When we asked our readers what they like when it comes to entertainment, things during the day to make them smile or where to go to get help, they responded. One thing we know is that our readers like to eat and they all have a favorite spot. Just drive by either place and you’ll see why Pointer Cafe, Mineral Point and Country Kitchen, Dodgeville were the top vote getters this year. Also getting votes were restaurants reaching from Mineral Point to Barneveld, including Pleasant Ridge which is found outside Dodgeville in a peaceful country setting. and is also known for its tasty custard. Best Dinner Bob’s Bitchin’ BBQ also won this category and for proof, notice the parking areas in downtown Dodgeville, or rather the lack of them, Tuesday through Sunday evenings. Bob’s draws people from all over so having someone you know at the next table can be hit or miss. A short drive into the beautiful Southwest Wisconsin countryside is needed to get to the second place winner which is Ludden Lake Golf Course and Supper Club, rural Mineral Point. Best Buffet If a buffet is your choice for good food and selection this area has that too. Winning the Best Buffet category is Pizza Best Salad Maybe you have that feeling that a salad will do for a meal so don’t worry, this area has places for that. The Best Salad Bar distinction for this year’s competition goes to Pizza Hut of Dodgeville. The second place winner in this category is Tower Junction which is located between Cobb and Montfort. Their salad bar features soups and salads all freshly prepared. Thank you voting us... Coming in second is Country Kitchen, Dodgeville, where you will find a good selection for you to try. Move on to the noon hour and many people stop for food and leisure. This year the Best Lunch is found at Bob’s Bitchin’ BBQ in downtown Dodgeville. Bob’s serves a complete menu at lunch and a tip from those who eat there is get there early. Coming in second is one of the area’s fast food restaurants that features a sit down area and an extensive menu. Our readers say the best place to buy cheese in the area is from the Hook’s Cheese Company in Mineral Point. Hook’s Cheese is frequently in the news either winning awards with their cheese or with offering aged cheddar which has been aged further than anyone else has tried. The selection of cheeses at Shurman’s Wisconsin Cheese in Dodgeville is good enough to get the votes for second place. Best Coffee Coffee time. Take it to work, or in your car when you have miles to drive or just have a break from your busy day. You will find it here and enjoyment is guaranteed. Winning first place in the Best Coffee category is Kwik Trip with area locations in Dodgeville and Mineral Point. Their coffee bar features selections to meet any taste....flavored, regular, Columbian, dark roast and others. Second place goes to a new face among Dodgeville businesses which offers a wide variety of coffee, both warm and cold. That distinction goes to Cobblestone Coffee House in the building in downtown Dodgeville that Dennis Marklein has developed as a great addi- tion to the community. Best French Fries When it comes to the Best French Fries, we’ll bet no one can eat just one. Our readers like McDonald’s French Fries the best and the fast food chain has worked to make them healthier when it comes to the oil they use. Our readers also say the French Fries that can be ordered at Culver’s are also good to the taste. Second place goes to the resturant that got its start in Sauk City. Best Steak Got that hunger for a good steak cooked to perfection? This year the Best Steak can be found at Ludden Lake, Golf Course and Supper Club, rural Mineral Point, according to our readers. Second place in the Best Steak category goes to Tower Junction, between Cobb and Montfort. Our readers also mentioned seven other places they visit to get their “beef” on. Best Pizza It can be comfort food or just a tasty meal. We are talking about the Best Pizza the food choice when the craving hits. Winning the distinction of Best Pizza is Dodgeville’s Pizza Hut. Second place goes to Tower Junction between Cobb and Montfort, a place guaranteed to make your mouth water as you go over their menu. Best Produce Deptartment Our voters have chosen the Best Produce Department to be found at Piggly Wiggly in Dodgeville. The selection is fresh and extensive. They also feel the produce at Wal-Mart is good and that is why they received the second most votes. Five other businesses received votes in this category. Second place goes to Point Foods at Mineral Point which carries a wide selection of great meat. Best Bakery How about some bread, pie, cake, cookies or another sweet treat for dessert? Go to the Best Bakery selected by our voters. That distinction goes to Quality Bakery, downtown Dodgeville, a staple in the community for three generations. Second place goes to the bakery at Wal-Mart. Both businesses will make custom orders. Three other businesses received votes in this category. Best Locally Made Food Product How about an appetizer? This is Wisconsin and the words are Cheese Please. Winning the Best Locally Made Food Product is Hook’s Cheese of Mineral Point. Second place went to the sauces on the tables at Bob’s Bitchin’ BBQ. Other businesses getting votes included food items such as popcorn, cupcakes, wines and many others. Fun Categories Best Bowling Alley Bowling is a popular sport in Wisconsin and no doubt throughout the nation. This year, Dodger Bowl Lanes is the winner in this category. There is a bar, restaurant, large banquet hall and modern, well-kept lanes and is located at the north end of Dodgeville. Second place went to Midway Lanes between Dodgeville and Mineral Point which features a bar and restaurant along with bowling. Tower Junction, Montfort, Bob's Electric is proud to serve the area for 68 years! Thank you to all for selecting us the area’s and Countryside Lanes, Hollandale, also received votes this year. Best Happy Hour Check out the happy hours at area establishments, especially the winner of the Best Happy Hour category. That distinction in the new category goes to Duke’s Brew Pub and Alehouse, downtown Dodgeville. See Jay Lindner and his staff for your favorite beverage. Second place goes to the bar where Tony Pittz works his magic cooking, pouring or joking with the customers. That would be Tony’s Tap Bar and Grill, Mineral Point. Dino’s in Dodgeville and The Wheel Bar in Ridgeway also received votes for places to stop. Best Golf Course Time to play a round of golf? Our voters who swing a club for nine or 18 holes have chosen Dodge Point Country Club and Golf Course located between Dodgeville and Mineral Point as this year’s Best Golf Course. Second place went to Deer Valley Golf Course, located in Barneveld. The course also features 18 holes and has a bar in the club house. Best Venue GE® ENERGY STAR® 27.7 Cu. Ft. French-Door Refrigerator GFE28HMHES #1 Best in Appliance Care “For over 68 years” The Best Venue category had several nominations but the voters favored American Players Theater (APT) between Dodgeville and Spring Green. APT features both indoor and outdoor productions. The Dodger Bowl Banquet Hall received the second most votes. The hall is a popular meeting place and is available for weddings, reunions, meetings and about anything you want. Care category chose Joan Hoernke of Bear N Bee Family Salon in Dodgeville as the best for nail care. Michelle Seyfferth at A Touch Above in Springate Mall, Dodgeville was the choice for second place. There were five other choices nominated, including Desiree’s of Mineral Point and Xpressions, of Dodgeville. Best Hair Salon The Best Hair Salon category shows that there are many good places to go for hair care as over ten businesses were nominated. The winner is Jan’s Hair Design of Dodgeville. Second place goes to Hair Unlimited, also of Mineral Point. Best Bar For a relaxing place to go to meet friends and have a drink our voters chose the Best Bar to do this. That would be Tony’s Tap Bar and Grill in Mineral Point which serves daily noon specials and a Friday fish fry. Second place goes to Duke’s Brew Pub and Alehouse in Dodgeville which features occasional entertainment nights. Dino’s Bar in Dodgeville was a very close third. Other vote getters included The Wheel Bar, Ridgeway, and Sheddy’s, Montfort. Best Local Event Events are ways groups and organizations make money and serve the community. Voters gave the honor of Best Local Event for 2015 to Farmers Appreciation Day in Dodgeville. The July event draws many people to the area to salute the people who feed the nation. The Iowa County Fair in Mineral Point received the second most votes, giving agriculture a sweep in the voting. Best Park Sometimes a day in the park is needed for a mental health break, or a place to take the kids, or a place to sit in the gentle breeze, enjoy the sunshine and read. Winning the Best Park category this year is Harris Park in Dodgeville. The massages given at Upland Hills Health in Dodgeville finished second. Nikki McDonald, Dodgeville and Massage Works, Belmont, also received votes. Best Campground Is camping your thing? If it is there are several great options in the area which feature some of the most beautiful scenery in Wisconsin, including this year’s Best Campground winner, Governor Dodge State Park, rural Dodgeville. Finishing second is Blackhawk Lake, rural Highland. Kid’s Section Best Fast Food In the Best Of competition. kids also have their say. Where do kids like to go for fast food? The winner of the Best Fast Food category is Culver’s of Dodgeville. Second place was garnered by McDonald’s, also of Dodgeville. Best Teacher Great teachers whether in elementary, middle, high school or college, have affected all of us in one way or another. This year, our readers gave the honor of Best Teacher to the late Luke Wiegel, who taught science at the Dodgeville Middle School. He was a caring teacher and a positive coach. Unfortunately, Luke Wiegel passed away August 14. He is missed. Second place in the teaching category goes to Mineral Point second grade teacher Denise Gorgen. Lots of other area teachers were also nominated in this category.
