The Lake County Chamber of Commerce celebrated 90 years of service in 2005. Established in 1915, the
Chamber currently represents businesses from throughout Lake County and represents a growing Hispanic
business community, a prosperous retail shopping and entertainment mecca in Gurnee, Illinois, the county seat in
Waukegan, Illinois, and Lake County in general.
The two main goals of the Lake County Chamber are to provide member businesses with opportunities and value
for their membership. Monthly networking opportunities at the Chamber include the twice-monthly Breakfast
Networkers Group, Women’s Networkers, Business After Hours hosted by a member business, Hispanic
Networking, and the Business Luncheon series. These networking opportunities are supplemented by educational
programs and seminars, community events, an annual business showcase and the Chamber’s annual events,
which include the golf outing and the annual dinner.
Additionally, Chamber members have the opportunity to promote their business through a variety of member
benefits that include free and discounted advertising, sponsorships, the member-to-member discount program,
newsletter and Web site advertising, and referrals from the Chamber and other members. Advertising through the
relocation and tourism packets is available as well.
Throughout the year, the Chamber provides member companies with a variety of other opportunities to promote
their business and make the social and business contacts necessary to succeed in business today. These projects
include county maps and membership directories, community guides, Chamber events and fundraisers, and
volunteer boards and committees.
A strategic location in northeastern Illinois, set along Lake Michigan to the east, the Wisconsin border to the
north and the bustling city of Chicago to the south, has established Lake County as an active transportation hub.
An extensive network of major routes quickly connects the county to a wealth of cities and towns in every
direction. Interstate 294 travels north through the area, serving as a convenient means of travel for traffic from
Chicago to Milwaukee and beyond. Routes 12, 14, 41, 45, 59 and 83 also assist in the north-south flow of traffic,
while Routes 176, 173, 137, 132, 120, 60 and 22 maintain east-west travel.
Just a short distance from the Lake County communities is the vast O’Hare International Airport. Located on
Chicago’s northwest corridor, O’Hare is noted as one of the world’s busiest air terminals. Milwaukee’s General
Mitchell International Airport is also convenient for Lake County residents and businesses. Situated on the south
side of Milwaukee, the airport can be reached in less than one hour’s drive from the county. Waukegan Regional
Airport, a designated “reliever airport” for O’Hare, offers plenty of advantages for private, corporate, business,
executive and governmental flying. Shipping ports and major rail links are also readily accessible in Lake County.
Commuters throughout the entire county can take advantage of the affordable means of public transit via the
extensive Metra passenger rail service. Through numerous stations located around Lake County, riders are
afforded convenient transport to destinations in Chicago and its suburbs, including O’Hare International Airport
and links with nationwide Amtrak train services.
With a steadily increasing population of more than 713,000 residents, Lake County stands as one of the fastest
growing and most productive counties in the country. Residents reflect a diverse blend of family, blue collar and
executive lifestyles—all of which delight in the natural beauty and ample opportunities in this northeastern
Illinois county.
Lake County is composed of 52 municipalities and 18 townships, each offering its own distinct characteristics. A
medley of urban, suburban and rural centers runs between the communities of Waukegan, Lake Forest and
Highland Park on the east to Barrington and Volo on the west. While some of these communities have developed
flourishing commercial and industrial bases, others have remained mostly residential in nature.
A number of Lake County communities offer upscale living, featuring opulent homes in the $500,000 to $1
million-plus price range. However, there are certainly housing options for every budget and lifestyle. Modest
homes offer an affordable alternative, as do the establishment of quality townhomes, condominium complexes
and rental units for those not in the market to purchase. In addition to these real estate choices, are a host of
senior retirement, assisted living and nursing facilities.
Home to nearly 90,000 residents, Waukegan, the county seat, stands as the most diverse city in the area. Some of
the county’s most valuable assets are found within this community, including stunning lakefront views and a
world-class harbor. Waukegan is also the site of the beautifully restored Genesee Theatre and the modern Harbor
Boardwalk—both evidence of Waukegan’s ongoing rejuvenation efforts.
Neighboring Waukegan is the growing village of Gurnee, a dominant retail and tourist destination in Lake
County. The presence of the Six Flags Great America and KeyLime Cove indoor water park and the expansive
retail centers at Gurnee Mills have established Gurnee’s tourism-based economy as one of the strongest in the
region.
Long Grove, also a popular tourist spot, is widely celebrated for its mix of unique historical charms and oldworld retailers with contemporary sites for shopping, dining and entertainment. Vernon Hills, Mundelein, Lake
Zurich and Libertyville offer a wealth of outstanding opportunities for shopping, dining and family-oriented
activities as well.
Great Lakes Naval Base, centered along Lake Michigan’s coastline near North Chicago, has been a part of the
area for nearly 100 years. The dynamic naval base stands as the U.S. Navy’s largest training facility and is host to
the Navy’s sole Recruit Training Command. Approximately 37,000 men and women graduate to become Navy
Sailors at Great Lakes every year.
Have fun discovering the rich history of this area at the renowned Lake County Discovery Museum, which
features an array of hands-on interactive exhibits including the nation’s largest permanent collection of postcards.
Accompanying the changing and permanent displays at the museum are a variety of public programs, notably
summer day camps, July’s Civil War Days—showcasing the largest Civil War reenactment in the state—and the
Farm Heritage Fall Festival in September.
Further museums to visit include the Great Lakes Naval Museum and the Volo Auto Museum, which displays a
multimillion dollar automobile collection complete with displays designed for children and the new military
history adventure exhibition.
Those looking for a thrill will revel in the amusements of Six Flags Great America in Gurnee. The
300-plus-acre theme park draws in millions of visitors each year who enjoy rides for all ages. KeyLime Cove is a
giant indoor water park. Just three miles down the street from Six Flags is the modern Rink Side Family
Entertainment Center, which houses an ice rink, 180 games, glow in the dark miniature golf and a laser tag arena.
Visitors spending more than a day in Lake County have a choice of more than 50 lodging sites, ranging from
economical hotels and motels to luxurious resorts and charming bed and breakfasts. Adding to the offerings are
many fantastic venues suitable for events of all kinds. Conferences, corporate meetings, wedding receptions,
reunions and more are just some of the notable events these facilities cater to.

