By Becca Pizmoht Correspondent S mall Business Saturday is a term dreamed up as part of a campaign to encourage people to shop locally. The idea, conceived by American Express, came about in 2010 and has gained momentum since. Millions of Americans have made a ritual of patronizing the shops, restaurants, and boutiques that make up their communities on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. The idea of connecting local customers to local business has really taken hold in communities like Orange. One business that truly embodies the spirit of community and local networking is Orange County Coffee Roasters. Founders Deb and Al Welker started the business in 2000 as a way to bring quality, ecologically friendly and affordable coffee to the area. The company has moved twice before moving to its current location at the corner of Berry Hill and Monrovia Roads in Orange. Orange County Coffee Roasters has a roasting plant and roasts onsite where coffee is packaged. All production is done in small batches in-house. Beans come from more than 13 different countries around the world, and the majority are organically produced. Orange County Coffee Roasters has always made an effort to buy beans that are "responsibly grown" (no pesticides, herbicides, or chemicals, and friendly to the environment) and "fairly traded" (growers and harvesters doing the work are paid a fair wage). Whenever possible, the business buys directly from plantation owners or co-ops, helping the growers and their local communities. Orange County Coffee Roasters is a local business in most every way. Current owners, John and Rhonda Jenkins have had the business for the past seven months. They bought the thirteen year old See Coffee Page 6 The Disclaimer: All real estate advertised in this publication is subject to the Federal Fair Housing Act, which makes it illegal to advertise “any preference, limitation, or discrimination because of race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status or national origin…” The Virginia Fair Housing Law also makes it illegal to discriminate because of elderliness (age 55 and over). Photo by Strader courtesy of The Montpelier Foundation. “I think at this time of the year reflections are bound to occur, in one’s family life, religious life for some, or the reflections on the past year and the coming year. One of the reflections the candlelight tour offers us is the oppornit to reflect on our own American histor. It is a good way to put our own life and own sitation into a different, much broader perspective.” John Douglas Hall 4 • OC MAGAZINE • December 12, 2014–January 15, 2015 “T By Meghann McKnight Correspondent his Christmas season, James Madison’s Montpelier will be filled with all the grace, charm, and hospitality that Dolley Madison herself would have shown. Visitors to the estate will be taken back in time and the mansion will be filled with 19th centurystyle decorations and lit by only candlelight. Guests can enjoy guided tours of the candlelit mansion, which will be filled with Madison-era decorations. Various performers will help visitors go back in time for a few hours each evening. “The mansion is a very different perspective in candlelight and it is a really special occasion. This is a good way to learn about the 19th-century Christmas traditions. The focus wasn’t on gifts or decorating, but more on being with family and visiting. It was much simpler. Friends and family would come and stay for weeks at a time,” shares Christy Moriarty, Tourism Coordinator for James Madison’s Montpelier. “We have colonial dancers, we have an acapella group singing. We will have music in the mansion: harp music one weekend and classical guitar one weekend,” continues Moriarty. “The mansion will be decorated in a way that is accurate for the 19th century. The candles make it very authentic, very warm,” says Caroline Godfrey, Communications Associate for James Madison’s Montpelier. “You can really get a sense of the mansion being a really busy home in their retirement years. Their home was always open to guests.” First Lady Dolley Madison, portrayed by Lynn Uzzel, will be there to greet guests each evening. President James Madison, portrayed by John Douglas Hall, will join her on the second weekend. Caroline Godfrey, speaking of Uzzel and Hall, says, “Both James Madison and Dolley are very knowledgeable about the political accomplishments and influence that each had on American culture and politics, but also on the style and sense of humor and personal stories. They really research these characters so they are very fun to talk to and quite funny. They are not always at Montpelier so this is a special opportunity to talk with them.” “Dolley was the most charming lady of her day. Her purpose was to make everyone feel better after they left her. That has become my raison d’etre [reason for existence],” explains Dr. Uzzel. “Everyone who comes to the Candlelight Christmas is looking to enjoy themselves, so all they need is just a little encouragement. They go away having a great time.” Dr. Lynn Uzzel is James Madison’s Montpelier’s Scholar in Residence. During Christmas and other events, Dr. Uzzel brings history to life through her portrayal of America’s first First Lady, Dolley Madison. “My own specialty is the debates of the Constitution. The reason I thought about playing Dolley Madison is that we have the same expertise,” shares Dr. Uzzel. The BBQ Exchange in Gordonsville will be serving light