Toe Touch Drills:
The most important thing in having your team
develop stronger toe touches is to have your team
practice jumping every day. By doing’ 10-15 jumps
in a daily basis one “teaches the muscles.”
Emphasize to your team members that they are to
start off by stretching out. A good strong stretching
and warm-up before actually throwing any jumps
will help a cheerleader avoid pulling or straining muscles.
The coach needs to set up a jump conditioning program. This conditioning
program should be done every other day.
The basic exercise drill is leg lifts. Each
of your cheerleaders must do 3 sets of
leg lifts:. They are to sit in a straddle on
the floor, hands are behind them for support
(hands should be on the floor, under or near their
tail), slightly leaning back and lift both legs (about
a foot off the floor), keeping their legs STRAIGHT,
WITHOUT their legs touching the floor lift them,
count to 10, then release them for a breather and
repeat. Do a total of 3 sets. Leg lifts are hard but it
will strengthen their and improve the height of their
jumps!
After leg lifts have each team member do side
high kicks: arms in a T motion, with right leg kick 5
times, breather for for 5 seconds, switch to left leg
5 times.
Ready to begin: Throw their toe touch, count 5-6-78, throw another, then repeat. (I make my squad do
10)
When they are throwing your toe touch:
Make sure they have a good prep (feet and legs together, bending knees, keeping your back straight).
Have them to concentrate on using the muscles in
their legs when prepping, after all that is how theyget off the ground in the first place.
4
The Sideline
Stress to the team that when they are in the air they are
not to reach for their legs. Stress that they must keep
their arms in a t-motion and try to bring their legs begind
their arms. It is also important for them to keep their legs
straight. Bent knees make a toe touch look sloppy.
Make sure to have the team members to work on pointing
the toes.
Here are a few other conditioning exercises to
build muscle strength in the abs and legs:
1. Resistance exercises. There are three resistance exercises. All three are partner exercises.
In each, one partner lies on their back with legs
straight up, perpendicular to the floor. For the
first , the standing partner pushes the legs of her
partner to the left, to the back, to the right. The latter
is to resist the push. (Do 3 sets of 10.) The second has
the standing partner to place her arms at the ankles of her
partner on the inside. Arms/legs are to statrt about a foot
apart. The partner who is laying down is to push against
the arms of the standing - the partner doing arms tries to
push the legs apart while the partner doing the legs tries to
push the arms together. (Do for 30 seconds, 3 sets). The
third exercise has the standing partner place her arms to
the outside of the legs. This exercise follows the same
concept as the second exercise except the leg person is
trying to push the arms apart, and the arm person is trying
to push the legs together. (30 seconds, 3 sets.
2. Keeping backs straight: Have all team members lie flat
on the floor. Do the counts for a jump as you would usually
do. The team must learn
to snap their legs to their
arm without bending to
touch their toes. (Do 1
set of 10.)
Thank you to about.com
for the picture and the
drill.

One very important move that any
c oac h will try to n a il d o wn first
with a group of cheerleaders is the
handstand. If you cannot execute
a flawless handstand, then you are
going to have more than a couple
of problems with some of the other
necessary tumbling moves in any
cheerleading routine. After all, a
short list of some of the tumbling
moves that can be ruined by a
poor handstand include front and
back hand springs, round-offs,
cartwheels and ariel cartwheels,
and all types of walk-overs. So, to
say the least, if you want a great
routine that is filled with wonderful

by dedicated coaches and supportive administrators. MCCA recognizes these contributions
annually with four awards: the Community
Service Award, the Sportsmanship Award.,
the Administrator of the Year Award, and the
Coach’s Service Award.
If you need more information regarding one of
the awards contact Linda Whitford at:
