Hooper Bridge over Amite Planned
Last week officials from the DOTD came to Central to unveil plans for the
Hooper Road Extension to connect Central and Watson via a bridge over the
Amite River. Several plans were displayed, including the roundabout shown
here, as well as alternatives for an overpass or a signal light. This process
will likely take a number of years and the actual construction is not yet
funded. However, most officials recognize that this is a necessary addition to
the roadway infrastructure of the Central area. Detail plans and presentations
can be seen at www.dotd.la.gov under the "On the Move" section.
According to the LADOTD: The Hooper Road Extension project is
currently under study by the Louisiana Department of Transportation
and Development (LADOTD) in conjunction with the Federal Highway
Administration (FHWA). The proposed extension of the widening of
Hooper Road begins in East Baton Rouge Parish in the City of Central at
Sullivan Road (LA 3034) on the west and continues to Greenwell Springs
Road (LA 37/64) on the east. The proposed extension of Hooper Road
starts at Greenwell Springs Road on the west, crosses the Amite River into
Livingston Parish would end either at LA 16 or LA 1019 on the east. The
total length of the project is approximately 5.5 miles.

on January 18, 2013. Brittany has been a member of the varsity softball team at Central High for four years, and
is currently on the LA Lady Katz Tournament team. She received Second Team All District for the last two years
playing Center field and second base. Brittany has Maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout her high school career.
Outside of softball, she has won a state championship in Power Lifting and has been a member of the Track and
Athletic training team. Brittany has Plans to study Radiology at LSU-E and then further her Education at a four
year university.
Katie Flowers, daughter of Billy and Shari Flowers of Central, signed with LSU- Eunice January 18, 2013. Her
primary position for the CHS softball team is Catcher. Her freshman year she was awarded First Team All District
as an outfielder along with the All-Metro Team. Her sophomore year she was awarded Second Team All District
along with the "Big Stick" award. Her junior year Katie was awarded First Team All District as a catcher and
Second Team All Metro. She was also a two year member of the volleyball team. She currently holds a 3.3 G.P.A.
She plans to attend LSU-E to get a degree in the study of Elementary Education.

I Love It When a Plan Comes Together Thank You to Seale

George Peppard played team leader Hannibal
Smith in the 80’s TV action show “The A-Team”.
The 60 minute show was always filled with
unexpected twists and potential failures, but
the members of the A-Team would always find
a way to work together, overcome the pitfalls,
and get the job done. Then, with the mission
accomplished, Hannibal would smile and say
“I love it when a plan comes together.”
Since November Central citizens and
representatives of Central’s charitable and
service organizations have worked together to
honor two special men. Tuesday night School
Board Member Will Easley was honored as
Central’s 2012 Citizen of the Year and Fire
Chief Bill Porche was given the Lifetime
Citizenship Award. A hundred friends, family,
co-workers and community members came out
to express their appreciation. I love it when a
plan comes together.
Cooking in Central has a new home at
“Amazing Place” on Blackwater Road. The
Cooking in Central pavilion has been built. The
volunteers have begun meeting and planning
for this year’s event. Despite weather delays
and the tremendous amount of work required
to pull off Central’s annual festival, Cooking In
Central will take place May 10th & 11th. I love
it when a plan comes together.
The Central Men’s Club has been working
with Guaranty Broadcasting to take CHS
Football broadcasting to the next level. This fall
fans can tune in to Country Legends 104.9 FM
every game night to hear the Wildcat football
experience on this premier FM station. Thanks
go out to the Central Men’s Club and Central’s
own Gordy Rush of Guaranty Broadcasting for
helping to make this happen. I love it when a
plan comes together.
This community overcame tremendous
odds to create a city and form a school system.
Legal challenges, legislative battles, petitions,
and an election were hurdles that our team has
already overcome. Now, even as the next set
of challenges of infrastructure, growth and
economic development are worked through,
look around you. Some of the best schools in
the state…the 12th largest city in Louisiana, yet
miles and miles of rural living…new business
opportunities and beautiful neighborhoods.
Thank you to all 27,000 of you who have,
each in your own way, created what is now the
City of Central. I love it when a plan comes
together.