refreshments that are included in the ticket price. There will also be wine and beer available for guests, at an additional cost. Ambition Ale, by Devil’s Backbone Brewery, will be presented at the Candlelight Christmas. “The ale is part of series that Devil’s Backbone and Montpelier collaborated on called Montpelier’s Best. This is the inaugural beer,” explains Godfrey. The Candlelight Christmas event will also have new activities this year that are specifically geared toward children. Kathy Del Rosso, Director of Events and Hospitality for the estate, shares some of the new features at this year’s event. “We have added more kid-friendly activities like the kids’ craft table where children can frost Christmas cookies and decorate pinecones” There will also be a visit from Santa Claus this year, tying modern Christmas traditions with the historical ones. “The children are delightful. They know that this is a special occasion and therefore they just respond to the whole event with enthusiasm,” says Dr. Uzzel. Experiencing the rich history of the Montpelier Estate with the magical effects of candlelight and period decorations, music, and even President and First Lady Madison is a unique and beautiful opportunity for local residents and their guests this Christmas. “We really think that with the holidays and visiting families and visiting relatives, this is really an opportunity for residents of Orange and nearby counties to share the See Tours page 7 ★ ★ Holiday Gift ★ ★ Certificates Special ★★ Purchase $100 in gift certificates and receive an extra $25! ★ Logans ★ Salon and Spa ★ is now open ★ ★ 132 E. Rhonda Jenkins says that she and John had often talked about having a small business. “We found out from a mutual friend that the business might be for sale. It seemed to be the perfect fit for us. It was a small company, locally owned with established customers.” “Besides that, fifty two percent of the population drinks coffee!” chuckles Jenkins. It truly is a “mom and pop” business. Husband John does most of the roasting while Rhonda manages customer relations, office work and all of the purchasing. Rhonda’s mother comes in to help with answering the phone and walk in customers two days a week. The Jenkins roast on demand each week. Most of their product is distributed through other local retailers. Rhonda says that they do have some retail customers but she “doesn’t really want to compete with the other local business that sell their coffee. Marshall Farms Corner, Liberty Mills Farm and Croftburn Farms all offer Orange County Coffee Roasters coffee as do two Orange restaurants, Elmwood at Sparks and The Lightwell. Bag of Blue Ridge Community groups sell Orange Mountain blend County Coffee Roasters coffee as a fundraiser. “It gives (groups) an opportunity to sell something different than popcorn or candles. Most people even if they don’t drink coffee know someone that does. Orange County Coffee Roasters motto is “Changing the world one cup at a time”. All photos by Becca Pizmoht. The Christmas Elf is back B ruce Wayne turns into Batman and Clark Kent’s alter ego is Superman. Every year about this time, Orange County has its own holiday superhero. Rhodesville’s Wallace Goodman becomes the Christmas Elf spreading joy and smiles to all that drive by his residence. Most Orange County residents know Wallace Goodman as the outgoing and affable octogenarian that works at the Porter Road trash collection center. Always joking and smiling, Goodman is comfortable chatting about anything from the weather to politics to his family and his 19 year old Tennessee Walking Horse. Most Thursdays and Fridays, the retired carpenter can often be found sweeping up around the dumpsters, helping sort recyclables or protecting the feral cats that live at the landfill. This time of year, Goodman’s alter ego “Christmas Elf” comes out of hiding. For the past ten years, Goodman has made it a personal mission to set up an extravagant light and inflatable display in his yard. Wallace says “The decorations make me smile because they make others happy. Every 12 • OC MAGAZINE • December 12, 2014–January 15, 2015 By Becca Pizmoht Correspondent Wallace Goodman is the Christmas elf of Rhodesville. year people pull over and ask if they can take pictures (of the display) with their kids. They ask how much does it cost? I tell them it’s free …just don’t drive on the grass. It’s great to see people smile and be happy.” Goodman says that he has to be careful when he puts the display up and warn the local school bus driver. “The driver wasn’t too happy a couple years ago when I put it up on a school day. The little kids got so excited they were jumping out of their seats causing chaos. Now I warn them when it will be up so the driver can tell the kids to stay seated. I wouldn’t want anyone to get hurt.” Goodman says that he inherited his cheerful disposition from his mother. “Mama managed a dress shop in Fredericksburg. People would come from all around just to visit with her. I guess that I’m a lot like her. She liked people, liked to see them smile.” Goodman plans to keep doing this for as long as he is able. He says that the display “only costs about $30 or so per month “for the electricity and that as long as he is physically able to set it up he will continue to do so. For the next few weeks, Rhodesville might just be the most festive place in Orange County. ••• To Advertise call: 434-207-0223 • Email: [email protected] Opie Notes Merry Christmas!
