Gary Lewis : Superintendent/President
Welcome to Shasta College and our long and rich tradition in
Intercollegiate Athletics. We are proud of the role we play in the
development and success of our student athletes. Shasta College
is committed to the values of the California Community College
Commission on Athletics: Student Health and Welfare, Academic
Success, Ethical Conduct, Recognition of Excellence, Gender
Equity, and Non-Discrimination.
I cherish my 33 years at Shasta College. For 21 years, I was the
college’s Track & Field, Cross Country coach, and an instructor
in the Business Department. I also spent six years in athletic
administration. During this time, I gained great respect for the character, commitment and
success of our student athletes. Their achievements were made possible by our dedicated
and highly qualified coaches, faculty, staff and administration. All of us at Shasta College
recognize and appreciate the tremendous community support of our athletic program.
Good luck to our athletes, teams, coaches and support staff. Thank you to all who have
contributed to the quality and success of Shasta College Athletics!

Shasta College is very proud of our fields and
grounds staff. These dedicated professionals
are responsible for keeping all of our athletic
fields in top shape. With the challenges of
extreme summer heat and cold winters, the
job of preparing the fields for competition is
a very demanding one. The “grounds crew”
is definitely part of our Athletic Department
team. They take great pride in their work and it
shows in everything they do. Piictured from

Outlook 2010
Men’s Team:
The men look to be young, but willing
to work hard. The team will be led by
Sebastian O’Bergin (Ukiah), who finished in
the top five at the Golden Valley Conference
(GVC) and went on to the state meet. As the
10k GVC Champion last spring Sebastian
should be one of the top runners in the
north state. He will be joined by Dillon
Collins (Foothill) who shows great promise
in the early workouts. Rounding out the
men’s team are Brandon Sergeeff (Foothill
High School), Reece Wilson (Shasta High
School), and Jeff Langevin (Ukiah High
School) who are new to the sport and will
do fine as newcomers. Eduardo Salinas
(Saddleback) is making a comeback after a
nineteen year layoff.
Women’s Team:
The women should be able to defend their
GVC title, and do well at the Nor Cal
Track & Field Championships. Bethany
Rasmussen (Redding Christian High
SchoolS) should be one of the top lady
runners in the state since she was the Nor
Cal 10k champion last track season. She
will be pushed by Brit March (Etna High
School), who runs with a lot of heart.
Abigail Zufelt (Etna High School) returns
from last year’s team and is off to a very
good start. Nichole Schaller (Foothill High
School), Abbrieana Reyna (Foothill High
School) and Misty Jenson (West Valley High
School) are track ladies that will add the
depth we need. Chelsey Anderson (Shasta
High School) and Heather Wilson (Shasta
High School) are first time cross country
people that are working very hard.

