial was created as a venue of respect, honor, and esteem for those fellow citizens
of our community who have served and will serve in our nation’s armed forces. This is a place where veterans
can connect with one another and where their families and friends can pay tribute. The Veterans Memorial
provides a tangible testament to the service and sacrifices made by veterans from the La Verne community. The
memorial is located on the corner of Magnolia Street and Bonita Avenue in front of Veterans Hall. It features an
obelisk with the names of the men and women from La Verne who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.
It also features flags representing each branch of the military. Please join in paying tribute to the valor and
contributions of all who have served our country.
PURCHASE A BRICK
Bricks will be prominently placed throughout the plaza of the memorial. Bricks can be purchased to honor veterans for
serving our country, whether from La Verne or not.
