Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. ̶ The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution Emagn: illustration Stini: words I m sure that everyone has gotten over the fact that Howard Stern has moved to Sirius. I m positive that everyone is over the whole Janet Jackson Titty Committee. Yes, these are the stories of 04, but as we venture into the second half of 2005, I thought I would arm myself with some important information about censorship. Here s what I found: The issue goes much deeper than Jadakiss using his voice to hold Bush accountable ( why did Bush knock down the towers ). It is actually the decision of the radio stations to edit out much material as that in Jadakiss Why? Just as Jadakiss has the right to express his opinion, the radio stations have the right to edit or not play music that they find offensive. The only infringement of rights would be if the government stepped in and banned the song from being on the airwaves. In 2001, the FCC issued guidelines saying that innuendo and context ARE factors in determining whether a record violates its decency standards, regardless of the specific words language that, in context, depicts or THELEGEND magazine I 8 describes, in terms patently offensive as measured by contemporary community standards for the broadcast medium, sexual or excretory activities or organs. This, however, is a broad statement and leaves much to interpretation. Point in case: I have heard plenty of unedited songs on 93.7 that use the same language that is being edited in songs on 103.5- What s the difference between some guy screaming, We ll kick their asses! on a rock station versus on a hip hop station? Why can Adam Sandler sing, …Smoke your marijuanica, but Snoop can t say anything about Chronic? Again, it is the decision of the radio stations to edit out such material, and the decision of the FCC whether or not the radio station will get fined for what they play. Are certain music genres edited more than others because of the context or because of personal opinion of the genre itself? Does censorship protect the people or promote conformity of thought? I guess I have a lot more research to do..... platinum pied pipers Trading in their wooden recorders for a beat machine and a keyboard, the Platinum Pied Pipers are the truth. Leaving a sea of fans in the wake of every radio play, stage performance, or download, Wajeed and Sadiq are the past, present, and future of great music. Rai-mon Barnes: interview Legend: Your record company said something in the material about classifying you guys as the future of black soul hip-hop music . Wajeed: See now, they got categories within categories. That s part of the problem in general. That s how they bottle shit up and sell it. People are always asking me to define what I think our music is. That s the reason we made the album the way we did. We didn t want people to call it a soul album or hip-hop album or whatever. It s just good fucking music at the end of the day. I mean it s like what s gangsta rap. People can just put category on category until they miss the point. The point is not to label it. Enjoy it. Stop talking about it and just shut up and listen. Legend: How did you come to your own style? What was your journey like developing who you are as a musician? Wajeed: I think it s an endless journey. I m still looking for the perfect beat. It s really that simple. What is the perfect beat, and how you define it? The journey on the way to it--the process is important. I m still developing. I still THELEGEND magazine I 10 don t know how to put it all together. I m still trying to get that perfect song. Legend: Do the artists help bring different things out of you? Wajeed: That s definately a big part of the puzzle. The artist, and them coming in. I am a control freak to some degree. I just let the tracks speak to people. Whatever direction it shoots them in. I just like referee. Make sure it doesn t go out of bounds. You only fit inside the ring. I pretty much just play referee on this album. Just let people do what they felt. Adjust it accordingly. Most of the tracks you hear on the album are not the ones they recorded on. It s really produced. Legend: You ve worked with artists from overseas and domestic artists. Is there a difference? Wajeed: It s different for sure. Cats from the states are more hit oriented. They want to make hit records and sometimes that gets in the way of the process. Cats from overseas just want to make a statement. They don t want to get caught up the first single supposed to be 96 bpms let us play 8 bars and… they just jump in. Get they feet wet. As opposed to the salesmanship, they re not as concerned as cats from the states, at least in my experience. Legend: The state of emcees nowadays, I see people talk about the soul movement in hip hop but not Legend: If you had to pick the legend in your mind. Who is it? Wajeed: Chuck D is a legend, what didn t he do in regards to the statement about himself and his people. I try to keep all that in mind. A lot of really attribute it to any culture. Do you think that is a detriment? Wajeed: Yea I can definately say that. I m one of those people too, I m not the cat that s grandmaster flash cause I m a dj. But I know how important it is for his contributions in order for me to have a job. People lose the history in it. They say, It doesn t really matter . No it does matter. Not even just for sound in general. I think everyone could use a huge history lesson. I think a lot of these young cats that come into the game ain t really paid no dues... stop runnin they mouth. And I think it would make a lot of these caucasian singers out here that suck that sell a lot of albums stop trying to sing like Chaka Kahn. things that Chuck and Enemy have done I tried to emulate in this record. It might not sound like it but I tried to. He wasn t cussin like crazy all over the record (where you would have to go turn the volume down cause your