Eurotainer Expands in Mexico - Port of Houston Magazine Archives
Eurotainer Expands in Mexico In response to the need of shippers for easier access to tank containers in Mexico, Eurotainer USA Inc. is establishing equipment inventories and related services at three locations in that country. The locations are Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, a leading industrial city in northeastern Mexico; Irapuato, Guanajuato, a rail and highway junction northwest of Mexico City; and Veracruz, Veracruz, Mexico’s most important Gulf port. Both IM 1 O1 and 102 containers will be available at these locations, as well as units for food products. Other Services With this effort, Eurotainer becomes the first provider of logistics services for tank containers to have inventory in Mexico, says Russell Jones, president, Eurotainer USA. Along with the inventory come services such as repairs, painting and inspections. Previously, all equipment for use in Mexico was handled from ...... Eurotainer’s Houston facility. "Wehave leasing activity in Mexico," says Jones. "So this expansion is not only aimed at increasing sales, it’s also our next stage for improving our leasing activities." The company will continue to employ Cittec-Mexico S.A., its agent in Mexico since 1991. Cittec provides complete support in Mexico for companies engaged in import and export activities. Largest Fleet Eurotainer operates the largest fleet of tank containers in the world. Tank containers offer shippers the flexibility, speed and economy of transport by rail, highway or water without costly and time-consuming transfers between modes. Eurotainer USAInc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Eurotainer S.A. Both are members of the Brambles Worldwide Group, providing complete tank container logistics services for North American shippers moving products to or from any location in the world. Heavy-Lifts .°..°=o°°ooo=toa.oo J,ololoo,e,oo,o°o°°,. (Continued from Page 5) facility for movingheavy-lift cargo must take into account numerous factors -- truck and rail access, availability of cranes and other equipment, the port’s proximity to where the cargo originates or is destined, availability of storage area, steamship connections and whether a particular wharf is large and durable enough to accommodate the cargo. Each of these ingredients is as important as the next to the overall success of the job, and no two jobs are alike. "When you think about it, the planning- all the detail workthat goes into a heavy lift is incredible," says Horan. "Houston is an old hand at this kind of job; we excel at it. Still, no matter how long you’ve workedin this business, a heavy-lift is an impressive thing to watch." [] NOT IGES. THE AT CERES. "The drug program is important -- it’s good for everyone. Nobody wants to work with an addict. I’ve read 80 percent of American industry has drug testing. It should be 100 percent. We’re proud that our incident rate is lower, but accident costs keep going up, so we want to keep working harder to avoid accidents and keep this region competitive." Other Benefits James Wells, president of Fairway Terminals, said "We feel the WGMA safety program has been very helpful in reducing lost-time incidents. The staff is very professional, and they work with a cooperative spirit. Probably the best thing is the combination of their physical presence on the docks, with the excellent research and program development behind the scenes." Captain John Scardasis, vice president, West Gulf division, Lykes Bros Steamship Co., commented, "We have observed improvements -- not only in safety, but with communication and increased productivity. The improvements in safety and work habits also enhance the port’s ability to attract cargo because we’re seen by the shipping community as a productive and safe work place. It’s a form of leadership that can enhance the region’s overall place in the industry." The WGMA safety program is good news for the Port of Houston and its nine West Gulf sister ports -- and one more example of this region’s maritime leadership. The filing followed a year of "intense discussions, negotiations and, above all, unselfish cooperation" among IADAconferences and member lines, says IADAChairmanJohn Morris. The IADAis a Federal Maritime Commission-approved agreement that provides four conferences and their memberlines an opportunity to discuss matters of commonin- iMIAMI Group to File Automatee terest. Parties to IADAare the conferences and lines that operate services between the United States and the East Coast of South America. AwesomeChallenge Converting members’ tariffs to the Maritime Commission’s automated tariff filing system (ATFI) presented an "awesome challenge" to the members of the discussion agreement, Morris says. "Taken as a whole, the conferences and memberlines of the IADAfile 18 separate tariffs, each with multiple sections, and since the conferences represent the lines ~ in both the northbound and southbound directions, the sheer volume of paper work was tremendous," says Morris. Vendor Selection A committee of representatives of IADAmember lines decided to contract, as a group, with one or two vendors to assist in the complex process. DXI Inc. of Pittsburgh was chosen to work with the Inter-American Freight, Brazil/Puerto Rico and River Plate/Puerto Rico conferences, whose data had already been converted to ATFI by Crowley American L!NE AS I~GROMAR Sailing Every 3 Weeks ¯ Houston & Miami ¯ Other U.S. Gulf Ports on Inducement Regional U.S.A. A second vendor, Lalandia Inc. of Fort Laudcrdale, Fla., worked with the Pacific Coast Conference, whose tariffs required a complete conversion into the ATFI format. Simplified Tariffs Memberlines were asked to radically simplify’ their tariffs by reducing their size, producing commonrules for each confcrcnce, and by modifying the rules, rate descriptions and regulations to meet ATFI requirements. On Aug. 16, the Inter-American Freight Conference Rules Tariff No. 1, FMCNo. 34, was filed; the tariff went into effect Nov. 1. Five other filings were expected to follow in quick succession for this conference. "Webelieve that this filing makes IADAthe first conferences to be filed and effective within the ATFI window for a trade lane," says Morris. "That places the IADAin a leadership position in the use of this new technology." The Certified Port Manager (CPM) Program was one of several items on the agenda of AAPA’s82nd annual convention held recently in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The purpose of the CPMprogram, AAPA officials say, is to foster professionalism and develop a standard that ports can use in hiring or promoting high-level port officials. The program is scheduled to go into effect Jan. 1. To receive certification, individuals must have completed the AAPAtraining program, have five years’ experience in port management, completed courses in AAPArecognized academic programs and must have written a paper on a topic related to port management. CPMs also must have served on an AAPA technical committee. New Chairman During tile convention, David Bellefontaine, president of the Halifax Port Corp., passed the chair- Program man’s gavel to Raul Urzua Marambio, director of the Empresa Portuaria de Chile. Urzua was elected AAPAchairman at the association’s spring conference in Arlington, Va. He is the first AAPAchairman from South America. Approximately 800 people attended the convention in Halifax. AAPArepresents port agencies throughout the United States, Canada, Latin America and the Caribbean. The association was founded in 1912 and is headquartered in Alexandria, Va. The order number is PB03193217, and the price is $27. The ability to locate and track commercial and government maritime vessels has always been limited by the requirement that those vessels manually communicatepositions over time. This became evident during Operations Desert Shield/Desert Storm. This prompted MarAdto investigate possible designs for an automated worldwide Vessel Locating and Tracking System (VESLOTS). At the request of MarAdand the Coast Guard, Synetics completed a three-part program which assessed the )ossible implementation of a system.
