Dear Parents
An exciting term has come to an end. Most staff and students are looking forward to a well-deserved rest.
There are those, however, who are preparing for inter-provincial tournaments and we wish the 30 hockey
players and the squash player representing Boland, all the best for their various tournaments. A number
of our staff are accompanying the teams as coaches and we wish them well.

Jacques Grobler – Boland under 16A Boys
Mark Pickering – Boland under 18A Girls
Four of our boys are on a private under 18 and under 15 cricket tour with the Leopards tour to England.
Mr Hilton Toro is accompanying them as the under 15 coach. We wish them a wonderful tour.
Holidays are a fantastic time to work on some fitness and to enjoy some cross-training. Have fun doing
some running, surfing, swimming, paddling, canoeing, skiing or whatever else takes your fancy. It is a
great opportunity to do things with your family and friends.
From the Sport Department, we wish everyone a wonderful time and safe traveling.

PREP NETBALL
U13 Netball Tour to Knysna
It was time for tour and everyone was so excited! We got on the bus, ready for a five and a half hour trip
to Knysna. On the bus we all sang songs and chatted, it was loads of fun.
When we arrived at our accommodation, Lagoona Inn, Mrs de Kock and Mrs Evans gave us our room
keys and told us who we were staying with. We settled in and went to the Waterfront Spur for dinner.
We walked around and found a shop, which soon became a favourite during our stay in Knysna.
On Saturday we woke up to a lovely sunny day and our first round of matches. The A and B team both
played four matches each. The B team improved as the morning progressed and the A team won three of
their four matches, which was a fantastic start. Spur burgers for lunch and then off to the Elephant Park
where we got to touch and feed the elephants.
We had supper at the Ocean Basket and had some more time to walk around. We got to go to bed a little
later as we only had to be at the venue for our matches at 10:00 the next day. Breakfast was also
planned for a little later.
It wasn’t raining, but we headed out to the courts a little earlier to see if we could play before the rain
started. Unfortunately, as the A team went on for their first match it started to drizzle and then it
poured. We finished the game and everyone huddled in the club house. The rain did not stop and a decision was made to stop play and re-organise the programme on the Monday to fit in more matches.
We went to the Mall for lunch and a bit of shopping. We then went tenpin bowling and had a lot of fun.
When we drove back into Knysna the roads were flooded and we had to re-route to get to the Waterfront. We had dinner at the Dry Dock and went back to our B&B for “fines night”. As always, what happens on tour stays on tour, but we had some good laughs.
On Monday, the last day of tour, the sun was out and we managed to catch-up on some of the matches
we had missed the day before. The A team did very well again and the B team managed to win their first
match. They had a very tough pool, having to play mostly A teams from other schools.
After the matches we all got into our onesies and onto the bus, ready to head home. We all sang our
tour song as we got off the bus at College for our parents. Tour was an amazing experience!

PREP HOCKEY
PREPARATORY INTER-HOUSE HOCKEY
After three weeks, following a spell of bad weather, we have completed the fiercely contested Interhouse hockey programme. The students played two rounds allowing all players to be part of the action
and compete against their peers. It was good to see how sometimes results changed from one round to
the next, and how the evenly matched teams scrapped for their results. When the students wear their
green, blue and red there is a festive and fun vibe on the fields, underpinned by healthy competition.
Vredelus (red) remained the hockey power-house and won the event, with Cloetenberg (blue) as runners
-up followed by Avontuur (green).
RHENISH MINI-HOCKEY FESTIVAL
Our U7A, 8A and 9A boys and girls hockey teams were excited about the festival at Rhenish this past Saturday and tackled the day with great enthusiasm. Excellent weather set the scene for good hockey,
despite the wet fields, with our teams displaying their competitiveness and producing great results overall. With plenty of cheering from the side lines, thanks to the parents and families who came out in their
numbers, our teams responded by racking up the goals. We won 19 of our 24 matches played! The other
teams at the festival were Somerset House, Curro Langebaan, Hermanus Primary and hosts Rhenish
Primary. Well done to both our U8A boys and girls teams on winning all their games!

RUGBY
Rugby versus Rhenish
Having missed some matches due to exams and bad weather, we travelled to Rhenish to play in an extra
fixture organised by both schools. Rain was predicted for the afternoon but we decided to continue as in
the past we had cancelled and then the weather ends up clearing . All junior teams played well and enjoyed playing in the rain managing to win four out of six matches, losing one and drawing the other. Most
players came out saying this was the best game they had ever played. All senior teams played in a heavy
down pour with the U11As continuing their good run of form by defeating Rhenish for the first time in
the history of the two schools playing each other. The U13As played very well and won their match which
was good preparation for the upcoming tour to George.
Good luck to all the U13 boys who are
going on tour this weekend.
BOLAND SQUASH
Our Squash has had an outstanding season. Timothy Offer, who plays in the Somerset
College 1st boys Squash side has recently made the Boland U19B Squash team, and
their tournament will be taking place in the June/July holidays. We wish Timothy the
best of luck for this tournament.

INTER-HOUSE SOCCER
Somerset College had their first ever Inter-house outdoor soccer event this week, and it was well attended by all. The Young Bafana’s, a Youth Academy, also took part and their skills were admired by all
involved. The level of soccer was outstanding, as many games were closely contested. We would like to
thank all involved in the organising of this event, as well as the players involved, for their commitment,
support of one another and their sportsmanship.
The winner of the junior girls was Helderberg; winners of the senior girls was a draw between Vredelus
and Cloetenberg; Mixed boys was a draw between Cloetenberg and Avontuur; the junior boys teams
were closely contested, but Eikenrust were the end winners; the winner of the senior boys teams was
Cloetenberg. The overall winner for the day was Cloetenberg. We would like to applaud everyone on
the spirit in which the day was approached.
