It has been an exciting year for the Adirondack Community Trust. As of June 30,
we closed with over $26 million in assets – an impressive growth this year of over
$10 million. We welcomed twenty-five new funds, including our first supporting
organization, and our grantmaking impact almost doubled from previous years with
$1.5 million distributed in the form of grants and scholarships.
Numbers alone do not tell the whole story. Thanks to the support and generosity of our
donors, local nonprofits are better able to provide services to residents in need, public
arts and education programs are available throughout the region, and our environment
is better protected. This year, the Bruce L. Crary Education Foundation became a
supporting organization of ACT and is no long a private foundation. This partnership
will lead to greater efficiencies of administration and investments helping more local
students have resources to attend college.
Although the challenges faced by our society grow more complex each year, ACT makes
it easier to help our neighbors throughout the Adirondack region. ACT connects donors'
interests, passions and memories with community needs and opportunities.
So what makes ACT a wise choice for charitable givers? We combine the management
skills of a national investment company with the understanding and knowledge of local
community needs. We offer a variety of products to meet the needs of donors who want
to have a long-term impact on the Adirondack region. We are mindful that our effectiveness as a community foundation is a direct reflection of the generosity and trust of our
donors. We thank them for allowing us to steward their charitable funds and for
choosing to partner with ACT to build stronger communities.
ACT is simply the best way to support all that is good about the Adirondack region.
We hope you will join us in building this community together, one investment at a time.
M I S S I O N
Encouraging Philanthropy to Serve the Adirondack Region
ACT was created to help philanthropically inclined individuals and families maximize the impact of their giving.
ACT is a collection of funds established through gifts that are pooled and invested. The income from these funds
are distributed as grants. ACT offers donors convenience and more: because we're local, we know the issues
facing our communities and the most effective nonprofits working on them. We vet each nonprofit organization
before we make a grant to make sure that it's financially and programmatically sound. And, by joining a
community of donors, a donor can have greater impact because his/her grants are combined with those
of other generous individuals.

Giving Options for Donors
In 2008 the Adirondack Community Trust…
Donors create funds for many reasons: to support a cause or organization, honor a loved one, start a family
tradition of giving, create a legacy in their community. These funds are pooled together for investment
management and the income is used to award grants to nonprofit organizations exactly as the donors intend.
Through donor funds, made college more affordable for 95 students and their families
by distributing over $200,000 in scholarships.
Trained 100 nonprofit organizations through our Nonprofit Board Leadership Seminar series.
Convened 25 local food pantries to help strengthen their ability to recruit volunteers,
work with local media, and meet the needs of their clients.
Continued to invest in our three Community Funds that are building new philanthropic
endowments in places that have never had them before – endowments that, over time,
promise to grow.
Acted as fiscal sponsor for three community-based projects: the Indian Lake Community
Theater, Art Devlin Statue Fund and Piano by Nature.
Organized a seminar for attorneys and accountants on real estate gift planning
in the Adirondacks: Charitable Remainder Trusts, Conservation Easements, and
Retained Life Estate.
Established a Special and Urgent Needs Fund to assist community institutions with
unexpected financial needs or opportunities.
Expanded our Adirondack Legacy Society to recognize individuals who are including ACT
in their wills or estate plans.
Worked with donors and organizations to establish 25 new funds to support causes
ranging from assistance for local veterans, a domestic violence shelter to a regional
writers organization.
Introduced Donor Central, a tool that allows all ACT donors confidential on-line access
to their fund.
Updated the ACT website making it more user-friendly and current. Please visit
www.GenerousACT.org.
. . . and distributed more than $1.5 million in grants and scholarships.

Donor Advised Funds are like having a
private foundation. You identify the charitable
organizations addressing issues of importance
to you. ACT ensures the charitable status of
beneficiaries and then grants are made in
your name from your fund.
S U P P O RT A N N UA L G I V I N G
Non-Endowed Donor Advised Funds are like
having a "charitable" checkbook. Consider
donating appreciated stock to ACT and then
recommend grants of $250 or more to
organizations that are important to you.
A minimum balance of $10,000 must be
maintained.
ADDRESS ISSUES
Field-of-Interest Funds allow you to decide the
general purpose of the fund, such as education,
arts, health, or the environment, and ACT
works with you to identify projects effectively
accomplishing those goals.
PROVIDE ONGOING SUPPORT
Designated Funds allow you to specify particular
charitable organizations to receive the income
from your endowed fund in perpetuity.
STRENGTHENING NONPROFIT
O R G A N I Z AT I O N S
Organization Funds are established when a
nonprofit transfers all or part of its endowment
to a fund at ACT. An annual distribution creates
a stream of income to the organization for its use.
The goal is to create a partnership that provides
investment economy and management expertise,
saving time for staff and board to focus on the
mission of the organization.
T H I N K B R OA D LY
Unrestricted Funds allow ACT to identify needs
and opportunities in the community and, through
competitive grants, target your dollars where they
are most effective.
P R I VAT E F O U N DAT I O N T R A N S F E R
If you are a trustee of a private foundation,
you are aware that the government requires
detailed reports and taxes part of the foundation's
income. There can be savings in time and
expenses as well as benefits of pooling assets
for investment purposes by transferring private
foundations to ACT. Family members or other
designees continue in grant decision-making;
there will be no taxes to pay; and ACT will
take care of all the paperwork.
P R OV I D E E D U C AT I O N A L S U P P O RT
Scholarship Funds allow you to work with ACT
to create the guidelines for students eligible to
receive assistance from your fund based on high
school or college attended, merit, need, or field
of study.

Grantmaking
ACT is a family of 180 different funds that are either designated for specific purposes or interest areas, scholarship,
or nonprofit endowment. The majority of grant awards come from donor advised and geographic-field-of-interest
funds, which are a vital part of ACT because of their contributions of knowledge, expertise, connections and
financial resources. In 2008 ACT distributed more than $1.5 million in grants and scholarships.

Strengthening
Nonprofit Organizations
In 2008, the Adirondack Community
Trust deepened its commitment to
nonprofit organizations, providing
seminars, training, fiscal sponsorship
and other resources to help community
organizations pursue their missions more
effectively. We strengthened regional
nonprofits by offering high-quality
investment management to build their
endowments and by connecting them
with donors who share their vision.
This year, Adirondack Nonprofit
Leadership Seminars included:
Ready, Set, Ask! Donor Cultivation and
Solicitation; Merging, Shared Services
or Developing Alternative Legal
Arrangements with another Nonprofit;
Real Estate and Planned Giving;
and Board Transformation:
Recruit-Restructure-Reenergize.

Effective stewardship of philanthropic assets is key to the Adirondack Community Trust's ability to fulfill its
mission of building charitable funds to strengthen Adirondack communities. ACT's investment objectives are to
earn reasonable current income and provide long-term growth of capital value to support inflation-adjusted
grantmaking into the future.
Currently ACT manages $26.6 million in assets made up of more than 180 separate funds established by donors
and nonprofits. Through our endowment portfolio, ACT offers donors and nonprofit organizations access to
institutional strategies and management normally available only to large investors. Donors and nonprofits can
capitalize on the benefits of a diversified investment approach by working with ACT.
ACT's portfolio is managed by US Trust (www.USTrust.com) which is responsible for investment and manager
selection, best strategies and appropriate benchmarks. The ACT Finance Committee, composed of business
leaders, meets regularly to monitor investment performance, review asset allocation and ensure that the
investment objectives are achieved.
