When I broke into the work of educating children 18 years ago, I believed that I could
save the world. I believed that if we could provide every student with a well-rounded,
high quality education, the world would be a much better place. I’ve evolved a lot over
the years and understand that there other factors (health care, job opportunities, housing,
nutrition, etc.) that play a role in upward trajectories for people. However, my passion
and belief that education is the life line for our children is STRONGER THAN EVER!!

The month of May kicks off celebrating educator appreciation week. I want everyone
reading this piece to jog your memory and think about all the adults in your educational
experience that positively influenced your life: the custodian, the cook, the history
teacher, the woodshop teacher, the Special Education assistant, the school counselor, the
assistant principal, and even coaches. What would your education have been without
them and countless other professionals who cared within the walls of your schools???
As we go into the home stretch of the year, I want to personally thank ALL of the
AMAZING staff at Georgia O’Keeffe Middle School for creating a school that is aiming
to positively change the lives of children. Without this dedicated group of professionals,
the world would be a little different.
Please help me in showing our staff some appreciation for a job well done. We are not
perfect, but I truly believe that the spirit and urgency of our staff is alive, and like the
young Tony Dugas of yester years, believes that we can save the world, one student at a
time. With your support and partnership, I know we can.
Thank you everyone and let’s make this last month of school fantastically positive.
Sincerely,
Tony Dugas, your principal

Volunteer to make 8th grade promotion fun for students and families
Planning is under way for the 8th grade promotion breakfast, evening recognition ceremony and dance on June 8,
2016, and we need volunteers to make this a fun and memorable time for students and families moving on to high
school.
6th and 7th grade parents -- we particularly need your help so that 8th grade parents can enjoy the festivities
with their students. 8th-grade parents -- we encourage you to participate however your time allows, but most
especially by making sure your child has submitted a photograph for the slideshow before the promotion
ceremony. Email photos to [email protected]
Find a volunteer duty that fits your interests and time availability
There are a wide range of volunteer opportunities of differing time commitments. Find one that suits your
interests and available time. Help pull the events together in coming weeks or, if you prefer, bring a dessert for the
evening reception or volunteer for an hour or two on promotion day.

Dear Parents and Guardians,
On June 7th, students will be taking a field trip to Mount Olympus in the Wisconsin Dells. The field trip is a
fun day away to build community and celebrate our successful academic school year.
The cost of the trip is $25, which includes the Mount Olympus fee, a lunch, and the bus. The $25 and the
signed permission slip must be turned into your child’s homeroom teacher by May 6 to ensure your child
gets a wristband to access Mount Olympus. All wristbands need to be preordered for this field trip.
At O’Keeffe, 50% of our community qualifies for free/reduced lunch, but 100% of our community deserves to
celebrate their success! Over the next few months, there will be several O’Keeffe fundraisers to ensure we
have 100% attendance.
On June 7th, we will leave O’Keeffe at 8:30 for Mount Olympus. All students must ride the bus and no
private transportation should be arranged. Students will need to bring appropriate attire for indoor and
outdoor water parks, as well as, indoor and outdoor theme parks. There is food available to be purchased at
additional cost. Lockers can be rented for $10 plus tax. We will arrive back at O’Keeffe at 3:30 and
students can ride the late bus home.
Students must demonstrate daily respectful behaviors to attend the trip. This includes no out of school
suspensions for 4th quarter.
If you have questions regarding the trip, please contact Tracy Warnacke at [email protected]
or Katie Magyera at [email protected].
Return money and permission slip to your Homeroom teacher no later than May 6.

