Austin Gerry’s base hit in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted the Butte Muckers to
their ‐rst win of the season on Sunday, a 9-8 victory over the Bozeman Spikes at Copper
Mountain.
The win came in the ‐rst game of a doubleheader. Bozeman won the second game by a
14-3 score in a contest that was trimmed to ‐ve innings.
Gerry’s game-winning hit in the opener was only ‐tting. He is one of the players on the
Muckers with substantial experience at this level, and will be looked upon to help lead
the team this season.
“Austin Gerry, he might play with the Miners a little bit,” Muckers head coach Nick Dodge
said. “He’s kind of stepped up and he’s been a leader for some of the younger kids that
we have.”
Though the Muckers have o†cially dropped ‐ve of their ‐rst six games, Dodge is happy
with the way things are progressing. The ‐rst game of Sunday’s twin-bill was a prime
example.
Bozeman was leading through most of that game but the Muckers hung tough until it
was their turn to strike.
The win came as a learning experience for the players – and came in handy for Dodge
and his coaching sta‐.
“I’m still learning too,” he said. “Being a younger group of guys, we’re just getting better
every week. When we’re playing against some of those teams with older kids, it’s
obviously tough.”
One of those tougher experiences came last weekend against Livingston. The Muckers
lost two games.
“We competed in that ‐rst game,” Dodge added. “I was really proud of them.”

Gerry isn’t alone in the leadership department. Bryson Henningsen, who started
Sunday’s second game after being the Muckers’ catcher in the opener, has also shown
the ability to lead by example.
Dodge said he expects three things out of his players this season. Not one item on his list
mentions wins or losses.
“I want them to learn, get better and have fun,” he said. “As soon as the sport is not fun
anymore, it’s tough.”
The Muckers have been plagued by mental errors during the early part of their season
and Dodge hopes to see those issues get ironed out as time goes on. Coaching that
aspect of a players’ game could come with its own challenges, so Dodge hopes that a
combination of coaching and repetition will help in that area. That, and staying positive.
“That’s a tough thing to coach,” he said of the mental mistakes. “I think getting repetition
de‐nitely has a lot to do with it.
“I like to be positive. There are times when you need to get on kids and make sure they
know what to do. I like to be really positive and stay positive and hope that they feed o‐
of that positive energy.”
Miners drop 2
A pair of big innings were enough to derail the Butte Miners’ hopes for a pair of wins in
Great Falls on Sunday.
The Chargers ended up sweeping the doubleheader, beating the Miners, 6-4, in the
opener and 5-3 in the nightcap.
Great Falls used a ‐ve-run third inning to secure the win in the ‐rst game, and scored
four runs in the sixth inning to come from behind in Game 2.
The ‐rst game saw the Chargers jump out to a 5-0 lead after three innings but the
Miners responded to make it a close game.

Trey Berger led o‐ the fourth inning with a single and worked his way into scoring
position before scoring the Miners’ ‐rst run on a grounder by Justin Summers.
The Miners added a run in the ‐fth thank to an RBI-single by Quin Summers, and their
way even close with a pair of runs in the sixth. Zach Hart delivered the big hit with a oneout single that scored Trey Berger and Kash Kelly. Hart worked his way to third base with
two outs but was stranded there.
The Chargers added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth before turning the ball
over to Tyler Strickland for the save.
The nightcap saw Butte take a 2-0 lead in the third inning, only to have Great Falls score
a run in the home half of the inning.
Trey Hoagland used a two-base error to get on in the ‐fth inning and gave the Miners a
3-1 lead on a hit by Ax Henningsen.
A leado‐ double by Great Falls’ Strickland in the sixth inning started the Chargers’ goahead rally. Chase Linn, Wyatt Bleskin and Dawson Reiman and A.J. Folds picked up RBIs
in the inning.
Ryan Moodry walked to start the last-gasp seventh inning for Butte but was left at ‐rst
base when the game’s ‐nal out was made.