Football
Outlook 2010
The 2010 Knights enter the season with a
chip on their shoulder because of the bitter
disappointment over how the 2009 season
ended. The 2009 Knights played College of
the Redwoods in the last game of the season
for the Bay Valley Conference (B.V.C.)
Championship, and came away with a
heart breaking defeat. Coach Thompson
reflected on the 2009 season by saying,
“I really wish we could have finished our
season with a victory, and secured the
B.V.C Championship. It was a team goal,
and equally important, it would have given
our 2009 Sophomore class back-to-back
championships.” The Knights didn’t reach
their ultimate goal, but that defeat has
provided the returning players with great
motivation and focus during the off-season.
“The 2010 class of Sophomores has really
worked hard during the off-season. They
really pushed and supported each other in
the weight room, on the field during spring
drills, and most stayed close to home and
made the summer program a top priority.
I’m really looking forward to seeing the
Football - Outlook 2010
results of the hard work they put in carry
over to the game field this season,” said
Coach Thompson.
Offense:
On the offensive side of the ball, the Knights
are counting on some key players from the
2009 season to make great contributions.
The Knights run a multi-pro style offense,
emphasizing multiple formations and
personal packages. which strive to
maintain a balanced run-to-pass attack
with an emphasis on moving the chains
and controlling the clock. “The offense has
more returning players who have starting
experience from last year, so we need their
experience and leadership-especially early
on in the season-to get us off to a good
start,” said CoachThompson. Key players
that Coach Thompson and the offensive
staff will be depending on are; RB-Manny
Barragan, WR-Mark Brooks, RB-Xavier
Robinson, QB-Matt Summers-Johnson,
and OL-Michael Tavega, all who started or
contributed throughout the 2009 season.
Offensive Line:
Leading the charge up front will be Michael
Tevaga (SO-left tackle), Todd Madden, (SOcenter, who played for the Knights in 2008),
Nathan Topete (SO-tackle/guard), Wesley
Wadsworth (RS/FR-guard/tackle), and Kyle
McMahon (SO-center/guard). Newcomers:
Kaulen Pevan (FR-tackle), Gary Wilson
(FR-guard), Josh Eakes, (FR-tackle/guard),
David Fife (FR-center/guard) and Josh
Knoell (FR-tackle)
Tight Ends:
The Tight Ends position will be played by
all freshmen. They are a young but talented
bunch, led by Jacob Frasher, Ryan Phipps,
Mario Trotter, Tucker Schultz, and Roman
Anderson. Look for the offense to use
multiple Tight End packages, and to all these
men getting playing time.
Running Backs:
The Knights are blessed with some great
talent and experience at the running back
position. The return of Manny Barragan and
Xavier Robinson provide the offense with
two top-quality running backs that have
big play potential every time they touch the
ball. Providing depth and change of pace
for Barragan and Robinson is a stable of
promising young running backs: Joseph
Allegretto, Joseph Arthur, Tyler Burton,
Nathan Gilligan, Eric McConico, Brandon
Osuna, Roycen Shepherd, and Ryan
Stephenson.
Receivers:
With the return of Mark Brooks and Kyle
Johnston, the offense will be looking to get
the ball into the hands of these two big play
makers. In addition, the Knights appear to
have quality depth in the receiver position,
and are looking to implement more multiple
receiver formations this season. Rounding
out the rest of the receivers are: Kurtis
Cartwright, Matt Cornish, Sam Diskin, Jared
Holloway, Robert Joseph, Jordin Kinnune,
Ricardo Ramirez, Abdu Reda, Josh Sayre,
Casey Sherwood, and Rashan Williams.
Quarterbacks:
Matthew Summers-Johnson is the lone
carryover from 2009, where he started
several games and had a tremendous offseason. New additions are led by transfers
from Pacific Lutheran A.J. Palazzolo,
Freshmen Hunter Arter, and Matthew
Edwards.
Defense:
The Knights will be running a base 3-4
scheme, and kick into a 4-3 scheme based
upon the offensive situations. The defense
has a solid core of key personnel returning
at all three levels of defense. The defense
will be led by Matt Watson (FS), Chace
Taylor (LB), Marcus Sannadan (DL) and
Matt Anderson (DL).
Defensive Line:
The Knights’ defensive line will be anchored
by Marcus Sannadan at NT, Matt Anderson
playing strong side tackle, and Andrew
Landis playing quick side tackle. Providing
relief will be Jake Campbell and Trevor
Kuyper. Newcomers looking to contribute
are: Edgar Albarado, Adrian Becerra, Derek
Emmen, Tyler Palmer, and William Zekas.
Rounding out the defensive line are Daniel
Friedemann and Zach Mayfield
Linebackers:
The linebacker group is small, but scrappy
and will be depending on Chace Taylor,
Mitch McDevitt, and Adam Acosta
to provide leadership and experience.
Providing depth will be Bradley Woolf,
Chad Almond, Brycen Ganfeild, Kia
Lemrise, and Josh Scarminach.
Defensive Backs:
The secondary may be the overall strength
of the defensive unit. Led by returning
starter Matt Watson ,and combined with
the talented group of men making up the
rest of the unit, the Knights look forward to
having an athletic and physical secondary.
Starting at corner will be Ronny Soulliere
and Dimitios Finney. Making the move
from cornerback to free safety is Matt
Watson, and looking to secure the starting
job at strong safety is Andre Eddings. The
rest of the unit is very talented and should
provide great competition for playing time
throughout the season. Making up the rest
of the unit is: Briscoe Allen, Derek Evans,
Michael Faris, Lucian Harris, Lilton James,
Tanner Kuyper, Carlynn Leggett, Cody
Lowe, Anthony Marques, Dakota Russ, Cole
Sampson ,and Andrew White
Special Teams:
Handling the punting duties is Bradley
Winters, backed up by Cole Sampson,
with Kelly Crowley returning to handle
the kicking duties. Abdu Reda and Manny
Barragan can step in to provide quality
backup for the Knights’ kicking game.