Having to make funeral arrangements are hard
enough but on December 10, 2012 we lost our
son, Jonathan, in a motor vehicle accident and we
decided to use Seale Funeral in Central for the
services. Bobby Suchman and John Minton who are
the Funeral Directors along with John’s wife Belinda
and Jill Seale, are truly some of the most caring and
compassionate individuals that we have ever met.
They went above and beyond anything that we could
have imagined for Jonathan’s service. John knew that
Jonathan designed and built custom trucks and cars
so when we walked into the funeral home John had
a picture of Jonathan on one of the flat screens and a
picture of a custom red truck on the other screen. We
could not have been more touched to see that. Bobby,
John, Belinda and Jill were so accommodating to
our family and guest and went above and beyond
to make everyone as comfortable as possible. We
had an idea that a lot of people would attend but we
would have never guessed that the number was at
least 600. It is our belief that one reason for the large
turnout was because we chose to have the services in
our Community. The staff of Seale worked tirelessly
to move the guest into the Funeral Home and tried to
assist with the traffic jam that was caused on Hooper
Road. Our family will be forever indebted to our new
friends at Seale. Residents of Central have longed
to have a Funeral Home and we could not be more
blessed to have Seale Funeral Home and the caring
staff be a part of our Community.

RWC Install New Officers
At their first monthly meeting of 2013, the
Republican Women of Central installed new officers. The 2013 officers
are President Debbie Dougherty, 1st Vice President June Dupuy, 2nd
Vice President Betsy Barnes, Recording Secretary Tommie Morden,
Corresponding Secretary Lauren Ventrella (not pictured), Treasurer Louise
Rauls, Past President Joan Lansing, and Members at Large (not pictured)
Judy Clay and Claudette Whisnatt. Also at the meeting, RWC members
heard from the following guest speakers: Louisiana Supreme Court Judge
Elect Jeff Hughes, 1st Circuit Court of Appeal Judge Mike McDonald,

Two Arrested in Burglary Man Arrested for String of
Local Vehicle Burglaries
of Local Home

East Baton Rouge Sheriffs Deputies
were dispatched to a residence located
at 11979 Gurney Rd.on a burglary in
progress.
The victim arrived home and
noticed a strange vehicle (white Dodge
Durango) under his carport and the
rear door to his residence open.
The victim heard noises in the residence
and observed the accused and his
accomplice fleeing out the front door
of his residence as he entered through
the back door. The victim fled out the
back door and went to his vehicle and
retrieved his hand gun. The victim was
between the suspects and their vehicle
. The suspects came around the house
with their hands up. The victims father
arrived and they had both suspects at
gun point on the ground until EBRSO
Lt Jared Ruiz ,DyThomas Weimer and
Lt.Darryl Michelli arrived moments
later. The homeowner dosent know
either suspect . Detective Michelli read
both suspects their rights per miranda
warnings at which time they stated
they understood. Suspect Dionseus
Wilkens admitted that he and Brandon
Wright went into the residence but he
just followed Wright into the residence
and that nobody was home. Wilkens
stated that the homeowner came in on
them and held them at gunpoint until
Deputies arrived.
Wilkens stated that Brandon Wright
was going to burglarize the house but he
was just with him in the house.Wilkens
further stated that they burglarized
residences on Jacocks Rd about two
months ago in Zachary where they stole
electronics from several residences.
A witness observed their white in
color utility vehicle in the area at the
time of the burglaries. Wilkens stated
that the vehicle they were caught in
today, a white Dodge Durango, is the
vehicle they were using at the Jacock
Rd. burglaries. This interview was
recorded. Brandon Wright did not
wish to make a statement.