Incoming 6th Graders: Welcome to O’Keeffe Middle School!
O’Keeffe Middle School is pleased to welcome incoming 6th graders and their parents for the 2016-2017 school
year. Our 6th grade parent information night was held on Wednesday, April 20th at 7:00 p.m. in the
O’Keeffe/Marquette Cafeteria. Parents and students had the opportunity to meet school staff, view an
orientation slide presentation, learn about classes and extracurricular activities, and ask questions.
After the parent meeting, there are additional orientation activities that are more student-centered. On the
morning of Tuesday, May 17, 5th graders from Marquette will visit O’Keeffe. Students from Lowell and
Hawthorne will visit on the morning of Thursday, May 19. As part of the student orientation, all 5th graders will
be given a tour of O’Keeffe , view an orientation slide presentation, and have the opportunity to ask questions
to a panel of current students.
Starting Middle School is a big step. The staff at O’Keeffe is committed to helping new students and parents as
they make this important transition. If you have questions, please call the O’Keeffe School Counselor, Paul
Chotlos 204-6828 or [email protected]. If you would prefer to communicate questions in Spanish,
call Magda Coll-Palombi at 204-6868.
Notice for Children with Medicine at School
Parents are responsible for picking up all medication by the end of the school
year. Please stop by the health office to pick up left over medication for your
child.
The health office can NOT store medications over the summer. Leftover medication will be
destroyed. (Only epipens, diabetes supplies, and inhalers may be sent home in your child’s
backpack).
SUMMER SCHOOL medications: If your child will be attending summer school, these
medications will automatically be given to the summer school health office and do not need to
be picked up.
If your child will need medication again next year, we need new forms signed by the parent and
doctor next fall. Both a parent permission form and a physician order form are required.
These forms are available on the internet at: www.madison.k12.wi.us/cso/health/ You can
also take care of this when you register your child in August.
Please contact Mary Hutchinson, School Nurse, by phone: 204-3235, or by email:
[email protected] , or Amanda Harford, Nurse’s Assistant by phone
204-3227, or by email: [email protected] with any questions or concerns.

MEASLES, MUMPS, PERTUSSIS, OH MY!
For the safety of all of the children, our vaccination rate needs to be at 90-95%. Currently, Marquette is at 86.6 %
and O’Keeffe is at 89.4%.
The Dane County Public Health Nurse visited me last year to discuss concerns about the levels of immunization protection at
our school. In order to keep the public safe, the immunization rate should be at 90% or greater. We were, and we continue to
be below that level; not because we haven’t been diligent in reaching out to parents but because too many parents have
chosen to sign a waiver to excuse their children from immunizations, most based on old information. With the increase in the
cases of pertussis, mumps and measles in Wisconsin and nationwide, the CDC is urging parents to reconsider their decision
not to immunize their child.
·
In the last few years, many infants have died from pertussis and mumps and measles have returned.
·
As of November 2015, 12 students at UW Whitewater have confirmed cases of mumps, and “several” cases” were
reported by UW Madison in January of 2016. Several other universities also have reported mumps on their campuses.
·
Before the routine measles vaccination, rates of measles cases were high. There used to be about 500,000 cases of
measles and high rates of complications from those cases, including about 500 measles deaths each year in the United States.
In 2014, there were 648 cases of measles, which was a 20-year high. Thankfully, that went down considerably in 2015, with
189 cases reported. Often, outbreaks are attributed to foreign travelers coming to the United States.
After the last big measles outbreak in 1989 and the introduction of the MMR booster dose in 1994, cases of measles have
dropped. In 2000, it was even declared that the endemic spread of measles in the United States had ended, and continued
cases were all imported from outside the U.S. Unfortunately, imported measles cases can and does trigger small measles
outbreaks in people who are at risk for measles, including those who are unvaccinated or under-vaccinated. This includes:
 Infants who are too young to get their first dose of MMR

Toddlers and preschoolers who are too young to get their booster dose of MMR

Children who have a problem with their immune system, and so either can't get the MMR vaccine or had the MMR
vaccines but they don't work effectively because they are immunocompromised, such as children who are receiving
chemotherapy for cancer.

Older adults with weak or compromised immune systems.
If you chose not to immunize your child:
·
Your child will be at greater risk of getting the disease.
·
Your unvaccinated child may become an infectious disease threat to others, especially to children and adults who can’t
be immunized for medical reasons. Your unvaccinated child could potentially pass on the disease to babies at our school
who are too young to be immunized, or who were very recently immunized.
·
Your child will be excluded from school or childcare for two weeks if a measles case is identified at school.
The Madison Public Health Department and Madison Metropolitan schools strongly urge you to immunize your children.
Your decision not only affects your child, but the community at large!
For the safety of all of the children, our vaccination rate needs to be at 90-95%. Currently, Marquette is at 86.6 %
and O’Keeffe is at 89.4%.