While Lake County has experienced much in the way of development over the years, it has still worked to
preserve its abounding natural beauty. In this area alone are 75 inland lakes, thousands of acres of forest
preserves and 37 public golf courses—not to mention the presence of the popular Chain O’Lakes State Park,
which stretches over 6,000 acres of outdoor diversions.
Outdoor enthusiasts will also relish in the beauty, education and recreation of the more than 26,800 acres
composing the Lake County Forest Preserves system. Award-winning facilities and preserves dot the landscape
of the county, offering unlimited opportunities for year-round outdoor recreation. Miles of trails, golfing, fishing,
snowmobiling, horseback riding, boating, cross-country skiing and educational classes are just some of the many
activities found within the preserves.
The Lake County Forest Preserves system manages the great Des Plaines River Trail and Greenway as well. This
area covers more than 3,000 acres of land, featuring an extensive trail system (currently, 31 miles of the trail is
open). Spanning virtually the entire length of Lake County, the Des Plaines River Trail links the forest preserves
with area parks and the county’s communities.
Winthrop Harbor is home to the largest contained marina in the inland U.S., accommodating vessels up to 120
feet in length. North Point Marina is complete with 1,500 slips along Lake Michigan, along with a restaurant,
nature preserves, charter fishing, a boardwalk, beaches and trails for hiking and biking.
In addition to these wonderful outdoor spaces is the establishment of many area park districts, the Northern Lake
YMCA and YWCA Lake County, as well as recreational programming offered through local governments.

World-class arts and entertainment is discovered in all corners of Lake County, from fantastic galleries and fine
theatrical productions to musical entertainment and cultural centers. Live theatre is enjoyed at Lincolnshire’s
Marriott Theatre, an intimate venue offering five wonderful musicals each season. The P.M.&L. Theatre in
Antioch, the Kirk Players in Libertyville and the Gurnee Theatre Company are also talented troupes not to be
missed.
After an extensive $23 million renovation project in July 2001, the Genesee Theatre has become a modern,
115,000-square-foot entertainment venue capable of accommodating 2,400 guests—establishing it as one of the
largest facilities of its kind in this region. The Genesee Theatre welcomes the finest in performances, which
includes well-known comedians, national and regional musical acts and fantastic Broadway productions.
Ravinia Festival is another entertainment venue showcasing the best in musical performances. Located in
Highland Park, Ravinia Festival is equipped with the 3,200-seat open-air Pavilion, the summer home of the
Chicago Symphony Orchestra and an eclectic array of musicians; the 850-seat Martin Theatre, which welcomes a
range of musical events throughout the year; and the 450-seat Bennett-Gordon Hall, home to the Steans Institute
for Young Artists.
Further venues to check out include the Jack Benny Center for the Arts, which is home to the Bowen Park
Theatre & Opera Companies and the Waukegan Symphony Orchestra & Concert Chorus, the James Lumber
Center for the Performing Arts at the College of Lake County and the Round Lake Beach Cultural & Civic

