GOLD DISCOVERED IN RED LAKE
On a blustery day in July1925, two men stand on a rock outcrop not far from
the shore of a small bay on Red Lake. These men have just found what every
prospector dreams of…GOLD!
But Red Lake is a far away place at the end of a long canoe trip. Only First
Nations people know this northern land very well. It is not until New Year’s
Day, 1926, that the news finally reaches the outside world…GOLD
DISCOVERED IN RED LAKE!
Soon, North America’s last great Gold Rush is on. Prospectors flock from
across North America and beyond, including sourdoughs from the
Yukon.
During the rush of 1926, more than 3,000 men drive dog teams or walk the frozen rivers and lakes
north to Red Lake in search of their fortunes. They endure many nights of wind, snow and cold before they arrive
at the tents that make up Red Lake base camp.
When spring comes, they switch to canoe or boat – and the new flying machines. Red Lake marks the first time
that airplanes have been used in mining exploration and development.
Eventually the bush plane comes to dominate travel to the goldfields and during the summer of 1936 Red Lake
sees more landings and take-offs than any other airport in the world.
Attractions
It is a unique and special transportation system that will last until a road to Red Lake is opened in 1947.

But most of the heavy freight still gets pulled in to Red Lake. It comes by sleighs and tractor trains in the winter.
In the summer it is loaded on to scows and pulled by tugboats or hoisted around falls and rapids by an extensive
series of marine railways.

The park offers over 2,000 kilometres of lakes and
rivers to explore by canoe, where it is quite likely you
will never encounter another human. You will, however,
encounter moose, black bear, beaver, bald eagles, and a
multitude of other birds, and, if you are lucky, you might
even spot a woodland caribou, lynx, or timber wolf.

The Berens River can be paddled from its headwaters
north of Red Lake, west to Lake Winnipeg and presents
some of the best white water in the region. The English
River follows the route that the Coureur de Bois and
the Hudson’s Bay men travelled during the height of the
fur trade in the late 1700s. The Park is also home to the
largest concentration of pictographs in the Canadian
Shield, estimated to be 800 to 1,200 years old.
