2013 report to the community
M IS S ION S TAT EM E NT North Carolina’s State orchestra, an orchestra achieving the highest level of artistic quality and performance standards, and embracing our dual legacies of statewide service and music education. l et te r f r om T HE CHAI R Dear Friends, As I think back on the time since our last Report to the Community, I feel an enormous sense of pride in the way your North Carolina Symphony is moving forward. We are fully engaged in the work of our strategic plan, “Strategy 2017.” Implementation of our initiatives within the areas of Excellence, Community, and Sustainability in 2013 and going forward into 2014 is making a difference in how we do things. The North Carolina Symphony is well-named, for we belong to the citizens of North Carolina, from the mountains to the coast. Last year, in addition to series concerts in Raleigh, Chapel Hill, Cary, Fayetteville, New Bern, Wilmington, and Southern Pines, we brought free outdoor concerts to eight communities through our “Concerts in Your Community” program, as well as statewide Holiday Pops programs, and a tour of our Western counties — in total reaching 91 counties of the state with our performances. With one of the most extensive education programs of any U.S. orchestra, the North Carolina Symphony touched the lives of more than 50,000 schoolchildren last year. That is 50,000 more future adults that now share a common experience with so many other North Carolinians! When I was an elementary student in Craven County, my first orchestra experience was with the North Carolina Symphony. I have loved this orchestra my whole life, which made it a particular honor to be selected as Board Chair in September 2013. I want to take this opportunity to thank my predecessor, Catharine Arrowood, who also first heard the Symphony as an elementary school student, setting the course for her lifelong love of orchestral music. I look forward to continuing her great example of teamwork and her inspiring sense of mission. Working together, all of the North Carolina Symphony family – Music Director Grant Llewellyn, our superb musicians, our trustees, and staff led by CEO Sandi Macdonald – will accomplish great things in the years to come. Sincerely, JEFF CORBETT | Chair, North Carolina Symphony Society hig hlig hts fr om 2 O1 3 From concerts in the beautiful Meymandi Concert Hall, to wonderful venues throughout the state, school auditoriums, and outdoor venues, the musicians of the Symphony elevated each stage they performed on by bringing great music to audiences young and old alike. and Orchestra, Op. 68, with masterful cellist Zuill Bailey, along with a wonderful fundraising event held on the Meymandi stage called Bach, Bailey, and Bacchus. The legendary cellist Yo-Yo Ma performed a sold-out special concert that delighted the audience and musicians alike. Music Director Grant Llewellyn and the orchestra began and ended the season with 100th anniversary celebrations. In the season’s opening concerts, we marked the centenary of Ravel’s passionate Daphnis et Chloe and capped the season with the 100th anniversary of Stravinsky’s ground-breaking ballet, The Rite of Spring. Other highlights included some of the most inspiring and bestloved works of the orchestral canon, including Handel’s Messiah; Mozart’s Symphonies No. 25 and No. 35, “Haffner;” Brahms’ Requiem and Symphony No. 2; Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade; Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 and Elgar’s Enigma Variations. Also in the 2013 season, stellar guest artists such as Gabriela Montero, Peter Serkin, Anthony Dean Griffey, Lara St. John, Lise de la Salle, and Ingrid Fliter appeared with the Symphony. The season also included a recording project of Britten’s Symphony for Cello The Symphony continued to deepen its connection to its audience. Through thematic Explorations programming, the Symphony worked to increase awareness of how music, art and literature can provide a tool for examining culture more deeply. The summer season at Cary’s Koka Booth Amphitheatre featured a wonderful mix of classical music and Pops performances, programmed by Resident Conductor and Summerfest Artistic Director William Henry Curry. Highlights included Brahms Symphony No. 2 in D Major, the Beatles tribute “Classical Mystery Tour,” Holst’s The Planets: An HD Odyssey, and the Symphony’s annual Independence Day concert. “Even as it continuously seeks to reimagine and redefine itself in response to changing times — drawing on the new wealth, talent and ambition that have remade Raleigh and the state — the Symphony is guided by its long and distinguished history. It is that rare institution that is both a landmark of the past and a signpost to the future.” J. Last year, more than 50,000 schoolchildren in North Carolina were prepared by their teachers to experience live orchestral music. Students listened to examples of great composers, studied the fundamentals of music, and learned about the instruments that make up a symphony orchestra. That very important work with those committed teachers in the classroom then culminated with an education concert, either at one of their local schools, or during a field trip to Meymandi Concert Hall. Countless North Carolinians – many in their 60s and 70s – have a “North Carolina Symphony Story” from that first experience hearing the orchestra. Since Symphony education programs were established in the 1940s, more than 5 million schoolchildren have been introduced to orchestral music by superb musicians of the North Carolina Symphony. Until 2013, Symphony education programs were for elementary aged students and older. “North Carolina Symphony Music Discovery” is the first Symphony program designed for preschool children. Supported by a grant from PNC as part of its Grow Up Great initiative to improve early childhood education, each hour-long program welcomes preschoolers and their families to listen to a story read by North Carolina Symphony musicians, hear a little music, and experience the Symphony’s Instrument Zoo. During the month of August 2013, musicians visited six Wake County public libraries. Since its inception, and by the end of 2014, the Symphony will also have hosted “Music Discovery” programs in Fayetteville, New Bern, Wilmington and Southern Pines. In the time since, the North Carolina Symphony has become the largest performing arts organization in the state and is proud to continue to play a role in the cultural life and creative economies of our communities across North Carolina. And, as part of that statewide service in 2013, the North Carolina Symphony added to its 70 plus year legacy of music education, giving elementary students what is often their first experience with the power of live orchestral music. In “Strategy 2017” we set a course to be artistically inspirational, creative and vibrant; educationally essential and relevant; financially strong and sound; and organizationally excellent and communityminded. Our vision for the future is rooted in our commitment to being good stewards of the support entrusted to us by you, our ticket buyers, donors, and legislators. Because of you, we met the State Challenge Grant for the fourth year in a row garnering $8 million in private support to receive the $1.5 million grant from the state. This effort was bolstered by a record breaking year in ticket sales revenue and a double digit increase in contributions. We also launched a Major Gift Program to ensure that the North Carolina Symphony has the working capital, operating reserves, and research and development funding to meet strategic aspirations and sustainability goals that support our mission and scope of artistic activity. We accomplish our work in and for communities all across the state thanks to the superb talents of our musicians, who, above all, are at the core of everything we do. From the 175 full orchestra concerts to the 40+ chamber music, ensemble, and outreach programs, these amazing players exemplify dedication and passion for their work. Led by Music Director Grant Llewellyn, the North Carolina Symphony continues to pursue its commitment to providing visionary performances and touching the lives of North Carolina citizens young and old. f ul f il l ing o u r pr om i se to F Y 2 O1 3 B U D GET - $ 1 3 .2 M I LLI ON 3% N OR TH CA R O L IN A The North Carolina Symphony is the state’s largest performing arts organization, providing essential cultural value that enhances economic development in communities both large and small. 27% 34% 36% Your continued support counts, and is a wise investment.