Baton Rouge Parish Prison for three
counts of Simple Burglary of an
Inhabited Dwelling and one count
of Attempted Simple Burglary of an
Inhabited Dwelling.
All Pro Dads Simulcast This Saturday Fun for 3-5th Graders and Parents
This Saturday, January 26th, there will be an All Pro Dad Simulcast
with Tony Dungy, Tommy Bowden, Lorenzo Neal, Hunter Smith,
and Clark Kellogg. All are ex-professional athletes or coaches. This
is a unique event designed with fathers, mothers, and guardians of
elementary aged children (3rd -5th grade) in mind. They, along with
their children, will be guided through age-appropriate drills designed
to encourage and challenge their children.
The event will be held at Central Church, 11681 Greenwell Spring/
Port Hudson Rd. Go north on Joor until it ends, turn left and the
church is 1/2 mile on right. Free registration begins at 12:00 noon and
the event will be from 12:30 - 2:30. This is open to the community,
so please feel free to join in.
C4 Report: Tribute to a Star
Last week we talked about the
Awards & Installations Banquet,
“Members – The Stars of the
Chamber”. My goal over the next
few weeks was to highlight the
various winners in each category.
However, those articles will have
to go on hold for one more week.
This week I want to give tribute
to a long standing business owner
in our community that truly was a
“Star of the Chamber”!
On Wednesday, January
14, 2013, Dennis Lewis, long
time business owner of Lewis’
Wrecker Services, passed away
after his battle with cancer. For
over 30 years Dennis operated a
successful business in the Central
Area. In 1980 Dennis assumed
ownership of Lewis’ Wrecker
Service, which was started by his
parents Finnon and Ruth Lewis in
1956. Dennis was a long-standing
member of CABA, The Central
Area
Business Association,
which later became The City of
Central Chamber of Commerce
in 2005.
Besides being an
active business owner in our
community, Dennis served on the
Board of Directors for the Central
Volunteer Fire Department and
for many years was an active
participant in coordinating the
Central Christmas Parade. Over
the last several years, Dennis
was known as the one “towing”
Santa’s sleigh.
To operate a business for over
30 years shows persistence,
consistent work ethic, and
ingenuity! We appreciate all the
years of hard work, dedication,
and
service
that
Dennis
provided to our community. Last
Wednesday, Dennis Lewis took
his “final ride” and on Tuesday of
this week he was laid to rest. Our
thoughts and prayers are with the
family and all those associated
with Lewis’ Wrecker Services.

