Smyrna
Pergamon
Morning flight to Izmir. Our first stop is the ruins of Smyrna which was the second city to
receive a letter from the apostle John. Acts 19:10 suggests that the church there was
founded during Paul’s third missionary journey. Due to the fact that the port city of
Izmir houses the third largest population in Turkey today, the site of ancient Smyrna has
excavations of the Agora, theater and sections of the Roman aqueduct. Next, the
hauntingly beautiful Pergamon perched atop a windswept mountain along the Turkish
coastline and gazing proudly over the Aegean Sea. Among the impressive structures of
this city, dating from 399 B.C., we will see the Altar of Zeus, Temple of Dionysus and
the site of once stood the 200,000 volume library which was surpassed only by that
found in Alexandria. The Asclepieum of Pergamon was a famous health center for
treatments including blood transfusions, music therapy and meditation.
Overnight: Labella Hotel, Pergamum || Meals: Breakfast & Dinner
DAY 8
Wednesday, November 15
Thyatira
Sardis
Philadelphia
Laodicea
This morning we visit Thyatira to see the ancient remains of the city where Christianity
spread quickly. Then it is on to Sardis whose history dates back to 12th century B.C.
Sardis felt the influence of Christianity very early and was included in the Seven
Churches of the Apocalypse. Highlights will be a Synagogue, Gymnasium, Byzantine
Church and the Temple of Artemis. Sardis was noted as a textile center, producing wool
to make the himation, the most common outer garment for men and women in the
Greco-Roman world. Our next stop is Philadelphia which was an important Christian
center during Byzantine times. We will see the Basilica and several interesting mosques.
Philadelphia was rocked by earthquakes during its time, we will see the remaining
pillars of the city still standing and marvel at the sheer size. Laodicea will be our final
stop today where we will find a Theatre, a Stadium, Water Tower and an Odeon. This
city is supposed to have been named by Antiochus II in honor of his wife, Laodicea. The
church in Laodicea (3:14) was closely related to its sister church in Colossae and

beauty will leave you breathless. We then drive to Selcuk to visit the famous ancient city
of Ephesus, one of the world’s finest archaeological sites. Ephesus was known for
magical practices and false prophets. The church encountered great opposition
because of the Temple of Artemis as well as from the fourteen or more other deities
that were worshipped here, however the church was given an incredible promise if they
would overcome, and this we will learn on site. Highlights include the Library of Celcius,
the Temple of Hadrian, the Fountain of Trajan and the Theatre. The day will conclude
