Large number (~3 millions) of enterprises
 95% of enterprises are SMEs
Nano at Workplace
ENM in Construction : cement,
concrete product, coating, roadpavement, flame retardant material
or textile … A fast increasing market
But >75% of Employees &
Employers are not aware of safety
at workplace involving MNs

Industry needs
Companies and workers are using and handling
MNMs and nano- enabled products in construction
Exposures are produced at different stages of the
construction industry life cycle
 “Legal uncertainty” (89/391/EEC, 98/24/EC)
 I have to protect workers but I don’t know how to do it …
 A Proactive approach is necessary, based on:
 Prevention of risks
 Assessment of risks
 Specific protection and prevention measures
 Arrangements to deal with accidents, incidents and emergencies
 Information and training for workers

1. Safer nano-enabled products for construction: dispersions; optimized formulations for
fire-retardant panels; concretes, bituminous pavements, coatings, insulations  minimize
MNs emissions, reduce the amount of MNs …

Assessment of 22 specific exposure scenarios at lab and pilot scales (Database),
involving on-line equipment (portable + advanced), personal samplers, chemical-SEMEDX .. analysis of samples, …(5 on-going industrial scale studies)

General quantitative (CB ISO 12901-2) and qualitative approaches for Risk
Assessment, including specific procedures, strategies and methods for measuring
exposures ( TiO2, SiO2, CNF, CeNF and nanoclays)


Manufactured nanomaterials (MNMs) in the
construction industry - Guidelines for
occupational risk management
(Technical Specification / CEN TC 352 WG3)
Adapt OHSAS 18001:2008 guidelines for MNMs
risks on construction sector activities, including
guidelines and best practices for risk management
from ISO 31000:2009 but applied to nano-risks.
Additionally this document will have Annexes with
several real case studies, illustrating the
implementation of each requirement.