East Baton Rouge Sheriffs Office
Armed Robbery and Burglary
Detectives began an investigation
on 12/27/2012 in reference to a rash
of vehicle burglaries concentrated
around the Hooper Rd, Devall Rd,
and Cimmaron Dr area. Detectives
conducted surveillance and observed
a white male identified as Cliffton
Smith who was frequenting these
areas late at night on foot.
On 1/5/2013 Detectives observed
Johnny Kemp and Smith in Kemp’s
Ford truck riding in Cimmaron
Subdivision at approximately 0345
hours. Detectives observed that Smith
would take a path behind his trailer,
on foot and came out on Devall Rd.
and then enter into the Jackson Park
Subdivision from between the houses
early in the morning (pre-dawn). On
1/9/2013, at approximately 0300hrs,
Detectives observed Smith in the
area of Devall Lane crossing into the
Jackson Place Subdivision. Burglaries
of vehicles were reported in these
areas on 1/5/2013,12/26/2012,1/9
/2013,12/30/2012 Detectives later
conducted a pawn shop inquiry on
Clifton Smith and located numerous
pawns in the last several months.
On 12/25/2012 a burglary of a
vehicle was reported directly across
the street from the defendants address
14314 Hooper Rd. The following
items were stolen from the vehicle:
a Taurus Judge .45 caliber handgun
and a Benchmade pocket knife .The
Complainant stated the Benchmade
pocket knife is a $400.00 knife.
The pawn inquiry shows that Smith
pawned a Benchmade pocket knife
on 12/26/2013. Detectives seized
the knife and the victim positively
identified the knife as his knife.
On 1/15/2013 at approximately
0845 hours Detectives contacted
the accused at his residence and
placed him into custody. Detectives
transported the accused to Central
Substation. Detective Michelli read
the accused his rights per Miranda
Warnings at which time he stated he
understood. Clifford Smith agreed to
answer questions. Smith stated that
he has a Crystal Meth and an opiate
addiction which costs him about $150
a day. He commits burglaries to buy
drugs. Smith states that he is usually
on meth late at night and he can’t
always remember the exact locations
of the vehicles he burglarized.
Smith stated that he is friends with
Johnny Kemp and that the night that
detectives had surveillance on them
they had Crystal Meth and were
using methamphetamine. Detective
Michelli asked Smith why the
burglaries have slowed down as of
the last week. Smith stated that he
spotted the surveillance units and that
made him extremely paranoid from
the presence of what he suspected
was undercover cops and the fact that
he uses Crystal Meth. Smith stated
most of the pawned items under his
name are stolen. Lt Michelli observed
that Smith was pawning new items
also. Smith stated that he stole all of
the most recently pawned items from
local stores being Pat’s Lumber at
13533 Hooper Rd., Radio Shack at
10218 Sullivan Rd., and Wal-Mart at
10200 Sullivan Rd.
The items stolen from Pat’s lumber
included a drill and grinder totaling
approximately $200.00, reported
under file number 13-3269. Radio
Shack’s theft was a scanner and the
value was approximately $150.00,
reported under file number 13-3270.
Wal-Mart’s theft was of numerous
hard drives and GPS’s totaling
approximately $800.00 and reported
under file #13-3272. All of these
pawned items were placed on hold
and detectives are in the process of
trying to locate the victim for the
items that are in pawn that, according
to Cliffton Smith, are stolen.
Cliffton Smith was booked into the
East Baton Rouge Parish Prison for
the above listed charges.
CAPA Corner: Narrow is
the Road
Matthew 7:13, “You can enter
God’s Kingdom only through the
narrow gate. The highway to hell
is broad, and its gate is wide for
the many who choose that way."

Following God means walking
the 'narrow road.' Here are several
things that can help to keep us on
the "straight and narrow."
1. Make God's Word a border
for your life. As long as You stay
within the guidelines laid out in
Scripture, you will have all you
need to do what you should do.
God is faithful and true to His
Word.
2. Finish what you start. God
uses committed people who aren't
led by just emotion. It's easy to be
excited when something is new,
but the ones who cross the finish
line are the ones who hang in there
when no one is applauding.
3.
Understand that when no
one is there to help you, you get
to know Jesus really well. The
narrow road of living for God and
not conforming to the ways of
the world is often lonely. But the
trade-off of gaining real intimacy
with Christ is worth it.

CHS Girls’ Soccer Wraps Up Home Season with Senior Game

Life Academy. The game ended with a 2-2 tie.
During the game, the Lady Wildcat seniors were
recognized with their parents. The Lady Wildcats
have a season record of 10-6-5.

this award! Morgan has a 4 year
cumulative GPA of 4.0.

