In School & On Track
Providing the right supports to the right students at the right time
2013-2014 School Year Impact Report
and 2014-2015 School Year Look Ahead
The Challenge
1
More than one million students give up on school every year. Half of the students who drop out
come from just 10% of schools. Here in Baton Rouge, even with promising recent annual gains,
the four-year graduation rate is 68%. The consequences are dire, both for the students who drop
out, and for our community. High school dropouts are eight times more likely to be incarcerated
and three times more likely to be unemployed.
In order for Baton Rouge to continue sustained economic growth, the next generation
of students must have access to excellent education and be engaged in our community.
Even though every child has the potential to succeed, many face challenges in the classroom and
at home that make it hard for them to stick with school.
The Solution
2
Educational researchers have found that struggling students can succeed with the right support at
the right time. However, teachers and schools do not always have the time and resources to meet
each student’s specific needs. City Year addresses these challenges through a unique, datadriven strategy, proven to keep more students in school and on track to succeed.
Wearing their signature red jackets, City Year AmeriCorps members are there for kids every day,
all day, year after year. When students are absent, corps members get them to come in. When
students fall behind in class, corps members tutor them before, during, and after school so they
can catch up.
With City Year’s help, under-resourced schools receive the additional people power necessary to
support the thousands of struggling students in Baton Rouge. Through addressing the needs of
the whole child, City Year helps transform the whole school.

City Year is there for us all: for students, ensuring they remain on track
and able to succeed in the 21st century; for teachers, helping to analyze
student data and create individualized plans to help students who are
struggling; for administrators, who have a lot going on and on any given
day just need someone to pull a student aside and talk to them.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT
Kendrell Tyler
Alumnus
Broadmoor Middle School
Kendrell Tyler was always asleep in
math class. Monday through Friday, Mr.
Noel, a City Year AmeriCorps member
who tutored him, made it part of his
daily routine to head towards the back
of the class and rouse Kendrell from
his slumber so he could pay attention
to Pythagorean Theorem or Isolating
Variables. He would usually wake up
for a few minutes, scribble a couple
of notes, and then put his head back
down. Even though Kendrell was a
natural at math and usually could
discover the right answers through
his own critical thinking skills, he was
turning in classwork that was only
30% complete.
The problem was that Kendrell had math
as his last class of the day. Kendrell
would invariably tell Mr. Noel, “I let you
down, but I’m gonna make it better
tomorrow.” But Mr. Noel realized they
needed to make it better together.
So Mr. Noel began one on one tutoring sessions with
Kendrell and each tutoring session ended with a one on
one basketball match. The tutoring helped boost Kendrell’s
mastery of math concepts, and the basketball gave him
some energy and encouragement to get through the day.
Mr. Noel’s interventions worked. In addition to
becoming more awake and alert during class,
Kendrell’s attendance improved dramatically. Over
the second semester, Kendrell missed 50% less
school than he did in the first semester. As a result,
he increased his score 42% on his math state
assessments- surpassing the progress of his peers.
Kendrell also increased his score 22% on his English state
assessments. At the end of the year, he was proficient in
both of these core subjects.
And Kendrell’s improvement extended outside of the
classroom. He became a leader in City Year’s Boys
II Men lunch group, a socio-emotional and leadership
development group for young men. At his 8th grade
graduation and awards ceremony, Kendrell also received
the team’s coveted City Year Starfish Award. Kendrell will
be moving on to Broadmoor High School as a freshman
this year, and his ultimate goal is to become a NASA
rocket scientist!
ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
Kim and
Dustin LaFont
City Year AmeriCorps Alumni
Front Yard Bikes, Founders
Kim and Dustin LaFont have a lot to be proud of—a
new marriage, meaningful careers as public school
teachers, and a unique afterschool initiative called
Front Yard Bikes which is a youth empowerment BuildA-Bike, Earn-A-Bike program. By participating in Front
Yard Bikes’ afterschool and summer programs, youth
learn life skills that expand far beyond bike maintenance
such as respect, teamwork and personal responsibility.
Participating children also expand their horizons and
explore the city with trips to the library, the State Capitol
and city parks.
How did they get to this point in their lives and in our Baton
Rouge community? That’s a
story that City Year is proud of.
Four years ago, Kim (then
sporting the surname Rick)
came to Baton Rouge from
West Palm Beach, Florida to join
City Year and volunteer in Baton
Rouge’s public schools.. At City
Year, she met Dustin LaFont, of
Houma, Louisiana, and for ten
months they served side by side
at Glen Oaks Park Elementary.
After their City Year, Kim joined
Teach Baton Rouge to earn her
certification in Early Childhood
Education, and taught
Kindergarten at University
Terrace Elementary, where she
still teaches today. Meanwhile
Dustin pursued a Master’s
in Education through LSU’s
Holmes program and began teaching History at Westdale
Middle School in 2012. They married in June 2013!
Both Kim and Dustin continue to serve with City Year as
well on our local Baton Rouge alumni board, with Kim
leading the charge as Alumni Board co-chair. “Our time
serving with City Year in local schools introduced us
to the social and economic divide in the city of Baton
Rouge, and after our service year, we are trying our
best to improve and bridge those divides. Through our
involvement with the alumni board, we can see that City
Year is doing the same,” reflects Kim.