Lake County's assortment of retail venues and dining establishments is impressive. Large retail centers, charming
shopping districts and neighborhood plazas are intermixed with a wide variety of restaurants sure to please even
the pickiest eater. Diners can choose from casual eateries and fast-food places, family-style restaurants or fine
dining establishments, all of which offer a distinct menu ranging from American classics to ethnic infused dishes.
No shopping experience in Lake County is complete without a visit to Gurnee Mills, the second largest tourist
attraction in Illinois. Located at the intersection of I-94 and Grand Avenue (IL 132), Gurnee Mills attracts
approximately 23 million shoppers each year to browse through the more than 200 various retailers that line its
walls.
Take a trip to Long Grove where shoppers will find an open-air shopping district that showcases more than 80
specialty shops, galleries and restaurants—all set within historic structures and along cobblestone sidewalks.
Antiquers take pleasure in the bountiful offerings at the 24,000- square-foot Gurnee Antique Center, which
houses around 200 unique dealers, and the great Historic Volo Country Village. This 30-acre antique theme site,
anchored by the Volo Auto Museum, is comprised of five separate malls featuring antiques, gift items and one-ofa-kind collectibles.
Also be sure to check out CityPark in Lincolnshire and the downtown Main Streets in Libertyville, Mundelein
and Waukegan. These areas are lined with quaint boutiques, professional services and delicious restaurants, while
also offering plenty of options for entertainment in the way of cinemas and annual events.

The business environment in Lake County, fueled by the presence of approximately 28,000 diverse businesses,
remains strong and highly active. A number of major U.S. corporations have made a home in Lake County,
notably Abbott Laboratories, Baxter Healthcare Corporation, Takeda Pharmaceuticals North America, WMS
Gaming, Yaskawa Electric America and the Vista Health System. Supplementing these large-scale corporations
are thousands of smaller manufacturing, distribution, service and professional firms, along with a multitude of
home-based operations.
Companies of all sizes and types are continually looking to the benefits of doing business in Lake County. More
than 50 business and industrial parks, plus a commercial slip and two recreational marinas, are readily available
to
accommodate new and expanding businesses. Lake County’s location affords it unsurpassed transportation
options with the availability of a number of major highways and both regional and international airports.
Industrial and commercial real estate taxes have remained low, and excellent incentives for relocation and
expansion are made available to qualified manufacturers and other business operations.
Lake County is well-supplied with a variety of organizations dedicated to ensuring the success of local businesses
and the communities served. In addition to the Lake County Chamber of Commerce and numerous training and

Vista Health System operates a number of high-quality medical facilities within the Lake County communities of
Waukegan, Gurnee and Lindenhurst. The system is composed of two hospital campuses that have been serving
the county for nearly a century, along with a freestanding same-day surgery and treatment center and several sites
for imaging and patient therapy.
NorthShore University HealthSystem (formerly Evanston Northwestern Healthcare) manages a network of four
hospitals, including Highland Park Hospital. The 239-bed facility—the site of the first open heart surgery in the
county—boasts a renovated emergency room and a modern Ambulatory Care Center.
Since its beginnings more than 100 years ago, Lake Forest Hospital has grown into a 215-bed community
hospital, equipped with its main campus in Lake Forest, the Grayslake Outpatient & Acute Care Center and
several further facilities in Lindenhurst, Gurnee, Libertyville and Vernon Hills.
Advocate Health Care has been recognized as one of the top 10 systems in the U.S. The extensive system
operates the Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington. The hospital’s Level II Trauma Center and a state-of-the-art
Birth Center are complemented by a nationally recognized cancer program, a modern health and fitness center,
adult and adolescent behavioral health programs and a long list of outpatient services.
Advocate Condell Medical Center, located in Libertyville, also serves the Lake County population. The hospital
houses an ultra-modern Level II Trauma Center and one of the busiest Emergency Departments in the county.
The Emergency Department recently underwent an expansion, which incorporated the first and only Pediatric
Emergency Department in the county. Condell also houses the Howard H. Green, Jr. ICU (opened in January
2003), an excellent Women’s Center and first-rate neurosurgery and cardiovascular services. In addition to the
main hospital campus, the network operates four convenient immediate care facilities throughout Lake County,
all of which offer walk-in medical care, along with lab, X-ray, occupational health services and on-site physician
offices.
Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) has an established facility in Zion. The Midwestern Regional
Medical Center houses an outstanding integrated cancer care program featuring a variety of world-class cancer
treatment services, including chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgery, along with a number of
complementary and alternative treatment options.
Supplementing these exceptional hospitals is a large number of physician offices, clinics and specialists.
Strategically located throughout the county to better serve the area’s patient base, many of these resources are
affiliated with some of Chicago’s leading healthcare systems and teaching universities.