Central High finished their
preseason with a convincing victory,
a 4-Team Jamboree consisting of
Central, Holden, Tara and Denham
Springs this past Wednesday (116-13). In the opening matches
(2 games), Central cruised easily
by defeating Holden 16-0, while
Denham defeated Tara.
Against Holden, Central was led
by Jacob Garretson (Sophomore)
with games of 235 & 224 for an
outstanding 2-game series of 459.
Garretson was followed by Sean
Murphy (Junior) with a 216 & 210
for a 426 series and Bryan Waits
(Senior) with a 180 & 236 for a 416
series. Central also crushed Holden
in Total Pins by nearly doubling
Holden’s total, 2191-1129. In fact if
Wednesday was the regular season,
Central’s second game would have
set a school record with an 1155
team game.
In the Jamboree Finals, Central
cruised to victory by defeating
Denham Springs 7-1. Central was
once again lead by Garretson with
a 211, followed by Murphy with a
203 and Waites with a 188. As a
team, Central would defeat Denham
Springs in Total Pins 1061 to 978.
Central’s three game total of 3252
would have been another school
record by over 100 pins for team
series.
Last year Central relied heavily
on their 1-2 Punch of Garretson and
Waites, but this year they welcome a
much improved bowler in Murphy.
The trio of Garretson, Waites and
Murphy are arguably the best trio in
this year’s District-5A and without
a doubt could be the most talented
team Central has ever fielded.
Central’s quest for a first ever district
title starts on January 28th (Monday)
against Woodlawn and then against
Baton Rouge High on January 30th
(Wednesday). Both matches will be
held at All Star Lanes at 3:15PM.

Healthy Recipe:
Breakfast Cookie Cake

In case you all haven’t figured it out, I have a MAJOR sweet
tooth. I would choose something sweet over something salty
any time of day/week/year/whatever it may be, but I especially
crave sweet things in the morning as soon as I wake up or as a
night-time snack right before I go to bed. I adapted my Quick
Brownie recipe (if you missed that article, you can find the recipe
on my food blog www.racheleatsalot.wordpress.com) to make
this healthy Chocolate Chip Oat Cake. It is made of wholesome
ingredients and great for Breakfast along with a few pieces of
fruit, but it is also light enough to easily be a dessert with a scoop
of banana soft serve! Also, since it only takes 5 minutes to make,
you can whip it up at any time day or night!
Makes 1 Chocolate Chip Oat Cake
1/2 small (6 inch) banana
2 Tbsp. Nonfat Plain Greek Yogurt
1/2 tsp. Vanilla Extract
1/3 cup Oats, Regular or Old Fashioned
1/2 Tbsp. Mini Dark Chocolate Chips
In a small, microwavable safe bowl,
mash banana and Greek yogurt together. Add in Vanilla Extract
and stir. Grind Oats in a small food processor or blender. Pour into
bowl and mix until combined. Stir in dark chocolate chips. Flatten
on bottom of the bowl and microwave 2 1/2 – 3 minutes. Remove
from microwave and enjoy a cookie cake for Breakfast!
If you avoid dairy for any reason, you could sub Coconut Yogurt
or Unsweetened Applesauce for the Greek Yogurt; however, I
would recommend trying the Coconut Yogurt first because the
yogurt will keep the consistency of the cake moist even though it
is “cooked” in the microwave! Enjoy!

New You contestants began
their weight loss journey with

continue to update you on Taya,
Lorie, and Beth's progress. Today
we will highlight Taya Hanley
and her success!
At one point in Taya's life,
she was an aerobics instructor
and knew what it was like to
be healthy and fit. After having
her son and shifting priorities,
Taya found herself getting out
of shape. She is now determined
to get back to living a healthy
lifestyle, and I am honored to
be the one to help her reach that
goal! Taya comes to each session
with 100% determination. When
it burns, she keeps going. Even
when sweat is dripping off her face, she gathers her energy to
finish strong! I enjoy pushing Taya during every single workout
because I know how badly she wants this! She is also making the
right choices after our personal training sessions by coming to
Snap Fitness on Magnolia Bridge Road three days a week to do an
hour of cardio and by eating healthier. With her shift in priorities
back to living a long and healthy life, Taya started her weight loss
journey by losing an astounding 3.6 pounds in week one, which

Working with CAAWS

Several ladies from the Central
Senior Center took on a project
for Capital Area Animal Welfare
Society (CAAWS) to promote
dog and cat adoptions. A contact
was made with CAAWS to see if
they needed "Adopt Me" vests for
the animals, and they definitely
needed some in XS, S, & M sizes.
We hope to make cat toys with the
scraps at a later date.
Materials were donated for the
vests; some volunteers cut, some
embroidered "ADOPT ME" on
each side, and some are sewing
on the linings. Now we need your
help. Donations are needed to
purchase webbing and buckles in
the various sizes. The cost will be
approximately $80.

appreciated by us, CAAWS, and
the animals.
We hope these projects will aid in
finding homes for these homeless
animals.

