Where did the summer go? Here at Alter we are getting ready for another school year. I have already scheduled Team Masses with football, soccer, girls’ volleyball, golf, the band, and the Lancerettes. There is the faculty in-service, freshmen orientation, and the board retreat. School opens on the Feast of the Assumption on August 15th with an All-School Mass. But this is no ordinary year for Alter. It is our Jubilee Year, our fiftieth anniversary. Our doors were opened in 1962 and here we are fifty years later. What a tradition that has been established here at Alter! There has been two years of planning for our fiftieth and I want to take this opportunity to thank the 100+ volunteers who have contributed to our year-long celebration. There was a birthday party for Archbishop Karl Alter and Elizabeth Ann Seton also on August 15th, the Gala on September 22, Mass at St. Charles on October 14, the cruise in June, an Alter History Book, and a memorial mural of significant events in our past. Check our website for the details. I want to also take this opportunity to thank those who have supported Alter this past year through various endeavors including the Annual Fund, “Answering the Call” capital campaign and through their time and talents. The fact of the matter is that Alter, as with all Catholic institutions, could not function effectively without the support of all of its constituents nor provide the quality of education that is expected for our students. I hope to see many of the alumni at Alterfest this 2 t h e R O U N D TA B L E year. Americans contributes to a myopic worldview that limits how well we relate to the rest of the world, and how well the world can relate to us.” While Turben has made climbs of Mount Whitney and Grand Teton, this was the first for Josh and one that he will remember forever. “My first sight of Mt. Everest through the clouds, after hiking for several days was just awesome. In our group of eleven was a man from England, four ladies from Canada and four from the U.S. In addition, there were six Sherpas (an ethnic group from eastern Nepal). We stayed in tea houses and tents that provided the opportunity each evening to learn more about our fellow trekkers and their reasons for making the trek.” Nepal, nestled in southern Asia between India and the People’s Republic of China, has some 27 million citizens, is a country of high poverty—many living on $600 per year—and with extremely low literacy rates. This was not lost on Josh. “Experiencing a Third World country makes you very thankful for the many blessings we have in this country. In Kathmandu we routinely saw young children and severally handicapped people begging for food and money. By contrast, the Sherpa People in the small villages high on the mountain have a similar level of income but seem very happy and also are very peaceful people.” The climb of Everest is extremely dangerous in many ways but a very popular challenge for experienced climbers throughout the world each year.
