Monday through Friday:
8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The Transition to the New
Senior Center ~ A Look Ahead
Change is in the air as we begin the process of
transitioning from the current Senior Center at 40
Main Street to our lovely new ‘Westfield Senior
Center at the Mary Noble Estate’ located at 45
Noble Street. The Council On Aging staff has started
purging old files, taking inventory of our supplies,
and packing those items that will be moved to the
new Center. In order to streamline the process and
orchestrate the actual relocation, it will be necessary
to close the Council On Aging/Senior Center during the week of October 19. The final day of programs and activities at the current Senior Center will
be Friday, October 16. All Council On Aging programs and activities will be suspended from
Monday, October 19 through Friday, October 23.
There will be no telephone or computer access at
the beginning of that week as the technology shifts from the old Senior Center to the new one. We hope to
resume telephone access by mid-week. The new Senior Center will open ‘softly’ on Monday, October 26.
There will be no ribbon cutting ceremony or special party for a few months as staff, volunteers, and older adults
acclimate to the new Center. Although we are excited about the prospect of finally moving into our new ‘home,’
there will be an initial adjustment period for all involved. Please be patient with the COA staff as we navigate a
new building, additional staff members, state-of-the-art technology, and more offices and rooms than we’ve ever
had before!
Wacky Tacky, Clearance Special, Last Hurrah Luncheon!
413-562-7049
As we clean out closets, sort items, pack boxes, and begin the process of saying good-by to our 40 Main Street
address, we’re going to make the ordeal less tedious and lots more fun by holding a ‘Wacky Tacky, Clearance
Special, Last Hurrah Luncheon’ on Thursday, September 24. We’ll set the tables with leftover napkins, tablecloths, and plastic utensils and dishes from assorted holidays and special events. Participants will feast on our
famous meatloaf, garlic mashed potatoes, and glazed baby carrots dinner, made for the last time in our teeny-tiny
kitchen. COA Principal Clerk and baker extraordinaire, Carol Shannon, will make her delicious homemade apple
pie for dessert. Sandy promises some ice cream to make it an ‘a la’ mode’ treat. Not to be outdone by her staff,
Tina has asked an old high school friend to venture up to New England from the Outer Banks to perform for your
listening pleasure. Kim Kalman will bring her trusty guitar and begin her performance at 11 a.m. Kim’s
Anne Murray style is sure to delight her listeners. We’ll have lots of door prizes that we’ve squirreled away from
past parties and a 50/50 drawing. Tickets are $5 and must be purchased in advance. Seating is limited.

of the month at 9:30 a.m. Specific deposit amounts for

offered. Deposit information is available either on the
trip flyer or by contacting the Whip City Travelers.
Single day trips must be paid in full at the time of sign-up.

Participants must park in the spaces farthest away from
the church building. Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods monthly
day trips depart from St. John’s at 8 a.m. and return to St.
John’s at approximately 5:45 p.m. It should be noted that
overnight trips will not reopen for late sign-ups once the
ticket sales are closed. Participants are asked to have the correct change when paying for a trip. Cash or checks, posted
on the date of sign-up, are accepted. Checks should be made
payable to “Whip City Travelers.” Credit cards and postdated checks are not accepted. In addition, seats for the
casino day trips will be assigned beginning on the posted
sign-up day and only when payment is received. Those
who call for tickets will be put on a waiting list.

S.H.I.N.E. News and Notes
The Annual Open Enrollment for all Medicare plans
begins October 15. Be on the lookout for your Annual
Notice Of Change (ANOC) to arrive sometime this month.
The ANOC is sent from your Medicare plan and will have
all the upcoming changes to your current coverage for 2016.
*Please read it carefully as this will be your only notice
of changes to your plan for next year. The Medicare plans
have until September 30 to mail these ANOCs out to their
members.
If you have questions, please contact Karen Noblit, SHINE
Counselor, at the Westfield Council on Aging, 562-6435.
Things To Consider When You Compare
Medicare Plans and Coverage
The Annual Open Enrollment is right around the corner
and one must consider several factors when comparing
health and/or drug plans. Each year at this time, you should
review your current health and prescription plan and compare it with other Medicare plans.
Things to consider when comparing Medicare plans are:
• Cost and Coverage: Costs can include premiums,
deductibles, and co-payments/coinsurance. Coverage is
based on a ‘formulary’ or list of drugs that the plan covers.
• Prior Authorization: Your doctor must first contact a
representative from the plan and show that it is medically
necessary for you to be on a particular drug.
• Coverage Gap (Also known as the ‘Donut Hole’): Are
you going to fall into this gap in coverage and what will your
costs will be?
• Health Needs and Concerns: Your current medical
needs and possible future needs may require additional coverage.
If you decide to make a change, sign up as soon as possible. It will help to avoid any inconvenience at the pharmacy
in January. If you want to keep your current plan, you don’t
need to do anything. Your plan will renew itself for January
1.
For help comparing plans or enrolling in a Medicare
Prescription Drug Plan, please contact Karen Noblit,
SHINE Counselor, at the Westfield Council on Aging,
562-6435.
** Remember that there will be no telephone service
at the Council On Aging at the beginning of the week of
October 19 because of the relocation of all technology to
the new Senior Center. Please plan accordingly.
Since 1986.
