Have you noticed an addition to the South Dock Café recently? Meet Malachi Garcia, he is 4 years old and is in Headstart at Region 16, here in Amarillo. He lives with his Mom, Amber and “Papo”, Freddie Garcia, a receiver in our Perishable Dept. Malachi is very close to his Papo. When his school held a “Transportation Parade” in February, Malachi wanted to be like his Papo because they are “Best Buddies” and be an Affiliated Foods Truck. He and his Mom constructed the miniature rig. As you can see they did a great job and with such details. AWESOME!!! When I met Malachi and his family for his photo shoot, I found him to be a very personable kiddo. He used my camera to take a picture of his Papo (bottom left), gave us an autograph and I got a big hug. He also donated his truck to Affiliated...WOW! What a remarkable young fellow! It was surely a pleasure meeting with Malachi and his family. Thanks to the Garcia Family for their generosity! You certainly made my day, and those memories will make me smile every time I go to the South Dock Café! The truck and the picture will stay in the South Dock Café to be viewed by all! When you get a chance, please stop by and visit the South Dock Café and see for yourself...you too will be amazed! The Affiliated Family News / Cathy Gallivan Special thanks to Dennis Toole / QC / HAACP / Perishable Dept.. for this contribution! 2 In the News AFI’s Warehouse Incentive Program At Affiliated Foods, when we hire a new order selector there is a working standard that must be met in the first 60 days of employment. The Warehouse Management System calculates time for each store order based on Engineered Labor Standard. This time / standard must be met at 100% by the first 60 days. Once the selector achieves 100% of standard and keeps that standard or above, they become qualified order selectors. This process helps orders to be pulled in a timely manner. Fact: Lightning often strikes the same place repeatedly, especially if it’s a tall, pointy, isolated object. The Empire State Building is hit nearly 100 times a year. Myth: If it’s not raining or there aren’t clouds overhead, you’re safe from lightning. Fact: Lightning often strikes more than three miles from the center of the thunderstorm, far outside the rain or thunderstorm cloud. “Bolts from the blue” can strike 10-15 miles from the thunderstorm. Myth: Rubber tires on a car protect you from lightning by insulating you from the ground. Fact: Most cars are safe from lightning, but it is the metal roof and metal sides that protect you, NOT the rubber tires. Remember, convertibles, motorcycles, bicycles, open-shelled outdoor recreational vehicles and cars with fiberglass shells offer no protection from lightning. When lightning strikes a vehicle, it goes through the metal frame into the ground. Don't lean on doors during a thunderstorm. Myth: A lightning victim is electrified. If you touch them, you’ll be electrocuted. Fact: The human body does not store electricity. It is perfectly safe to touch a lightning victim to give them first aid. This is the most chilling of lightning Myths. Imagine if someone died because people were afraid to give CPR! Myth: If outside in a thunderstorm, you should seek shelter under a tree to stay dry. Fact: Being underneath a tree is the second leading cause of lightning casualties. Better to get wet than fried!