Book Swap
Does your child have a pile of books sitting around that they have already read?
Do you wish you had the opportunity to exchange them for more exciting reading materials?
The Book Swap is coming to O’Keeffe!
How It Works
From May 16 to May 20 students may bring in any “gently used” books to the O’Keeffe Library Media Center for donation.
We will track the number and type of books brought in by each student, and issue a Swap Ticket.
Be sure to carefully read the Book Criteria section of this document.
From May 31 to June 2 students may select any “gently used” books of their choice based on the number of books they
turned in and the type of book donated. For example, if a student turns in 2 books of middle school interest and 1 picture
book/easy reader, they may only select 2 books of middle school interest and 1 picture book/easy reader. This ensures that
everyone is exchanging in a fair manner.
The selection of books available will depend on the books donated; we cannot guarantee any particular titles.
Book Criteria
Please make choices carefully before bringing in books. Books will only be accepted under the following guidelines:
● Books must be in gently used condition: cover on, no rips, tears, or bent edges
● Books must have no markings including being written or colored in
● Books must be of interest to students at O’Keeffe - there will be two categories available for swapping - books of
middle school interest and easy reader/picture book
● Please be sure that you are not swapping books that are family treasures!
★ Students will be limited to selecting 5 books from the swap. More books may be donated to the swap, but the Swap
Ticket will only be issued for a maximum of 5 books.
★ If a student does not have a book to swap, they have the opportunity to use one Tiger Ticket to to select one book
from the swap (you can only do this exchange once).
If you have questions, please contact Kelli Ballwahn at [email protected].

Learning Experiences Beyond the Classroom
Are you looking for a summer experience for your student that
could help them continue their learning, develop their skills,
and expand their knowledge? Maybe you are curious about
the logistics of studying in another country during the
summer, school year, or gap year. Do you have a student with
a sense of adventure who loves the outdoors, being physically
active, or wants to excel in a sport? Is your student interested
in volunteering, working, or getting an internship in order to
explore a career or build their sense of commitment and
responsibility? Are you looking for ways for your student to
visit college campuses and possibly earn credit in the process?
Visit Learning Experiences Beyond the Classroom to get a
start or explore options you hadn’t thought of. Scholarships
and financial aid are available for a number of opportunities
included on the website. NEW: Search by career interest
and grade level!
Are you moving, or have you moved this year?
If you have moved or plan on moving outside of your school's attendance area between September 1, 2015,
and August 31, 2016, you may need to fill out an internal transfer application in order for your child to continue to
attend the same school or feeder school for the upcoming school year. To find your new attendance area, use
the Find Your School tool online or contact your child's school.
The Internal Transfer window opens May 2 and closes at 4pm on May 20. We encourage you to apply during this
first round to receive preference even if you are not planning to move until the summer. Everyone that applies
during the first round will find out if they were approved or wait listed by July 1. All other applications will be
finalized by August 25.

S.O.S: SUPPORT O’KEEFFE SCHOOL!
Dear O’Keeffe Families,
Thank you for supporting our wonderful school in so many ways – attending music
concerts, PTG meetings, sending in snacks for Teacher Appreciation Week, scooping ice
cream, contributing to the silent auction, volunteering in the classroom, or (most
importantly) doing your best to support your child at home.
This year the PTG is struggling to cover the costs of all the community- building events
and initiatives it supports. We are asking for any financial support you can give.

The PTG collects Box Tops for Education
throughout the year as one of its fundraising
projects. You can be an important “donor” to this
effort simply by clipping those bright pink box tops
from General Mills products and dropping them off
in the gold-foiled “Box Tops for Education” box in
the O’Keeffe main office. Thanks for your help! If
you have any questions or want us to stop by and
pick up your Box Tops, just contact Sheila Lenius at
[email protected].
