It's not.” Dr. Seuss, The Lorax 1 Good evening and welcome, On behalf of the Trustees and Directors of The Aurora Group, as well as the community organisations that we assist, I would like to thank you for joining us tonight at Aurora’s 14th Annual Ball, ‘Yesterday Once More’. Tonight I invite you to take an opulent journey with me back to the days of our colourful past, exploring the history of this iconic venue, the Sydney Town Hall when it played host to an eclectic crowd at bohemian artists balls. We are in good hands with television personality and human rights activist Gretel Killeen as our host. There is an outstanding line up of entertainment to take us through till the early hours including Sydney Show Queen Trevor Ashley, Aurora favourite Brendan Maclean fresh from his role as Klipspringer in The Great Gatsby, cabaret singer and drag artist Joey Arias, all the way from New York City, DJ Matt Vaughan as well as The Carpenters from Kempsey who I expect will have us all singing along. I am thrilled to be able to welcome award winning comedic actress Magda Szubanski as our keynote speaker for this evening and I’m sure that I can speak for us all when I say I’m greatly looking forward the hearing her address as one our community’s much respected figures. While the theme of the Ball is a reflection on the past, The Aurora Group is well and truly looking to the future. This year has seen Aurora introduce the offer of youth concession ticket to the Ball so that younger members of our community can have an opportunity to experience and support Aurora through attending this event. We welcome them to the Aurora family. Aurora was founded in 1999 with the aim to raise funds for a number of vital services for the gay, lesbian and transgender community and some 14 years later, there are still so many important causes which need our help. This is my first year as Chair and I am continually amazed by the love and support for Aurora in our GLBTQ community, as well as the wider community. Numerous sponsors, donors, volunteers and partners have contributed selflessly to make this Ball happen. I thank each and every one of them for their generosity. Special thanks to our Event Partners Bayleaf Catering, Oak Barrel, City of Sydney and Radisson Blu Hotel Sydney and Media Partners SameSame, Star Observer and SX. I am most grateful to the Aurora Board Directors and Trustees for their hard work and guidance. The Board is made up entirely of volunteers who have worked tirelessly to bring this event together, in particular our Events Director Wayne Cox. My heartfelt thanks and congratulations to you all, it’s such a pleasure to work with all of you and I am so proud of our achievements so far. So for now sit back, enjoy the glittering evening, and I will see you on the dance floor! Adam Niewand Chairperson, The Aurora Group 2 All that glitters will be gold tonight at Sydney Town Hall for Aurora’s 14th Annual Ball! This evening’s theme, ‘Yesterday Once More’, has been inspired by fundraiser events of the past and we are very excited to offer you all an opulent and lavish experience, with an art deco atmosphere and a stellar line-up of guests. Aurora's events have always been staged with a spirit of fun and celebration. The Annual Ball is held in late June to mark the anniversary of International Stonewall Day. This evening we will toast to this date, as well as the 35th Anniversary of Mardi Gras. In homage to the community’s history and origins, tonight is an opportunity to celebrate Aurora’s history and future directions. Tonight’s theme has been inspired by the history of this iconic venue, inviting guests back to a time when the Sydney Town Hall played host to bohemian artists’ balls of the new modern and permissive ’Jazz’ age. The Centennial Hall was richly decorated with streamers, flowers and artworks, much like tonight. Guests would attend wearing elaborately themed fancy dress. Frequented by all classes, the eclectic crowd included artists, writers, models and muses. The first post-war Artists’ Ball was in 1922 to raise money for soldiers injured in the war. They were considered highly controversial due to the unseemly shenanigans and gay abandon of its guests, a story all too familiar to the GLBT community that Aurora supports! As part of tonight’s program, we are thrilled to have international guest star Joey Arias from New York, the Carpenters all the way from Kempsey and Brendan MacLean, fresh from playing Ewing Klipspringer in the film The Great Gatsby. Trevor Ashley is back to sprook the crowd for the live auction as well as belt out a tune with Margi De Ferranti – not to mention a very special surprise performance! Let’s get to the gay abandon! Wayne Cox Events Director IN MEMORY OF TONY “MARY” COOPER 22 JULY 1959 - 27 APRIL 2013 Tonight's dinner is dedicated to the memory of Tony Cooper. Aurora raises money through fundraising events, supporter donations and Aurora’s regular giving program. Our major event, the Aurora Dinner was first held in 2000. It is the fundraising organisation people choose when they want their money to be effective across the whole community, not just one specific issue. Aurora’s two major beneficiaries are The Twenty10 Association and the Gay and Lesbian Counselling Service of NSW. Aurora has funded the two organisations every year since 2000. We also support a number of other organisations through our small grants program. Small grant recipients in the last round of funding included ACON working with Maropa Productions, The Gender Centre, The Benevolent Society, Regional Youth Support Service - GenQ, The Junction Neighbourhood Centre, Far West Community Legal Centre – Broken Hill, Cancer Council and Wayside Chapel. Aurora is committed to keeping vital services and projects funded. We are proud that our funds give these organisations the security and stability to respond to emerging needs. You can join us in this work by participating in our Giving Program. Giving Program forms are