Jason Dell - Head Coach
Jason Dell is no stranger to our area’s local
soccer programs. With over a decade of
coaching experience within the recreation
and high school arena, Jason has helped
develop players’ abilities as well as
championship programs. He was responsible
for the start of the U-Prep School’s soccer
program that consisted of eight teams
and 140 rostered soccer athletes, which
equated to a quarter of the school’s overall
enrollment. He believes the passion of
the game, community involvement, and a
strong work ethic will be the foundation of a
successful Men’s Soccer Program at Shasta
College.
Stuart Hayes –
Assistant Coach
Stuart Hayes has been
involved with the game
of soccer since the early
1970’s, with experience
playing and coaching at
multiple levels. He grew
up playing in Madrid,
Spain before coming
stateside to attend college. He played for
University of California, San Diego, and
continued on after his four years of playing
as a coach for the University, as well as
for North American Soccer League’s San
Diego Sockers. He obtained his USSF A
License in 1979, and is one of a handful of
coaches in Northern California with such a
strong credential. After moving to Redding
in the 1980’s he continued to coach for local
high school and California Youth Soccer
Association teams. Stuart Hayes has the
reputation of building championship teams
with a strong focus on player development.
Richard McKinnon –
Assistant Coach
Richard McKinnon has
been coaching soccer
in the local area for the
past six years with a total
of 12 years coaching in
high school and college
athletics. Being a
former college athlete, he understands the
dedication and drive it takes to succeed at a
higher level. He is a graduate of California
State University, Chico and is involved in
local community programs.
“Being under the emphasis of strength and
conditioning, it is my goal to build a team
based on speed, strength, and endurance.”
Jesse Banda –

Outlook 2010
While we are only entering our second
season of rebuilding the men’s soccer
program, we are confident that we have
players that can compete with the best
teams in the conference, and make a serious
run at the conference championship. This
will be a tough challenge, though, since
we have a roster of mostly freshman. We
know what the men’s soccer team at Shasta
College is capable of, and we look forward
to the opportunity to set a high standard
of excellence within the Golden Valley
Conference.
We would love to see the stands full-as
well as chairs-with fans lining the field for
our home games. College soccer has a big
game atmosphere in general, with the speed
of play and the talented athletes schools are