Samantha is a graduate of Central High School and
Southeastern Louisiana University. She is employed as a Junior
Loan Processor at Essential Mortgage Company in Baton
Rouge.
Her fiancé is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Jarreau of
Denham Springs. He is the grandson of the late Janis W. and
Willie J. Kent of Baton Rouge and the late Mr. and Mrs. Tony
Jarreau of Torbert, LA.
Chase is a graduate of Denham Springs High School and the
owner of Electricare, LLC in Baton Rouge.
After a honeymoon to Jamaica, the couple will reside in
Denham Springs.
Nolan and Vicki Savoy of Greenwell Springs, LA celebrated
their 50th wedding anniversary on December 31, 2012.
They were honored at a party on December 30, 2012 that
was hosted by their children and their spouses, Waldon and
Dawn Robert of Gonzales LA, Dewitt and Belinda Croswell
of Greenwell Springs, LA and Aaron Savoy of Baton Rouge,
LA. The Savoy’s grandchildren are Taylor Robert, Jordan
Robert, Maddie Robert, Danielle Croswell and Brad Croswell.
Familymembers also in attendance were Vicki’s aunt and
cousin, Helen Jolly and Julee Pearce of New Orleans, LA. The
day was especially meaningful thanks to the many close friends
that attended.
Nolan and Vicki are originally from Biloxi, MS. They eloped
to Gulfport, MS on December 31, 1962 then moved to Baton
Rouge in 1966.

Thomas “Tommy” J. Olsen, Jr., 66, of Central, died December 18th at
Food Pantry in New Building Baton

He is survived by his wife Debbie Aaron Olsen, daughter Theresa Odom
and husband Cody of Zachary, son Tiger Thomas Olsen and wife Brandy,

He is preceded in death by first wife Elizabeth Olsen, parents Thomas

As a result of new construction being done at St.
Alphonsus, the St Alphonsus St. Vincent DePaul Food Pantry has moved
across Frenchtown Road to a new building. A blessing was held at the
new site on Wednesday, January 23. Father Mike Moroney and other
parishioners were in attendance for the blessing.

On January 19, 2013 Beverly Ann
Harrington, 76, passed away at her
home surrounded by her family.
Although she was affectionately
known as “Mrs. Bev” “Aunt Bev”
or simply “Mom” or “Maw Maw”
to all who had the great fortune to
know her, she was born Beverly
Ann Williams to Pearl and Reggie
Williams on September 3, 1936. One
of eight children, she would come to
be the matriarch of her own large and
extended family.
At fifteen she met the love of her life,
Bobby Gene Harrington, they married
in 1953 and she was soon whisked off
to California and then to the island of
Guam. Though she only gave birth
to four daughters, she became mother
to many more children, raising nieces
and nephews and later, stepping in
to help with grandchildren and great
grandchildren. If you needed her, she
was always there.
An excellent cook, her near perfect
seafood gumbo and heavenly fried
okra will be greatly missed, as well as
her gift for knowing the perfect ratio of
sugar, water and tea, and her uncanny
ability to always burn the bread. And
who could forget her famous muscadine
jelly, always passing out jars to anyone
who stopped by and wanted some.
A woman of deep love and many
talents, sewing, painting, making
dolls, she always had her hands
working on a craft. Beverly was also
an avid gardener and a gifted artist, her
hibiscus plants, both real and painted,
could take your breath away. Her
friends and loved ones will cherish
the magnolia flowers that decorate the
walls of so many of their homes. You
knew you were special if she painted
one for you. It is a great comfort to
know that she is now a shining angel,
painting on God’s canvas.
Beverly is survived by two sisters,
Joyce and Glenda, her beloved husband,
Bobby, her four daughters, Vickie
Smith, Elizabeth Robertson, Renee
Harrington and Shannon Kennedy, as
well as her nephew who was more like
her son, Mike Crouch. No words can
express their depth of loss, or that of
the nine grandchildren and eight greatgrandchildren she leaves behind.
Visitation will be held at Seale
Funeral Home 9995 Hooper Rd.
Central, Louisiana on Thursday
January 24th from 5 to 7 pm with a
memorial service at 7 pm. Because
of her great love of children and her
caring spirit, the family requests that
any donations be made to the St. Jude
Children's Hospital or another worthy
charity.