available tonight, or you can register via our website. As a donor you nominate a sum that is deducted automatically from your credit card every month. Or you can simply make a one-off donation. All funds raised through the Giving Program are administered by a trust and passed on to Aurora’s beneficiaries. Aurora’s directors and trustees are professionals whose contributions are made on a volunteer basis. As such, Aurora’s overheads remain low, maximizing the funds available for distribution. At the time I was an active member of many G&L community organisations and I saw that non HIV/AIDS organisations were struggling for money as all fund raising within the community at that time was directed to HIV/AIDS organisations. Additionally, there was little recognition of the Anniversary of Stonewall Day, 28 June. This is an incredibly important date to remember on the G&L Calendar and I believed that it should be recognised. Accordingly we set about establishing both a Company, titled The Aurora Group – A Ruby Foundation Limited, and a charitable trust with tax deductable status, of the same name. The first official meeting of the Company was on 7 October 1999. There were nine Directors of which those same Directors were the Founding Trustees of the Trust. It was agreed that a cornerstone of the fundraising activities would be a gala formal dinner of which the first dinner was held on 24 June 2000. A lot has happened in the intervening years.” Bruce Pollack Aurora Chairperson 2000-2004 Founding Member & Trustee “Aurora's fundraising activities facilitate the work of organisations that provide a much needed safety net for GLBT people who feel sexually different and experience discrimination, bullying and expulsion from families, friends and institutions because of that difference. These organisations enable the development and nurturing of their sexual difference among friends who accept and acknowledge that difference.” Jane Marsden Aurora Chairperson 2005-2007 Founding Member & Trustee “Privileged is how I feel about my time chairing Aurora. It is an awesome responsibility to lead a talented and passionate team of people who are all leaders in their fields, all brilliant at making things happen, and all embodying the true spirit of community. Of course there were long nights and the odd drama, but when we heard the real-life stories of people's lives changed by the organisations we support and we saw the smiles on people's faces enjoying our events, then we knew it was worth the sweat! Thank you to the team - I'm grateful for every one of you being in my life ... And thank you to the Aurora supporters - you do more for the community than you realise so please keep giving.” Alex Sosnov Aurora Chairperson 2007-2009 “There is a cosmic moment at the end of an Aurora Dinner when a small group of wonderful volunteers clear away the settling glitter, as hardworking waitstaff pass us in tight foyers, when news of fundraising efforts start to filter through and the delirious exhaustion turns to excitement for what now can happen. While this is an excellent pitch to recruit more bump out volunteers, it is my fond memory of working on something special with my friends.” David Moutou Aurora Chairperson 2010-2011 “There are so many worthy projects and causes in our community, not all of which are ‘fashionable’ or ‘visible’. The beauty of Aurora is that it provides funds to a wide spectrum of projects across New South Wales. Aurora provides the connection between those who want to give and the groups who make it happen. It’s great being part of something that makes a difference!” Marcus Bourget Aurora Chairperson 2012-2013 25 32 Hundred Lighting Chris Muir Jane Parker ACON City of Sydney Jeff McBride Adam Glover CLOUD 9 DESIGN Jeremy Brennan Adam Niewand COCOM Communications Jeremy Kinross Adam Powell Constant Reader Joey Arias Adrian Culey Corporate Culture Jordan Bradley Agensse Australia Damian Furlong Joy Marshall Alex Greenwich MP Daniel Cormack Judith Fletcher Alex Sosnov Darren Mapes Julianne Sanders Alison King David Bayly Justin Bull Alison Wright David Moutou Kantine Amber Silk David Pallot Kath Davis Amy Coopes David Wilkins Katie Hoskins Ananas Bar and Brasserie Dawn Hough Kepos Street Kitchen Ann-Marie Calilhanna Deborah Davies Kerrie Stanley Millinery Anthony Hillis DJ Matt Vaughan Kerry Fluhr Anthony McGovern Earl Dax Kevin Golding Antony Read Efrem O'Brien Khanly Clark Australian Labor Party Garrett Bithell Laurence Stark Bayleaf Catering Gay4Play Liam Ward Belvoir Theatre George Braybon Bev Kennedy Gerald Kohn Liberal Members of NSW Parliament Brad Timms Goldman Sachs Brandon Bear Gretel Killeen Brendan Maclean Hair by Sa Bruce Pollack Hamid Mousa Cameron Power Helen Fleming Captain Cook Cruises Howard Edelman Carlos Navarro Iain Reed Carmelo Pizzino IBM Carolyn McKay Jane Marsden 26 Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP Louise Marsden Maeve Marsden Magda Szubanski MakMak Malcolm Poole Marcus Bourget Margee Brown Margi De Ferranti Same Same Mark Coppleson Saskia Smith Matt Akersten Scalawag Productions Matt Robson SGLBA Matthew Santon-Rutherford Shane Haydock Meg Ebelt Simon Clarke Meredith Turnbull SkinDNA Clinics Michael Huxley Star Observer Michael Vaughan Stuart Doherty Mondial SX Mr Gay Oz Sydney Community Foundation Nathan Hudson Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Nathan Richmond Nick Bond Nicola Gleeson Coopes The Chase Gallery, Double Bay Nikki Maloney Thomas McAulliffe NSW Police Force Tim Daly Oak Barrel Tim Duggan Paul Walker Timothy Pilgrim Penny Sharpe MLC Tony Cooper Peter Kirby Tony Wall Pride in Diversity Trevor Ashley Radisson Blu Hotel Sydney Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment Rainbow Ceremonies Twenty 10 Randwick City Council Velluto Champagne and Wine Bar Reg Domingo Richard Brown Wayne Cox Rob Davis Wayne Parcell Rob McGrory Zenith Wellbeing Robyn Laverack Zoe Davis Rohan Forkner 27 Liberal Members NSW Parliament 28 29 SUPPORT