John Defalco - Assistant Coach
John grew up in the
Bay Area and learned
soccer at migrant
farm worker camps
in the late 1960’s.
He played in high
school and college
earning “All League”
honors in defense.
He has been involved
with soccer either as a player or a coach
eversince, and has had the opportunity to
play soccer in Europe, Mexico, and Asia.
Jody Nelson - Head Coach
Jody has played soccer for numerous years,
including participating on the first girls’
soccer team in Fresno when she was in
third grade. With most of the same girls,
her club team later took second place twice
in the state championships. Many of these
girls also played with Jody on the first girls’
team at Hoover High School, which was
undefeated during her three years there.
In 1981, Jody graduated from high school
and attended California State University,
Fresno, where she participated in intramural,
coed soccer. After graduating from
California State University, Fresno, in 1986,
Jody taught in Japan, traveled, and married.
She is married to Randy Nelson, a Redding
attorney and they have three children, Kiely
(19), Mitchell (17), and Christopher (16).
After moving to Redding in 1995, Jody
reentered the soccer world. She joined the
Redding Adult Soccer League, and was a
board member for about five years. During
that time, she also coached her daughter’s
soccer team and continued with many of the
same girls for about six years, with the last
three at the Division III level.
Jody hopes to use her contacts in the adult
and youth soccer leagues to encourage
community involvement in the Shasta
College team. Looking forward to her
second season at Shasta College, she wants
to continue developing a program in which
students will want to participate. She hopes
the students learn that if they work hard,
they will be part of a competitive team, and
gain lasting friendships and memories.
John and his wife, Cindi, moved to the
north state in 1989, where he has been
involved with various youth organizations
as a volunteer mentor. In addition, he has
continued to coach and play soccer. He still
plays in two to four games per week and
plays in pick-up games whenever he can.
He and his wife, Cindi, who supports
his “madness”, just celebrated their 31st
wedding anniversary this year.

Women’s Soccer Outlook 2010
Shasta College’s relatively young soccer
team will be led by the only three returning
players. Hanna Emmen is the Sophomore
goalie who shows no fear out on the pitch.
Combined with Roni Stouffer controlling
the middle, and Erin Graham adding
support from the outside, the three will
captain the 2010 team. Newcomers Cally
Bailey, Tara Stouffer, and Audrey Kramm
have shown great defensive abilities, and
already work together very well on the back
line. In addition, they will be helped by
the tenacity of Krista Gibson, Niki Hughes,
Kasarah Coyle, and MacKenzie Burch.

These versatile players will also play thethe
midfield and forward positions, when
needed. Expected to work the middle and
front-line with speed, skill and endurance
are Alette Romac, Teresa Craig, Erica
Hunting, and Amber Fiscus. These four
work very well together. They see the field,
and generously combine for quick defensive
action and offensive threats. Although a
small squad that will have to work hard for
its victories, these 14 women have already
shown that they have the team spirit and
athletic talent that it takes to win.

This Shasta College volleyball team begins
its season in a rebuilding phase, returning
just one starter from the previous season,
and only two sophomores. Kaitlyn Goff
(Kelseyville High School) is expected
to repeat as a starting outside hitter for
the Knights, and Megan Panza (Redding
Christian High School) is seeing time as
a right side hitter. Coming off of redshirt
seasons are Sarah Loogman (Shasta
College/Etna High School) and Kiely
Nelson (Southern Oregon University/Shasta
High School). Sarah, an outside hitter, is
leading the team in kills so far this season,
and Kiely, in addition to hitting, has been
learning the role of setter. Since the team
has no experienced setters, several players
have been trying their hand at this key
position. Megan Bowen (West Valley High
17
School), Jessekah McCorkle (Hamilton
City High School), and Josefina Smith
(Foothill High School) are all learning
to set. These three, along with Presley
Boughn (Central Valley High School) are
also defensive specialists. Rounding out the
team as middle and utility hitters are Staci
Bettencourt (Willows High School), Kelsey
Lohse (Orland High School), Julie Annis
(Shasta High School), Kristi Cearly (Fall
River High School), and Lexie Davidson
(Del Norte High School). These five hitters
will bring lots of offensive attack options to
the front row. Overall, the team is athletic
and quick, and we expect to be an exciting
team to watch.