PTO hosted Breakfast with
Santa as a PTO fundraiser for
the school. Participants got to
have breakfast, take pictures
with Santa and Mrs. Claus,
and take part in fun crafts and
activities. Door prizes were also
given out at the event, supplied

Federal and
state lawmakers are proposing offering
incentives to school districts that hire
more resource officers.

The Central Community School
System is taking measures to beef up
security efforts at each of its five schools
to enhance the safety and well-being of
its students and faculty, according to
Superintendent Michael Faulk.
Faulk noted that investments in
technology and resources to make schools
more secure have been incorporated
into the district’s construction and
maintenance efforts for the past several
years. In fact, taxes approved in 2009
to support the district included monies
to address life and safety code issues at
each campus. Still, with heightened
concerns for school safety following the
massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary in
Newtown, Connecticut, where 26 people
were killed, the Central Community
School Board is revisiting the district’s
crisis action plans and safety policies to
seek ways to further strengthen campus
safety.
“While our district is clearly about the
job of teaching and instilling learning
for each student, we know that teaching
and learning in a safe environment
is the ultimate priority,” Faulk said.
“Creating safe learning environments
at our schools requires a continuous
investment of resources and an everpresent attitude of awareness.”
Faulk said the district’s new schools
include restricted access features,
giving school administrators more
controlled access to those campuses.
The district also partners with local
law enforcement officials to provide
security background checks on district
employees and campus visitors. He said
the district recently invested in having
two full-time resource officers service
the majority of the district’s schools and
students.
At the same time, each school is
required to maintain crisis plans and
conduct frequent emergency drills for
the threat of fire, storm and dangerous
intruders. He said those plans are
currently under review by officials who
are seeking ways to improve them in
light of the tragedy in Connecticut.
School Board President James
Gardner said board members recently
held a strategic planning session to
review the district’s security measures
and to ask Faulk for recommendations
for improvements. The discussions
were conducted in executive session to
protect important security information
from being released.
Faulk said he expects to present the
board with his recommendations prior
to the Jan. 28 meeting.
He has consulted with security
experts and conducted several campus
walkthroughs with them. Although he
said there are many aspects of campus
security that he will not publicly discuss,
he did say access points at each school
are being closely examined. He also
noted that the school board has allotted
monies to improve access controls in the
district’s older buildings, and procedures
regarding campus visitors are also being
examined and reinforced with parents
and employees.
“A crisis plan is a living, breathing
plan of action that incorporates the latest
information and available resources,”
Faulk said. “Our school administrators
and faculty understand the gravity of
these plans and the need for these drills,
and they are very vigilant about being
prepared.”
Faulk said federal and state lawmakers
have also become more active in
seeking ways to make schools safer,
like proposing incentives for greater
investments in resource officers or
security technology.
“This latest tragedy has caused
school officials and leaders throughout
the country to reexamine what schools
are currently doing and what can be
done to make them safer,” he said.
“I know not all tragedies can be
prevented, but our local leadership is
making every effort possible to keep
Central Community Schools a safe
and productive place to be.”