grandmom was in the room). Why Chuck D? Cause they did it and made a revolution look like it wasn t a revolution. And that s what we re trying to do. We want to prioritize people over property. There s something deeper under the surface and I equate Chuck D to that. Cats from the states are more hit oriented. They want to make hit records and sometimes that gets in the way of the process. THELEGEND magazine I 11 GrandTheftAuto NorCal Word coffee Link: words Emagn: illustration What is it about a place that sells coffee and pastries that draws in the masses like a Billy Joel/ Eminem collabo? I didn t even drink coffee two months ago, and now I find it hard to resist that white mocha at least twice a day. So once I have both in hand, and there s some (substitute your favorite mellow jam in here) playing in the back, it s basically time to sit exactly where the hell you are and not move for a good three hours. Dammit, there must be crack in that coffee. No doubt, that s what it is...crack. No....I take it back. It s weed. How am I sure? Because every time I get the coffee, I have to have something to eat right after... pastry, dessert, sandwich, hard-ass bread-deal covered in chocolate, it don t matter. Two weeks later, you re getting off of your day job and noticing that you have a headache. This might be a normal occurrence for those who get headaches often, but you notice that your remedy to the headache is to head toward the coffee shop. Dammit, it s crack!!! Do you guys serve decaf? Cambodian Holiday: words Sk8mafia: pic Legend: So, tell us a little about how you got started boosting cars? Boostie McBoost: I stole my first car when I was 16 or 17. The initial rush you get with your first car is indescribable. I quickly realized I would be stealing cars for a long time (although I don t anymore). I spent the better part of eight years perfecting the art. L: How does the process work from the time you snatch a vehicle to when you walk away with a fistful of dollars? BMc: Heh, this could be seriously incriminating if I were to go into detail, so lets just say I get the car, take it to the drop, get handed an envelope with cash in it, and go home. L: Ever take a date out in a car you just stole? BMc: I did once when I was still a novice. She was my girlfriend at the time. Of course, I didn t tell her the car was hot...but I m pretty sure she had her suspicions. I don t usually get my women involved with the car business, only trusted friends. THELEGEND magazine I 12 L: Naturally you re going to go for Hondas, but are there any other cars you d go for simply on account of the challenge? BMc: I never really wanted too much of a challenge. I mean when people buy a Ferrari, or a BMW Z-3 they keep them locked, with a club, in a locked garage. Too much trouble. Besides, if I called my hookup and told him I had a 2004 Ferrari, he would probably laugh at me. These people want conventional cars, such as Hondas, and Toyotas. L: Not everyone is bulletproof, especially in your line of work. When did you first get caught? BMc: I first got caught shortly after I turned 18 (figures, huh?) I had no record at the time, so they gave me probation. Through my career as a car thief, I realized that it s not so much the cops you gotta worry about, but the people you re stealing from. I ve been shot at twice. Let me tell you, when you re running around at night for several hours being stealth and silent, and then a shotgun goes off randomly in your direction, it can be some scary shit. I thought I was gonna have a heart attack. THELEGEND magazine I 13 Xiu Xiu on their sound, sexuality, and La Foret Adam James Healton: words Drew Reynolds: pic Over the past few years, Jamie Stewart and an ever growing cast of collaborators have been impressing the hell out of critics and fans alike with a sound all their own. The band: Xiu Xiu (pronounced shoe-shoe ) still in the midst of an extensive US tour and still putting the finishing touches on their fifth and latest release, La Foret. Legend: How would you describe Xiu Xiu s music? Jamie: There are really five styles of music that we draw from a lot. The first one is eighties British pop stuff like the Cure, the Smiths, New Order, Joy Division, 20th century modern classical music, Asian percussion music like Gamelan, Kabuki, and Korean and Chinese folk music. Dance music like dance and high energy, and noise and experimental music. Legend: What s going on in your head when you sit down and hit the record button? Do have any idea how the song is going to come out? THELEGEND magazine I 14 Jamie: We definately have an idea of what the song is going to be about and some kind of rough idea about what the arrangement will be like in terms of instrumentation and things like that, but as far as how it actually turns out in the end, usually it s kind of a surprise. Legend: I heard of one instrument you guys made out of vibrators. How did that come about? Jamie: Kind of on accident actually. We were recording and I did it just as a joke just to try to gross out one of my more prudish fellow band mates. I just took a vibrator and put it in a jar with a bunch of little pieces of plastic in it. It ended up sounding really interesting. Legend: Is your musical experimentation more of a conscious effort or does it just happen naturally? Jamie: Well definately a lot of the artists that we re listening to have been involved in experimentation. Everything they ve done has been influential on us. We re definately trying to create sound. We re always trying to experiment and try and approach things without repeating ourselves. Legend: The song Support our troops (oh!) grabbed a lot of attention from reporters and listeners, obviously. How do you feel about pretty unsure of people s reactions to it. we have not heard before. Legend: How has the gay community accepted your music? Jamie: Well, I m bi, not gay, so I definately ally Xiu Xiu with more of the queer community including bi, transgender, lesbian