Max Burch - Head Coach
Head Coach Max is beginning his tenth
season as wrestling coach for the Knights.
He attended Oklahoma State University for 3
1/ years and graduated from California State
2
University, Fresno in 1962. After receiving his
Bachelor of Arts degree, he began teaching
at Madera Union High School where he also
began his coaching career as an assistant
wrestling coach. In 1964, Max and his wife
Connie, with their two sons, Bryan and Mike,
moved to Redding, where Max accepted a
teaching position at Shasta High School.
In 1965, he was instrumental in initiating
the first wrestling program at Shasta High
where he served as Head Coach through
the 1983 season. During those 18 years, his
teams won five Northern Section CIF team
championships. In 1981, Shasta High placed
fifth in the State as a team, the highest place
finish by any Northern Section team to date.
During his high school tenure, he coached
two State champions, one runner-up, and
two third place finishers. He coached seven
wrestlers during his tenure at Shasta High
went on to wrestle at Division 1 schools. In
2001, Shasta College reinstated its wrestling
program, and Coach Burch was picked to
guide the Knights. Since that time, the
Knights’ wrestling team has produced three
State champions, 12 All Americans, and 27
California State CC place finishers. One of
the greatest wrestling moments for Coach
Burch was the honor of presenting The
National Wrestling Hall of Fame inductee,
Greg Gibson, with his plaque at the National
Wrestling Hall of Fame Banquet. .

Greg Gibson
Assistant Coach
Greg Gibson is
beginning his second
season as assistant
wrestling coach for
the Knights. He
began his competitive
career in 1969 at
Shasta High School
under the guidance
of Coach Burch ,
finishing in third place at the California State
CIF Championships. After graduation, he
continued his wrestling and football careers at
Shasta College, where he placed third at the
California Community College State Wrestling
Championships. Greg was also an outstanding
defensive lineman for Coach Leon Donohue
and the Shasta College Knights football team.
Upon finishing his second year at Shasta
College, Greg transferred to the University of
Oregon on a full athletic scholarship. While
wrestling at the University of Oregon, he
became a Pac 10 champion, and two-time
NCAA Division 1 silver medalist. Greg was
also an outstanding defensive lineman for
the University of Oregon football team. For
his athletic accomplishments, he was named
Outstanding Athlete at the University of
19
Oregon. After graduation, Greg joined the
United States Marine Corps where he set
many national and world records in Freestyle
Greco-Roman, and Sombo Wrestling.
Greg won the Silver Medal in Wrestling at
the 1984 Olympics held in Los Angeles.
His accomplishments at the World
Championships in all three international styles
of wrestling are: four-time World Champion,
seven-time Silver Medalist, and three-time
Bronze Medalist. In addition, he is five-time
National Free-Style Champion, three-time
National Greco-Roman Champion, and fourtime National Sombo Champion. Gibson
served as wrestling coach of the national
Marine Corps team from 1985 through 2003.
In his career with the Marines, Greg
distinguished himself in service to the
nation, including a tour of duty during the
first Gulf War. He retired from the Marine
Corps in 2003. As a wrestler of outstanding
achievements, and an example of service
to his country, Greg Gibson was honored
as a Distinguished Member of the National
Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2007.
We are very fortunate to have Greg as a
member of our coaching staff.

Wrestling
Outlook 2010
Most of the starters from the 2009 Shasta
College wrestling team have been lost
through graduation.
We have two returning Sophomores in
Jared Minoletti and Wes Swofford. The
remaining team members are made up of 18
Freshman and three redshirt Sophomores.
One of the redshirts, Tina Linhsamout,
is Shasta’s first lady wrestler. Tina has
wrestled two years for West Valley College,
and is using a redhsirt year at Shasta
College to train. She then plans to move on
to Colorado Springs in January to train for
the Women’s Olympics.
Five of the Freshman are former California
State high school qualifiers that show much
promise. They are Terry Matthews-Shasta
High, Craig Simons-Orland High, Colt
Little-Anderson High, Lance GordonDurham High, and Marcus Buchanan-Mt.
Shasta High. Two other wrestlers out of
North Monterey County High School,
Ruben Gonzalez and Federico Rosiles,
are also showing much promise, as is LP
Eickhoff from Shasta High.
This team has talent, and its success
depends on how quickly the wrestlers
adjust to wrestling at a higher intensity of
competition at the college level.