and gay. the reaction you ve gotten from that track? Jamie: It s hard to say just because I m way too self-conscious about it. I don t read a lot of press. I mean, people ask me about that song in almost every single interview but as far as how people have reacted to it, I don t really know. I mean, generally, during interviews, journalists don t say what their own reaction was to it, they just ask about it. So I m It s hard to say, I mean, we ve had a lot of people who are queer interested in it. The point of Xiu Xiu doesn t exist to be a homocore band but the point is to write about the lives of the people in the band and queerness is certainly a part of that and it s something that we re very open and clear about. I just took a vibrator and put it in a jar with a bunch of little pieces of plastic in it. It ended up sounding really interesting. Does that make sense? The opening night reception on April 7 was epic, with more than 1,000 people viewing and buying art, and dancing to the music of DJs Shaun Slaughter and Ray Potes (Hamburger Eyes), and Sacramento’s Hearts & Horses (side project of hometown favorites Park Avenue Music). On the opening night of the show, several artists sold out of their entire installations and were asked to bring more artwork into the gallery, which also sold out quickly. At one point during the evening, I spoke with one of the managers of the gallery who excitedly told me that the show was, by far, the most successful and interesting show the gallery had seen in many months. The Ultramega collective was formed last year by three Sacramento artists: Aaron Winters, Jay Howell and Skinner. The underlining purpose of the collective has been to get the word out about Sacramento’s great, hardworking artists, and to see that they continue to show their work all over the state, country and world. In addition to the three aforementioned artists, the 111 Minna show featured the work of other members of the collective, including: Adrienne Yan, Garin Moore, Blamo!, Judd Hertzler, Mike Rafter, Jef Melendez, Kevin Price, Jairus, Keli Ruele, Robert Bower, Mick Sheldon and John Berger. In May, many of the artists who took part in the Worse Case Scenario show were featured in a show entitled “If You Do Me, I’ll Do You” at the amazing new Fools Foundation gallery (1025 19th Street, in the basement behind the Old Spaghetti Factory). This show had 30 artists do a looselydefined “portrait” of another artist in the group, and the outcome was truly breathtaking. UltraMega 111 MINNA STREET GALLERY, SF THELEGEND magazine I 28 In mid- July Sacramento’s own Toyroom Gallery (in the alley behind 2419 2nd Avenue) will feature Jeremy Fish (San Francisco, Unbeliever Skateboards), as well as work by Sacramento artists Jay Howell, Judd Hertzler and Garin Moore. Jay Howell and Ultramega helmsman Aaron Winters will follow this up with a group show at the Voice 1156 Gallery in San Diego in mid-August. We weren t in Kansas anymore, that s for sure. There were space gigolos, aliens, and Lovemakers everywhere. It was a land beyond hope and fear. They called it: Outer space night at Old Ironsides. I called it, unbelievable! They have the kind of bands that make you want to dance instead of mosh, and dance we did to the Lovemakers version of Erotica. The Lovemakers made the whole night worthwhile. Never having heard this Bay Area band, who recently signed to Interscope, it was nice to catch them before they Blow The Hell Up. From crazy guitar tricks to erotic near mouth to mouth contact this band reminds its audience why you pay to see them live. Shaun does it again. Tell all the space gigolos THELEGEND sent you. THELEGEND magazine I 30 Imagine this, live soulful music, dimmed lights and beautiful people sitting back and enjoying the atmosphere. Hmm… Seems like the ending scene from New York Undercover, huh? (Sorry folks this is not New York, and this show was not scripted for TV). Thanks to 56 Entertainment and Twelves Wax, for bringing the city it s first installment of The Summer Soulstice Series . Events like this show that Sacramento is finally doing grown folks business. The first series featured Detroit s very own Dwele, and guests such as: Jasper, Selau, and the Mahogany Urban Poets. Host and local comedian Cory Crenshaw kept the crowd entertained between each set with his humor. He and I were both in awe of the beautiful women that came to the show. What impressed me the most outside of Dwele s performance, were the readings by the Mahogany Urban Poets. In the midst of ongoing crowd interaction, the poets held strong and conveyed their message of love, struggle and unity. Once they finished their set, it was time for headlining performer Dwele to hit the stage. From the beginning, he graced the crowd with a positive vibe, and before long he was doing a few hits from his debut album Subject . From a lady s perspective, he was definately a crowd pleaser. Dwele actually gave chocolate covered strawberries to random women in the crowd. To end this sensational night, Dwele gave his band an opportunity to introduce themselves, and that is exactly what they did. In their own unique style, each member blew the crowd away. For those who didn t know who Dwele was before the show, they definately know who he is now. dropHeavy Mikey J: words Johnny Xaysana: pic 21+ Drum and Bass events have been a long time in the making for the city of Sacramento and it now takes the form of Drop Heavy© at Club Silk. Keeping it true to form, club Drop Heavy remains consistent in its civic duty: providing the city with fucked up breaks, and bass lines that make you want to shake a baby really hard right now. While the attendance on the evening was mild, the music pumping from the systems was feverish. Representing an eclectic range of sounds, DJ s spanning the coastal region of both the left and right brought it as smooth as the venues name. If it s one thing Drop Heavy does not lack, its an ability to produce a Dj s Dj.
